    HOLY CRAP I'M FAMOUS! Glad my instructions worked out for you! With a little practice, you'll get the feel right and be able to do this without scratching. In my garage, I use a crude lever contraption bolted to my workbench because it's faster, but this works out in the field. It works even better when it's a real roadside flat, because the tire is still warm. It usually takes two or three tries to break the bead, and for #2 you might have had a slightly easier time a little closer to the original spot.

    All I can say is that learning these little tricks is the difference between a lot of blood and anger. I've been using a long 2x4 and a small piece of 2x4 as the 'breaker' that pushes down on the tire. I stick the wheel under my car and use the body of the car as the wedge point to lift up on the long board and push down on the sidewall with my small 2x4 piece. It works, and doesn't scratch up paint or destroy the rubber of the tire if it's going back on. But I also own these same three tire irons in the video and I'm going to try it out on older bikes and dirt bike tires.

    • @TheRidingObsession
      @TheRidingObsession  Před 6 měsíci

      Yup. Your method plays well. Our take on it has more to do with either a) preference or b) limited roadside options. On any other day, we'd use a No-Mar or your in-house setup with all of its forgiving leverage. But to know that the above technique works means riders have another tool in their shed, be it a default or last resort. As for bead breaking with a 2x4: czcams.com/video/dTgntzSPVWo/video.html

  • @scottw.8871
    @scottw.8871 Před 3 měsíci +1

    I wanna set that with a GT tire. The Mich's are butter compared to other tires. I've changed dozens over the years doing track days. AND, I learned the hard way NOT keeping my rims on 2x4's. Cost me a set of rotors. These floating rotors can bend much easier than the old school fixed ones. We need the video of the cussing and swearing/throwing the tire iron around 🤣🤣🤣

    • @TheRidingObsession
      @TheRidingObsession  Před 3 měsíci

      You're right. For a dual compound tire, the Mich sidewalls are definitely more forgiving than that of the Dunlop Roadsmarts. With the Dunlops, it's as if they forgot to turn off the steel belt machine and let them run all the way to the edge 🤣. HOWEVER ... for per-instance, roadside, ain't no other way solutions, this is a good technique to know.
      At no point in the video or article are we suggesting this to be "the" way to change tires. More, it's "a" way to change tires should a replacement be available minus anyone to work on it. True sport touring has a tendency to put experienced riders on curvy, rural roads and with that, last-resort knowledge never hurts.

    Hope you don't mind, but I would like the something here for bikers going jobs on the rear wheel. When putting on the new tire, you will find it easier to do it with the disk brake on the ground and the chain side on top. As I discovered the hard way, doing it the other way around makes it difficult with the spoons at time as the disk brake gets in the way..

    Another very effective method is to buy an 8-inch C-Clamp from homedepot, then grind off the workpiece head (the part that swivels around) til its completely flat. I tried doing it while the swivel was still on and there is too much play but its still doable. Taking off the swivel makes bead breaking effortless when both ends are rigid and if you dont mind the extra 1-2lbs you can store the clamp anywhere on the bike where its not interfering with anything else.

    • @TheRidingObsession
      @TheRidingObsession  Před rokem

      Great tip! That's one of those pieces of kit that is shaped to maintain airspace, meaning it's rigid but hollow (so not a lot of room needed in the go-bag). Good thinking.

      @slept-on_SP Před rokem +1

      @@TheRidingObsession I think the tire spoon trick is still definitely viable for those that are looking to keep cargo as light as possible since the c-clamp kind of only serves one purpose while the tire spoons would still be needed regardless but it works well. I keep one at home and one under my seat since I only have 2 tire spoons at the moment.

Put the tire irons close together, try to get the middle one to move just an itty bitty bit, then move just a little to one side, and repeat. Also, try to get something slippery in there. Tire mounting lube is best, or a thin soap solution. If you use Windex or similar, make sure it's all cleaned off the wheel.
