The Lodge cast iron sportsman's grill is a hibachi style grill with a removable grill grate. One of the neatest features is the dual air vents. They replaced the bail type handle with a steel hook type for portability. This Lodge cast iron sportsman's grill is perfect for tailgating or backyard bbq.

How the heck are you in Arkansas wearing a Cabela's hat? Don't you know Bass Pro is what's good for ya? (Especially since Bass Pro now owns Cabela's) :D
Lol!! I know right!!?? 😂😂
I still love my old one. The open door makes it like a mini fireplace. I can stuff pecan and apple wood directly inside.
Yes, that is one cool feature that the new one doesn’t have anymore! We still have our older model, too, and I plan to keep cooking on it! Thanks for stopping by and checking it out, my friend, and especially for sharing your thoughts with us!
I have tons of cast iron products, mostly vintage, love it all. I always light my chimney in my grill. Don't let the negative comments get to u. Some people do everything perfect, so they think, they don't have anything better to do.
Mine is going on 25 years old and is still in regular use. I like the ease of assembly and definitely like the ashtray.
thank you mr and mrs cast iron. I appreciate this video. chimney paper is not something i had considered before. i appreciate the way you show the capacity of the grill and how functional it is..i am glad i watched your video. thank you
My hibachi came with me from Japan. I use twigs and larger for fire. When the meat is done, and the fire's burned out, I simply remove the wooden handled grills and dump the ashes. The grill base also has wooden handles. SO! 1grill base and 2 adjustable height racks. Used this hibachi since 1964. A lot! If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
BTW..hibachi is what it IS. 😊 The description became the brand name.
Sounds great! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences with us my friend!
Thank you; I am learning from your videos. I just ordered a very similar one to this and I wonder how you care for the cast iron body. Do you need to clean and season the entire thing after use?
Great video.
Why did Lodge change the design. The realistic answer is because they made it cheaper to manufacture. There are only 3 pieces to be make, instead of 7 pieces with the old one (including the bail handle)
I have this model but always use my lodge sportsman grill. Hopefully they bring back the LSG
Thank you! I’m gonna say you are right because it just makes financial sense to reduce the number of castings from 7 to 3. I wish they would have kept the bail handle, but the hooks work too! Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts with us, my friend!!
I watch this and was impressed so I ordered one. When I received it was in perfect condition. I found lowest cost and free shipping at Home Depot.
I was so impressed with it..very well built! Looks nice and maybe something to brag about a little. : ) I love it . Haven't used it yet but will soon.
how do you know you love it you havent used it yet- love these useless reviews
@@canoestripper502 How do I know? I am 74 years old now and I have bought Lodge cast iron items since I was in my 20's. My mother-in-law gave me my piece..an Lodge 8" skillet. I still have it. This brand has stood the test of time of wear and how it cooks food. I also have my favorite brand of stainless steel cookware. I also have used it for 50 years and it still looks new. I have a large family so my cookware was used a lot.
How items are built can determine if it looks beautiful or ugly.
Hopefully you won't find this reply 'useless'.
Have a Merry Christmas.
Great work Mr Cast Iron! I just watched 17mins of video about a grill I don’t need just because you seem like a nice bloke 😂 Sending love from Australia 👍
Just bought one and glad I watched this. If you put the washer thingies outside the grill box like I did at first (I'm no mechanical wizard, LOL) the slide doesn't work. They have to go inside, under the nuts.
Yeah, there’s not much room there. I appreciate you sharing this with us, my friend!
Mr. Cast Iron, I like the way you used blocks and that expanded metal grate for a table. That's a good idea.
Thank you! It’s kind of a crude setup but it works perfectly for what we use it for!
Nice video! I just got the Pro Grill too. I've enjoyed the old style but these are some nice upgrades to the design. Easier to empty and the venting is better. Great point on watching how much charcoal you use; I've seen videos where people use too much and complain about how close the charcoal is to the cooking surface. It does save on the amount of charcaol you need to use. You got me to subscribe!
Thank you Vince!! I agree some things were needing a change but some things didn’t. I would like to see a better way to carry or move it around. The old style with a bail handle was cool but it wasn’t balanced. Other than that I’m happy with mine.
I have my original of this, but I'm liking the looks of this one "more gooder". Thanks.
Fantastic video, very informative. Well done.
Thank you, Sandy!
Love it, love the iron grill but how you take care of it. Tks
Very nice video! Great job! Very informative! Thank you! 😊
You’re welcome, Al, and thank you too, my friend!
You did a good job on this video- thanks
Thank you, Tim! I’m glad you found it helpful and informative!
After watching this I decided to order one. It will be delivered in a few days. Can hardly wait to try it.
That's cool! Let us know how it goes, ok!?
Great review. I would like for them to make a cover for it like they had for the older sportsman.
Thank you, sir! Actually, the older cover will fit these too!
Awesome video I just ordered the pro can’t wait to get it on the 12th which is my birthday. So happy they made the pull out drawer to empty the charcoal
It's so great to see both of you! You look happy!
I was concerned you weren't going to like the new grill, Mike. I'm happy you appreciate the improvements they made. That's a fine-looking meal. Thanks for sharing your review!
Yes! We had a good time making this one! I really like some of the changes they’ve made to the new grill. And the food wasn’t too bad either, lol! Thanks for stopping by and checking it out, my friend!
Looks like a great little grill. Nice demonstration.
TYFS Mike
You bet! Thanks for stopping by and checking it out, Mark!
Great video! I love radishes but have never had them fried or cooked. Would love to try that! Thanks!
Hey Mike ......you and Mrs. CI are THE BIG TIME now as Lodge has finally hooked you up with a great product! What a great demonstration video y'all. Lunch sure looked delicious too! Have a great week and enjoy that beautiful weather!!
Lol! Thanks, Big Rob! I don’t know about being big time yet, but I was shocked when the friendly folks at Lodge offered it to us to review!
I love that you can flip it upside down legs up & a lodge flat griddle fits on it like a glove for bacon eggs pancakes etc…
I picked up a sportsman grill this morning for $8.00 bail handle with ridges it was orange. Cleaned the grill top and used it. Tomorrow I'm doing the electrolysis on it. love it already.
Wow! Now that was a bargain, Michael! I’m sure once you get it stripped down and cleaned up that it will be a great little grill for many years to come! We sure love ours too! Thanks again for sharing this with us, my friend!
you would have been better off drop bolt down from above, nut and washer underneath. while unpridictble, you might one day want to disassemble. bolting the way you did, heat and grime from use will make it impossible short of braking the bolt.
Looks like the screws go the way he put them in... the top side has hex in the casting for the nuts and the bottom has countersinks for the flathead screws.
He put the bolts thru the EXACT way the assembly section of the book that comes with it says to
You mean the “ screw“ 🤣
Thank y’all for the comments and feedback! We sure appreciate it!!
I like what Lodge did with the New Sportsman Grill . All the upgrades seem to make it easier to use. Kinda surprised that it took them so long to figure out The problems. I love radishes, these looked good. NicelY Done. Thanks for sharing. 😎🇺🇸.
Yes, me too, GOG! I like everything, except they didn’t keep the bail handle. It seems to make it easier to move around to me. Those radishes were delicious, and it’s something we are cooking more and more!
Hey thanks for the video im thinking about picking up one of these. Is there anyway you can do an update video on this ? Also when I season it do you have to rub the entire grill down with oil including the coal basket ?
You're welcome anytime, my friend. I would make sure it's oiled because it is cast iron. That will help stop any rust from forming.
Great review of the Sportsman's Grill. I will have to try your recipe for sautéed radishes. Years ago I remember seeing a recipe by another CZcamsr for oven-baked radishes. She said it was the only way she could get her kids to eat them and like them. Apparently, when they're cooked it tames the flavor and they're more mild. A raw radish can have a harsh, peppery bite to it. Cooking mellows it out.
Thanks, RD! I was totally surprised the first time my wife made them, but I’m a believer now. If you haven’t ever had them, I recommend trying them at least once!
Very nice, Mike! I have looked at this grill forever and always kinda wanted it. The new design is great, I think!
I think so too, Dano! I especially like the ash tray and the draft vents.
I love the redesign of the ash catcher👍
Yes, me too, Bobbi ! That makes it so much easier to dump the ash!
I have the old style, this looks like a great update to the design!
It’s a great grill. I love mine. You did a very thorough and informative review.
Thanks, Big Lew! I love mine too!
Looks good to me! It is on my wish list. Thank you for the review, Mike. Stay safe and stay cool
You’re welcome, Sean, and thank you too, my friend! This is a cool grill, so you might as well grab one!
Rational behind the two bolts being the way it is was to allow the vent to work right and the ash tray to move in the middle.
sauteed radishes? never tried that..thanks for the review..not seen that grill..need one..
I love it great video, I had one back in 97 and someone stole it off of my porch been heartbroken ever since because it's hard to get ok ne unless you've got internet, gonna get one soon, thanks
That the 1st time in my 64 yrs I ever seen radishes cooked like that
They are good. Give it a try and let me know what you think about it ok!?
Great vid... now I want it
Thank you! In my opinion it is well worth it so I'd say go for it!
Sweet. Slide the tray out and kiss your ashes goodbye.
Looks like a big improvement over the old one. I love my old one, but the loose draft door and loading door are easy to misplace. I'm sure I'm not the only person who knows that. Dumping ashes is a little difficult too.
Yes, I like a couple of things about this new one, too, but I wish they had kept the bail handle! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, my friend!
I like radishes but have never had them cooked. I'll have to try this.
Heeey Mr. & Mrs. Cast Iron. Good to see y'all this Memorial day. 1st, love da grill, 2, love da new skillet, 3, IN LOVE with her holiday decorations, 4th, I've NEVER had radish cooked before & gonna try it, 5th, Mrs. Cast Irons hair is pretty must be a fresh trim. Looks like an awesome day for you 2 today. Hope y'all njoyd.
Good to see you too, Cynthia! We had fun making this together! You need to try those radishes for sure! I hope you’ve had a great weekend, and I wish you a better week ahead, my friend!
Thank you for the sweet comments. Yes I just got my hair trimmed! We used to have a big garden so I always made scarecrows so now we just have a few container plants but we still need scarecrows right?! 😂 We had a great time making this video. It was an absolutely beautiful day! Hope you have a great holiday! We are so thankful & grateful ❤️ 🇺🇸
My wknd was great. Weather was purrrrfect not too hott yet. & RIIIIGHT, never leave out da scarecrows. Y'all have a very blessed week too. Oooh, DEFINITLY trying da radishes. I'm a plumb fool for veggies.
@@cynthiawesley8470 I’ve ALSO never had radishes like that, I too will DEFINITELY be giving these a try…(minus the bacon🤣)
Hope you are having a fun safe Memorial Day weekend!
C'mon Rick let's go out on a limb🤣 I'm going all in, alllll da way! LOL. Now I can't do onion but can onion flakes. Allergic! Da Dr tried to explain what we difference & I chose to STAY medically ignorant being I have no plans on going to medical school. So I just follow da orders & do dried onion & BAAAACON!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I never found anybody love bacon like me.
I inherited my old Lodge decades ago, and the "improvements" aren't enough to get the the newer model.
I have been looking at these for years and never bought one. It looks like it might be time. Great video my friend.
Thanks, buddy. Yeah, they’re a great little grill, especially for two people!
Dude,! I'm impressed. I'll subscribe.
I never thought of cooking radishes that way.
I like what you're doing.
Cool! Thank you! Yes, those radishes are worth trying!
Nice little grill, I have always liked Lodge products.
The sportsman grill was designed by BSR and has been around long before Lodge made them. Lodge took over the patent when they bought BSR.
You’re exactly right Keith! Thanks for sharing this with us my friend!
Sometimes they just have to change things just to look good. Not because it needs to be changed.... They will change the new one too. But that one needs to change....
You may be right Wayne!
Nolan had three legs it was tippy dangerous
Loved your detailed explanation about the pro grill I'm going to purchase one 👌 also I think food tastes better cooking with charcoal apposed to gas!
Thank you! When you get your grill, just remember it gets very hot. You will need to keep a close eye on it! Thanks again for watching, and happy cooking, my friend!
Perhaps expansion and contraction reasons for 2 bolts instead of 4? And I think is should have had a replaceable bottom grate like the previous one as the most ware will occur there. As it is now, the whole grill body is shot if the charcoal grate fails.
Yeah, I guess time will tell how it will hold up! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, Andrew!
Never heard of sauted radish but want to try that
I still like the previous version more, but I do want to get this one some time or another. Kind of a grill collector, and I love Lodge. Never have I done radish like that.
I hear ya, brother! I’ve collected more stuff than I have room for, lol! Yeah, those radishes are so good! I think if you try them, you will be pleasantly surprised!
I used to use an electric starter on my grill. No dumping hot coals, just pull it out when the coals are ready. No nasty lighter fluid flavor.
Dump the spray and oil the grids with regular cooking oil using a heat proof silicone brush.
Good tip! Thanks for sharing this with us, my friend!
Wish the grill body was made of the same material as the grate. It would be awesome if they made one where the housing was cast aluminum.
I just recently got one of these for an early fathers day gift, since it was kinda heavy in the box, I had to move it for my wife....but I've used this three times already and its so quick and simple to use, big enough just for the two of us. What I would like to find is a cover for this. I do have a question, I debated about taking it with us on some trips, but it takes hours for it to cool back down. Do you have any tricks/tips on how to cool one of these faster?
That's cool! I bet you were surprised to get that early present! I also have the older model of this grill, and the grill cover fits these, too, from what I understand. Unfortunately, I don't have a cover, but maybe I should get one. The only thing really is a little time as far as cooling down the grill. After we cooked in the video, it didn't take all that long, maybe 30 minutes to an hour, and it was ready to put away.
They made it better especially sliding out the drawer to empty the charcoal & also not as many pieces to keep up with 💯 better hands down
Had one on a stand . Very usefull.
Thats cool! Thanks for sharing this with us, my friend!
I like the old version better, I also like to use the Weber little Smokey grill the advantage to that is it has a lid to allow smoking the meat it saves charcoal because you put the cover on grill and when your done and use the charcoal again unlike the Lodge Sportsman grill
I hear ya! I like the bail handle better on the old style than the hooks but overall it's not too bad
wait but you didn't go into if the old verson or this new one was better do you have a video on that one?
No I don’t have a video other than this one which I did mention the differences and changes that were made.
Great video Mike!
Thanks, buddy!
Still no way to adjust height, except the flip, which is a lot of fun after the grate has been over fire for a while.
For the price you have to pay for that cast-iron piece I'll stick with my Weber portable grill because it's much cheaper and easier to travel with plus it has a lid
I have the sportsman pro and the kick off grill, the problem I have with both is they get too hot on the outside and bottom which crack my ceramic tile countertop, so I set them on red bricks, but the grills still get too hot.
Yes they do get hot!
Visit your local masonry dealer a get a few Fireplace Bricks to rest your grill on.
@@addisonesslinger3653 Good idea, thank you!
👏🏼. Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great video Mike, Dinner is served!!!
Thank you Thomas! Dinner was very good and it was partially Keto too lol!
@@MrCastIron yes it was..lol..
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. Thumbs-up ~John
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
The biggest question I have is about the grill cooking surface. My “original” sportsman grill has the flat surface up vs the new has the flat surface down. I grill a lot of salmon, cod, and halibut. Up vs down changes the grill temp considerably. I’m concerned about how the new grill will do with delicate seafood that will fall apart when I have to turn over to cook the other side. I like that there is more cooking surface area, but I’m not convinced that turning the grill “upside down” was a good decision! Does anybody have any thoughts or related experience?
Chris I haven’t cooked any fish or seafood on mine yet but I don’t see a problem with either one of them. I like different things about each of them and there are a couple things I don’t like as much.
Go to an antique store. Buy an old one for $12. Clean the heck out of it. Sand off rust. Just get it uber clean. Then season it in a 509 f oven and it's better than new. $150 this!
Hey Mike! I never knew that Lodge made one of these grills! So neat! It seemed to do a great job with the chicken for sure! Loved seeing Teresa being your taste tester!
Thanks, Karen! Yes, Lodge has had a little hibachi-style grill for years. Yes, I think she enjoyed it about as much as I did!
This is so cute and great... I'm still tyying to figure out how I could set this up. I just want a small grill I can take camping and not leave outside, or take with me when I travel. As I love grilled food! I just need to figure out exactly how to get the charcoal going as I don't have something like you
I don’t use lighter fluid to start charcoal, but you can soak a couple of paper towels with bacon grease and place the charcoal on and around it. Light the paper towels, and that will help to light the charcoal.
Go get Weber smokey Joe jumbo grill, it's 14 inches and you will love it. Bank the The charcoal on the side and use a fire starter and you'll be fine. It's a very nice little grill and you'll love it.
I don’t have one of those Weber grills, but they seem like pretty cool grills too!! Thanks for sharing this with us, my friend!
@@waynethebarber1095 thanks I’ll look into it
The old version was never Lodge. They bought the design from BSR when they went out of business. I have both versions and love them both.
Yessir! You are so right! Thanks for sharing this with us my friend!
I looked at these at the Lodge Factory Store when we were at the Cornbread Festival but I was waiting for the price to come down before I tried it out. I'm still debating on if I want to get a weber instead. I take forever to buy anything. They will have a new one out before I make my mind up. 😀
Lol! I hear you, Chastity! I usually don’t get in too big of a hurry either on most things. But I sure do like this newer version grill!
Thanks for your sharing
You’re welcome my friend!
Looks like a well designed unit.
Where did you find the "fisk"?
Yes it works pretty good! The Fiskie is here: amzn.to/3GNdadT
A great video that grill would be great for people that live in apartments. In your video at the Lodge Store. There was ben with 10" Skillets for under $13.00. I can not find them on Lodge's website. Can you tell me how to find them? Awesome video thanks for sharing. Stay well & safe.
Yes, sir, it is perfect for apartment living, tailgating at sporting events, and outdoors. Unfortunately, I don't think you can order from the Lodge Outlet store, but we have several good deals on our Amazon Store if you would like to check there. Our affiliate link for Cast Iron is www.amazon.com/shop/mr.castiron. Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you stay well and safe too, my friend!
I need one of these!
Yeah, they are pretty cool little grills!
You can still get a new "old" Sportsman Grill from Lodge. They still sell all of the parts for the old version individually, and I just ordered all 9 pieces, including the cover, from their website. Today is the last day for their summer savings coupons, and with the coupon added I got mine for $144 plus tax and free delivery. It's an option if someone wants the old style but doesn't want to pay the criminal prices on eBay that sellers are trying to get.
That’s cool! Thanks for sharing this with us, my friend!
Did the pieces all come in one box?
Yes, they do on a new one anyway.
@@grc5618 some of the pieces of the original grill are on back order, hope they continue to make them
Hello, thanks for the video! I did have a question about the size of the grill. I would like to buy a skillet for it, but im not sure what size. What size was the 25 year skillet? thanks for the info!
You’re welcome! The 25 year skillet is an 8 inch. Thanks for the question my friend!!
Hello I’d like to know the size of the skillet you were using in this video. An inch is a typo I believe. If you can update, that would be great. If you listed somewhere else already, the sorry!
@@Ray-js8sl it is an 8 inch. Sorry about that my friend!
So,,,an addendum to my prior comment! Does anybody know if the 4 legs of the original grill match/fit on the new charcoal base? Can these be used interchangeably? That may be enough to push me over the edge to get the new grill.
Great question Chris! Yes they will fit both grills.
@@MrCastIron Thanks! That’s what I was hoping for!
Cool! You’re welcome anytime my friend!
Does the reversible grill fit on top of it?
Yes it will.
Hey Mike buddy I'm sorry I guess I missed this one. I've been wanting one of these grills but I'm not sure. I'd like to find one of the old round ones. Which do you like best? I dont know if you can but I'd like to see someone cook ribs on it
I bet you could if you wrap them after you get the color you wanted? See ya buddy!
Thanks, Hillbilly! I have both of the Sportsmans grills. I like certain things about both of them. I haven’t ever done ribs on them before, but I figure you could. Thanks again, buddy, and have a great week!
Lots of reasons I will stick with my old version of the original Sportsman’s which I’ve had since 2005. Still looks brand new because I clean and keep it seasoned all the time. Actually cleaning and seasoning the entire original is easier than doing this Pro version. Easier access to all surfaces. Draft door system on original much better, access door to fire bowl, etc…….
I hear ya, Michael! I have both too, and each one has its own best features. I would like to see Lodge combine all of those into one awesome grill that everyone loves! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feedback with us, my friend!
@@MrCastIron Mr. Cast Iron, I also line my fire bowl with aluminum foil underneath the removable charcoal grate all the way up the sides on my original. Cuts way down on cleaning with the original. You can’t do that with the Pro because charcoal grate is not removable. Big deal breaker for me. Thanks for the video, I’m grilling those thighs and radishes. Radish dish in the 9” cast iron skillet.
Yeah, that’s an excellent point, Michael! I wish I had a good ole grill chicken thigh about now, lol! Thanks for sharing this with us, buddy!

What's more, the Sportsman grill has been around since the 1930s. Birmingham Stove & Range produced the exact same grill for over 40 years until it went out of business in 1992. They passed on the design of the Sportsman grill to Lodge as part of their debt settlement.
Yes, that is right, but I forgot to mention that, Eric! Heck, I couldn't even get my math right, lol! Thanks for stopping by and checking it out, my friend, and we sure appreciate all you do for the cast iron community!
Wow this year the new cast iron pan
Yes it came out in February!
Never seen radishes cooked have to try it!!
Yeah give them a try! They are pretty good!
Oh yeah. That looks delicious.
Thanks, Bones!
Back in the day the grill came with an oval cast iron tray/pan to use atop of the grill or use as a lid for slower grilling. Maybe 40 years ago.
Have you seen or heard any reviews on the IronMaster CI-2020
Hi Luis. Yes, I have seen these. They are made in China and are very similar in design to the Lodge Sportsman grill. I don’t have one or used one, but I’m sure they would work just fine. Thanks for the question, my friend, and have a great day!!
