- Compost shouldn't be so hard. Instead of measuring "greens" and "browns" and constantly turning your pile, why not let the chickens do it for you?! I will show you a surprisingly simple, zero-labor method to turn wood chips into nutrient-dense compost!

Ryan you helped me fill my coop area with wood chips last fall. The chickens are digging down now in the Spring and the chips/ soil underneath just looks black and rich. It used to be harder clay
Glad to here it, thats even faster than I expected!
Nice short simple useful video :)
Glad it was helpful!
This is a great setup. I do basically the same thing, but my chicken run is on a slight hill. The birds naturally push the finished compost out of the run to the lower part of the run over time. The wire fencing of my run does the sifting for me!
Mine is on a slight hill too and that's a great idea! I put a short drystacked rock wall on contour below the run that catches the tailings and creates a flat terrace where I planted a small orchard (video on that to come when things green up again).
Lol. Ryan sounds sharper than Cappy's comical description, cappy is a clown 😂 but we like him that way lol. Guys, let's get this dude up with the likes
Thanks for the support! My wife and I laughed pretty hard at the his reenactment of past events 🤣
We use wood chips too. They work great. The girls like to scratch around and on top of the clean pile behind the coop/run. Thanks from Ontario
Wood chips are like a playground for chickens!
Thank you for this video. I am going to be starting to have chickens this year and appreciate the pointers!
You’re welcome, and good for you!

Over 900 subs now. Fantastic! Congratulations.
Yes sir, it’s pretty crazy 🤯
How deep do you lay the wood chips? I'm assuming you could use hay as well if that's easier to get. But won't last as long. Is that right?
Anywhere for 3”-9” on the wood chips. I don’t use straw or hay because they have VERY little end grain and do not absorb ammonia or nitrogen well. You will end up with a very stinky coop and run very quickly. The same is true for wood shavings, they have very little end grain.
I don’t even bother spreading anything. Just dump it in the run. Chickens spread it themselves.
@@angelastevens9137 is correct no need to spread it, the chickens do that for you :)
Nice vid. How do you compost human waste? also how do you protect your wood house? Lightning rod?
Human waste is a more complex issue that books have been written about. Generally speaking, you would compost it in a 2 year pile separate from other compost systems. Look up "humanure" if you are actually interested in such things.
I want you to get your 4,000 hours now. How? you might ask. Create a subject grouping with every one of your videos in it. Then let your subscribers know what you have done. We can then watch them in the background to get you watching time. While we are doing other computer work.
Interesting idea! So you're suggesting making a playlist that has all the videos on it... I can manage that!
@@thehomesteadconsultant yes then let us know when you have done that. We can then just "watch" them in the background while working on other things.

@@thehomesteadconsultant great now make a video to let your new subs know what I'm doing and invite them to do it also. Ask them to watch at speed 1 so you get the full-time credit. Feel free to mention my name if you want but I don't need any mention.
@@thehomesteadconsultant also ask everyone to make comments or like on comments and the video if they wish to help the channel go more viral.
