SILVER BEZEL for cabochon STEP BY STEP with list of tools. How to make a bezel setting.

  • Today I will show you how I make a silver bezel setting for cabochon using jewelry metalsmithing tools and small butane hand torch! I will share step by step how I shape, cut, sand and solder the bezel using sterling and fine silver. This video includes a list of BASIC tools that you will need - it's not extensive and additional tools could be very useful, like mitre jig.
    I’m not a professionally trained jeweller or a goldsmith. I’m learning myself and today I wanted to share one way of how I do things! I’m not claiming that I “know it all” nor that my way is the only right way. I hope you can approach this video keeping that in mind. And hopefully I was able to help some of you or at least provide entertainment! 😊

    Hiya Lady Stardust, wow, 169 comments on this video! Okay, some are you, okay and me, but person after person saying, thank you for a wonderful video. A wonderful help for starters on this journey. Well over a hundred people all learning to be jewellery makers, it says a lot for this profession that so many people can design and want to learn. These are just the learners fortunate enough to have found you who decided to comment. 55,454 people have watched this lesson, how many have learned from you? A lot of us I would say!
    Stay safe, Steve...

    ".....or a chair..."! I LOVE her!!! Every new (and older) channel re-invents the wheel: ("How to make a bezel.........zzzzzzzz."). BUT (!!) I must say, this was the most entertaining, spot-on - LOVE the comments of insecurity - video of said wheel reinvention. It's a REAL experience! Basia kicks butt with her little torch (I love the big sigh she breathes when describing her torch limitations). I wish this was the first one I ever watched when I was learning that project first. Basia is a fantastic teacher, so approachable, encouraging, it's like she's got her cheerleading uniform on complete with pom-poms, rooting for the watchers/students' success! Her video is truly fun, and delightfully (and refreshingly) humble. Who doesn't love that in a teacher and guide?

    hiya flower good one again, I started of with one of those little torches I was forever filling them with gas costing a fortune, I saved my pennies up for quite some time then I invested in the eze torch or orca as its called uses propane, 25ltr bottle I think it was about £23 but lasts for ages, you do not need any oxygen with it as you mix it on the torch think its ambient air or something , when I was using one of those small torches I think I got about 3/4 bezels done then ran out of gas half way through another made me sick, I think the torch was just over a $100 when I got mine but I highly recommend it, for someone just starting out its cheaper than the little torch set up or if your on a tight budget, those small tins of propane gas 3,4,5,£ per tin depending where you live fills the torch 3/4 times or you forgot to replace and run out half way through a project and the shop is shut arrgg, take care keep well keep safe very much look forward to your next vlog.

      I AGREE! I've heard that the Orca/EZ torch is the most common/used torch around the world for just those great reasons you mentioned. Simple and great price. I have yet to use my Smith Little (given to me by a retiring jeweler), love my simple (Smith Silversmith - similar to Orca and far less expensive...) torch.

      oh no, that must've been painful... But without it you wouldn't learn and I know that now you'll know exactly how to improve and avoid melting it again in the future :) I'm glad you find my video helpful too, thank you! Wishing you all the best ❤

    Thanks so much for making this video Basia - I’m soon to make a similarly large bezel ring. Would using a tripod and heating underneath (and of course a bit on top) be another way to help the solder flow and prevent any accidental melting of the bezel 🤪
    Also, do I use hard solder for this? Your feedback will be really appreciated. Thank you 🥰

    Hi, I first wanted to thank you for the video, I reckon it will help me a lot!! But I was wondering, would this method work for an epoxy resin pendant in which I want both sides to be visible??

    Thanks for all yours video... do you think is total wrong to use a drop of glue to block the gem to the bezel ?

    Thanks so much for sharing this video! Very inspiring and educational. I was wondering if you would be willing to do a video on making a pendant with an open back? I have not been able to find a video on how to do that and those are my favorite types of pendants when the stone is exposed in the front as well as back. :)

    Hiya Lady Stardust, very good video, again, thank you... I have the same problem as you being in a rented flat & unable to use a large or mixed gas torch. What I've done is get the larger version of my small torch from Cooksongold, the one Andrew has on his bench. It's small enough not to be a problem with my landlord... But big enough to take over when my small one has run out of heat... Worth trying? Stay safe... Steve...

    Thank you so much. I absolutely love your videos. I haven’t officially started soldering, but I’m gathering info and supplies. What are your thoughts on the paste solder that comes in the syringe with flux in it? I feel confused about the type of solder to use! Any info would be so appreciated 🙏

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi! Thanks so much for watching and your comment ❤️ he paste is great, but definitely for small elements. It wont replace the traditional solder. I tried experimenting, and know for sure that it's a waste and it just doesn't work as well. But it's amazing for little balls, flowers and any small elements! :)) So definitely get the regular solder, for example the wire one or sheet, that you can cut into small pieces and use with the flux. And you can also get a paste for these small elements :)

      You use pickle which is a mild acid to clean it.
