Best scene so far.
At the start of the series, there are over a dozen dragons in the possession of House Targaryen, but only four have riders. Prince Daemon rides Caraxes, a large and ferocious beast called the Blood Wyrm out of reverence and fear by alllies and enemies alike. Rhaenyra rides Syrax, a young dragon that hatched in her cradle, guaranteeing an instant bond.
We have yet to see the other two - another young blue-grey dragon named Seasmoke ridden by Laenor Velaryon, probably hatched in the cradle like Syrax. Finally, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen rides Meleys, an old, cunning and powerful red dragon that she inherited from her aunt, Alyssa Targaryen.
This our first glimpse of the fascinating concept of a medieval version of brinksmanship - much like our nukes, Dragons are not only Weapons of Mass Destruction, but Weapons of Mutually-Assured Destruction. If you don't have a dragon, you are completely powerless when facing someone who does. If you both have dragons, any sort of conflict between you could be disastrous - but you still must seem ready and able to use the dragon in order for the deterrent to be deemed credible. For two conflicting factions, both must constantly strive to have the most/biggest dragons.
By simply showing up with a dragon, Rhaenyra showed herself to be vastly more important than any of the King's men - she and Daemon are simply on another level, showcased well in the plot by their switch to High Valyrian.
Notably, Princess Rhaenys and several other characters also have dragons that we have yet to see, which is somewhat surprising

I love that it is clear that daemon isn't trying to hurt his family. They make it very clear that he kinda did all of this so that the king would should up. He actually wanted his family to show up not Otto so when Otto came he wasn't responsive but when Rhaenyra came to speak to him he very quickly dropped the tough act.
Daemon is not a bad guy, he's just misunderstood, even when after Baelons death he really was mourning, and not just fooling around, he didn't take Mysaria just because he wanted to, he cares about her and wants to give her protection. He genuinely cares about his family and Otto is the one who's after power
I am going to call it right now, Rhaenera and daemon will have sex. There is strong attraction and sexual tension between the two characters.
Daemon so far seems like he's just acting out half the time. Daemon seems to just wants his brother's approval/attention. I think he feels overlooked, just like Rhaenyra feels overlooked, and hates that his brother trusts the snake Otto more than him.

It appears they considered Caraxes anatomy and purposefully made his roar higher pitched due to his long neck. The attention to detail in this series is incredible.

I hear the dragons are getting alot of love in this show. We only got 2 episodes and attention to detail is already better then all of GoT imo.
The way caraxes flies doesn’t make sense and honestly I don’t like his design for his legs. I’d rather see his wings webbing go all the way down his tail. Would make more sense for a creature that long

Yeah Caraxes is like a higher pitch marine mammal with possible bird distress calls.
While Syrax has deep bellowing vocals that could have been sampled from a Rhino or elephant then mixed with reptiles or marine mammals too.
It’s incredible that we already can tell the difference from roars alone.
I'll admit, I did not think Matt Smith was badass enough to play someone like Daemon Targaryen, but he captures the highs and lows of the character amazingly well. Theres a savage honesty to the portrayal that is really shining through. Milly Alcock as Rhaenyra will be dearly missed after the time skip. She nailed this role.

agreed. I'm looking forward to an aged up Rhaenyra, but not yet. Not this season. I feel like they're rushing that. Then again maybe not much of note happens in their lives after her father's new marriage until shit starts to fall apart around his death.

Caraxes reflects Daemon perfectly. They are both moody, different and terrifying. Books say Daemon was more of a snake than a Dragon meaning he's cunning AF and look at Caraxes, it has shape of a snake.
Caraxes definitely creeps me out and draws me in, I love the portrayal of his long slender neck it reminds me of a mermaids tail or a gorgons snake tail. It’s so beautiful yet revolting at the same time, it sounds dramatic but genuinely if dragons were real I would not want to be around Caraxes, he looks like he can swallow human beings whole with ease. Doesn’t he end up swallowing rhaenyra?

Did the books ever say that? Or did the voice actor just randomly decide to say it. Because I don’t think referring to daemon as a snake is very accurate. Especially since it was used to compliment aemond who is literally a weaker version of daemon

Bet D&D got jelous if they seen the premiere of the first ep, they just ruin maybe 3 of the 8 seasons they have and the 5th season was kind of like meh to us anyway.

Talk of strategy and counter strategy makes for a satisfying watch. This show doesnt treat its viewers like theyre dumb.
There's nothing intelligent going on here, just a confrontation between arrogant and entitled aristocrats that will all soon suffer for their drama and take thousands of people with them to the grave. You're not supposed to root for anyone in the source material, the Dance of the Dragons storyline is treated in universe as an example of shit leadership.

That entry by Rhaenyra riding Syrax coming out of the clouds at Dragonstone was just epic.
I love the detail in how Rhaenyra always seems like shes out of breath when getting off of Syrax. Shows the adrenaline that comes from riding Dragons and how difficult it must be to breathe at high speeds, something GoT didn't show with Daenerys
And she has a saddle and doesn't just inexplicably hold on at breakneck speeds
And the way she sort of having difficulty holding on to the reigns controlling Syrax just shows how difficult it is to ride a dragon. I always wonder how Daenerys turns without reigns and saddle lmao
@@veryshia the answer is "D&D's inattention to source material and detal". I pretty sure that in the books, Tyrion will help Dany construct a saddle, since he knows a lot about dragon lore and special saddles (he constructed one for Bran after his accident)

The way Targeryan’s can flex their nuclear weapons and force their opponents to yield has always been my favorite attribute about them. Even if Daemon didn’t have the Gold Cloaks Otto was still outmatched.

You can really see the power of the House here. Like Rhaenera said, without dragons they are just like everyone else. But with them they are incredibly powerful. You could see that Otto understood that with Caraxes they were outmatched until Rhaenera arrived and balanced the scales. They knew if Caraxes attacked Syrax would attack and both sides would end up burning. Without a dragon a Targaryen is so much less powerful and you can see why having so many dragons die/stop existing before Daenerys was born helped lead to the destruction of their house
If i could remember correctly, the decrease in number of dragons were also the reason why Targaryens decided to have wildfire developed.
Syrax doesnt stand a chance against the Blood Wyrm...a totally bad dragon worm

In the books Daenerys’ whole “dragons don’t burn thing” was a one off magic that protected her and she was able to be burned after hatching her dragons. But in the show she proceeded to never burn via fire. Then in House Pf The Dragon, we see Viserys (Rhaenyra’s father and Daemon’s brother) touch the flames of candles and not burn. This implies that he does not burn like Daenerys in the show probably because the magic of dragons flows through him or whatever. So there’s a high chance that in the show Rhaenyra and Daemon may not be able to be burned by flames including those of their dragons. After all if they adapted A Song Of Ice And Fire and made it so Daenerys couldn’t burn there’s a high chance they’ll do it again...especially to show the power of House Targaryen,

I think despite his actions, Daemon loves his family. Only a family that possess deep love can call out each other’s bullshite. Like how Daemon tells his brother he isn’t fit to be King or how Rhaenyra knows that egging Daemon on to take her life would soothe his tantrum rather than stoke his desires for power. Daemon is rude to everyone but his actions are slightly dampened with his brother and his niece. It makes his character palatable. Kudos to Matt Smith for a deep and nuanced performance.
Best seen when hes talking with Corlys and he says "I will speak of my brother as I want, you shall not"

What really proved that Daemon just wanted to talk to Viserys and wanted his attention (just like a child with his parent) was that he brought the dragon egg with him. Viserys didn't pay attention to him occupying Dragonstone and he's frustrated because of that. He was intent on returning the egg because he knows Viserys would come for it and he made sure to pick Baelon's egg too. But he didn't know Otto would intervene. When he talked to Rhaenyra it was almost like he was complaining too lol. He desperately wants validation from his family and you already know that he would never betray Viserys and Rhaenyra just from this scene alone. What brilliant writing and character-building.

Exactly. It's made clear when Rhae asked if he would have a child then Daemon said that he would one day lmao. He just wants his family's attention 😭 And in the books he never really outright betray his family, not even Viserys. Only when Viserys died and the one in control of the throne was basically the Hightowers was when he started to openly rebel and even that is also helping Rhaenyra
Viserys banishing one of the few people with no intent on betraying him was a bad move.

this scene did a really good job of showing the power and importance of having a dragon. despite being on the king's side otto's group was completely outmatched until rhaenyra showed up with her own dragon to support them. its like deterrence.
viserys really is weaker for not having one, he is unable to deal with threats from dragonriders like daemon himself.
I wonder if there's a reason he never tried to ride another dragon after Balerion died. Or if he just did not want to.
The king does have his daughter and perhaps princess Rhaenys at this point in the story to confront Daemon if he goes off the cuff. But he won't, you can tell that even though Daemon might think Viserys is weak but he still thinks of him as the rightful king.
Later in the series Daemon will have an equally impressive opponent when Aemond one eye claims Vhaegar.

Targaryens are skilled at making epic entrances. The way Rhaenyra flew in with Syrax reminds me of Daenerys' arrival with Drogon in the Dragonpit (S07).
Or during the loot train battle. That scene still gives me goosebumps.
Fyi for the non book readers, Daemon is one of the best fighters on dragonback. Dude jumped off his dragon to kill another dragon rider in the skies.

In terms of best fighters on dragonback a string bond with ur dragon to be able to just think dracarys or other commands and the dragon doing it is enough. Only rhaenys and daemon do it jn this stage.
Otto really out here threatening Daemon’s baby momma when the dude has 2k gold cloaks and caraxes 😂😂. If it wasn’t for Rhaenyra they’d be ash.
Otto wanted Daemon forced into rebellion and open war against the crown so he could dispose of him. He is probably the only person that may challenge Otto's ploy for power. That is until Rhaenyra showed up as she is looking to be a more formidable threat than he anticipated. I assume Otto is going to turn his eye to her pretty soon.
@@shadysorkin9214 Yeah I figured but Otto wouldn’t be able to do much scheming as a pile of ashes. Also Viserys loves Daemon too much, and with how weak he is he’d more likely give his bro a scolding even for killing Otto.
@@xManAvenger In the throne room Daemon heard the amount of respect Viserys had for Otto, so I doubt it would be only a scolding, it would be seen as treason. I think Otto knows Daemon was just seeking attention and would not have gone to those lengths.
On multiple occasions Otto is unreasonably surprised when a situation headed towards bloody conflict actually turns out to have bloody conflict. He seems to think that if he arranges all the pieces on the board just right, everyone will just concede that he's won and he can just walk away. But it simply doesn't work like that.
When Daemon drew his sword, Otto looked genuinely shocked. He didn't imagine Daemon might straight up murder an envoy, when he REALLY should have expected that from Daemon. And then when Caraxes strolls up and instantly shows they're outmatched, you realise that Otto NEVER should have been so bold in threatening Daemon when Daemon had Caraxes the whole time.
I love how this shows dragons are intelligent and they have this connection to their riders, Caraxes senses Daemon in danger and comes out + could be he also sensed Syrax closer
Edit: oh and Syrax understanding Rhaenyra is sad/grieving, she did really make eye contact as if asking if she's okay. Beautiful creatures

Actually is important to take into consideration that Carexes was ready to make OTTO Wellington when he sensed daemon aggression. However, both Daemon and Caraxes heard the dragon and knew as at the moment the only two riders were Rhaenrya and daemon.
Daemon right away lower his sword when Rhaenrya wasn’t even on view yet, and that made Carexes lower his and even when Syrax flew by him he gave a gentle acknowledgment to Syrax and syrax didn’t seem aggressive towards daemon or carexes either.
Rhaenrya knew he would t hurt her. And also is yet another soft foreshadow for the future.

This isn't an adaptation bro. This is fresh writing hot off the oven. And frankly I love the casting and direction of Otto Hightower: like Tywin and Littlefinger rolled into one.
they are knocking it out of the park with the dialogue, they are really enhancing everything that is good about fire and blood book and trimming out all the fat, and the result is just magnificent

It's just remind me every time that source material doesn't require to write good dialogue.
He's not as cunning as Littlefinger or Tywin though. No way in hell either of them would have showed up to confront a Targaryen they knew had a dragon without a dragon. I don't know what Hightower was thinking outside of him desiring a death wish.
@@knight7se7en Nah, it makes sense. Daemon isn't as much of a loose cannon as people think. He was pouting/throwing a tantrum for his brother's attention here. Otto's plan was to go in, rile Daemon up, and then go back to Viserys and tell him that Daemon can't be controlled and to fully divide the brothers. If Viserys went himself, they would've resolved the situation. As hot-headed as Daemon is, he wouldn't kill them because it would be declaring open rebellion on the kingdom. Caraxes was purely there for intimidation. I think if Rhaenyra didn't come, Daemon would've let them leave but kept the egg (which Otto would've used to convince Viserys he's a lost cause).
I love that it shows Daemon never actually hated his family. He knows that his brother always stood by him and he also loves Rhaenyra. Even though he's very temperamental, even though Viserys basically banished him, he didn't even let that Velaryon guy insult his brother even when they're basically conspiring to challenge him. Daemon maybe cunning but he really loves his family

I noticed that these Dragons have these vocals that are the mixture of a bat, dolphin, whistle of a boiling kettle, elephant and a lion. I really like the mixture of these vocals, it creates its own unique Dragon vocals.
I absolutely love the look and sound of Caraxes. Definitely not the stereotypical dragon look.
I’m totally with you on this. Caraxes is offically my most favourite dragon design, I know he’s some kind of deformed due to breeding or his wyrm-ish shape. His every on-screen-second gives me goosebumps. Love to know the mysterious artists who came up with the design.
I think what makes this scene feel the real tension is the dragons screeching and then the build up of the silence. Nothing says power and respect more than an entrance. Such a great scene.
If D&D had written this episode, I wouldn't have been surprised if Daemon would've thrown the egg at Rhaenyra and she would've dropped it and be like "Oops" 🤣

I will admit… as much as I hate him… Otto is very smart. He knew all it would take for daemon to give up was for viserys to talk to him; Otto is quick to insist he goes to dragonstone. The two hate each other and that is exactly what Otto counts on.I feel his target will now start to shift on rhaenyra as she disobeyed orders and single handled showed she is above Ottos machinations and is uncontrollable.

You can see that he is surprised... he fully intended to have Daemon killed.. he did everything to get Daemon disinherited.. he knows Daemon is strong and he thought Rhaneyra was a weak girl easily controlled until this scene.. she shows that she is more ready than he thought

They did not give her enough credit for being a badass and intelligent enough to do what Otto Hightower could never have done and get Daemon to cooperate without bloodshed.

I love how Daemon is so careful with what he's saying in order to make the display of power he wants while also not declaring outright war (which he might have done had Viserys come himself), demonstrating this is a reasonably thorough plan, only for Rhaenyra to effectively say "Your betrothed is visibly not pregnant lol" and he's kind of just like "Ah... damn it." Otto had good reason to not point it out despite probably noticing too. A bastard child is good reason for conflict between brothers. Daemon counted on that and Viserys likely would have believed him even if others insisted it was a lie. But Rhaenyra just instantly calls his bluff in front of him.

It’s always fun to see new dragons, blood wyrm looks awesome and sounds just about how you would expect it to sound since compared to the other dragons it is deformed so the roar comes out as a guttural high pitched screech, they’ve done a good job and I look forward to see more of this

I don’t see how people can’t understand that Hightower is manipulative as hell. Daemon is brash and it’s kind of hard for people to not see him as arrogant but he truly cares about his brother and kingdom.
