- A playthough of Playmates Interactive's 1995 license-based run-and-gun shooter for the Super Nintendo, Mutant Chronicles: Doom Troopers.
Played through on the default difficulty level with Mitch Hunter.
If you aren't familiar with Doom Troopers, you might assume that it was based on a short-lived 90s cartoon, or a line of action figures, but no - it is actually based on a collectible trading card game that was first published in 1995.
So how does one make the leap from cards to a run-and-gun shooter featuring ludicrous amounts of blood? I still have no idea.
Doom Troopers is a Contra-style action game with prerendered CG graphics similar to Donkey Kong Country's. There are eight stages that all revolve around walking to the right while holding the Y button. Inspiring and original are probably not the most apt words to describe it.
In fact, it feels almost exactly like Earthworm Jim, but with the worm lasso, the inspired level design, and the smooth animation ripped out. The stages have some very similar puzzles and set pieces, the gun has the same infuriating limited ammo counter, and you'll have to pull yourself up on ledges that often don't look like climbable ledges.
What really makes this game memorable is how graphic and nasty it can be. You can shoot guys' heads clean off, or you can lift them up and fire into them until they explode. If you see someone hanging from a tree, shoot him to watch the bottom half fall off and splatter when it hits the ground! And that boss that drowns you in bile is a super classy touch.
But besides that, Doom Troopers isn't anything special. It's not a bad game, but it lacks any of the spark of the games that it tries to mimic. Relying on sub-par CG, blaring annoying and loud rock music, and shoehorning run-and-gun mechanics into an Earthworm Jim-modeled engine results in Doom Troopers being a solid, thoroughly mediocre game.
That being said, it is one that can be very entertaining for a short while.

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocomplete.com/) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games! - Hry
Donkey Kong Contra III
😂😂 funny name lol
Warhammer 40-Kong Country
Lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dont you mean Donkey Congtra 3?
Remixed with Earthworm Jim
This is what Gears of War would've been in the early 90's 🤣
Even if it does feel like a poor man's Contra III, Doom Troopers does a fine job of making the nonstop stream of little CG men spray copious amounts of blood. If you like graphic violence in your shooters, you'll certainly find a lot of it here!
Well, there are far better sources: czcams.com/video/GxZrSILng78/video.html
I rented this game so many times from the video store. Really enjoyed it despite it's difficulty. Never beat it though.
This game has always been a core memory for me. My brother was much older than me and ended up showing me this game and it has stuck with me. The soundtrack and the 1st boss are forever stuck in my head.
This game is a videogame adaptation of universe that was at these times the competitor of game Workshop's Warhammer 40.000. There was a war game named Warzone, and a Roleplaying game named Mutant Chronicles. The universe was interesting and really dark.
Were the two Mutant League games from EA part of the same universe, or is it just a coincidental similarity of names and setting?
The lore for this is actually pretty cool. I would suggest anyone give it a read.
I had these models and i was playing doomtrooper in late 90s. I dont get why it died... The lore is like Diablo mixed with Doom. It should have at least one good video game. Raw brutal adult world.
That's pretty impressive, getting through the whole game and only losing one life.
Thanks. It's definitely not easy.
This has to be the most '90s thing ever made
MERCURY looks alot like a stage from Earthworm Jim.
Thanks for sharing this man. I used to play this with my bestfriend when we we're just kids and it is so tough. Even if we we're not able to complete this game, at least I witnessed its complete run through this video. Good thing this was recommended since I totally forgot the title of this game.
Late to the party but I bought a used copy when I was kid that had a code to go to the last level. It was the only reason that I "finished" the game. Otherwise I'd have never beaten it
I bet the creators were like, “We’ll take this trading card game and make a game out of it that makes it look like a spinoff of Doom! The kids will love it!”
And I totally fell for it lol. It ended up being a fun game though, I enjoyed it.
Yep , that was me. Lol
Earthworm Contra?? Also the last boss behaves exactly like Dracula in the original Castlevania.
Hahaha yeah, but Dracula never got that fun dripping sound as his neck spurted.
Totally remember this game haha. Had some late Friday nights with this game as a kid
This needs a remastered
Am I insane or are some of these jungle assets ripped right from Donkey Kong 1? This is weird and deserves a deeper inspection.
I think they were going for the same look, but I dunno if they were ripped off. I mean, the quality of the CG renders in DKC is much better
You have to admit, that's a pretty sick first boss theme for puking skull dude, or whatever his name is
It's Demnogonis, the dark apostle of disease
@@Craudio171 being a little kid didn't know shit about the source of the game. Very later I found this is based on a card game, right?
@@ARIF74 Yes but the name of the puking skull appears in the text before the level begins.
@@Craudio171 By the way I'm Peruvian (Hispanic) so at the time I was a 7 year old kid that didn't know anything of English.
@@ARIF74 Me neither! I'm Brazilian lol
I was wrong again. I thought it has something to do with the Doom series.
8:20 Weirdest attack ever.
one of the best run & gun game
Seeing the game go from Jungle Japes to something clearly inspired by New Junk City while running around like Bill Rizer is... something. I don't know if it's a good something, but something nonetheless.
Love the tracks for Mercury and Pluto from the OST, they just want to make you push forward no matter what
What a bizarre combination of donkey Kong, earthworm Jim and contra.
pretty solid play nice man
I will throw out that there is a movie based on the card game, but I have no idea how accurate it is to the source material. It's got our boy, Mitch Hunter in starring role played by Thomas Jane. It's called just Mutant Chronicles. It's also got Ron Perlman, but most don't like it so it's up to you to decide if you like it.
Where are the bananas and the barrels??? Hey, wait a minute...
I'm crying just remembering
First stage: Donkey Kong country
Pretty killer low-fi action movie score I must say 😆
It was really cool game in my childhood
I remember reading about this game and looking at screen shots in a Gamepro Magazine about this game back in 1995 but never played it at the time afer playing it on an emulator its decent its a mic between earthworm jim and contra
Soundtrack is 🔥
Que juegaso!!!! confieso que pasaron años para acordarme del nombre de este juego un verdadero clasico!!!!!
X2 recién me lo descargue kskskks
Is this how the Doom guy spends his vacation?
Mercury totally looks like Planet Heck from Earthworm Jim
Earthworm Jim Contra crossover
Buzz Lightyear: Beyond Toy Story
Sharp player!!!
Classic game 😎
My friend Joe had this game in middle school and he traded it with me for my copy of Mario is Missing! XD LOL
Suffice to say, it was a good trade on my side. I like this game, it was everything the 90's represented: loud, edgy, CGI Donkey Kong Country-inspired graphics, gratuitous blood inspired by Mortal Kombat, and published by Playmates Interactive, which is the weirdest part of all.
I remember playing this back in the late 90s, i was only 5 though so i didnt ever figure out youre supposed to use bodies to get across the water falls, my dumbass tried jumping in the rocks that were barely visible 😂 now that ive seen the whole game all i can say is wow its short.
OST and gore was the best part of this game sad no sequel
Demnogonis throws up sometimes gross me out.
can anyone tell me How did they make the graphics for this game did they use real actors to make the characters for this game or did they make then digital i mean by computer? Or did they use real toys to make the characters for this game?
When I was a kid I thought this was a spin off to Doom. Lol
Wish this was on the switch
Strike at zero hour,
With overwhelming firepower.
They're fueled by the fear in their enemies eyes.
It's a shock troop infiltration,
A fast and violent escalation,
Out of the planets the Doomtroopers rise!
playing through the genesis version right now, think it might be a bit gorier. The melee enemies also seem way tankier, you have to shoot them quite a few times to kill them.
Significa Tropas Destino.
Eu joguei ele no super Nintendo e no seu emulador pra PS2.
esse jogo é difícil pakas
Warhammer Contra?
Vocês poderiam fazer um filme
Uff q tiempos
vc é profissional mesmo em eu consegui zerar o jogo 2 vezes eu é meu irmão.
There was a secret level tho
Genial
🙂👍

NoA's stance was so inconsistent at the time. Especially from Mortal Kombat II onwards they allowed more violence, but on the other hand you had all the censorship on Earthbound - or was it simply because of its rating, as games like it were pointed to a younger and wider audience?
I recall having played some of this game through emulation many years ago, and while nothing really bad it's very unremarkable, not helped by the graphics - some visual elements are realyl good tbut they are quite inconsistent and haven't aged graciously.
The Sega Version sounds more epic than the SNES.
Final lixo kkk não tem nada.
GENESIS version is better
shitendo seal of approval...
14:39 feminism boss
Genesis version was better IMO.
wow the music in this game is really bad, heavy metal guitar samples that just sounds horrible.
Other than the "music" & bad "samples" it looks ok.
I used to love it, lol.
