  • I love a good ditch to fish in. This one even surprised me how the fish were living in this creek that was not even flowing. The redfin Pickerel is such a cool fish and can live in such shallow water. The aggressive hits from such a tiny fish are so much fun to watch.

    Down here in Florida, that "type of Pike" gets 12 - 14 inches and are real good eating. Most of us "jig" with a top water bait to get them to hit. Great fun because of how hard they hit.

    We got Redfin pickerel here near Philly, they’re in super small creek system and seem to be in isolated populations it’s crazy lol they’re actually a rare species for PA

    Very cool little spot and the red fin pickerel to boot! We have some chain pickerel in IL and regular Northern pike. Chain pickerel like the red fin are pretty tolerant to warmer water. So much fun on the light and ultralight spinning gear. Blessings brother John

    I really enjoy these videos John, the multi species is always exciting to see , but I have to say that I am a bit sad that we didn't get to see as much of Blake this time. you guys have a great chemistry on camera and he has an infectious personality just like you do.. makes for great video.     Roostertail is my goto in rivers and creeks like the hellgrammite or Yumdinger is yours! I put a little 4-ball chain swivel about a foot above them to help prevent line twist and still let the blade spin like it should. My brother and I used to make trips regularly targeting chain pickerel (we call them Jack in South Alabama), but I've only ever caught redfin pickerel in crawfish rakes. Grass pickerel fall in between the chain and the redfin, maxing out at about 13 inches or so. Stay safe!

    Awesome redfin! I know about the pickerel but I live in central Canada. The only Esox species up here are pike and muskie. I have never caught any pickerel yet, not even chain. East coast trip sounds great 😉

    Spinners are great for Pickerel. I remember as a boy always using Mepps Minnows and catching them. Spoons are good too.

    Fun video! I live in North Florida, and I love catching redfins! I catch them with little popping bugs and surface mufflers on a little 3w flyrod. Try your smallest surface lure. They hit ‘em like torpedos! They’re like full-out muskies in attitude- but 8 inches long. Good times...

    I learned about these a couple years ago when my wife caught one in a local creek. My dad says that you can use one of it fins and catch the rest of em too.

    You should check out Bait Finesse System or BFS rods and reels. It would make it much easier to cast the small lures in tight quarters.

    We've got saugeyes here in the upstate of SC and they're a little bit bigger version of the pickerel. Super aggressive hits and strong like a carp!

    For fish like that I cut one hook off the treble. Easier to remove hook

    Ultralight fishing is just the best. Bass assassins "panfish assasin" baby shad, in baby bass color has been my new go to. I use a Ice fishing jig head.
    If those are still too big, the Bobby Garland itty bitty swimmers never fail. You need the smallest jigs possible for those. The glacier color is an absolute killer.

    For years we called this fish a pike perch caught just about everywhere we went then they were there
    Then they just disappeared
    Never really got any as big as you're getting. Caught a lot of them in the nets while we saining for minnows

    You mentioned in a previous video about keeping a fish to put in a fish tank. I replied to that comment saying what happened to my 100 gallon creek tank with a little rock bass and said no... Well now i have to say if there was any of them here in south East Missouri id add another tank to my collection. That little guy is to die for.

      I used to keep an aquarium for creek fish when I was young even had cawdads in it. It was actually more satisfying to watch than my tropical aquarium. My classmate down the road kept his pet snapping turtle in one and it was the focus of attention when it was feeding time next to my other neighbor who had a boa constrictor.

    I had no idea any pike species lived further south than Tennessee.. very interesting. I had heard of the redfin pickerel but thought I'd have to travel north for them. Looks like I'm adding Georgia to the list of places to fish!

      i caught a mid sized chain pickerel in a creek near Atlanta that flows into the Chattahoochee. Was thoroughly surprised with that catch because I mostly hear about them being caught up north but I've heard of redfin pickerel being caught in south Georgia

    John I caught what would have been the new state record red fin pickerel in North Carolina about 9 years ago and didn't know it. It weighed 4lbs 8 oz. On Buckhorn lake in Wilson County. Caught it on a orange and brownish senko.

      Probably a Chain Pickerel, and a nice one! Redfins don't get more than about 8" long, and Grass Pickerel are almost a pound at max size. Stay safe!

      Just to let you know. I ve been fishing a studying fish for over forty years. The current redfin chain pickerel for North Carolina is 2lbs 4oz. So yes the do get fairly large for the species. Happy fishing.

    Have you ever considered going barbless? There isn't much, if any difference, in landing percentage. The real advantage comes from being able to release your catch faster (= more fishing time) with less harm. Plus, unhooking yourself, when things don't according to plan, is much easier.

    One other thing: I always catch them in real still water. Usually with lots of snags and cover. Like this video, I catch them with warmouth a lot.

    Awesome video bro! I always hated using swivels on spinners like that. Kills the spin and overall action. Try some Panther Martins similar in size and color (if you havent tried them already).

    can i use a small reel with 8kg max drag for ultralight? I can't find good enough budget price for a decent UL reel that's affordable at my place, I have this.. look small enough to be UL setup but its 8 pounds max drag.

    Red fin I’ve only ever caught three. Only in one small creek uo the rd. The aggressive asf. Like like walker baits. Oddly enough

    Cool video! Do you have chiggers in Tennessee? If so, what do you use to avoid such abominations? That grass looks like it would house chigger cities. My legs/ankles get eaten up in NC and that is with shoes/socks/pants...

    I use Rooster Tails quite a bit and they catch everything! I always remove the treble hook and use a single hook instead. It causes less injury to the fish and makes it a lot easier to remove the hook. For Panfishing I normally use Rooster Tails, Beetle Spins and Roadrunner jig heads, my fishing trinity. Love your videos on both of your channels!!

      I swear by rooster tails but I end up having spinner issues with them after a short while and can never get them right again. They are good for trout in this neck of the woods also.

      I always switch out the blade for a slightly larger one before using. I have never had a problem with a Beetle Spin. I use them the most as they catch everything.

    Most pickerel are on the banks or inside the grass or weeds. They hide in the grass and blend in

    If I could only have 1 lure this would be it.
    Don't know where you live , but in GA there is nothing swimming I haven't caught with it in 40 years. Bass...stripers, hybrids, white, small&large mouths. all panfish, trout, crappie, pickeral (jacks) yellow perch and different kind of catfish also bowfin. If it swims it will hit a rooster tail. Maybe you ain't holding your mouth right if you can't get something to hit it.
