  • We're back with some more addictive Travle, but this time we take it up a few notches.
Travle is a game that tests your border knowledge by asking you to travel from one country to another in the shortest route possible, i.e. through the least amount of countries. Sometimes the shortest route is not the one that you thought it would be...
Here are the links to today's games just incase you want to give them a go before I do!

This game teaches you some things I call “pipelines”. There are the essential ones that you are forced to take, like Egypt to Israel (then usually Syria, Turkey…depending)
But there are also the quickest route “pipelines” that come up over and over like Russia-Norway-Denmark-Germany for Asia to (north) west Europe. This video made me see that there is an equally fast “pipeline” via Russia-Belarus/Ukraine-Poland-Germany!
Also Niger is a huge asset in many cases for getting to so many of the small countries of coastal West Africa. And Mali is usually the next step (except you have to go Burkina Faso instead for Ghana and Togo)
These pipelines are nearly-trivial knowledge, but a fun concept to have built up knowledge for me 😄

    • @ZekeBittersweet

@@durabelle welp it shows you the shape of a country and you have to guess it. If you don’t attempt to commit it to memory or try on the first guess, you won’t gain much. I just found that format to complement Travle perfectly, specifically for learning shapes (the thing you wondered how he is good at)
Travle is also a 1 a day thing, so I’d assume you would easily play one immediately after the other like I do, but idk. Maybe if you only play Travle like you have been for a few days, you’ll also start to recognize shapes after seeing them a few times 🤷‍♂️

since you recorded that there now was an update so that the order matters! :) Makes it a bit harder.
Also you should have a look at the FAQ of travle, they listed why some oversea routes count and some don't. They technically count everything that has a bridge or tunnel (which is why denmark and sweden are connected, also France and england). They usually don't allow exclaves, but made an exception for Northern Ireland so that Ireland is also a possibility. But Kaliningrad, French Guyana etc don't count. Of course with indonesia and malaysia they count all islands, so that these can be used. And they also have some countries that are not recognized by most other countries, like Somaliland.

    • @theREALhillshum
      @theREALhillshum Před měsícem

With Northern Ireland, hopping between unconnected parts of the same country works so long as that route doesn't take you any closer to any other country. That includes hopping the Irish sea and the islands of Malaysia and Indonesia. Because going from Kaliningrad to Russia proper does pass closer to other countries, that route isn't allowed.

Mongolia indeed doesn't border Kazachstan, there's a 20km stretch of Russo-Chinese border in between the two

10:40 @Geowizard you can connect countries / counties if there is a transport link connecting them. EG channel tunnel for UK - France, Bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden, Edinburgh and Fife (for the UK Counties one) etc

Equatorial Guinea to Korea has a fascinating back story. The first dictator of Equatorial Guinea sent his daughter to North Korea and abandoned her there

They share having some of the worst human rights records and crazy cults of personality. Among company, Macías is somehow easily the most bonkers leader out of the lot. He at one point described himself as a "Hitlerian-Marxist". He also defenestrated his foreign minister, banned Western medicine and outlawed Christianity - because the previous regime of priests thanking the president before God and displaying a portrait of him didn't go far enough. Statisticians were repressed, probably because the statistics didn't show the country on that great of a path, and the director of the Institute of Statistics was dismembered. Similar to Pol Pot, he displayed a rather heavy disdain for glasses-wearers.

I'm sort of annoyed that the shortest route isn't the one you have to guess. it's the route with the fewest countries.

I wonder if any route through Africa would work for the Ireland-Timor-Leste... Since Algeria and Libya are so big, it feels like that could make the trip horizontally take fewer countries than going through Europe's smaller countries. Though I guess the key is just that Russia is such a useful bridge between Europe and east asia to then connect to the mandatory Indonesia. If only it counted something like Gibraltar for the UK lol

Shame they don't count Kaliningrad. Oh this would be a tricky marvel if they had all the special nooks and crannies. Go UK->Spain via Gibraltar, to Morocco via Ceuta, and so on. Or through French Overseas Departments.
