- A playthrough of Acclaim's 1995 license-based beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo, Todd McFarlane's Spawn: The Video Game.
Spawn's game barely registered as a blip on the radar when it was released in the waning days of the SNES's relevance, but those that were still invested in the platform received something quite special here.
Todd McFarlane's Spawn: The Video Game is a 2D side-scrolling platformer/beat 'em up with an edgy, gritty aesthetic that draws heavily from the comic upon which it is based. If your first impulse is to dump it in the ignore pile because of the Acclaim logo on the box, take heart: it was actually developed by Ukiyotei, who had already thoroughly proved themselves with Hook and Skyblazer.
Unlike those titles, though, this one is far darker in tone, and it focuses much more closely on hand-to-hand combat than it does on standard platforming conventions.
Taking up the mantle of Spawn (the undead figure of Al Simmons, an ex-government agent who traded his life for superpowers), you've got to save thirteen children who have been taken by your "creator," Malebolgia.
The game plays out in a fashion fairly similar to that of Capcom's X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse: you have powers (both offensive and defensive in nature, executed with Street Fighter II-like commands) to supplement your array of standard punches and kicks. These powers draw upon your spirit, so while they all have their uses, you'll need to be judicious in your use of them. If the spirit gauge hits zero, it's curtains for Spawn, no matter his many lives he might have in reserve.
This system takes a bit of getting used to, but it's well- balanced enough that you won't find yourself in danger of this unless you rely on using those moves incessantly. The combat flows well, generally speaking, but it requires a lot of practice and a fair amount of memorization before it feels completely comfortable and fluid. Spawn is a rewarding game, but it's not an easy one. Not by a long shot.
The graphics and sound are pretty amazing here, and it's clear that the development team went to some lengths to ensure they showed McFarlane's work its due respect. The cutscenes look phenomenal, using large, clear digitized images of comic panels, and in-game, there is a lot of detail and color strewn through the environments. The animation is also top-notch - just check out the way Spawn's cape flows around him as he lays waste to the bad guys! The music is a good complement to the on-screen action too, with its subdued orchestrations being appropriately moody and somber. The soundtrack suits the anti-hero well.
Spawn isn't a perfect game - it can be frustratingly difficult at points, and the gameplay grows a bit long in the tooth by the time you finally reach the end, but those things don't stop it from being an extremely solid action game. Spawn might not hit the heights that Batman's best 16-bit games did, but it has got style to spare, and it'll satisfy anyone that enjoys a good beat 'em up.

That intro when the helicopter light shines on Spawn as the drums kick in will forever live in my head rent free.
I can hear Keith David as Spawn.
In case you were wondering about those numbers in the upper right corner, if it reaches zero. It’s game over, you’ll going straight to Hell...
Props to the dev team for staying faithful to the source material on that subject.
No, you'll going straight to hell
@@MasterDecoy1W It was more like he could use the power of the Mad One for his own purposes, so he rewarded Spawn with more hellish power.
I never knew you could do all those different powered abilities!! That would have helped me sooo much when I was a kid 😂 love this vid! Thank you
Me Too Long Time Before Eternal & Armageddon Bro
It's necessary to the game, plus it relies on a combo system that's similar to Street Fighter.
Such a classic game. You played this very well
Thanks! :)
This makes realize how much I miss snes, the punch and hit sound, and music.
Spawn deserves a comeback. And when he dose, it should be the big kind of comeback.
Movie has been announced for a while now.....so......ya......
@Nicht von dieser Welt its true. Todd McFarlane got Jamie Foxx for Spawn/Al Simmons already though the style is going to be different. Its going to follow the two detectives ( Twitch and Sam) who are trying to figure out what Spawn is/is up to. Spawn is supposed to be more of a Jaws element where you dont see the shark very often but when you do, its usually bad ass and over the top action. I have high hopes
@@danemp4727 hopefully Netflix or something picks it up, I'm not hopeful of a wide release but anything can happen. I think filming starts soon.
July 17 I’d love to see Spawn get a theatrical release but the way studios have been micro managing superhero films of lately out of fear of the MCU, you’re right, a Netflix release would probably be more successful.
@@tweeztweet287 I agree, much more liberty with netflix as well. Seeeems like the Sy-Fy channel is really backing Todd McFarlane in this though so I'm really confused as to whats going to happen
This was one of my favorite games as a kid. It felt so badass playing as Spawn.
I don’t get the ending, what did Spawn get from Malebolgia? Why did spawn say NO?
@@MrMagoo-rg8er I have no idea. It's a mystery. I'm guessing infinite immortality.
@@MrMagoo-rg8er He's stuck as Spawn for eternity.
Impressive game. Impressive skill set, character and level design.
This dark and moody beat 'em up requires a fair amount of investment, but the top-notch presentation and the much deeper than usual fighting system make Spawn well worth the effort and time it takes to get into it.
*Good Lord* ,This is truly a game that's not afraid to kick your ass many, many times!
This is *no* _Double Dragon 3_ in terms of how hard it is, thankfully.
But, it's still a decent Beat Em' Up, though not without it's flaws.
...
What gift did malebolglia gave spawn and why did he looks so upset upon receiving it?
How does it compare to other games based on Spawn?
@@Invidente7 A website called World of Nintendo assumed that Al Simmons would be trapped in his Hellspawn form... Permanently.
@@vgaoct91 Honestly, I have no idea. I've never played the other ones.
This game randomly just popped in my head 🤣. I remember the summer my buddy and I set to be it. Man did we start getting frustrated lol. You don't have games like these anymore. Thank you for the vid! Brought back some good memories.
i never even knew thay made a spawn snes game
This game was Fken hard. At least it was better then PSN version.
They made a Gameboy color Spawn game too.
I can hear my SNES pad smashing on the ground from back in the 90s.
@ADEBISI ADEBISI it'S nO a TuMar aT AlL.
Probably the BEST Spawn game out there.
It could be, if someone hacked it and fixed the controls for the powers. It's enough to deal with managing your level over the entire game, the needlessly difficult inputs ruin it.
This guy makes this look easy. This game was HARD AS NAILS!
This actually looks like a fun and unique in depth beat em up
That's some beautiful pixel art on his sprite
Soundtrack dope AF
Yes these soundtracks were awesome. Takes me back
If they made a spawn game in the style of Rocksteady's Batman games I would die happy
I want Platinum to make a Spawn action game myself
@@HellRider_ So a spawn game in the style of Bayonetta? Could work honestly.
Same. He's got a varied enough power set, it'd be pretty fun to see what he can do in the 3d space.
@@HellRider_ absolutely not. We don't need yet another devil may cry game. Boring level based gameplay was supposed to stop at ps2.
@@mezoaim8957I heavily disagree. We already have spawn Armageddon and it was a commercial failure even if I bought it twice.
Watching this while watching the spawn movie again
Even it wasn't well received, I absolutely adored that movie as a kid. It aged ok, definitely a cult classic 90s style action movie.
It was a,awesome movie and that old game was fun and challenging
I could never pull off the special moves as a kid!! This guy is good
Wow! I didn't even know this was a game! Thanks for sharing.
Hard as balls. I take my hat off to you sir.
I like that you actually take damage in these videos. It’s impressive but so impressive that it seems impossible to replicate
I did not see the value of playing this game when i was thirteen and it was a new release. I lacked the patience to master the controls, but i'm glad you have. I see the full potential of this game now, thanks for that.
I remember playing this once on a rental. It reminded me of Capcom's X-Men, Mutant Apocalypse and Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems, but was much tougher than either of those games. Nice job beating this one!
This one's a best comic book games ever.
This is my new favorite channel!
This is a great game please remaster
I remember this game, I remember seeing my brother play this a bunch and holy crap it's hard. Also I think Spawn should be a DLC character for Mortal Kombat 11
Bianca Armstrong it’s been leaked that he will be
Cool playthrough. I liked that you utilized the in game abilities. Fun to watch.
I knew the flaming uppercut was real! I could never replicate it, though...
Dude omfg so many memories
I had this game when I was 10 in 1995 and I still love Spawn
Never really knew much about this game but its looks awesome!
I have great memories with it, it was a nice age for gaming. Games came out and you could just buy them at the store. Spawn in particular was simple, it was just fun and badass never got more complicated than that (except special moves)
Two interesting things from the story of the game. 1- Angela toke some time to intervene between Spawn and Redeemer 2- Kincaid died in the early issues when Spawn comics was still only starting. In the game not only Angela clearly sided Spawn instead, Kincaid also got killed for a more useful purpose to open a gate to right spot in some hell. It would have changed a lot of the original comics perhaps for the better.
I was thinking damn when did I miss this post but you just posted this how lucky am I especially since I not a subscriber I think I will now lol thanks for being active Amazing job
Np, and tyvm! :)
Now this is how a game should be reviewed
i remember this game as a kid i could only get about 3/4 of the way through it,its a pretty damn tough game
The literal "good version" of Spawn says he'll kill children if it'll help him get to Spawn.
Some champion of God he is.
God in spawn is kinda a dick. well every one is a dick.
That's crazy, not good nor a true champion!
I made sure this was loaded on my SNES classic
HighSpeedEnthusiast is it? 😀
still have the magazines with previews and reviews. good game , i wish ive played the game back in 95
Spawn is going to be in Mortal Kombat 11.
Even in low resolution the mans art still holds up
Castlevania + Streets of Rage = this.
What are you talking about? This game was boring as shit!
@ADEBISI ADEBISI That sounds somewhat messy and uncomfortable .
I thought i remembered the timer in top right constantly counting down.
I have that game, but never could finish it
Hold on, at 44:00 are those a reference of Mario and Luigi?
Yeah, after Bowser finally got Mario and Luigi they went straight to hell for killing so many innocent Goombas and Koopa Troopers that Malbolgia turned them into his Praetorian guards.
It's hilarious that the red one's fireballs bounce but the green one's go straight just like in Super Smash Bros, even though this game predates SSB64 by a few years.
😂
Mamma mia!
God damn I missed this game it was one of my favorite games next to maximum carnage
Classic brings back memories
44:01 The Plumbers of Hell...
I am sad that you we can no longer make side scrollers with about a dozen World Trade Centers in the background. Classic NYC video game set piece.
Man brings back memories great game
Nice, was just thinking of this gem.
I never knew this one existed, only played the Dreamcast and the one on PS2. Gotta check this one out, thanks for the upload!
12:27 With Angela now a Marvel character, no way could this game ever get re-release.
Angela from what?
@your face reminds me when i stepped on my burrito Neil Gaimam got the rights in a lawsuit and he sold Angela to Disney. She's now Thor's sister.
The fight with Redeemer/Anti-Spawn reminds me of the final duel in Shinobi 3... and all the wall climbing/life sacrificing/needless spike deaths I had to do to get there... still, I have fond memories of that game.
I only own one Spawn comic, but I have watched some analysis videos and dug into the lore... kinda makes me want to learn even more about him. I'll have to see if the local recycling center is had them stashed somewhere.
The best Spawn game, then followed by Demon's Hand on the Dreamcast.
I actually played this game before I knew what Spawn really was. Now that I’ve started reading Spawn, I’m feeling like coming back to it and seeing how my perceptions of it are changed
I have read 303 issues of my boy Spawn and I never beat a game on him. I played the awful Spawn ps1, Spawn armaggeddon which is good with cheats, Spawn snes, Mk11 Spawn
I remember this game being hard af! you make it look easy
Wow just pure nostalgia and yet I never finished that damn game
Ukiyotei, the development team behind Hook and Skyblazer, were behind this too, and it's another overall quality game from a team that was fairly new at the time. (Hook was their first effort) This is probably one of the better comic-based games from the 16-bit era, as it goes to great lengths to feel like the comic. A very hard game, and the controls and attacks can be frustrating at times, but very much worth it.
Skyblazer was one of the best snes games ever made, pretty crazy considering. It's a shame that the quality of games from all the big companies has dropped so drastically, especially Nintendo (I'm not sure they even know that they're a video game company anymore). Luckily the indie game scene is picking up the slack, they're actually making better games than any of the big guys, and they're all super cheap!!! I hope they continue to make quality 2D games, I enjoy 3D games too, but for certain genres like metroidvania you have to go 2D.
Damn this game is bad ass. I would have loved to have had this as a kid. Was a big Spawn fan but didn’t know this game existed at the time. Also, I had a Genesis.
This game was fucking awesome back in the day.
I don't know if it was because I was a kid but man did I suck at this game
No doubt it's a difficult game
Nah man I grinded this game. It is difficult.
its not an easy game i struggle a lot to beat it as a kid
This is my favorite snes game. Spawn is the best
The best Spawn game, tbh.
beat this last year. fun game. awesome graphics
And now this is worth way more than my still bagged copy of Spawn #1...
Wow, seriously? That's nuts, I would've totally expected it to be the other way around. But then again, I guess insane price gouging does tend to be the norm anymore for the any of the old NES and SNES games. I'm glad I did most of my collecting years ago, I'd never be willing to afford some of the awesome stuff I have if I had to buy it at the current prices. I don't do comics, but I'm guessing that that market hasn't quite trended the same?
Well, those initial run of Image comics were SUPER buzzy (and if Spawn the Video Game is worth 10 bucks, it's worth more than that Spawn #1 is). Like, everybody was talking about the creator owned Image comics and how it was going to revolutionize the entire industry. For a while it kind of did, but it was just sort of more of the same, i.e., the same superhero tripe that had been done to death, just under a more modern, edgier coat of paint (super violent characters that kill without remorse and whatnot...SO EDGY), so Image's star faded pretty quickly, but it's remained fairly steady in the industry overall (The Walking Dead is an Image title). I got the first issue of all the initial run comics, Spawn, Cyber Force, Savage Dragon, Youngblood, etc. They're all worth about what I paid for them initially, a few bucks each. By this time I was already getting burned out on superhero stuff myself (this would have been my late teens), and only The Maxx really stood out to me as something completely different (being a big fan of it's creator, Sam Keith, helped a lot, too). I got out of comics entirely just a couple of years later, but I kept most of my collection. Now if I want comics, I'll usually go for a Heavy Metal magazine or something. Something underground or indie.
Dorelaxen if your number one is mint it should be about $60.They printed too many
A great hidden gem!
I remember I beat this game without using a single power. Not to be a try hard but I had no manual and no gamefaqs so I didn’t even know spawn had powers lol. Boy was I salty when I finally saw a let’s play of this and the guy showed off all the moves.
Awesome video bro! I am trying to learn how to make cool videos like this. Woudl luv any suggestions you have 👍👍👍
Damn I unlocked a childhood memory I forgot about
wtf is up with that ending tho
While spawn did save the souls of the kids, he only was able to get back 12. There were 13 kids.
Meaning malbogia still won out.
yea spawn stories rarely have a happy ending.
i played this game when i was in the junior high school
Ahh, the sweet memories
Looks fun
Need a new Spawn game for all consoles. Imagine modern graphics with the spawn suit, cape, and belt.
I haven’t heard this music in over 20 years.
Damn... How did I miss out on this one?
I never got past like the fourth level lol. I need to replay this.
I remember this game pissing me and my friend off back in the day when we were kids.
As a 6 year old Kid, I also had this game on the SNES
So, I have a question. I never understood the numbers on the right side. I know they serve a purpose for this so someone tell me what it means and what will truly happen if it goes to zero? And I don't get the ending...
The short, simple version is Al (Spawn) has a limited amount of let's call it "Hell energy." This lets him use his powers such as blast people with said energy, repair his body, teleport, cure cancer. Pretty much anything.
The big But in the equation is when he runs out he goes straight back to hell, soul and mind lost for good.
The counter represents his remaining energy, and is displayed in the comic.
Left Side=Health Bar
Right Side=Necroplasm Energy
If the player uses up ALL the Necroplasm, game over.
They should have worked on the platforming more elaborately!! Because basically this was trying to be Castlevania symphony of the night before that game was even conceived!!!! Spawn has always been a concept ahead of its time......
Can someone please tell me if that weird “meat” level and “meat” boat boss thing is in the comics?
I met spawn because of this game
Always wanted the game but could never find it up here in Toronto Ontario Canada lol
I haven't heard the soundtrack to this game since I rented it from Blockbuster as a kid. Immediately rekindles a memory.
So... what did Malbolgeia give Spawn at the end?
He reset his power counter to keep him under his service
I definitely threw my controller playing this game.
This game is cool but it seems like 90% of the creativity went into the first couple levels.
I remember this.
The graphics.... Wow they are good for SNES.
Charaters and scence hand drawn from Todd McFlarlane himself. Links into the comic book when Spawn gets stuck with his powers for all of entirinty. The gameplay however is okay at best. Spawn is a little stiff to use and his basic stand up is okay at best.
@3:41 you demolished in 11 seconds a boss that took me hours to beat as a kid lol
Whoah i never seen this one before
I don't understand about the ending, why he said no as he is in pain. Someone tell me so I can know, is his life and power are in a time limit?
My best guess is that Malebolgia used the remaining power from the orb to turn Spawn into a monster instead.
And the numbers are his magic limit... if it hits zero, it's an instant ticket to hell and a game over.
Glad i played and beat this game i think im one of the few people in the whole world who play music from this game in my car on blast such awsome epic drum and bass i never get tired of it.
Anyone can explain the significance of the end?
Oh man, SNES had the best games.
I don't get the ending... What did he 'gift' spawn?
Exactly my question wtf
