I did Operation Intrinsic Action '95 with 1st Cav. Everything he is saying is true. I was Four Deuce and we fired the only creeping barrage in my 20 year career. We shot over 700 rounds out of 6 guns. Old school Four Deuce platoons were built Different. We did have an Master Sergeant as the Platoon Sergeant. At any given time we had 4-6 E-5's, 2 E-6 and 2 E-7's the PL was usually a Lt moved over from one of the line Companies waiting on an opening in an S shop or XO's position. Man this one brings back alot of memories.

I'm a black Latino from South Florida I should have known how to swim when I tried out for the 20th Special Forces Group in 1994, I think I was 21. I failed the swim test and retested 6 months later after I learned how to swim. In SF you have to swim with gear on so you have to be a good swimmer. I later went to the 82nd where one of my platoon buddies was going to try out for Ranger School. Also, a black guy, he couldn't swim. I offered to teach him since I did it with SF, but he never went to Ranger School as far as I know.

My two cents: even if one is 'only' a civilian, one should learn to swim.
Especially if you live near bodies of water, particularly rivers. They may be as treacherous as large surf.
And preferably, you can swim in clothing, and in the cold, and at least 1km.
Because when you really need this skill, it may be less than ideal circumstances...

I knew MSG Vansant when I was reassigned to rear D in 2/82 AVN in 2010. Head injury in Afghanistan caused a seizure disorder and a number of other things that I still deal with today. It is what it is, but MSG Vansant seemed like a really great guy. Genuine person, though I tried to stay off the leadership's bad side. To be honest, he just seemed like someone that you would prefer to stay on their good side. I doubt he remembers me, but after all that could be looked at as a good thing. That means I didn't do anything stupid enough to get remembered by.

When I was in Navy boot camp we had over 30 black guys in our division. Not a single one passed the swim qual the first time. I could understand joining the army not knowing how to swim can’t imagine joining the navy not knowing how to swim. Blew my mind.

former Marine here. saw the same thing in bootcamp. most barely passed the lowest qual level. higher body density coupled with environmental factors growing up made it rough. the drown rate would've been horrendous for black troops in ww2 during ambit assaults had the marines been fully integrated back then.

Being a leader, military or civilian, is not about bossing people around. It's about getting them to accomplish things that are beneficial to the group and lead to pride in their accomplishments. In the military I never asked my guys to do something I wouldn't do. If they had to stay late I was there with them. Not in the way if I could help it, just letting them know they weren't being fucked with. Many times after a late shift working on equipment beer was provided for those that wanted it at my expense. That was how I was taught. It was the older days mid 80s to early 2000s so I don't know how it works today. It's about treating people with respect, and helping them work through personal problems that as an older NCO you know how to work through it and provide guidance. Can't help with that Comero you bought a 28% interest, but just kindness and respect.

My uncle George who was born in South West Philly, around 1942, was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1960 or so often told the story how every time he was made to jump into a pool ( I believe with full battle gear on ) he sank right to the bottom and would loose consciousness. He would be fished out and given a passing grade for that phase of the qualification. I believe this happened at least three times during his time of service. He told me that he would always warn the D.I. that the closest he had ever been to a body of water when growing up was when the Fire Department came around and opened up hydrants so the neighborhood kids could stay cool during the long hot Philly summers. Uncle George is white, like this man in the video said it all had to do with where the recruits grew up and not because of their race. By the way, when my mom ( his sister) married and moved to the suburbs she made sure me and my siblings learned to swim by the time we were about 5 years old. My swimming abilities served me well later in life when I became a water rescue/diver Paramedic.

for clarification and substance it boils down to aspiration. 99% of the regiment is guys from the country, SE to be exact, when they added E company to the regiment (non combat arms / support) turned out 55% of E companies are black. truth of the matter of it. 13% of the country is black which means everything should mirror that, however 20% of the army is black, but around 8% is combat arms. and drastically decreases when you move up the pipeline, of that 8% only 13% is infantry, and drastically reduces for each tab you chase including, air assault, airborne and up
also combat arms makes up only 35% of the army to begin with 10% of that is infantry.
