How to clean a hot tub the right way

  • In this video, I'm going to another customer maintenance job, but this time it's to clean their hot tub. To start, the first step is to empty the pool using a submersible pump. There is no better solution to draining a pool than a submersible pump.
While the tub is draining, it's critical to scrub the entire surface of the pool, I used PoolPartsToGo (www.poolparstogo.com) 360-Degree Pool Brush. I used the 12" one for this since the hot tub has a lot of nooks and crannies to get into that a normal brush can't get to, poolpartstogo.com/collections... .
The submersible pump gets almost everything out, there were some little leaves and a tiny bit of remaining water, I used the vacuum to hoover it all up.
Once the hot tub was 100% empty, I filled up a bucket of fresh water and put some cleaning solution in it and scrubbed the whole pool. After that, I rinse the pool, give it another scrub with the 360-Brush, using the versatile 12" again. If it were a large pool, would probably use the 18". (another quick submersible pump session).
We clean the filter by hosing it down until it's totally clean.
Then we fill the pool up and turn the pool systems back on to make sure the water is circulating correctly. PH was a little bit high on the hot tub so I put in pH- to regulate it.

This is the right way to clean a hot tub but an important step missed.
You didn't clean the internal pipes or pumps? That's where all the gross stuff is, you have to pull the filters add a pipe and pump cleaner then run the tub for hours if you can 24 hours to get all the build up out of the plumbing system.

Apply a few drops of Dawn dish soap to the water before you drain the spa. I then wash the spa with white vinegar and Dawn. Run pump for about 20 minutes, drain and rinse thoroughly.
I’m 75 years old now, so I hire the people who bought my pool and spa cleaning business (I trained them) when I sold the business we had over 850 weekly clients and most were with us for 30 years.

It’d be nice if you could comment on the chemicals and how much chlorine and shock to use. I never know if I’m using too much or too little. Or also when is the right time to replace the filter versus just hosing it down. Great job though mate! I Hope to see more

i personally dont use soap because of the suds. i suggest using a strong vinegar spray in a gardening bottle. a pond ready sump pump also works to help empty. non-phosphate poweder dish soap is good for soaking and spraying down filters in a five gal bucket, i just let them sit overnight to loosen debris thanks for the video very helpful.

However, when I switch it back on lots of (presumably) cal build up from the pipes...it looks disgusting and looks like bits of grated cheese. That only happens when I switch the pumps on after I refilled it with fresh water. As a result I need to start all over again. Such a waste of water. How do I avoid it ? As it seems I can never get the pipes fully clean when I switch it off for a period of time

And in Aus we always have to increase the Alkalinity and ph from the tap water, as for the chlorine there shouldn’t be a reading from the tap water, the chlorine levels should dissipate in the hours after adding the chlorine which should be done daily to kill any bacteria and for ph/alkalinity should be tested and adjusted weekly.
