- Hey people! In this video I cover 10 things that people don’t tend to know about Royal Marines training. It is somewhat shrouded in secrecy so I think it’s fitting to pull back the curtain every now and again.

Crawled through mud all day long in horrendous weather. Spent hours washing all my kit, inspection at seven in morning sharp! Went bed...three in morning they rush in and throw all our kit out the window onto muddy ground! Spent rest of sleep time until 7 trying to wash and dry it all. Some still damp...more crawling through mud as a punishment. Yeah it's great! Utter exhaustion is every single day.
Sounds lovely mate
I did this over 30 years ago, and nothing has changed. The Bottom Line, as you say, is a Mindset. If you want it badly enough....
Love that mate, totally agree
hardest part by far in my opinion was the lack of sleep which creates a vicious cycle, specially in phase 1. Tired troop = poor performance in gym/field = more thrashings = tired troop. Its a merry-go-round of camp circuits and getting your mess tin launched into trees
Great presentation. 👍
Always planned on joining the Royal Marines but the parents moved us to America and end up joining the Marine Corps
Semper Fi mate! I met a few Leathernecks at the US Embassy in Hong Kong when we stopped on way to Tokyo for British Week in 1970..Still got the USMC cuff links& tie pin that I gave a Corps belt for! I did my 9 years with 42 Recce mostly then left to be a copper at Exeter..did 5 years then emigrated to be a Canadian cop…now retired near Alicante in Spain!
Myth number 11 Not every Bootneck looks as buff as Harry. This 9.5 stone weakling flew through training in the top 5 for the troop. It's a state of mind!
Muscle Bosuns always struggled in the field: carb deprived diet, load carrying/running (already overloaded with unnecessary muscle) Being of average build is adequate, I actually put a stone on in training. Image does not make a Royal Marine. The '80's were a diverse mix from skinny racing snakes or barrel chested Oxes but all were mega fit with our unique Bootneck Esprit De Corps and attitude.
My son has done a degree with The Royal Marines whilst working as a PTI, along with others this year. So the day you start training is the day you prepare to leave the Corps. Don't flail around until you have done eighteen years and think what am I going to do in civvy street. Cause civvy street doesn't care about your beret.
PTI's have way too much spare time on their hands.
@@flissbomb2580 Wow are you for real! Risk assessments, training programs, gym maintenance. Qualifications in every sport. Soccer to artic sports. Health of the students. Remedial training.I have just touched a few. I wonder why you have that opinion?
@@mairiconnell6282 😂 I can't ever remember having conversations with my parents about training programmes and risk assessments. The weekends must fly by🤣
Solid advice there , Mairi. One foot out he door if it goes breasts heavenward, is the way forward. Civpop don`t care how many tours you`ve done.
... Hahaha.. I agree hehe.. Same as training corporals.... They did nothing all day too.... Lazy overweight and moaned alot 😅😅😅😂
Mind over Matter! They don't because you don't matter. But seriously, it is about conditioning you mentally and physically to achieve the objective given including taking life and dealing with friends as casualties or worse. Train hard, fight easy! (Easier) Good luck and fortitude to those that go through commando training!
Very professionally presented Harry!
you call it a thrashing, the paras call it a bee sting or beasting strange terminoligy from where I come from Canada we would call it being put though the ringer is more like it! And I have a book where a canadian went though your training and got your green beret it called wearing the green beret by Jake Olafsen.
Seems like Ranger school rules to me. Good to know it works the same/similar way all the world around. "Are you hurt or injured!?" RLTW! 💪
First shoot is week 6/7 on the 25 metre range
So he is wrong then you’re saying ?
Thanks for the full video 🙏 Clearly going to be purchasing a rope soon.
Love that mate
Don't waste your money on a rope. You'll climb plenty in training
Propaganda !
Went through Lympston in 1987, still have nightmares 😂😂
haha don't we all
No. 1 - "It pays to be a winner" - you'll hear this time and time again, hopefully though a member of the training team saying this to someone else... not you
No. 2 - Not a myth, an expectation - I remember drawing my SLR from the Armoury for the 1st time thinking I was about to hit the range with live ammo, I was so disappointed to be doing rifle drills 😄
No. 3 - Never come across this particular example although we did do a load carry into the field once in minus temperatures and were told we were going into 'heated accommodation' - Was actually a shit brick building and back then we weren't issued roll mats (back in the days of 58 webbing) so you can imagine how crap it was sleeping on a concrete floor in just your slug. Plenty of speed marches were over the distance, we were told where the finish line was but the PTI didn't break the troop into quick march... just carried on going for another half mile to test your mental resilience
No. 4 - Bottom field (or RMR unit) ropes complete with boot polish engrained in is the issue, far harder than the gym ropes done wearing trainers as you can't get the same grip with your hands, knees & boots
No. 5 - True, but this is where you develop a 'buddy' system with your mates so you look after cleaning his rifle and he does some of your ironing etc.
No. 6 - Folding 'Hospital Corners'... 😬Nods now have duvets ? Easy life
No. 7 - Lectures before Phys were always the worst as you knew a thrashing was imminent
No. 8 - In the RMR this was dogshit, do all your Commando tests, get your green lid on completion of your 30 miler... annnnnddddd "Endex" - back on the coach home - No fanfare, no parade in Blues, no families gushing and proud of your achievements - just turn up as a trained rank on your next drill night - Chad Valley for all the work you have put in and commitments made
No. 9 - Must be new this? Nothing I learned however was transferable elsewhere, apart from resilience to cold and honking weather?
No. 10 - Yep, goes back to point 1 - "It pays to be a winner" - No Nod is 'un-thrashable' but it is a morale booster when an oppo is laughing as you are getting thrashed. Bear in mind though there is always one absolute c0ck in every training team who because they thought their training was harsh, your training should be as well and is always the one who picks everyone up on inspections for the slightest thing - That is life as a Nod
Were you on a training team? If so when and who else was on the team?
What sort of essays do they make you write and how long do they have to be?
I’m a U.S Marine I’m Mexican American and I wanna join this the nationality thing is the only thing holding me back what could I do to get in
What year did 'beastings' become 'thrashings'?
Are Alison courses recognized
Solid
thanks mate
When I was at Lympstone "solid" meant "retarded".😄😄
Went through training and did 16 years. Not once was a beasting called a thrashing. It’s all in the mind
Was wondering the same thing about "thrashings".
Do they still have the 2 week beasting?
Should have paid attention in the Corps values lecture
Hi mate, thanks for the info.
What SQ did you do and did you enjoy it?
I was armoured support and it was a mixed bag haha
I thought they said not to practice ropes before you join as they do it a certain way ?
Running, press ups, sit ups and pull ups until your eyes bleed is the only physical preparation you'll need.
Sorry what do you mean by the thrashing you around part?
It’s a word for punishment
Corrective military training in the form of physical exercise. 😂
If you are wondering how hard RM training is, it`s way harder than can imagine. I mean, fucksake , imagine you just want to get through the next month, or week, or day, there will be times when getting through the next ten seconds will seem impossible. If you don`t think this life is for you, if you do not feel you are up to it, have you considered joining Para Reg?
Hi harry, im hopefully going into BT in 7 months or so, what is the average 1.5 mile time people got at the start just so i can get an understanding, im currently at 9:52 but obviously i still have a while till i join yet hoping i can get to low 9:00s
Hi mate, sub 9 mins is a great aim, I have a running program that’ll drive this straight down linked below
Hsfitness.org/shop
Average 1.5 mile time on PRMC is around 9:30 - 10:00, you won't have slept well and starting in a chaotic pack is awkward. Personally I was running sub 8 minutes every time when preparing but ran around 8:30 on PRMC and came first.
As a trained rank I was running around 9 minutes (in boots) which was usually in the top quarter in the troop.
The biggest mistake guys make is not thinking about preserving their body and avoiding injury, lots of PRMC candidates sprain ankles at the start of the 1.5 miler, throughout training it's always best to go slightly slower and reduce the risk of injury
Hi, i was wondering if it was possible to join the marines after lasik surgery
Hi mate, best way to know is to ring the careers office
Yes mate you can, spoke to the careers office said it’s fine as long as you allow for the recovery time, got my interview wednesday n my LASEK surgery on the 31st this month 👍
You will learn to eat as fast as lightning and fall asleep at the drop of a hat. Im 62 and still do exactly that 😂
If I was 18 again, I'd not arse around with cars and stuff. I try out for the Royal Marines, just to prove I could do it. At 28 I could run in their threshold to pass the initial Commando tests. Shame I'm 48 now.
I'm 31 and it's probably my last chance. I have to know.
How long does a thrashing last?
Anywhere from 30 min to 2 hour
@@Harryshepfitness I was half expecting you to reply “how long is a piece of strong?” 😅
As long as it takes to exhaust you.
Harry what Unit did you serve with?
43 cod
@@Harryshepfitness Which Squadron?
@@Katmando376pretty sure the marines don’t have squadrons
@@d1nrup As of 2016, 43 Commando Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines has over 550 personnel and is organised into several sub-units:[19]
HQ headquarters squadron
O Rifle Squadron[19]
P Rifle Squadron (reformed in 2018)[19][20]
R Rifle Squadron[19]
I'm 17 and working full time as a labourer atm and I want to go into the Royal Marines, would it be worth going and re doing my maths gcse as it was the only one I failed, just so I don't have to deal with the "functional skills " In basic
im doing my GCSEs this year but I already did my maths exam and got an 8, I'm hoping to become a marine in the future. I'm not entirely sure on whether you should redo maths but I just wanted to say if you do goodluck and I hope to see you in the marines one day 🙏
I was a RM instructor years ago. My advice; do it. Any academic learning you have will help make you a better Marine. You must be able to read, write and count. It sounds pedantic but if the troop is 55 men and the sergeant says, "Oi you, each man needs 150 rounds. How many mags is that and how many rounds in total?" You need to be able to answer correctly. It will also help with the million and one other far more complicated questions you will get asked.
@@keithwalker9003 Thanks so much sir, I'm fairly decent at school (doing my GCSEs this year but averaging 8s and 9s in mocks), so that shouldn't be a problem. I've always wanted to be a marine, seems very challenging and interesting. Another question, I'm not a british citizen yet (portuguese), but if I got a british passport would I be able to join? Only reason I don't join the portuguese marines is that it is not as prestigious and challenging as the RM. Thanks for your time
@@marty5883You have to be a British National of part of the common wealth, im not sure about passports.
@@volant917 oh damn, i thought if i just got british citizenship it would work. thanks
Can confirm 135 troop
Thanks mate
If they told you before, you may not want to sign up, mate 😂😂
7:49 how long did u train proir to training???
A while if I’m honest mate - but with a good program you could get there in 6 months
Does everyone have this hairstyle?
Did you complete training?
He never answered you . Clearly the guy is getting off on showing his muscles and talking utter bollox . What a toilet . His arrogance is astounding
@@Beanbag777- did he bang your sister or something? Is that why you're so grumpy?
3 months before you live fire a weapon.... Really? 1972 we were firing within a month at most when training was longer. 32 weeks having three months before you live fire?

Can Foreigners join
No
@@A2-sttt yes . They have Irish
Irish, Canadians, South Africans, Aussies, Fijians, Jamaicans, Barbados, St Lucia, Guyana,.....probably a few others.
Would you be happy serving with females should any get on the course and pass it ?
As long as standards stay the same yes
Leave it out
He's not serving any more. He did minimum time and left
Not a problem we'll ever have to face.
@@corporal747 Is this a criticism.. ?? is it not OK to do the time you serve up for and then leave... ??
4:58 Rifle barrel in the shit 🤬
Seriously, this video and certain comments beggars belief
Do you remember when you left the Marines after doing zero tours to be successful and it's all gone tits up
Doing an operational tour has zero to do with how you move on from the military. The training, discipline etc will set you up for life as long as your willing. Don’t play the victim card and crack on.

Thrashings? You mean "beastings"......
An admin thrashing?? 😂
Many moons ago when I was a Recruit Troop Corporal at CTCRM we used to do 'The Washing Machine' punishment.
The whole Troop would fill their Seaman's kitbag with everything (less their Lovat trousers and wool jumpers), go up to the top floor of the block, empty it all out over the balcony into one big pile where we'd then fire hose it and make them kick it around like it was in a washing machine. Once it was nicely messed up we'd call a locker inspection in 5hrs.
For lads who were already exhausted it was the final straw and we had far more PVRs after that than all the Bottom Field beastings put together!
That's an "Admin Thrash".
@@JammyDodger45 Scary stuff 😳😅
Harry -- What I don't understand is the beastings. Train hard, yes! Work hard on exercise. Yes! But beastings just to cause pain doesn't make sense. Beastings will not make you a better sniper, or a better runner. Too many beastings will make men resent you , and if you are an Officer on Active Service, increase the probability you succumb to an "own bullet." If you are an Officer and you have little respect for your men, why should they respect you? Another thing which gets to me is why Marines are not allowed to sleep in PJs in camp or their boxers. I hate to see other men's privates dangling in the air all around me. Why is it only in the Marines one has to suffer the ignominy of being starkers?
Beastings are literally to degrade your physical condition and exhaust your mental resilience.
That's the whole point of them.
It's easy enough to pass the physical sessions if you're fresh and rested but a totally different game when you're knackered.
As to nakedness ... get a grip. You're training to be able to kill people, if seeing a 🍆 puts you off your game you'd be no use at all in combat.
you're not cut out for it leave it at that.
@@fs9612 fs -- I know I'm not cut out to be a Royal Marine. It still doesn't answer any of my questions on beastings (as in punishments, as distinct from training) and why men have to parade in the noddy? Many Army Officers are not cut out to be Royal Marines. But they are still good fighting men. They are brothers in Arms and should not be trying to score Brownie points, one over the other! Does that make sense?
Beastings are used as a punishment when you dont follow instructions or things they have taught you. It works so why would you not do it?
@@texx45 Texx -- You need to guard against those instructors who think training consists of beastings, gap, beastings, gap, beastings and so on, where the interlude or gap corresponds to "training" as distinct from "beastings." There is something fundamentally wrong with the instruction or instructor if beastings comprise the day's training. It's a step back in time where it was considered "good form" to flog errant sailors to death for minor infractions. If I were a Royal Marines Officer, I would have something to say to the Commanding Officer about this.
Sort that haircut out, and get on the flank lofty!
Clueless 😊
My arse, watch there’s no Iranian’s about remember the time they took the Britts prisoner in the Iraq war, in the Persian Gulf lol.
I take it your ex this and ex that hey ! LMAO
How come you've edited your post but it still makes fuck all sense?
That's a skill.
No different than our regular troops.
Very different right down to the basics actually.
If course John ......Stag on .....
Massively different to Pongos, far higher standards and far greater output.
The Corps is 1/4 the size of the Infantry yet provides 4x the number of personnel to UKSF?
How do you think that happens 🙄
