10 F1 drivers who split with teams before their contract was up

- Formula 1 history certainly proves that, with endless examples of drivers and teams who didn’t stay together as long as their deals suggested they would.
At The Race, we’ve already covered some of these cases in our videos, including this look at Alain Prost being sacked by Ferrari and our run down of drivers who didn’t make the most of their big chance in F1.
For this video, we’ve picked out a variety of examples - in some, the driver has decided to go elsewhere, in others, the team has had enough and there’s even an example where a big-name driver was paid a huge sum of money NOT to race.

Being kicked from Racing Point was the best thing that could've happened for Perez's F1 career in hindsight.
Few people talk about how lucky Perez career moves were. Started in Sauber, joined McLaren and was dropped right before it fell apart. Then joined force India when it was a strong midfield team and left it right before it became a backmarker and went to a title contender RedBull
The best ever contract break f1 driver could ever dream 😂
@@luizlokos1 lucky? You must be so freaking blind😂😂
@@luizlokos1 Actually, McLaren fell apart the season before Perez joined. That's why Lewis went to Mercedes. By the time Perez arrived at McLaren, everything was already destroyed inside that team. McLaren let go of Checo because of his attitude, not his performance. Maybe Perez has been lucky, but if you think that if he waited for 1 more year in Sauber, he was bound to replace Massa at Ferrari and partner with Alonso for 2014 instead of Kimi who had an abysmal season. Actually, he would have been offered the Ferrari seat in 2013 but Massa decided to stay. We will never know what would have happened with Checo and Alonso in the red cars during those years, but I like to think it would have been amazing.
@@luizlokos1 Nah, mclaren were race winners when checo joined and he had the misfortune of being on Mclaren's first car that didn't win a race since 1996.
Finally, Mazepin recognised as equals with Senna!! We were all too afraid to say it
Mazepin was truly a brilliant driver, among the best of formula 1
I cried endless tears when they kicked him out of F1
@@OumuamuaOumuamua ong
"JJJ laugh" You serious?
Mazepin-Hamilton = 7
Alonso-Vettel = 6
Looking at how Aston Martin flopped massively and how Checo is performing right now in Red Bull I'd say getting sacked by Racing Point is the best thing that ever happened to Sergio Perez
And seeing how he continues to pull out his Sunday best while he improves his qualy pace shows that he can still perform even in the crucible of the RB number 2 seat.
Absolutely!
I'm just wondering how things would've turned out if RP/AM didn't look out to replace Checo with Vettel, and RB took Vettel back instead. I'm not saying that would have happened if Checo stayed with AM, just wondering what if. Would there have been more rivalry between Seb and Max than with Checo and Max? Would Hamilton maybe have run away with the title in that case?
Fernando Alonso as an Aston Martin driver lying (at the time of comment) third in the drivers championship in 2023 with podiums in each of the first 3 races, just entered the conversation
Micheal was taking care of his brother when they were in the scene together. Imagine how much he would've helped his own son, Mick right now. Such a tragedy..
Mert Ronael, i bet this is good
Micheal gets pissed that his brother was given team orders to stay back
Also Michael wins by team mates getting team orders to let him through.
He helps Mick by giving him his last name.
@@blackmagic3286 mick is a great driver
@@IIGrayfoxII Hamilton only got wins through team orders
I wonder what a Checo-Vettel line up could have done at Aston the last couple of years. The cars haven’t been great but they’d be a good partnership
Vettel just wants to move to his off-grid ranch, he's had it with F1.
@@johnleven8907 I think he's had it with teams run like shite, not F1 itself
@@johnleven8907 explain how you know this.
Yes maybe... everybody knows Racing Point fired the wrong driver.
@@Atlas.Brooklyn I don't. It's speculation based off of his behavior en results. I think a motivated Vettel would do better, even in this awkward AM team.
The greatest mistake of all time: Kubica going rallying in 2011…
Rumour has it he Kubica had a Ferrari contract in his back bacck pocket and then the rallying accident happened...
@@pauljennings8432 not a rumour
Ferrari- "Alonso, how dare you look elsewhere for a drive while we are trying to replace you"
I'd include Johnny Herbert. In 1994, increasingly disillusioned by the dismal performance of his Mugen Honda powered Lotus, coupled with the team itself struggling for survival, he shocked the F1 Community by going from Lotus in Portugal (with whom he had raced mostly full time since 1990 and had a contract to see out the rest of the season), to driving for Ligier at Jerez, taking the place of Eric Bernard who moved the opposite way to Lotus. What made this even more remarkable, Herbert only spent one race weekend with Ligier before being drafted into the Benetton team to try and bolster their Constructors Championship hopes. So in less than a month, Johnny Herbert went from a team on the verge of disappearing from the grid, to one that was on the verge of winning the world championship with Michael Schumacher
Herbert made another error.
@@purwantiallan5089 how do you mean?
I would’ve love to see an honorable mention of JPM at McLaren. It was quite the story and it shocked the paddock.
whos JPM
Juan Pablo Montoya
I still love that Michael Schumacher of all people decided to take issues with someone using team orders.
When it’s towards his brother, it suddenly isn’t okay…
Apparently he had a huge bust up with Eddie Jordan after the race. E.J told Schumacher that if him and Ralf wanted to leave, it would cost them 2 million dollars. Now, f... off!!!
It’s pretty nuts to think about Kimi leaving F1, rallying for 2 years and coming back to lotus and doing so well (based on performance bonus goals) that he pretty much bankrupted lotus.
I think ferrari itself has somewhat toxic environment. Plus that rallying gave him some vacation.
Well, just leave him alone. He knew what he's doing.
People: Did you do it?
Lotus: Yes.
People: What did it cost?
Lotus: Everything..
Lotus: car so bad we'll give you 50k a point.
Kimi : so I started scoring points.....
He got 7 podiums that season 2 of them being wins and he finished 3rd behind Alonso I think.
It probably would have bankrupted Lotus, if he had tried to force them to pay. $6 million never got paid
Interestingly with Senna, after leaving Toleman in a somewhat dubious fashion, he tried to do the same thing with Lotus to go to McLaren, only for Lotus to play hardball and force him to see out of his contract (which is why Johansson got a one year ride with McLaren)
Yeah, supposedly Ron was trying to secure Senna's service for 1987 but Lotus said "Nope". So with Keke retiring at the end of 1986, they decided to pinch Johansson as a stop gap measure until Senna became available
@@theempires5 Unlike Toleman, Lotus didn't give him an option of a buy out, so they were well within their rights to say no. Lotus were also somewhat competitive, so Senna wasn't that disheartened by the fact he had to stay (plus as it turned out McLaren were a bit off the pace in 1987)
@@theempires5 Toleman has entered the chat, Ray Banner.
@@MrSniperfox29 Lotus and Toleman are basically siblings.

Perez: *Closing the gap to the top of leaderboard, wins Monaco, scores great points.
Lawrence: "Yeah, best business decision of my entire career, right Lance?"
You're talking like Perez could have done all that in an Aston Martin. Vettel is better than Perez so, yes, it was a good business decision.
@@wss33 Lance Vettel?
@@wss33
Aston Martin could have a better driver pair with Vettel and Perez.
@@wss33 The point is Stroll should’ve sacked his own son for Perez who clears Stroll.
Giedo van der Garde. He had a contract but then Sauber took a bag of money from Marcus Ericsson. The Judge even ruled that Giedo should be allowed to race. So Sauber had to pay him millions to make him go away.
This move proved to be bad
Although Nasr and Ericsson had great season in 2015
Rumours say that - after Giedo's antic in which he went with full racing suit into the Sauber motorhome - it was Bernie who paid him a couple of millions to stay away from the F1 grid, because the negativity would damage the monetary value of F1. Sauber had to pay him damage money as well, but that was after court hearings. So financially Giedo was better off in the end by not racing for Sauber xD
Big one that springs to my mind is Niki Lauda moving to Ferrari when he’d just signed with another team!
Also, there was Giedo van der Garde who sued the team after they signed 3 drivers for a single year and then dropped him.
Is Danny Ric next i’m guessing 🤔
Hell no. I pray every night before I go to sleep that he won’t leave🙏🏽
No way, he's been doing so great!
Sadly it seems like it might just go that way in the long run the way things are going
I'm guessing that's the inspiration for making this video
Well he's paid three times more than Lando and he's currently not showing why🤷🏿♂️
de Cesaris being replaced because of crash damage is hilarious. It reminded me of Piquet saying he felt unsafe being in the back of the grid because he'd be close to de Cesaris lmao.
I would have included Sebastian vettle. he used contract clause of not winning any races. It was the biggest shock in my life how the guy who dominated with Red Bull left .
Well 2014 red bull was one of the worst cars, its understandable. Btw he is written Vettel, he aint no frenchmen "vettle" 😭😭😭
@@marwin436 The 2014 Redbull finished second in the standings...
@@andrewmacdiarmid7569 yeah because of ricciardo, Vettel didnt win a single race that year. Its terrible considering that he won 4 championships in a row before that
He literally won the 2013 constructors by himself. He had more points himself than the second place team Mercedes.
But he was still beaten by Ricciardo, a younger teammate who now himself is being beaten by Lando
@@marwin436 but if he would have won than he wouldn't be allowed to leave. Belgium prime example he clearly intentionally let Daniel pass without team orders or anything because he couldn't win if he did he would have to stay at red bull
Looking at Aston Martin's form, phew what a bullet Perez dodged there
To be fair, if it was Perez-Vettel, it would be a monster lineup lmao. Sadly the Strolls are unable to realize that
@paper plane or maybe bc stroll was literally the owners son 😂
I think Rene Arnoux's sacking at Ferrari would make an interesting video in itself in the unlikely scenario anyone wanted to go there...
IIRC nobody actually knows why it happened, Arnoux and Ferrari have never spoken about it
Rene Arnoux getting dropped by Ferrari, still one of the all time great mysteries as to why that happened. Also Jacques Villeneuve being dropped by Sauber, what made that one memorable was his comments that they'd "regret" replacing him, which when you consider they replaced him with Kubica, I don't think they regretted it in the slightest.
For what they did to Checo I'm glad to see the team where they are now.
I would have thought Sauber with their multitude of drivers under contract would make the list.
Nikita Mazepin was preparing for his 2nd season in Formula1 with Haas in Feb 2022. His rigorous training methods included spinning across the straights and pushing other drivers and other Jedi methods. His love of his life "Ms.Gravel" stood there watching and welcoming the GOAT into her. If this continued, the GOAT would have taken all of Ms.Gravel for himself leaving Formula1 to die.
At this moment, Haas decided to tear up the contract to save Formula1 from dying, even though they knew that means the GOAT would not be able to race anymore in Formula1
Ahhhh a video from the race, a break from my exam stress
"And this is how I finished ahead of Senna in the standings" - Mazespin
0:32 subtle, very subtle
What a tremendous strike of good luck it was for Perez that Stroll sr. hired a has been 4 time champion in his place. Never in a million years he would guess that Red Bull would hire him for the 2021 season, as the Aston Martin team progressively sunk to the end of the grid. As some Buddhists say -"luck is merit". ¡OLÈ CHECO!
Alonso actually had 2 instances of broken deal, with the first happened in 2007 after rivalry with Lewis Hamilton, Ron Dennis tore his contract and let Alonso go away.
Ferrari in recent history.
2006 - Pushed Schumacher out the door for Kimi.
2009 - Sacked Kimi for Alonso while paying out Kimi’s $40 million salary for 2010 and also paying Alonso $40 million for 2010.
2014 - Sacked Alonso for saying he wanted a car “like what my rivals have” for his birthday
2019 - Sacked Vettel for not meeting performance targets
All world champions.
It’s always the driver’s fault but in recent times they can’t develop a car over the course of a year to save their lives. Watch them get left for dust this year by RB and also Mercedes by the second half of the year.
FERARRI EGO is basically their Iceberg it causes the downfall yet they realise but Don't care. Can't wait to see RB dominate again
Mercedes won't develop that much to catch RB and Ferrari for this year, considering that only George is delivering the consistency right now whilst Lewis is still trying to get to grips with the W13 in certain areas.
As of now, they should focus on developing the W14 for the next season to be competitive with them and keep McLaren at bay for 3rd.
Vettel wasn't sacked. His contract just wasn't extended.
What happpened to Charles @Monaco, and seeing HOW seb Drive mediocre Aston Martin, am happy Seb left Marenello.
@@christianalden4603 honestly though Mercedes is catching up and with Ferrari majorly fucking up every single weekend whilst Mercedes keeps consistency (despite a slower car) I wouldn’t be surprised if Mercedes takes P2 on the constructors from Ferrari. Ferrari has clearly the fastest car but they’ve thrown away their championship in 5 races. Charles is sadly getting the taste of the toxic arrogant Ferrari culture
I didn't know Michael bought Ralf out of his jordan contract. Thats pretty cool.
5:24 One of the best looking cars
I feel like this is a subtle precursor to Danny R's upcoming split with McLaren.
I'm pretty sure, Ricciardo won't leave McLaren until the end of this season
If Alonso would've stayed at Ferrari until 2019 he would've won 2018 and maybe 2017 so i think Ferrari made the biggest mistake chosing Vettel instead of Alonso
Agree👍
Agree! But Alonso made a terrible mistake too moving to McLaren - what a tragedy indeed.
@@MacApple21 He wasted his talent and it is really a shame
Or in other words: If Alonso had kept his mouth shut during the 2014 season, he would've got the contract extention and with that won the 2018 and maybe 2017 title without giving Ferrari the need to look for alternatives like Vettel for 2015.
@paper plane
That is quite possibly the dumbest comment I’ve read today. Well done 👍🏻
one that I was missing was the 2015 sauber drama where they had signed 3 drivers for 2 seats, in the end giedo van der garde started a lawsuit against the team, won it but due to time constraints he couldnt drive in melbourne. After that him and the team reached a settlement and Van der Garde's F1 dream was over. Its rumoured that he was paid 15 million not to drive that season
Oh yeah!
Can’t wait for you to add Daniel Ricciardo to this list in 2023
Lance is the son of Canadian oligarch Lawrence Stroll.
THANK YOU PAPA STROLL !!!
Checo wouldn’t be at Redbull thriving without you kicking him out lol
Imagine alonso would have stayed with ferrari untill 2019, I could see him winning the WDC in 2018 and 19 in that car.
The 2019 Ferrari wasn’t capable of winning the championship, mercs literally got 5 consecutive 1-2 finishes

You’re clearly a clueless Hamilton fanboy 🤣
Hey The Race love your videos ❤️
Good choices with #1 unsurprising in the end.
Contracts getting ended/leaving prematurely are rare, but always possible, hence, people are right to be reserved on Ricciardo, although I'm positive he'll see out his 3-year deal until the end. Admittedly, I'd totally forgotten about Alonso's Ferrari commitment lasting until 2016-end.
Ace video, surprised 1996>1997 Hill wasn't up there
EJ spins a great story on the Michael/Ralf exit from Jordan!
The Gitanes sponsored Ligiers sure did look good! One of my favorite liverys ever with that shade of blue 👌
As long as I remeber checo's contract with mclaren in 2013 was also terminated before it expired, in favour of K Mag
I’m kinda glad that Lance & Lawrence are getting what they deserve after Lawrence decided to kick Sergio out 🤷🏻♂️
I feel bad for Seb tho, the team has become a running joke for the last two seasons.
@@ShineStreet I think Seb is outperforming the car this season so he'll be fine :)
@paper plane imagine how much better the team would be if lance wasn’t there Perez and seb were a duo
It would be fun to see a similar video on the times teams have paid a transfer fee for a driver
2:39 "...when Russia invaded Ukraine" and ".. Russian oligarch father Dmitry" are types of sentences we should hear often in the media. Bots on social media are trying to play this down so hard
Kinda expected Michael Schumachers jordan contract to be mentioned!
A master class in how split with a team!
Happy for Checo however at the time it was painful to watch. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
He crashed and bought Ocon out of a F1 seat. He deserved to not have a team, happy to see he has finally accepted he is a 2nd driver and stopped crashing into the better driver in his team
You can get ready to add Daniel Riccardo to this list.
Man they are reaaaaallly fanning the flames, aren’t they?
Very good, but still waiting for the video "The Strange Case of Esteban Tuero"
This is made clearly as a wink to the ricciardo situation and i love it
One of the last this happened before Mazepin was gasly being switched with albon that you should maybe have mentioned since gasly was switched mid season
Gasly and Albon had both Red Bull contracts. So there is no broken contract just switched seats for them
Daniel ricciardo 😳
Alonso's decisions over teams have been one of the reasons he stuck at 2 titles.
One of those 'what if's' if he stayed and extended his contract with Ferrari, would he have been to secure a championship with the team in 2017 or 2018 in place of Vettel.
@@adz5936 And of course McLaren is now arguable more competitive than Alpine, and if the first time round at McLaren he hadn't upset the apple cart he may well have won the following year
Not just his decisions. F1 drivers are a key part of how a car is developed. Their feedback is essential and they effectively end up with a car moulded to them. If they put a part on Max’s Red Bull and he’s quicker - they move in that direction with development.
Alonso is an amazing driver, but has caused friction in a lot of the teams he’s been in.
Drivers now are realising the value of loyalty and having a car built around their driving style. Drivers like Max, Lando, Charles and possibly George are looking to stay with their teams indefinitely, through good times and bad.
@@britishrose9417 Yeah Alonso has had a tendency to burn bridges where he went. Seems to have mellowed out a fair bit since his return last year. I think he might be realising its good to build the team around him rather fuel negativity.
@@adz5936 Alonso if he stayed on Ferrari he would struggle to even beat Bottas
2018 however he might had to compete with Perez or Sainz
Rubens Barrichello was contracted to stay with Ferrari until 2006. However, he left the team 1 year earlt.
Damn y'all include Andrea De Cesaris in this and not Juan Montoya when he announced he was going to Nascar.
Kimi getting 25mil to not race is the most Kimi thing you can hear
That win for Perez most likely saved his F1 career. He deserved a drive, but it's questionable if he would have stayed in F1 if it weren't for that win.
Not forgetting when Jenson Button signed to drive for BAR whilst already under contract to Williams!!
What about Moreno in ‘91? The legal battle resulted in Jordan getting enough money to continue racing and some German dude getting a chance at driving with Benetton
Lauda could be on the list
Ferrari bought him out of his BRM contract (which annoyed the team principal because Lauda's results were taking the team up the standings)
After the Ferrari buyout he also walkout from Brabham right as they became a potent front runner in the 80s
defs aint alluding to danny ric
Just imagine. Fernando alonso and sebastian vettel. Together at a front runner
Good guy Michael Schumacher paying off Ralph's buyout clause
Somewhat surprised that Mansell returning to f1 with McLaren was not part of this. Then again I think that particular ship had sailed in its own video. *shrugs*
Gee I wonder why this video is being produced now? The title might as well called it “Look behind you Danny Ric.”
So this video is like 50% Ferrari, meaning they drop their drivers quite often 😐
“Mark Schumacher”? Funny way to pronounce Ralf at 4:25. Lol
Aston Martin morale would’ve been horrible had Perez not gone to Red Bull. They were so happy for him too at Baku last year
I wonder if Ayumu/Perez combo at Red Bull could be possible.
Sergio should be listed twice since he got sacked from McLaren in 2013 as well... and let's not forget Fernando left McLaren after 2007.
Imagine being paid $25 million to not work...
Riccardo moving from Renault to mcclaren is the worst mistake in recent years
Was not he dropped? Or was the car of Renault too bad for him? Was not there something like that?
I don’t know why it took me this long to figure out that both Schumacher bothers left Jordan before their contracts were up
Heinz-Herald Frentzen Was Sacked By Jordan In 2001 Before His Contract Was Up
Those 10 million Mercedes paid for Bottas were money very well spent. They might not have won all of those constructor titles without Mr Saturday.
Interesting, I had no idea Michael Schumacher was against team orders.
How did Buttons contract talks between Williams and Honda not get any attention
I was expecting Nico Rosberg to be in the video to be honest. I’m pretty sure that he had a contract with Mercedes until 2018
Mazepin is One of the Drivers of all time. He's a Mazebillion dollar driver, with Mazemillion skills. My jaw is on the floor when he say "Its Mazespin time!" as he Spins everybody.
I always think Michael Andretti has an interesting story.
Right on time to make the Riccardo Mclaren split a reality. Get my boy outta that team. Ric needs to be the main guy to flourish. Williams seem like a great fit.
No mention of Michael Schumacher's contract with Jordan in 1991 that supposedly cover for 92,93 and 94? Also the 40k payment to Jordan for the seat was actually paid for by Peter Sauber after Willi Weber (Schumi's manager) turned to Mercedes to pay for it and Mercedes in turn turned to Sauber as Schumi is Sauber's contracted driver.
IIRC the contract was more verbal than anything, nothing was ever fully signed so there was no contract to break.
Perez didn't even know he was getting a seat at RB until the last minute.
Michael Andretti at McLaren in 1993.
Perez contract was up. He had a contract till the end of 2020 and an extension that’s separate for 2021, they simply voided the extension and never initiated it as it was before 2020 the year was over
