A good trick is to completely flux cover the whole piece before soldering. Dramatically reduces firescaling and having it turn black. Lovely work. Thanks for sharing.

Nice video good job with your etching! The rocker you may have a better time of it if you turn it so the rocker goes from bottom to top of the cup. Holding it sideways like that is the reason it keeps slipping onto your stone. Just a little observation from a fellow jewelry maker. Beautiful bracelets!

kim johnston Hi! This wire I used for these cuffs is 8ga half round wire.
I joined a jewelry making face book group. I learned that the bezel must be pushed from the corners first. Do opposite sides first. I find serrated or saw tooth bezel lifts easily and catches on clothes
Nice cuffs! I have a question. When setting the stones, I was always taught to do them in opposite sides (I.e., north south east and then west and then in between each of the sides. I noticed that you didn’t do that. Don’t you ever get overlapping or crinkled bezels? I’m definitely not an expert by any means, but I’m learning and wanted to ask about your process. Thank you. ♥️
Great question, thanks for asking! You can do it either way. I usually just go all the way around with a serrated or scalloped bezel and do NSEW with plain bezel. I think the whole point of NSEW is so your stone stays in place while setting it. You also only get crinkles when the bezel isn’t the appropriate height for the stone. Hope this helps!

Paisley Nelson Yes! Thanks for clarifying. I use dremel with an attachment so I got confused for a sec! The attachments are a type of grinding/sanding wheel. They have different coarseness. I used medium ones but it’s all based on preference.

An epoxy resin is a strong bond. Not sure if it’s waterproof though.

How do we know what to purchase? I mean you said rio but I can’t see what silver is it hard, half hard or soft?
Hi there are so many options in purchasing bezel wire for each of the item #'s you are using, so as a beginner which size of bezel to purchase??

Purchasing bezel wire all depends on the height of the stone. I would recommend purchasing a small amount of each size to test out which you feel most comfortable with. A foot of bezel wire cost a couple dollars. I use 1/8” or 3/16” depending on the bezel height. You can always sand the bezel wire if it’s too tall for the stone.

Also do you file the wire at all so it’s flat where it’s positioned on the plate? I thought this was supposed to be done in order for the solder to flow.
Julia Chick Hi! I am using a large map gas torch. Since there’s a lot of metal you need a higher temp. I do not file the the wire flat but you certainly can. The metal just has to be touching for it to flow.
Thank you for your tutorial! I am making my first cuff and I'm having issues soldering it to my gemstone setting. Do you ever need to file the cuff flat to make a better surface connection? Would sweat soldering help at all?
Hi! You’re welcome, hope it helped! You can definitely file/sand the cuff to make it flatter for a better connection. You can also try sweat soldering too. I typically use sweat soldering when adding sterling elements to a piece but I’m sure it would work to attach the cuff to the backplate.

Hey there!! Trying so hard haha it seems by bezel wire is really flimsy and giving me troubles when I try to keep it connected before soldering. I’m using item 100290 strip SS .013 x 3/16 any advice?!
Hi! Thanks for reaching out. My advise for trying to keep it connected would be to make sure you file both sides down so they fit together right. You can always bend the bezel wire into a different shape to get them to fit. Once you solder it’s easy to bend it back to fit the stones. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I would start with 22 or 24ga. 24ga is fine for all projects and it’s less expensive. I normally used 24ga for rings and cuffs.

I’m using alligator tape from Riogrande.com. It’s great to use when the metal gets too hot.

@@samanthakane694 They are silicone sanding wheels. There is a variety of coarseness to choose from. I believe I’m using a medium one in this video but it really just depends on your personal preference.
Will this work with a blow torch? I have the Durston blow torch.
I’m not familiar with a blow torch. Anything with an adjustable flame should work though. You don’t want it to get too hot cause it will melt the metal.
I know this video is older but it’s worth a shot to ask. Before you solder the backplate on the cuff, do you file the cuff flat where you are going to attach the backplate like you would a ring or leave it 1/2 round?

Great video , question: when you quench after soldering , why not just quench in pickle?
You could. I just like to inspect the piece before I pickle to see if I need to adjust anything.

Where do you get your turquoise and shears! Those are great. I'm in canada :) great tutorials :) also is there a guage of sheet for backing that I can use with a brule torch because I don't have a heavy torch.
Urban Bohemian Living I find most my turquoise online or at local shows. The shears are from Amazon. I would recommend 24ga.
If you set your stones ON a surface (Thermolock or other holding medium on a block of wood/metal set in a vise, etc...), you won't risk chipping or slipping - as much, etc. "air setting" is as useless as "air filing". Yikes, watching you set stones gives me anxiety! They are pretty, thank you for sharing your process.

Lena Hoover Hi, thanks! Yes I only use the smaller torch for soldering bezels. It doesn’t get hot enough to solder a bezel on a back plate.

When I sand and file my bezel wire to get shorter, my bezel wire always folds and crinkles because it’s so thin. Do you have recommendations to ensure it doesn’t lose shape? I’m not pressing hard either. Yours seems thicker than mine. Do you have a link for the bezel wire you purchase from Rio? I know they come in different heights but do they come in different gauges?
Arianna Khaira I typically use 28ga bezel wire. 30ga works also. If you go too thick then it’s hard to shape around the stone.

Yes, you can also use a non name brand one too. They sell less expensive hand tools at Harbor Freight.

This may be a silly question but what do you do when you “quench and pickle”?
Sadie Ritter Quench is cooling down the piece in water. Pickle is a solution used to get fire scale off the piece.
Can you use epoxy to reglue the stone?
Bodiedbyt You could glue the stone depending on the break. I personally wouldn’t glue the stone if I was selling the piece.

You can glue the stone. I haven’t tried it though so I’m not sure what glue to use to make it seamless. I sell my jewelry so that’s why I chose to pick a new stone and not glue it. You could also recreate the bezel and back plate with a new stone but I was fortunate enough to have a stone that fit the existing bezel.

Hi again ! I tried this & I wasnt successful with soldering on the bezel cup to the bracelet .. any tips would be awesome! :)
Make sure to heat the whole piece up first, then focus the heat on the solder. Make sure the piece is fully fluxed too.
What gauge is the sterling wire you use?
These were made with 10ga but I’ve used 12 on other bracelets.

One more question 🙈 I was a t a work shop and made copper bangles, but I want to add some of my stones to them. Can you make a bezel with copper and solder it to the bracelets ? Or does that only work with silver ?
Absolutely! Many people use mixed metal when creating pieces. Silver solder will work but of you want more of a gold look you can used copper solder.
