- In this little experiment we're going to isolate the PS4's fan and listen in to see just how loudly it operates under certain operations. While not a scientific video, you can certainly get an idea for how loud the machine gets once you see one for yourself. Where headphones if you really want to hear it best!

I play the witcher and it's as quiet as any other game but then again i just cleaned my fan from the inside.

Thats because of dirty inside the console, i dissbamble it and clean it all, and the sound has decrease a lot. Tried that guys

The loudest part of the console is its disc drive. 1 The disc drive id recommend buying all games digital and watch Blu Rays and DVDs on a different player if you don't like the noise. 2 The next loudest part is the fan now the fan alternates from high to low depends on what game you are playing or how hot the console is at the moment. To minimize the fan noise don't use the disc drive discs have to spin and it can cause some heat. Also try placing your console in an open space were there's enough ventilation so the fan dosnt have to do all the work to keep it cool. 3 The last loudest part is the HDD. You can buy an SSD to eliminate all the noise from the HDD or find a HDD that is quiet try Western Digital there pretty quiet. Hope this helps guys.
I was a bit concerned when my PS4 made that sound when you first insert the a disk in. Glad it happens for every other PS4 :D

In the myst of the negative comments and videos of both console releases. You have got to be the only one (there are others) with positive videos of your experience with the ps4! I have one and mine performs just as yours. I had mine running for about 11-13hours one day. From games to movies this console didn't skip a beat and or made a noise. Most of the time, if not all the time, I can't hear the fans. The ps4 system reminds me of my Lexus, it's nice and quiet with a luxurious design!

This is so nice to hear. I have the old ps3 that launched with 80 gigs and has the ability to play ps2 games. I love my system but man it gets so loud and hot. In the winter I used it as a heater sometimes lol, and normally people assume it's an external fan because my mic picks it up so I'm glad to hear how quiet this is.

I like the PS4 design, its reminds me of PS2 and the blue/white light on the side looks really cool.
For the disc game when playing at 1080p the fan will spin up to 90% fan speed and cool the system down, but then after 30 seconds, it will go back down to 75% fan speed, then 50% and hover around there.
I only noticed it when it first spun up during BF4 or KZ.
I would think it would be high if you have a very hot room (heater up).
when you first get the ps4 its as quiet as an angel but when dust builds up and does not get cleaned the ps4 becomes a jet engine until you clean it
Sounds the same as my ps4! Im happy I dont play digital (other than the free games of the month for ps+) but other than that its quite smooth, one thing to note, when inserting the disk and starting it, it is quite loud but when you get into the game it is not as loud and almost silent. It gets pretty loud after about an hour or two of playing games. Fan starts to kinda tick. Generally I find it much louder than PS3 unfortunately.

***** Louder doesn't mean it is better. 80mm PC fans are loud and don't cool as well as 120mm fans.

Since the PS4 using newer, more efficient hardware it should run cooler. But since it is AMD hardware, that's not how it works.
i dont think it matters anyway because every time we play theres gonna be sounds coming from the speakers, explosions, car acceleration etc so that noise wouldnt be heard anyway unless maybe its on standby which isnt a problem. Overall great console

I think the loud noises are common in all 3 PS4's. I say that because I had concerns when my pro sounded like a jet when I was playing God of war 2018 & uncharted 4. I found out that it's just the fans that kick in when the system is getting too hot and it goes quiet again after awhile.
After having an xbox 360 for 7+ years I was sooo surprised by how quiet the ps4 is.... Im very happy that I no longer have a loud fan killing the atmosphere when I watch movies now....
yh the old xbox 360 was pretty loud. the xbox 360 slim wasnt loud though but was loud if you didnt install the game to hard drive

david david yh and it was quite noticeable on the older generation of consoles. on the xbox one it seems to be seriously quiet maybe slightly more quiet then my ps4. guessing its due to games now being installed on the hard drive where it wasnt on the xbox 360 unless you did it manually

if you have any cd inside the ps4 try cleaning it until it doesn’t have any marks then put it back.
if this doesn’t work you should clean your ps4 and replace thermal paste
Good vid but I have a question. The last test where you say the sound of the fan changes from playing a game to watching Netflix. How do you know it was the fan that changed? Perhaps just the fact that there is no disc spinning any more made it quieter for watching Netflix?

I just got my ps4. I couldn't even tell it was on other than the light bar on the system and I never hear any changes in sound also no matter what I am doing. Great piece of equipment.
I own a PS4, and Its Amazing, especially the new vioce commands
The XO definitely has a quiter fan even normally and doesn't need to speed up, I had it on for 9 hours at most and it only feels warm, but when you insert a disc on the xbox one it sounds like you're throwing plastic down a garbage disposal for about 40 seconds. Mine might be broken, but I don't think it is, it still works. And with the whole fan thing I just talked about, well of course the PS4 is going to get warmer, it's small. I'm still shocked and amazed at how much power they put into the PS4 in that tiny space with out heating issues.
it has major heating issues i sent mine in, if my new ps4 still is loud and gets hot after 20 minutes i cant believe i will say this buy i might get a xbone... :(
In my opinion the noise that comes from the disc drive spinning up is louder than the noise that ever comes from the fans in my experience so far.

The power brick should have been outside, but with ventilation where the heat can somehow leave your room slightly is enough to keep it dead quite. The CD is loud at the beginning as it slowly installs the game I think.

This video is great, but I was wondering if you can take a quick video of the ps4 from the right side right next to the intake port, and also on the back side. (just when playing a game for an hour or so and have the fan running pretty good) I have a video of mine up on my page and it seems louder :/
mine does the same thing. I noticed the fan's noise gradually went up to a certain level when I was playing Watch Dogs for 5 hours.
Hi thanks for you video. I wanted to Chek out someone else's ps4 sounds because wend I play destiny it make no fan noise but with farcry and first light digital it makes fan noise. Though it was a broken ps4 and I had it for one 1 month now. Now that I see this video it bring my worries down thanks man.
Noises will be noticeable when putting in a disc or starting sonething but that just normal and also you will hear the fan sometimes because if you havent got it positioned properly so air can enter the system the fans will work harder to keep the system cool. I advise having your windows open. I keep my room cold all the time as I hate heat

i have been seeing lots of how to clean your ps4 vids. My ps4 does make similar sound like yours but not much. i brought it in may 2015 just do the regular cloth cleaning after every session. Should i break the seal and open it up for cleaning?

I cleaned mine out and replaced the thermal paste, and it stays fairly quiet. I can still hear the fan but its not horrible.

Quick qeustion. When playing Shadow Fall for 4 hours did you actually load a level so it had to render and process something or was it just running in the main menu?
Leaving a game in it's main menu doesn't stress the system I mean.

Its actually quite loud not much of an issue but it is louder than xbox1 id compare it to the wii u so if youve got a wii u people its as loud as that.
Little tip buy a ps4 stand so you stand the ps4 up so the heat at the bottom of the console can get out easier and the air will cool it down

does anyone here remember just how loud the dreamcast laser disk reader was? on loading screens is was particularly loud and it over powered the tv if you didn't have the volume up too loud.

Wait so when you start up your ps4 for the first part of the video it doesn't make the same noise as mine does, mine makes the same noise yours does when you put the disc in at 2:15. like a gear shifting noise. So I guess mine makes that sound at 2:15 when I frist start it up because I already have the disc in there?

It should be fine. It sounds like the stepless fan working more then anything else. If the game requires a lot of resources, and the unit gets warm, the fan will increase accordingly.
Mystic what is was trying to say was that my fans get as loud as "Playing disc game. 4 hours in." when playing 15 minutes of Battlefield or Tomb Raider or Resogun. it stays loud like that for maybe 3 mins, then it's pretty silent for the next 3 mins, and then loud again. It goes like that all the time. It gets pretty hot but not overheatingly hot. Should I be worried?
Well like I said, every situation is different. The stepless fan should adjust when needed. If there was anything truly wrong with your unit, then a greater problem should occur. At the end of the day, if you are sure it's an issue, return it for a new one.

The game is stressing your system being graphically intensive. As long as Sony makes an adequate cooling system, then you should be find.

Hey the PS4 I just got today, when playing digital version of Far Cry 4, it's quiet for awhile then gets steadily louder until it's kinda loud but not horribly so, then quiets down again after a few seconds. Repeats this pattern. And while loud if I go into a menu it immediately goes quiet. Just wondering how normal this is and if I should be worried at all
The PS4 ramps up with it's fan when a lot of stuff is happening on screen, when you go into the menu it slows down because it's not rendering much. :)
i think its amazing the ps4 is as quiet as it is compare it to the original classic xbox or original ps3.
I'm happy the XBOX ONE is super quiet, and the disc don't spin. So noway the XBOX ONE disc can get damaged or scratched; unless you drop it or something.
just saying this isn't quite an accurate test for viewers cause well there is an adjustable video volume and an adjustable computer/speaker volume

guys dont change from ps4 to xbox just because of noise, look at the bottom of the console, remove stickers, take of the bolts, clean the fan with compressed air, return the cover, put the bolts in, turn it on and see the deference
