  • Over the years drivers have ended up missing races for all kinds of reasons, but some are much more bizarre than others. Edd Straw has taken a look through the history books to pick out 10 strange stories behind drivers not taking part in a grand prix, ranging from an email mishap to a driver being benched by his own team as a punishment. And who can forget that time a certain someone played tennis on a motorbike*?!

Fun fact Button still carries the grid penalty he recieved for flipping Wehrlien in Monaco. If he is to make a return to F1 this year he will be serving the 3 place grid penalty he recieved 4 years ago.

I think it's fucking hilarious that Alonso missed a race because the Honda engine was so shit Zack allowed him to race in Indy, only for his Honda engine to break in that too.

Another notable mention: Otto Stuppacher 1976 in Monza. He started in a privately financed Tyrell 007 (the car piloted by Sheckter and Depailler in the 1975 season) and missed qualifying for the race (8 secs behind the penultimate driver Arturo Merzario in the weak Wolf-Williams). But rules at that time had it that the permission to start in a GP was not dependent on the time set but on the position in qualifying meaning out of 29 entrants 26 were allowed to start despite their time in qualifying. Hunt, Mass and Watson however had their lap time in qualifying disallowed because of fuel irregularities so Stuppacher could have raced in the GP but it turned out that he had flown back to Vienna on the evening after the qualifying and could not make it to Monza in time to start at the GP.

At the German GP in Hockenheim in 1989, in the days when there were so many teams that they actually had prequalifying before qualifying "proper", the two Rial-Ford cars didn't qualify for the race. Volker Weidler's car was disqualified because it had to be push-started, and Christian Danner's car was too slow to qualify. It turned out later that the team didn't have any parts for the cars which meant that Danner had to drive half of the straights with the rev limiter on because they didn't have the right gear ratios for Hockenheim. Somewhere I have an old casette recording of Danner's car changing up the gears and then going BRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGG for the last few seconds of the straight every lap.

How about, a race ban extended? Eddie Irvine was blamed for the multi car pile up in Brazil 1994 involving himself, Eric Bernard, Jos Verstappen and Martin Brundle. Eddie Jordan appealed the ruling which sentenced him to a one race ban initially. The appeal failed and Irvine's ban was increased to a 3 Grands Prix ban, meaning that he actually missed the Pacific, San Marino and Monaco Grands Prix, before returning in Spain
