  • 1A Auto shows you how to remove a front lower ball joint on a 2002 Chevy S10 Pickup Truck 4x4. This is the same procedure on any 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, and 08 Chevy S-10 Blazer, 1998-04 S-10 Pickup Truck, GMC Jimmy or S15 Sonoma. You can diagnose a bad ball joint by raising the front tire off the ground while supporting the control arm. Then use a pry bar or 2x4 under the tire. Have a person move the tire up and down with the pry bar while you look at the ball joint for side to side motion.

    @midrew1 They are different but the top is usually easier. Support the suspension seperate the ball joint from the steering knuckle then swap it out of the control arm. If it has never been replaced then you will need to grind the rivets off.

    @wtl1964 if it feels loose I would check the tie rod ends and all of the other steering components to see if any of the bushings are worn out.

    You may want to inspect the rotor to see if there's anything touching it. Also check the dust shield to see if it's hitting the brake rotor which would also make a grinding noise. If you can't find the issue try jacking that wheel up off of the ground that's making the noise (turn the truck off, and chock the tires). Then turn the wheel by hand to see if you can here where the noise is coming from. I've have brake pad clips touch the rotor before and make a noise too. Hope this helps you out.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  Před 12 lety

    @screaminlemon Usually what happenes is that you may experiance a popping noise while you sharp turns with the vehicle. If you lift one of the front tires of the vehicle off of the ground and place a pry bar under it, if it easily moves up and down and you can hear it make noise. It would be a good idea to replace them.

    Suggestion: Unless you're highly budget constrained and have lots of time on your hands, Don't waste your time removing the rivets. Go to 1A Auto and purchase an entire upper and/or lower control arms and be done with it. I found this video very helpful when I performed replacement of a ball joint but strongly suggest to save time and a lot of anxiety, buy the complete control arms. Also, do both sides either ball joint or control arm assemblies otherwise you will have alignment problems.

      It will be almost identical. Your axle nut will be secured with a cotter pin and retention cover (so remove the cotter pin & cover) and then hit the axle nut with your impact. Your brakes will be attached with two hex nuts and not (2) 18 mm bolts. The ABS harness will be attached with one of the bolts on the upper ball joint. The torque spec on the axle nut will be higher too.

    What was the black rubber-covered piece? it kinda rivets smaller and smaller as it goes towards the engine, and the rod coming out of it goes up towards the engine. a clear picture of it is all throughout the last part of the video (9:30). Also, I am trying to diagnose a problem with my 96 s10 4x4. whenever i turn the wheel, a loud, obnoxious squeal comes out of somewhere in the right wheel well. I cannot place the sound, but someone told me it might be the ball joint. I am not too sure that that is it, as it kinda sounds like it is coming from the part i described above (but i have no clue what it is :/) any help i can get is very much appreciated.

      Thank you for watching. I believe you are talking about the sway bar and the sway bar end links. The bushings in the end links wear down over time and can cause a noise. The End Link is to the right of the outer tie rod if you pause the video at (9:30) and the end link mounts near the bottom of the shock. If that's the case you can replace the end links and bushings. If you think the noise is from the ball joint you can jack up the front end and check to see if there is play. Please let us know how the repair comes out!

    I have a question about my lower ball joints

    There is alot easier way to do this, that is to just take the whole steering knuckle (spindle) right off the vehicle and leave the wheel bearing still bolted on. Can save alot of time and you dont run the risk of the wheel bearing being wrecked trying to get it to sperate from the spindle.

    Nice.. Remove the entire brakes, use a screwdriver as a prybar, and bend the backing plate..

    "You do not have to remove the wheel bearings for the 4wd vehicles. On the 2wd, the bearings are inside of the rotor/hub combo. You need to remove the rotors to access the ball joint." That seems pretty *important* ... and as per the knuckle? Just not sure is all.

      At this moment, the closest how-to video we have to your request is for this vehicle, which is very similar to the one you have. The steps may not be 100% the same, but should contain an adequate amount of information necessary for accomplishing this task: +Carl Rivest
