As soon as I saw the limited access to that retaining clip, I'd be racing for my Rotozip with a ceramic bit to open that hole a tad bit more, rather than risk losing that clip. Good thing you had a spare clip!

Pro tip - Do not push on the brass stem. Push it in using the tool or by pushing on the plastic tabs. Otherwise, you will push the stem out of the housing and have a leaky faucet.

Thank you for posting this video. I watched the first part and it helped me get my 1222 replaced easily. I just came back and watched the rest, including you dropping the retaining pin down the wall. I was deathly afraid of this since it was a tight space like yours, so I tied a couple of feet of fishing line through the top hole on the pin, and tied the other end around my wrist. I see Brandonbuilt has a different way to solve this problem, too.

Just replaced my 10 year old 1222 cartridge because the handle stopped turning. Removal was extraordinarily difficult even with the removal tool. Could get the cartridge to turn about 1/4” right and left and that’s it. Eventually using a ton of force got it out in one piece. …. Spent a good hour cleaning mineral buildup out the inside of the brass pipe and hot water inlet opening…. Reinsertion was just as difficult. Everything was well lubed, but only would go in about 1/2 way. Had to get my son to hold a wood board via access panel against the back of the large brass 4 way fitting while I pushed with probably 100lbs of force using the tool. Then it still wouldn’t go in the last 1/4”. Finally got it in all the way by putting a piece of wood on top of the tool and hitting it a few times with a rubber mallet. It works great and anticipate it lasting another 10 years, but I dread the day it needs to come out again because that thing is jammed in there good….
Seems like a really bad design for what is otherwise a decent idea with these cartridges..??
Also the retention clip seems like a bad joke and completely unnecessary…there is no way that cartridge is coming out without brute force

  • @easterlake
    @easterlake Před 10 měsíci +2

10 years of calcium build up around the cartridge essentially welded it in.
Old cartridge broke and I had to drill/chisel it out. That plus cleaning all of the calcium took and extra hour or so.
I thought breaking the old one out might compromise the inside of the brass but Ive had it back together for a couple hours and it's still drip free.
It might be very beneficial to pull the new cartridge out every year or so to clean and re-grease it.
This might prevent it from seizing up again. It'd only take 5 minutes.

I just removed a 1222 cartridge. First time for me. It was really stuck. I'm not sure if an after market cartridge was used by the plumber.
    I tried slip joint pliers:
Twisted it from side to side using long nose pliers.
    Vinegar and WD40
It partially came out then stopped.
I went and bought an off brand puller. I thought this is going to be easy now. Nope.
    It wouldn't pull out.
It finally snapped. Lucky it was partially out.
I broke the plastic with a flat head screwdriver and pulled pieces out with long nose pliers.
Some rubber from the cartridge was really sticking. This portion of the removal was quite easy. I made sure all the plastic was out.
Now I've got a puller tool that I'll probably never use again.

I used the puller both to remove the old cartridge and to install the new one. I couldn't get it far enough in otherwise. You might also remove it and check the valve body for anything blocking the cartridge. I used the included lubricant on all rubber parts and also smeared it around the inside of the valve.

My shower is not difficult at all to turn on/ off or change mix but there is more rushing water noise when set to 50/50 mix which calms down if I mix left or right. Is the noise an indication of a failing cartridge. Again the actual function of the faucet is not impeded.

MOEN should be ashamed of it cartridge... Mine only lasts three years and it starts dripping water already. I have seen so many cartridge replacement videos and complaints about that cartridge won't last more than a few years. If I know that, I wouldn't be using MOEN shower faucets when I renovated my bathroom. That little piece of plastic cartridge costs $45.00US on average to replace it yourself... if you hire a plumber to do it, then you will be paying about $300.00. Thanks for sharing your video.

That really sucks. I know parts aren't made as well anymore. I work in a 22 year old building sometimes, and some of these cartridges have been holding up since the build. I know they are the original because I've had to buy a dedicated cartridge puller to get them out because of the water scale sealing them in there.

There are lots of different set ups. From the water heater and cold water supply it usually enters a mixing valve and then into the manifold at the shower/bathtub. There's so many scenarios so its very difficult to give you the correct answer without a plumbing diagram of your home.

Great video but it's kinda scary knowing that these cartridges aren't built to last. Even on Moen's website there only 2.5 stars because they don't last. Mine was installed in 1999 when we built our house and the only problem I'm having is the handle is very hard to turn. I don't know what's gonna be worse, the longevity of the cartridge or the battle it's gonna take removing the old one.
