- From a novelty browser game to a competitive and social media phenomenon: how did Geoguessr get to where it is today?
This has been a fairly long time in the making. I first played this game almost 11 years ago, and discovered @GeoWizard about 5 years later and was inspired to make my own channel. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the development of this community - we've come a long way.
Many thanks to my brother for helping me out with the music.
Thanks also to my interviewees, those who have given me advice, and those who have allowed me to use their content for this video.

I genuinely wish I could've mentioned every single person, there are so many other great players out there who deserve it, I just have to be disciplined with the editing. Also apologies as there are a couple of rogue discord notifications in here :P
I intended to mention SubSymmetry as someone who achieved an unbelievable standard early on - I accidentally left this out but I’m including it here
@@GeographyChallenges - SubSymmetry definitely deserves a mention! Another one that I would say should be mentioned (I haven't finished the video yet, but didn't see his name in the credits) is King Maff, as, in my experience, his channel was the biggest channel for GeoGuessr pros to congregate on for a long time.
@@GrymmGaming I would agree with those two callouts. SubSymmetry was in the GOAT debate when he broke onto the scene, and Maff's streams were probably the biggest in the pro community in ~2019-20. Fun times.
Incredible GC. Truly a magnum opus of a video for the community.
Thanks Oscar
The impact GeoWizard had on the games popularity and community is something to behold. Great video.
I agree
Great video through and through, I'm glad we can share contributions of all the amazing people we've had in this game. An honor to be part of this video and this community ❤
Thanks RC truly a legend
This is a beautiful video. It's seriously been one of the coolest experiences of my life to see this game become what it is today, and you captured the community's story perfectly. GC you are an absolute legend my friend
Thanks CG been a pleasure to do content alongside you for the last 5+ years
Amazing job! This whole amazing journey to a creation of something completely unique and never before seen in this world had to be documented!
Thanks Alok we’ve come a long way

Banger vid we needed by the perfect person to do it. Crazy thinking about the time I stumbled across your reddit post about your very first video on YT - it's incredible how far the community has grown and developed since then!
Thanks wolf I know you’ll play great this weekend, have as much fun as possible
@@GeographyChallenges ty!❤
this is the best piece of geoguessr content i've seen in a long time, if not ever. what a beautiful love letter to the game. at some point, i considered making a similar doc, but you did it more justice than i ever could. it's an honour that i got mentioned even just for a few seconds, even if it's for enabling meta nerds 🤪
Thanks Emily can't tell you how much this means
you are a better piece of content😢

I met my husband through Geoguessr and the community. He (Sverre) appears at 18:07 streaming a coop game with Dragon and my name appears at 16:23 as Requiem on the Balkan Country Streak. I believe we are the first and only geoguessr marriage, so far anyway.
thats amazing
Happy for you 🙏 although jealous too
Wow, really happy for you! do the people at GeoGuessr know about this? They definitely owe you a nice dinner. Well, perhaps you owe them, but they have a motive to pay for it 😀
Wait, coral crew marriage?
HOLY SHIT you guys got married? That's insane. I used to love Sverre's streams
Grand sale grand sale
Absolutely gifted youtuber - Geography Challenges
That's you
Phenomenally well-researched and great production value! Thanks GC!
Thanks :torosalute:
hi toro
What a great video with so much info! Thanks for making it!
Thanks Peter thanks for all your work too
A very well made video showing how amazing GeoGuessr is, and what an amazing community we have. Cheers for all the effort of putting this all together GC :)
Thank you Harrier
Right hello again, fantastic video!
Thank you legend
Great video 🖖
Hope the NZ guess didn't scare you too much

Fantastic video! The documentary that this community deserves. Up there with Lupus' hedge streaking doc as the best vid produced about this game ❤
Thank you so much
Hands down the best YT video I have watched in 2024! well done GC
Thanks figsy
The name granis just brought me back so many years
🥲
He's back😊
This is gonna be genuinely such a helpful video for newcomers. Great summary, but also props for the pacing!
Discord notifications kept me on my toes the whole time. ;)
Thanks Hamfrags
Man getting Tom to do an Interview must have been a challenge with how overflowed his schedule and Emails are, props to you GC and what a great content piece about a Game I fell in love with while Pandemic.
Yep it was a great moment for me hearing he was down to do it
I think one of the best things about the geoguessr community is that every resource you can use to learn is available for free. You see in so many other games pros/creators make patreons/paid discords and basically put most of the knowledge behind a paywall but in geoguessr you can access everything and improve sm easier
there are relatively few who've been here for the whole ride and earned the "licence" to document the story of this movement and its many faces. so it is a privilege to be able to watch something so extensive, yet thorough and comprehensive, all compiled from the perspective of someone who's been there all along and STILL has the same passion for our game. and the quality! man this whole piece is just pure class GC. hope you're proud of yourself; congrats on a job incredibly well done. no notes fr
Thank you such a nice comment
what a great video, awesome job putting this together! 👏
Thanks Guessther
Amazing job. This is wo well put together, and thought out, along with crediting so many people, some of which I either have forgotten about, or were before my time as a regular in the community. I still remember where I got my start on this game, wayyy back in May of 2013. I played it so much for the first few months.....then dropped it, then came back to it maybe about 2016-17, then dropped it after a while, then it was sometime in 2020-2021 where I got into it full time. It is absolutely wild just in those 3 to 4 years of constant play, seeing how much the talent level at this game has risen. Unbelievable feats of three years ago, are now seen as only "pretty good" by todays standards. Makes me curious where this games standards will be in another 3 or 4 years.
Thanks canadagraphs always a pleasure
Absolutely incredible vid GC, I still remember the 2020 days when I couldn't believe how good you were. Thanks for being one of my biggest inspirations to grind this game 🐐
Thanks eamonn been a pleasure to get to know you and play tournies
Beautiful video. Made me feel like I’m a part of something bigger. Hats off!
Thanks! Means a lot as you clearly have a lot of experience making long form vids!
Brilliant video GC, really brought me down memory lane and to see how far the game has come. So many old members of the community who had a significant impact on the scene, such as Granis who personally just blew my mind back in the day with his ability. Definitely gets more competitive focused as the video goes on but I think that pretty accurately represents the focus of the game in modern times also.
Thanks AD your opinion means a lot - I think beyond a certain point the non-competitive stuff branches into so many different directions that it’s impossible to distill it down to a linear format, also just way too much stuff to mention
@@GeographyChallenges That's a good point and I think how you did it kept it more focused and engaging which is important.
The game was so simple years ago but it really broke into many aspects (some of which stopped getting updated/focused on), but the core of the game remains the same
Killer video, happy to see this kind of a thorough breakdown of one of the most unique games and communities I've stumbled across.
🥰

Such a fascinating video. Absolutely love it GC. Super intriguing.
Thanks BP
Very well produced. Didn't think it would rope me in like that but it was over in the blink of an eye.
Thanks, glad it was engaging
Pizzaguy will always be my Geoguessr GOAT. Also SubSymmetry and Granis of course, I wish they would still play the game. Nostalgic memories of being in the chat's when the first 100+ country streaks were made in 2019 (in reality Pizza and Sub did all the work, the rest of us were basically spectating).
Fantastic documentary, GC. It's very complete, can't imagine anyone that could make a better one on the history of Geoguessr
Thank you so much. It’s still difficult to fathom how good they were so early on in the game’s history
Thanks for documenting so much of the history! I've been around since the start and such fond memories!
Thanks Umo
This is incredible, GC! What a great homage to an amazing game. They need to link this on the Geo website.
Edit: This also gave me a huge sense of nostalgia for when I was first introduced to the game in 2020. It brought me back to playing with my online friends on Twitch streams and having a blast during the pandemic. This made my day and put me in such a great mood.
Thanks Amy your opinion means a lot!
I'm here a couple of days 'late' so everything I was going to say about this truly monumental video has already been said by many others. All I can really say is 'Wow'...! I cant imagine the amount of effort and planning this took. The interviews were incredible, the whole thing felt so polished and professional. The pacing and background music was top-notch too. You are truly THE only person in my opinion who could've done something like this justice, I'm proud to have supported you for a long time. 9k views in 3 days is staggeringly low for this quality - I really hope GeoWizard shouts out and links this video whenever he next plays Geoguessr, though I expect that'll be in a long time and he'd have innocently forgotten by then.
Funny anecdote/sidenote though... If you can believe this (I still struggle to!) my uncle basically 'invented' the concept of street view completely independently, just a few years before google funded the project at Stanford University. Sometime in the mid to late 1990's, my uncle made a photo clicking thing that moved down street/s in Beverley, East Yorkshire, as a university project while studying some sort of media at the University of Hull. Crazy right!! It really makes you think what other ideas from random uni projects throughout the decades have quite literally just gotten no interest apart from a grade, just due to them being ahead of their time...
Also, I wish a video like this could be made for the history of the entire technical minecraft community... though in this detail it'll probably be about a 10 hour video, it has a LOT more history than this due to it being almost constantly super active for 10 years, basically up until around now when most stuff/old players seems to have ground to a halt, though I'm sure there's other parts of the community that have started up which I don't know exist.
Thanks Nooti, I’m extremely grateful for your huge support over the years. I am worried this vid will just get buried now but it seems to have so many likes/comments for 9k views so I’m not sure why. Big people have said they’ll share it I’m just hoping that will happen
@@GeographyChallenges i hope itll happen too. big people dont always keep to their word but im hoping.
I feel like geoguessr has been waiting for a video essay like this. W
I feel privileged to be in a position to make it
10:44 I remember when this happened. I was so confused and pissed off about the changes with moving
absolutely insane video bro. probably one of the best geoguessr related videos anyones ever made.

This is a fantastic video and recap of everything that happened, great job!
Thank you Mr Blue
Thank you for this marvellous tribute to this amazing game. As a "young" Geoguessr player (starting in 2021), it gave me chills about these times I never knew. Must have been wonderful seeing the creation and the evolution of this concept.
So many people in this fantastic community dedicated themselves to the well-being of the game and its improvement, aswell as pushing themselves so far in competitions; you are all legends, thank you so much.
Such an honour to be mentionned in this masterpiece of a retrospective.
Love geography. Love this game.
It's all about fun, knowledge, and sheer curiosity for our world.
A bientôt dans le jeu.
Merci! A bientôt dans le jeu
This was incredible, thanks so much for putting it together!
Thanks Zach
This will be hailed as the Geoguessr Bible. Thank you.
Hope so 😄
That was great - thank you GC! Now I'm really revved up for the EMEA championship.
Thank you very much - hope you enjoy watching this weekend, sorry I couldn’t play better in the nmpz to qualify!
@@GeographyChallenges Next year! NMPZ is brutal…
Great vid! As someone who has been part of the community for several years, I'm glad to see how far the Geoguessr community has come. This is a beautiful hobby since people either think it's really cool or really weird, never anything in between
Well said
Thank you for giving the credit to Antoine Daniel. As you said, he organized and funded this first world cup on his own (GeoGuessR team said that they could give free mugs or smth) and then, after this very successful stream, GeoGuessR came up with their own world cup and had the nerve to call it the first one ...
The selflessness involved in the GTWC from Antoine and others in the French community was incredible, I could never let that go unmentioned ❤️
Amazing and insightful video, especially about the history of how the game was developed. Feel privileged to get a mention amongst so many other fantastic players and content creators, this video could have easily been 2-3 hours long but I think you hit the sweet spot covering all of the most historic moments.
It's difficult to conceive how the next 5 years looks for the game with just how much has changed since 2020 but hoping for even more opportunities for players to make some money for their investment into the game and scene. I'm calling it now, RC to be the first Red Bull sponsored player ;) - Sunkencity64
Thank you so much Ben ❤️
Loving it, this deserves views!
Thank you
Bro a couple weeks ago I couldnt for the life of me find the name of that guy who years back already could pinpoint random towns in Russia. Thank you for mentioning Granis🤙🏼The first absurdly OP player I found on CZcams. His and then your channel really illustrated to me how insane you can get with this game.
Also what a documentary💯🎯
It’s an honour to have seen him play
This is such a great video thanks GC 🐐

Amazing video. If Geowizard didn't pop into my youtube feed in 2016 I would've never had the interest of learning about different countries.

This video is incredible! You summarized perfectly the history of geoguessr in 40 minutes. I learned a lot of stuff I had no ideia from the past of the game. Thank you GC!
Thanks legend
Great documentary on the game's history. I'm glad to have been here for as long as I have been, 2019-21 GeoGuessr was a really fun small community and it's been awesome to see the game grow since. I just wish I hadn't burned out as much as I had in late 2020-early 2021, because I missed the massive boom around then.
Thanks and always great to hear from you. I also burned out during the boom but glad I managed to get back into the swing
Such a good video, lots of interesting details I didn't know. Great presentation too.
What a wonderful way to document the history and growth of GeoGuessr and the community! Well done GC🎉❤❤

I discovered the game thanks to french streamer Antoine Daniel, probably as many others. It feels very nice to see him being credited for being a part of Geoguessr history ! Thank you for the video :)
This was awesome. Best geoguessr video (I've seen) by a long shot. Obviously you put in a huge amount of time and it really payed off. I hope it will get the views it deserves. Very nicely done.
Awesome video! I'm only a casual Geoguessr player but I can really sense the parallels to the speedrunning community which I've been a part of for much longer, and it makes me so happy to see another flourishing global community.
I can see that for sure
tysm for this documentary, sure did bring back a lot of memories!
What an amazing documentary. Truly stuff for the Geoguessr history books :)
Great video! Fantastic even! A lot of things that I didnt know, especially the early stuff. Loved the balance between narration and well placed interviews. Cheers!
