Australia's terrible F1 luck

- In recent years it's seemed like being Australian is an automatic handicap if you're looking to race in Formula One - be it that you get stuck with a team that doesn't treat you right or you don't get a seat at all despite deserving one.
In this video I wanted to summarise for you just how bad this country's luck is with Formula One.

the way both riciardo and webber were placed in a very powerful redbull car, but both just happened to be in that car in a season where they would be overshadowed by someone who was unrivaled in talent, and who had just arrived in the sport is kind of an interesting parallel
And the only Australian to have unparalleled talent is without a seat .
Cant make that up !
@@medipeace307 unparalleled? Where do you think Piastri will rank next year on the gird? That's quite a bold claim
@@michaeldellorso889 i think he meant Piastri is the best ozzy rn
@@michaeldellorso889 where he places fully depends on what car he is in lets be honest, and when you look at his Juniour career it rivals Leclercs and Russels and they are two of the most promising drivers on the grid, if Leclerc, Russel, Verstappen, Piastri and maybe Norris all had equal machinery we would be in for one awesome fight
Firstly Ricciardo was outperforming his teammates at RB if not mayching them , and he never had q wdc winning car people should stop that narative that Ricciardo is at the same level with Webber , Ricciardo is way better even Weber admited it
In year 1980, Australian driver Alan Jones won his sole title against some of the hardest competition in F1 history.
Four decades later, Satan is still claiming his part of the deal.
But that's just my theory.
😲😲
I didn't understand, could you explain
@@suuuuuuuu124 In pop culture, making deal with Satan usually means that you are gonna achieve something big, but it will also have bad consequences. So, with Alan Jones making deal with Satan in order to win the championship, future Australian F1 drivers will be "cursed" to never win a championship.

Exactly he was in a position to win it more than Vettel. The last race started with 4 drivers having a shot at championship Webber, Alonso, Seb and Hamilton of whom Webber and Alonso were front runners they finished P7 and P8 which let the lead open to Seb who secured the title
You think Australia has had it bad in terms of drivers? Think about Italy, lol. Almost 70 years without a drivers' championship in spite of the litany of grand prix drivers it has given the world. Also, being a Tifoso when it's not the early 2000s is pain.

Australia absolutely dominates on two wheels... Especially in the Motocross, enduro and freestyle Motocross scenes. Per head of population, no country delivers the same number of race wins and championships.
Yeah nah, Spain's got that covered from every angle..

That feeling when: FOM claims all of your videos and you as a young and up and coming motivated creator have to stress out and worry so much about what footage you use, you just default to using F1 video game footage.
Man I feel you dude, but don’t get discouraged, you are doing a great job.
Ask Josh Revell about some tips.

Halve the wheels and we go pretty hard. Bayliss, McCoy, Doohan, Stoner, Beattie, Gardner. It is pretty dismal we cant convert that to four. Hopefully Piastri to Williams to get his foot in the door for a better team
Are you serious mate?? Mark Webber had a good run for the F1 title in 2010. It was mostly between Alonso and home for the last race, but Vettel snatch the championship. So that year he was not in the shadow of Vettel. But after that, yes.
Otherwise, good video.
@paper plane not really, he was the favorite one for the championship at Red Bull and he was the one that Ferrari was mostly worried about in 2010.
they were so worried about him that Alonso lost the 2010 title because Ferrari wanted to avoid an undercut in the last race by pitting Alonso at the same time Webber pitted while Vettel stayed out and ended up winning the championship... basically, Red Bull baited Ferrari.
@paper plane you clearly said it, he was the one to win it all.
@paper plane Alonso was in Red Bull?
I see your point. But what I am arguing is that he had a real chance at the 2010 title. People always look back at Vettels dominate era between 2010-2013 but forget how close it was in 2010. Four people could have won the championship at the last race. And the history would have been completely different if Webber won.
But my point is that I would not call that Webba was in the shadow of Vettel in 2010 if you look into the whole season.
@@cesarxmbert well this trend continues, look what happened at Hungary.
Mark Webber could have become an f1 world champion. He’s one of my favourite drivers.

George Russell: Am I a joke to you
yeah tbf😅
Well, the only driver to ever beat George Russell in WDC so far is... Robert Kubica. And he's done it singlehandedly. Let that sink in...
Well even outside formula 1... Will Power, veteran from Indycar, a damn fast driver but unlucky as hell, I only started to watch indycar last season but I could see numerous time he lost wins or good finishing positions due to mishaps out of his control, like when his car overheated in a red flag near the end of the race, costing him a win, being crashed by eager rookies... And then was a big crash some seasonsago that killed a driver and nearly killed him too
Detroit Race 1, 2021 🥸

And Lando seems to be quite popular himself with far better race results
Alan jones back in the day was a weopon and won the 1980 title first for Williams
And Brabham how won three championship.
If you want to look at it this way you could argue that Germany had not the best luck either, ofc there are Michael and Seb that overshadow all the drivers that weren’t so lucky but you have to imagine that those two were the first two german drivers to become champion. And keep in mind Germany‘s big culture for car‘s as the biggest car manufacturers come from there and at one point there were 6 or 7 german drivers on the grid and we still only had three different german champions
Webber had his chance to become WC in 2010 but binned it in Korea.
Danny Ric could’ve been WC if he stayed at Redbull, but left instead.
Oscar? I guess will find out.
Daniel Ricciardo would never be champion as long as Max Verstappen was in Red Bull
i mean at the last round in 2010 Webber was favored to win over vettel and both were behind alonso. poor guy just lost out on strategy.
Webber could have won the title one race earlier, but Red Bull gave Vettel the better strategy in Brazil to ensure he was still in the title fight come Abu Dhabi.
RB would rather give Vettel half a chance at a title, than ensure a title for Webber.
For a country that has less citizens than some cities, they actually have been surprisingly successful.
Yeah no, 25 million people is not nothing. Austria got 4 WDC and other great drivers with 8 million inhabitants
@@mrworldwide187 is pretty much a German state and its handy to be in Europe
@@mrworldwide187 Belgium has 11 million inhabitants and has zero WDC and only one who actually could've. Given that Australia is nowhere near the epicenter of F1, things have gone very, very well. Austria has a geography that favours those who can turn a wheel in anger. Finland is another country with few inhabitants compared to total landmass that sprouted a whole legion of excellent racers. These countries are all within spitting distance of england, where the big money was in the early days.
It's gonna be Ricciardo that moves. It has to be. I'm sure he'll get a drive... somewhere, either at Williams, or Aston Martin, but this is the end of his career as a serious competitor.
Last year's win was a fluke, every single race except that one was... not amazing. He was decent in Renault for a bit, but they couldn't give him the car.
Now, he also doesn't have a good car, but he's also massively overshadowed by Norris. Ricciardo is not the future anymore, Norris is. Him, Russell, Verstappen, Leclerc, Piastri.
Ricciardo's time has passed. There's gonna be some interesting comparisons to Webber and his story. Red Bull, overshadowed by a young talent, etc...
Also FIA being paid to move the Aus GP to a shit track in '96 instead of Adelaide Street Circuit where racing wasn't awful
Sainz was more loved at mclaren by fans than ric, not the other way around.
Sainz hasn't won in either McLaren or Ferrari unlike Ricciardo.
Nah but danny ric could win a championship if he stayed with redbull cuz the first season with redbull he got 3rd in the championship and that’s not something to forget
2014 season is irrelevant. Mercedes were light years ahead of the competition.

Australia also had Dave Walker who is considered one of F1’s worst drivers because he drove for Lotus alongside Emerson Fittipaldi and while Emmo went on and won the world championship Dave didn’t score a single point for the team.

Isnt piastri all but confirmed for williams seat?
It is rumours

Honestly, I don't see Williams dropping either of their drivers. Albon is way too good to be dropped, and they need Latifi's money.
I hope he does make it to F1 someday, but I can't see him ending up at Williams.
@@mrtom2854 they don’t need Latifi’s money though
not unlucky if you compare to other nations my example will be Sweden imagine the 1978 you have two f1 drivers both are superstars for Lotus one has cancer and can't drive the other one is faster than his teammate and even his teammate admitted that he was faster and he didn't get to pass him because of his contract. Monza 78 he got in to a first lap crash and with no medical car behind the drivers like James Hunt pulled him out with totally crushed legs it takes more than a minute for medical professionals. he gets flown to Milano where it takes time because they don't know what to do meanwhile the hospital is unsanitary with cigarette's on the floor and under the night he died because of kidney failure, later the other one dies both within 2months.
1985 Johansson for Ferrari you lead in imola 3laps left you run out of fuel.
"if you disagree with me, then you're wro-"
Piastri's gonna be world champion and i guarantee it
I feel some people don't mention Jack Doohan, in F2 he is doing pretty well for himself
Sir John Arthur Brabham AO OBE was an Australian racing driver who was Formula One World Champion in 1959, 1960, and 1966.
I mean no offense, but Mark Webber was never at a championship level. He used to be a good number 1, but not great (didn't have the speed most top drivers show) but he was an excellent number 2 driver. Ricciardo? He had a brief window, but after that he fell off because honestly his mentality isn't up there with Hamilton and the reality is he doesn't know how to make decisions when picking teams.
But it's funny because both Ricciardo and Piastri will be in an era of F1 that is closing out and that's when pure talent could get you a seat. Given the corporate level and the prize money... pay drivers are mostly the only drivers that make it. It's not just about owning a team or paying a big cheque/sponsorship for your kid to make it (cough Latifi cough), it's having the money to move up the ranks or even make a drive at any level feasible.
Look at Lando or George Russell, their parents are very wealthy. They're not Billionaires that have to buy teams to guarantee seats... but they're drivers with talent who had every opportunity at their feet given their parents wealth. Ricciardo had good upbringings, but were not part of that tax bracket. It's why it's truly wild and impressive what Hamilton has achieved given his background.
Don't know about Piastri, but Ricciardo's family are certainly not poor. In fact I'm pretty sure they're millionaires.
he was 14 points off of the championship in 2010 in a 4 way fight with Vettel, Alonso and Hamilton 3 of the best drivers in F1 history, you dont get that close by not having the speed.
@@mikespearwood3914 eh I think you're mistaken, people confuse Ricciardo's dad with a wealthy businessman, but that's not actually Ricciardo's dad. I would say his dad was well off but not a multi millionaire, think his dad was involved in Perth's mining industry. Ricciardo had to squeeze a lot of sponsorships to go to Europe and even then only had 2 years to prove himself before running out of cash.
@@comeatmebro3229 I mean, by definition, he was NO CHAMPIONSHIP driver and you kind of made my point, he lost to Vettel in an excellent car... his speed was not up there with his counterparts and he's admitted himself countless times.
@@FreddyMacT f1 and racing in general is all about money. If you think 500k-1mil a year is cheap, and your parents can afford/get it from "sponsors" you're out of touch with the common man.

7:00 The highest attended Grand Prix in Australia is actually the 1995 Grand Prix in Adelaide with an estimated 520,000 in attendance and only across 3 days (current Aus GP has 4 days of events) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Grand_Prix#Spectator_attendance_since_1995
Enjoyed it bro
I dont think that Australia is really unlucky in F1 thorughout the history.
Australia has only a population of 26 million and no really strong domestic car industry. Yet still the country got 4 drivers titles and 43 GP wins (same amount as a country like Italy). Which makes them the 6th succesful country in F1 history, only beeing bested by bigger countries and Finland.
So i would say Australia is overperforming consindering their "ressources".
Also Webber was not really unlucky, he was just beaten by a better teammate. Piastri cant be yet called unlucky, since his career is just about to start.
So there is only Ricciardo left. And yeah, he got kind of unlucky with his timing to join and leave Red Bull and in general his team choices/options.
Those honorable mentions were just not really good drivers, they werent unlucky. They were just bad.
So overall, i dont think its as bad as the video suggest it to be. 😘
Italy is the most unlucky country in that regard
Mentioning jack brabhams son but not the man himself is kinda weird, since brabham won 3 f1 championships.
I guess formula one began in 2010 for a lot of people…
Was Jack Brabham unlucky? Winning three world championships doesn’t sound like prime material for a video about Australia’s bad luck in the sport🤷♂️

You forgot that Webber also made a backflip with a Mercedes CLR.
As an Australian, this does cut deep.. even Webber always had bad luck.. all could be champions if luck goes their way..
At least they still have someone to cheer on in f1🇧🇷
James Courtney should be on here after he crashed a test f1 car and had to be pulled out if the wreck by micheal Schumacher before his career even started.
Well specifically single seaters but the whole oceanic scene is incredible in endurance and GT which is growing quickly and controversially better than F1 at the moment in terms of racing, the grid, the variety of cars, the tracks, the way race control is operated. It's just F1 where aussies and kiwis are unlucky.

Ricciardo kinda did this to himself, he faced a terrible Renault engine then Red Bull changed to Honda(that gave them a championship) so he fled to Renault to face more engine problems so he fled to mclaren where he hoped that he’d be the better driver and so far that is not the case with poor performance after another so I will be surprised if he resigns with Mclaren but I see him going to a Aston Martin or Williams I think his shot at drive for a championship aspiring team is over
Looking forward to seeing how Piastri fares against Albon next season. Hope Williams improve somewhat so they can both be competitive.
I think Belgium needs a little bit of luck too, Vandoorne didn't perform well and Max chose to be Dutch instead of Belgian

“Really well attended” it was the largest crowd they’ve had. 420k
This year's Aus GP was Melbourne's highest attended weekend. The Aus GP highest attended weekend goes to Adelaide's last GP in 1995 with 520 000 people
Adelaide had the advantage of a higher crowd cap, if Saturday and Sunday were allowed more in and not sold out, it would have beaten the record.

If RB had the fastest car in 2014, Seb would be the world champion. Seb just didn't want to driver the car RB had in 2014. Simply because he knew he couldn't win the title with it.

Come on, Webber would maybe took 1 WDC not four, out of those 4 years, 2 WDC would probably been taken by Alonso.
Canada could be the dawn of false talents/break throughs
Villeneuve after winning 97 didn’t do much and looked very less talented
Lance stroll gets the youngest podium sitter and front row in 2017 dosent do much till 2020 and in that years stays 4th in the standings till majello and then doesnt show enough consistency to look as good as the first 3/4 of 2020
Latifi would have finished ahead of George in 2020 due to having more p11 but George gets his merc chance 2021 gets points before George and should have finished closer to him but Belgium happened then just struggles to look as good as those points break though
It’s tough being a Canadian and a fan of Canadians where they always look like there going to break though and change the game/there image then become a sort of meme in f1
I must mention. You mention luck yes. So the point skew is heavily favoured to lando. 50-15 but Jeddah he was faster and infront and had an engine issue same as Spain and screwed by strategy in Canada. Plus the damage under the car after the lap 1 incident with Carlos which just basically ruled Daniel out of coming back.
Like been a few small things at the worst of times that makes it look worse than it really is currently.
