    This story is as much about you as the characters within. It is a journey through all the aspects of your identity, but writ large, on a cosmic scale. It is the Tree of Life and the map of your own life, all in one.
    Welcome to the Angelarium.

    Making this video was a really incredible experience. A huge thanks to the artist behind Angelarium, Peter Mohrbacher, for helping us with the thumbnail! I hope you all enjoy this strange, experimental narrative experience, it really isn't like many of the topics we've covered in the past.
    We also made an entire SECOND video about Angelarium too, which we posted over on Nebula! To watch it, pick up the CuriosityStream/Nebula bundle deal, which you get cheaper than any other streaming service right here: curiositystream.com/talefoundry
    Thanks everyone so much for watching, it really means a lot that we can cover these bizarre topics and you're all here for it.

      I adore the art and writing of peter mohrbacher, he has such a surreal yet distinct take on various aspects of Jewish Mythology. Speaking of which, is there any plans to cover Jewish folklore in some regard similar to how you covered Slavic and Celtic mythology? There is an absolute breadbasket of stories both unique and familiar and I think they are often looked over due to christian normative perspectives believing them to just be the stories from the bible, etc. Thanks for the lovely video as always!

      Hmm, I haven't seen the video yet and I haven't read Angelarium either, but I *do* love angelic eldritch horror. You remember Wheels? I mean that one drawing of the Thrones angel. I really did love it. Not because it was comforting, but because it was really really cool. An incomprehensible servant of your God, monstrous and uncaring. Blinding in its light and form. What do others of its kind look like? Why was it made to be as it was? Brightness can be comforting, but it can be harsh like staring into the sun. Unlike traditional eldritch horror with slimy, grimy, dark creatures, this one was the opposite.
      Angelic horror is really a favourite of mine. Maybe I'll like Angelarium too

    I found the Angelarium a few years ago myself. Fell in love with the paintings and then discovered the story. Finding the beauty in knowing that you can't, and don't need to, understand everything. That comprehending the divine is largely not important, however unavoidable. I've heard it described as 'the opposite of Lovecraft' and I think that's fitting. The universe is beyond us, but we're still a part of it. And that's inherently beautiful.

The Masoric text, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Pentateuch (the Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament used by many Jews in the Greek period) are used regularly. And we can't forget about the hundreds of other complete and partial manuscripts that exist and are not used simply because there aren't enough differences between them to make it worth it to compare.

      Metatron was one of the first angels, created to be the link between mankind and the divine. In Talmud and Targum, Metatron has an earthly incarnation as Enoch. Upon Enoch’s death and arrival in Heaven, (whilst still human), he was transformed into a spirit of fire, with 36 pairs of wings and innumerable eyes. I have a cool picture of him on the back of my Mars Volta hoody. Metatron is the tallest angel in Heaven. His height is said to equal the breadth of the whole earth. According to Eisenmenger, God gives to Metatron the names of all the souls to be taken, each day. Metatron gives these names to Gabriel and Samael, who then go and do the job of actually collecting those souls. It is said Metatron was the one who stayed Abraham’s hand at the point of Isaac’s sacrifice. He is also said to have lead the Israelites through the wilderness after their Exodus from Egypt. Metatron was the first to announce that God was planning to destroy the Earth by flood.

    • @danielsmithiv1279
      @danielsmithiv1279 Před 2 lety +9

      That's because true spirituality isn't religious. God was never about religion. However, most people will fail to understand this.
      In the beginning, when the Lord created Adam and Eve, he said, "Be fruitful, multiply, and replenish the earth and subdue it..."
      He told them to have dominion over the earth. When God made mankind, He didn't give them a religion. He gave them an ethereal Kingdom.
      God doesn't seek the religious. He searches for those who are willing to worship Him in spirit and truth. He wants those to come back into His holy kingdom -- not a religious institution or organization.
      Again, most people will fail to comprehend this.

    As interesting as this was, my personal worldview is effectively fundamentally incompatible with works like this as well as Cosmic Horror. I do not see fear in that which I don't understand, nor acceptance. I only see opportunity. I do like finding things that I don't understand, not just because they can be inherently beautiful, but because they offer an opportunity to gain understanding of something new. To say that something is "unknowable" or "beyond understanding" to me simply means that there are layers of abstraction between what I already know, and that which is in front of me, and that it should be able to hold my attention for quite a while.

      Mohrbacher's made literally millions of dollars owning and controlling Angelarium over the last decade plus whereas if he kept doing work for WOTC, each MtG painting's worth a decent standard of living for someone without kids (he has two) that you only get paid for once. People really think they need the clout of working with some big established brand, but it's really just a joke. See also Brandon Sanderson's record breaking Kickstarter that should make a bunch of the big publishers nervous.

    • @Schadrach42
      @Schadrach42 Před 2 lety +2

      Another to take lots of influence from Kabbalah, although in a completely different direction, is UNSONG by Scott Alexander.
      Short description of the premise is that the early NASA program accidentally broke the sky, and now the laws of physics are slowly decaying and there are angels, demons and magic running around. There are two forms of magic humans can use - one functions by speaking divine Names that do various things and the other is essentially putting on a show and convincing the universe that what you are doing is magical and should yield the result you want.
      One very noteworthy thing is that UNSONG is an absolute masterclass of foreshadowing upon foreshadowing, most of which is incomprehensible without considering the approach the characters in the setting take to things like language, gematria, nominative determinism, etc. Once you are looking at the text through the right lens, however, you end up realizing things like the 4th sentence of Chapter 1 "My name is Aaron Smith-Teller and I am 22 years old." foreshadow both the arc Aaron's plot follows and how the story ends.

    This whole tale tickles at my intuition and my love of myths. At first blush, this feels like it could be a tale of the divine becoming material, of an immortal soul descending the Tree of Life into a state of mortality, of living and of dying, and yet remaining a reflection of its divine origin. Or perhaps the reverse could be just as true? Perhaps the divine is rooted in the material, an emanation of the universe the same as we? Are we a reflection of the divine, or is the divine a reflection of ourselves?
    I must read this book. I may not fully understand it, that may not be its intended purpose, but it will likely give me much to contemplate. Thank you for the introduction.
