Hi Willie, the look of that Abu Matic reminded me of a Cadillac, while a Zebco reminds me of a Pinto. 😊 It looks so amazingly gorgeous for a reel. Not to mention the sharp looking case it came in. Spiffy! I can't wait to see it in action. What will be the differences there? My goodness, it has so many more pieces, than any other I've seen you take apart. Hey there! I was a bit on edge when I realized that camera had cut off, 🫣. Fortunately I figured it out on the first and a half time, 😄. Just dig into that 270.. I’m sure there’s a schematic out there and as long as you have all the parts, you can get it back together at some point.. 😂
I have an abumatic 136 and a 150 They are basically the same except the 150 has an oscillating spool These reels are excellent and the quality is just not seen in modern spincasters They are definitely complicated and requires patience The good thing is that when you take one apart you can do any of them because they are so similar Enjoy your reel It's a Beauty It should last forever if taken care of
At this point I have two 120’s, a 170, a 275U, and this 60.. And at this point I have to say, the work horse of the group is definitely the 170.. The 60 is the smoothest of the group, the 120 is the most unique of the group, and the 275U is…🤔… the most “under spin” of the group😂. There’s a bit more parts in the Abumatics but they definitely perform differently than the rest.. I’ll be looking for more.. definitely.. Thanks for watching!! Willie

The main reason I had no use for the 60 is I left hand retrieve. Many Johnson's operate the same way and the same story. So I might as well pass it on to someone that will use it.

But now that you "have a general idea of what you are doing" if I ever happen to get an Abu-40 or 60, etc. guess where I will be sending it for servicing. (haha) What line did you end up using on it? Very well done! I'm in Scandinavia, and over here "spincast" is practically synonymous with Abumatic. It would be difficult to find a Johnson, a Shakespeare or even a Zebco spincast reel around here. If it's not ABU, it's Fladen reels, yet another Swedish company.

I also have several 4000 series Ambassaduers and just recently picked up a Ambassaduer 1000. I wish the Abumatics were as easy to find here as they are in Scandinavia. They are extremely well made. But I love the Abumatics.. at least the ones I have anyway. The first bait caster I ever used and learned on as well, was an Ambassaduer 4600.. I still have several. My first Abumatic was a 120.. very unique reel and fun to use. I would have to say, the 170 has been the most dependable where the 60 seems more elegant.. I love them all.. please don’t buy anything on my account.. eventually I’ll bump into something at the markets or antique stores. Thanks once again!! Willie

Like a fine watch!! It’s got a lot of parts but an extremely well thought out reel.. has the same issue with the line getting stuck after a fish is caught but I recently “hand wound” new line on it and it’s been a ton better about it.. I’ll keep those clips in mind!! Thanks 😊
Its the opposite here in Sweden, Abu and Abu garcia every where. I find a Johnsson sidewinder ( mod22) Wonder what the heck is this.. 😂 I got to have it! And now i have, most try it. But would be interessting more history about the Johnsson reel. As a Swede i have to admit Penn i knew about, but other. Anyway god channel i love nerding down in old reels, its also a industrialismen history.
Hello there🤠 and Just for the record, the Johnson model 80 sidewinder is the best one😂😉.. just sayin’ I love the Abumatic series reels. The 170 is my favorite but it’s definitely a rare find here. An Abumatic of any kind is hard to find.. I recently found an Ambassadeur 1000 bait caster which is just an incredible find.. I took it apart, cleaned it up, some oil, a little grease and I still stink trying to cast it.. 😂 but it’s a VERY nice reel!! I love these old reels and it’s always exciting to come across one in an old shop.. Thanks for watching!! Willie
I like working on reels especially spincast but never take them down that far or id be in panic mode putting it back. I use cotton swaps , can air and such cleaning them up. I did strip down a baitcaster recently it about did me in .
I understand.. I just look at how much I spent on it and weight how worried I am that it won’t get back together correctly. 😄 The majority of these reels are all very much the same or at least have some of the same mechanisms.. with some of that companies (whatever company it may be) own little designs thrown in. I like them to all be as clean as I can get them and even cleaner than they may have been new. Most of the Johnson’s, Zebcos, and Shakespeares are overly complicated. Abu Garcia?? Different story.. but you can’t take away how good they work with all that extra stuff inside.. I’ll be looking for more.. Thanks for watching!! Willie🤠
Honestly, I’m not sure what the largest line it can handle is. For me, I would NEVER go any larger than 8lb.. but that’s just me.. Comparing the Abumatic to a Zebco is kinda like comparing a Timex to a Rolex..lol.. 😂.. The only thing they have in common would be that they are both in categories of their own.. In the beginning, Zebco was designed to be inexpensive yet functional.. Where Abu Garcia from the beginning was all about luxury, tight tolerances, and top materials.. basically two different ends of the fishing reel spectrums..

Abumatic 60 is the first (-57) of a lot of other modells by abu.
Abu wasn't Abu garcia back then they merge whit garcia mid - 80.
