Good advice:)! I was hung up once and don’t know how I got out of it. I was dragged over a rocky cow pasture. Survived that. Came off of a marathon cart when a big Dutch warm blood lost his mind. I was navigating and I tried to hang on till the bitter end. So I found myself being dragged along some nice soft grass and planned my departure so that I wouldn’t get an arm taken off or crushed. I wanted to make sure the roll away was correct and it was. Survived that one too. I also survived a recent swan dive out of a cart being pulled by another much smaller equine that lost his mind. Hard crushed stone landing platform so road rash is my badge of dishonour lol. I survived that too, obviously, but I’m thinking about this dangerous life I lead and I just can’t get around to giving it all up. I’ll be 66 this July! I shouldn’t have made it past 12! I think that’s called borrowed time? It’s important to talk about the wrecks because folks learn from experiences others have had and live to tell the tale. I have a safety vest hanging above my saddle that I never wear. I’m rethinking the utility of that vest.

Hey that’s me! And if anybody out there has been in enough wrecks they can keep their wit about them, kickin your spur on the hung foot usually pops your boot right off ya, it’s what got me free in New Mexico!

Safetystirrups, i got hang up because the band went over the saddle, horse bolted and kicked me several times in the head. Couldnt roll was K.O. but hee, I survived somehow and still riding today.

I think it was Les Voigt, had a wreck going down the fence in cowhorse and got hung up, wore a boot one size bigger when riding after that, so if you get hung up it comes out of the boot easy.
I did the same when I rode saddle broncs.

you know they teach you stop drop and roll from kindergarten but every time I have ever bought fire ( more often than most folks) I scream and run and panic and my brother chases me down (luckily im slow) and tackles me.

My advice would be to wear boots with a large riding heel (so your foot isn't as likely to go all the way through the stirrup) that are one size too big. They are hell to walk in so don't get thrown away from home. I wear Olathe high tops with a big riding heel and spur shelf. Also use stirrups that aren't too big nor too small for your boots. I think it also helps not to get hung up if you have leather boot bottoms. I've heard that when you roll you should roll toward the horse not away like your instincts would tell you to do. That's one thing that hasn't ever happened to me. I've done just about everything in my BVD's except that. I've seen it happen to others wearing the really kool low heel ropers (typical team roper attire). Doesn't look so kool being dragged like a rag doll though in front of God and everybody. I saw it happen to a wanna be a team roper once, wasn't pretty. Did an entire lap around the arena parading in front of everyone. Came out of it unscathed but humiliated. Looked rather humbled. Get a heel on it.
Great advice, but not fool proof. A good heel and leather soles help a bunch but being clear headed and relaxed will save your life.
Great video. I've also seen some bad hang ups from riding in too large or small of stirrups and from broken or missing stirrup keepers letting the stirrup turn as the rider came loose. It happens. Good advice. I've got a question. What are the cinch sizes you use the most? I'm trying to get a wider variety since im riding a lot more horses of different sizes and its hard to know without measuring each and every one. When i get over there i ride and need to have a good selection right there. Thank you for the help! Have a nice day!
I ride a 28-29 on almost everything and I have a 30 for really large horses and an 18 for really tiny ones. A 28 will fit the vast majority. I need to do a video on this because most people dont really understand the cinch

There are stirrup guards to prevent this. Check them out.
I have never seen a product that will actually prevent a hang up in all instances. Anyway this is a discussion about thinking more than anything. Thank you anyway for the suggestion

I'm less worried about a foot in the stirrup than a spur and boot hung up in the coils of my rope. I had our Vet give me hell for hanging my rope off the horn with a ready size loop. Guess it stuck with me.

I'd say have some good riding heels. And tapaderos.
Both help for sure but they dont prevent all hang ups. Being clear minded is the best tool you can have.
What is your thought about a kerb chain myself I do not use one my wife and people she rides with use kerb chain I do not like them thank u
Rather tha a leather curb? I prefer a leather curb for sure but a chain has its place. A big wide chain can actually be more comfortable for some horses rather than a thin piece of leather. Most of the time though a chain shows the horse was rushed. I am assuming you are not talking about no curb at all, if it is a curb bit you must have something chain or leather or silk string but it needs something.

She likes to start a colt every year. That is her choice. Her personal horse is as broke as they come, she made him herself. As far as helmets are concerned I have nothing against them but if your learned to ride without them then adding them later is very dangerous.

I'm not sure how riding with a helmet could be more dangerous than without...All the doctors, nurses, and Emergency Med. techs I've ever spoken to say otherwise..perhaps you can tell me something new ?
As for breaking colts : I've trained many over the last 50 years and, if I start them a certain way, and I'm patient and don't mount up till they are ready to actually be ridden, then they don't buck. Does your wife know about slowly getting them used to wearing a saddle and girth ? Does she introduce dorsal pressure and weight over time and then just lean on them on her stomach until they clearly know what she wants and are voluntarily giving it ?
I train horses, I don't "break" them.
I figure if I don't have time to do it properly and make the horse safe to ride then I've no business doing it at all.... ain't fair to the horse, and ain't fair to the other people who might buy or ride that horse.
A friend of mine bought a pinto from a trainer who said this small horse was kid safe...ot bucked so hard it nearly killed the first person (an experienced rider) who got on it. That's not right what that seller did is it ?
@@arielporte4149 No that isn't right what that seller did at all. Yes my wife is very good at stating colts and usually has no problems, over the years she has had some buck around a little just like everyone. I dont care how methodical one is any colt starter is dealing with a separate individual with a separate agenda and sometimes colts buck. My wife is a very good rider and never gives up and consequently if she gets bucked off she hangs a toe for a jump or two. In truth the comment was more of a joke than anything and in fact it was a joke she told me to say. Anyway wrecks happen.
In terms of a helmet here are my thoughts. About the time I got my PRCA card riding bulls helmets started getting popular. A lot of guys went to trying out the prototypes that were coming out and got into really bad wrecks they would never have been in had it not been for the helmet because the weight and balance was changed and the vision restrictions that they produce. I was all about them but never saw one that was not restrictive and would not get you killed like literally rip your head off under certain conditions. They have good ones now and all the bull riders you see now learned to ride in helmets that are safe so they are not restricted by the vision or the weight and balance. The same goes for horse riding helmets, I have yet to see one that won't get you hurt way worse than a concussion under certain rare but possible conditions. With that said I dont point and laugh at helmets and I support people that use them especially if the helmet gives the rider greater confidence, however, they do still change the riders visual capacity and weight and balance so the rider must learn to ride with one. Young riders that have never ridden without them are fine, they dont know any different but older riders are doing themselves a disfavor putting one on to ride ride a colt if they do not practice riding a gentle horses. Further putting a helmet on to ride a colt as a safety measure is the same as preparing to fail, further still if one hangs a foot a wack to the head is the least of your worries because the rest of your body that is far more vulnerable is exposed. Remember the good Lord designed our heads to take a wacking but other parts of our body are not made that way. In the end I like my whiskey straight and others like it with ice and coke but both produce the same effect. Have a good one and thanks for the comment.
@@arielporte4149 I had a 3 yr old filly that I'd been riding for 18 months. She was started by someone else, but never offered a hump up or a kickout, nothing. I warmed her up one morning as I always do, made one run, got off to adjust a panel, got back on and away we went trying to imitate the best bronc performance you could muster up. That was out of the blue. It happens.
Pull your sidearm, shoot the horse and hope it drops in a fashion where it don't break your leg or worse.
