@@Lunaria.Praesentia Adel should've been the new protagonist, Shun'Ei sucks. He's the perfect tragic hero, son of an evil madman but trying to follow his own path. Rock fits this bill as well.
I would have liked to see this character as sorta of a rival for Rock Howard. It would have probably motivated the writers to do more with Rock too. Since they could played off the whole "Born in a bad Family and trying to make things right" aspect for both of them.
KOF XV's resurrection plot, alongside the fact that Heidern has signed up for the tournament (something he only ever did canonically once after Leona's introduction) makes pretty damn clear to me that Rugal is coming back, if not in XV proper, at least the seeds will be planted for the sequel. And that'll be the golden opportunity for Adel and Heidern to work together to get rid of Rugal again and bury the hatchet once and for all. ...who am I kidding, Shun'ei will probably beat him instead, won't he?
I keep forgetting that Heidern is a good guy. He looks so much like a stereotypical bad guy evil military man. His moves are a stabby and scary too, it blew my mind when I learned he's a big-time good guy.
Adel has the most wasted potential in all KOF, imo. Not only he wasn't as prominent in the Ash saga as much as they want us to believe, but, as you also said, he had lots of potential story interactions to add as well. Not to mention that, Verse shenanigans aside, Rugal will hardly be able to become a permanent character ever. I can understand him making one return, since he's such an iconic villain in KOF, but Adel was the perfect chance for SNK to have Rugal indirectly as a permanent playstyle represented in the game. I seriously think Adel deserves another chance, especially considering the period of the Ash saga was the most troublesome one for SNK's new characters to make an impact, with all the artstyle and economic shifts
Adelheid and Heidern are getting a collection in KoF Allstars in 2 days dedicated to them, which is super cool. It's ironic how I have been wanting Adel back in a real KoF game for a long time, and he still isn't back yet, but this should tide me over until that day that hopefully shows up.
It hurt even more that Adel was cut from XIII when you look at some interview with the devs regarding the Ash Saga, and hear they saying he was supossed to be the co-protagonist with Ash. Hopefull, he get a chance to shine in the future

Some little comments about the video: -Ryu, Ken and Goku did in fact appeared in KOF 98... Sort of. In an interview with the developers stated that they finished the game with some extra time to kill and they decided to include them just for fun, i could imagine the sprites were ripped from maybe alpha and some snes dragonball game, i don't know really but i doubt an artist would waste time on something that wont be payed for and won't see the light of day. -Aside from cut characters, there were also cut costumes, this was due to time constraints and to "save money", this was made certain characters forced to share a body (Mature/Vice, Joe/Hwa Jai, Ralf/Clark, Ash/DarkAsh/Saiki) those characters share also certain moves which made the team save some time (The Ikaris had their models fully done so i think was a waste really). -We know for certain that Geese would've made the cut since he also had his own theme, the devs said Geese wasn't included due to the system not fitting him but obviously was due to time and budget, like other characters (including Adelheid)

That same person even showed some un used characters including one of the members from "those from the past"(that kid who tried to attack Heidern in KOF 13 story mode or was arcade ending was going to be in KOF 12)? I believe it. Ignition Entertainment was the same company that gave us a terrible english dub for Arc Rise Fantasia and tried to take the license away from Xseed.
I want him to be in KOF XV SO MUCH BRO, like i honestly do not understand why they dont use him like they should, he was a huge part of the ash saga and honestly think he was more of a worthy protag then ash crimson.

It could be, if CAPCOM made an update to a game that was 20+ years old (SF2) adding new characters (I know those were recolors of existing characters, but maybe SNK still had a couple of almost-finished characters) i can see SNK putting a KOF XIII final edition

I can wait for later DLC, it's cool, but he's gotta get his ass back in. Easily one of the most screwed characters. it's one thing to get left out due to time/resources(like a few characters you can tell were-Oswald was just introduced in XI, and he was probably due back in for example), it's another when you're called the 'other protagonist' and you end up screwed. You'd think they'd have prioritized him over Hwa Jai and Raiden in development, but I guess they underestimated the cost. Severely. In any case-he and Rugal can easily be in the game together. As someone who didn't quite get into playing R in '98 playstyle wise(he was pretty cool but there were others I liked more), I loved playing Adel in XI and he's my main anchor there. Some shared moves, a shared style, but they have different enough playstyles(R's more 'big boy buttons' that I found better as a point or mid, Adel is meter-heavier, high damage aggressive rushdown anchor.) They'd both I think fill different enough niches gameplay wise. (plus, the shared moves benefit; can use the assets between them.)
I still find it super weird that they had Billy in this game as a single entry random mid boss with his only story reason to be there being he wants to kill Iori, but didn’t prioritize Adel instead.
Regarding King of Fighters XIII, the fact we never got a Team with 3 of the bad guys from the "Ash Saga" is still disapointing. Especialy with all the "Botan", "Shroom" and "Rimelo" teasing we got though KoF'03, KoF XI and XIII
The game meant to celebrate king of fighters 15th anniversary and according to Shane Ben hauser the business director for ignition entertainment who poured kof 12 to home consoles this game was meant to follow the theme: the rebirth of kof!!

At least with Hwa, he and Joe shared sprites. They put in Billy over Adelheid. They put in Billy over GEESE. Out of all the characters, they went and made BILLY a random solo-entry?! I get that Billy has fans sure (allegedly), but did he need to make it in instead of the 3rd-most important character to the story? It'd be like Isla only showing up in cutscenes instead of being a playable character. XIII was really missing its own villain team to make that iteration's roster stand out, which I guess would've been Botan/Shroom/Rimello (the girl mind-controlling Rose + the two characters that attack Kyo at the start of the intro). Frankly, the notion of teams and sticking to them also did its part to hold that roster back, something they clearly realized with 15 by pretty much doing whatever they wanted in terms of team composition. Did people really love Chin so much that he had to be one of the characters they put down so many resources to make, or did they just have to include him because "it's not the Psycho Soldier Team without him!" Also, they never committed to Elisabeth being the hero of that game, since even in all the cover artwork it's Ash or Kyo that's most prominent with Liz being off to the side. Even at the character select screen, the first character the cursor lands on is Kyo and not the hero team leader, Liz.

I'd guess that the entire art direction for XII and XIII are prime examples of sunk-cost fallacy. Even if they kept reusing them as they did the original neo geo sprites, their active roster would probably barely be scraping XIV numbers. That said, it is a shame to throw all that work in the trash.

Terry should've teamed up with Billy and Raiden for this installment while Iori should've teamed up with Kim and K'(odd choice, i know). All these cut characters that were either planned to be playable or had some sprites made for them just make me want to see a KoF XIII Unlimited Match. Sure it's a canon game but it may as well be the Ash saga's real dream match since XII was such a disaster.

Back in the day…when I finally bought XIII I loved it…even though I was a scrub back in the day I really enjoyed it…however looking back at it…it’s kinda overrated nowadays. Good, but overrated. It was one of two games that damn near killed SNK in general.

Fun fact adel was originally going to be a woman but this was changed right before 03's release. The change was so late that they didn't have time to reflect the change in Adel's sprite work
considering how difficult was to draw characters for kof xiii i find hard to believe snk would waste any time on adel, heck the sprite recycling in this games is more than obvious (mature-vice, ralf-clark, joe hwai, takuma-mr karate)
Ok hear me out. Adelheid as the next protagonist after Shun'ei. The son of the most beloved villain in the franchise and an incomplete story arc and I can see the new Team Hero with Adelheid, Heidern, and either Rose or a brand new character
I think it would be cool to see SNK put a halt on the new characters for awhile and focus on the ones they have for a little while. Seeing Adel be protagonist of the next arc would be so sweet.

Back in the day…when I finally bought XIII I loved it…even though I was a scrub back in the day I really enjoyed it…however looking back at it…it’s kinda overrated nowadays. Good, but overrated. It was one of two games that damn near killed SNK in general.

Fun fact adel was originally going to be a woman but this was changed right before 03's release. The change was so late that they didn't have time to reflect the change in Adel's sprite work

Ok hear me out. Adelheid as the next protagonist after Shun'ei. The son of the most beloved villain in the franchise and an incomplete story arc and I can see the new Team Hero with Adelheid, Heidern, and either Rose or a brand new character
I think it would be cool to see SNK put a halt on the new characters for awhile and focus on the ones they have for a little while. Seeing Adel be protagonist of the next arc would be so sweet.
