Did you guys like Knives Out?
So many great movies last year and this is one of my favourites. So glad you reacted to it AND that you enjoyed it. That said, you have excellent taste so... :D
Love this movie and I love the fact you pointed out the shot composition and the production design just five minutes into your commentary, Keep it up! I hope you upload a commentary on predestination or the hunt for the wilderpeople. Oh btw, they are planning a sequel for Knives Out!
Absolutely!
It is Great as it is with Daniel Craig or should I say James bond in it
I absolutely adore this movie! It was one of my favorites from last year. I loved all the crazy characters, and I especially loved seeing Chris Evans get to play a bad guy. Everyone looked liked they were having so much fun in this movie, especially him.
the rich family members all had different politcal views, conservative, liberal, etc, but the second their money was threatened? every single one of them turned on her.
One of the things I love in the movie tbh.
r/enlightenedcentrism
And I think that is very intentional as a political portrait of out time. The characters should not be read as characters so much as social circles with the protagonist representing a multi racial working class. The movie is very marxist in a sense. It thouroughly rejects the gifts of the family (standing for "you can make it to the middle class if you work hard" liberalism or barely sufficient social democratic wellfare) as insufficient pity. Notice that the family was not willing to actually take the protagonist into their social circle at the funeral but would rather fend her off with an amount of money that because of the class divide is insignificant to them and live saving for her. Instead of that the movie goes to a place hollywood movies rarely do: The capital. And it symbolically places the entire capital in the workers hands.
I think it is beautyfull how this movie tells a compelling story character wise on one level, reflects about the medium on another and comprehensivly analyses politics on a third.
The ruling class in a nutshell!
I really like that. This movie is acknowledging that there are jerks on both sides of the political spectrum, not just one like so many other movies/shows do.
I think daniel craig's accent is intentionally exagerated. He was having fun with his character. I love that
Its halirously terrible 😅😅😅😅 his accent is like a caricature
I think it was based off another murder mystery film character. New Rockstars made a great breakdown of the movie.
He clearly had a blast while making this movie.
He's going to be back in the sequel with a completely different accent.
Y’all are gonna have to watch Logan Lucky, he does an even funnier southern accent in that movie
I love how goofy Ransom attacking Marta with a fake knife is, but it's set up brilliantly earlier when Harlan says Ransom doesn't know the difference between real and a fake knife
He was talking about all of them, they wouldn't be able to tell the difference because they are all so fake.
This also plays into Marta with the medicines. She knew which medicine was the morphine even with the switched labels because she cares enough to know the difference between a fake "knife" and the real thing.
I actually didn't even notice until this review how Blanc kept repeating the phrase "something is afoot" as a hint about the drop of blood on Marta's shoe.
The real knife harlan uses and the fake knife ransom uses are symbols showing the quality of the characters intentions. Harlan recognizes the humanity of Marta and he is able to use a real knife to commit suicide, and ransom, treating life like a game and using marta as a prop to get what he wants, mistakenly tries to stab marta with the prop knife. Honestly this movies provides some really great socio-political commentary while also being probably the most well written and entertaining murder mystery blockbuster of the past decade. So excited for the sequel!
I LOVE THAT!
The movie starts with the mug says "My house, My rules, My coffee" it also ends with the mug.
and marta's holding it in the end lmao!
And she's holding it in the last shot so all you see is "My house"
it should be better if the mug somehow broke and ends with, "my house, my rules"
there are so many full circles in this movie and it’s perfect
Chris Evans and the ICONIC sweater💯
That look 👌🏼
@@nicsandnacs I read somewhere, or maybe it was an interview with Rian Johnson, that they intentionally put Ransom in clothes that were slightly tattered, particularly the white cable knit sweater, to show that he is the kind of guy who has expensive things but doesn't bother to take care of them. I think this is an ingenious and subtle way to show him as someone who doesn't respect or appreciate the privilege he's been living off of his entire life. His indifference to his sweater is a mirror of his same attitude towards his family. I love that someone spent a lot of time and effort on such a tiny detail that conveys so much meaning.
Clothes in this film is very key...
It’s like Honest Trailers said, the family are the heirs to the sweater fortune.
“There is so much of me in that kid: confident, stupid, protected. Playing life like a game without consequences. Until you can’t tell the difference between a stage prop and a real knife.” - Harlan on Ransom
So good.
Don't forget that foreshadows the knife he picks up being a fake knife.
9:40 I live in Georgia. Daniel Craig's accent is a little exaggerated, but in my opinion it just adds to the over the top nature of the character. So I didn't mind it.
Thought it was a Kentucky accent
It’s a Louisiana accent
I think Rian Johnson sad in an interview that they wanted to be funny, and for the record Craig was involved in many comedic project in Britain before he got famous.
It's still a Southern accent though, just a different variation of it.
It's not a Georgian accent, that's why you think it's exaggerated. His name is Benoit, that's a southern Louisiana accent to a tee.
13:30 Fun fact: the camera turning handheld happened by accident. Part of the equipment broke, but it still worked so well, so it was kept.
One of my favorite things in this movie (that wasn’t really showcased in this video) was how Linda found out about the affair.
Spoilers below.
When Richard is looking for the letter that reveals his affair, he throws a baseball out the window. Blanc then picks it up. Later, he trades with the dog so he can see the piece of roof it has. The dog is seen with the ball a lot later, and eventually, Linda takes the ball from it and puts it back. In doing so, she finds the letter.
So basically, Richard set up his own downfall just by throwing that ball!!! AWESOME writing and filmmaking!!!!!
I didn’t even notice. I love little set up details like this!
That IS awesome. I hadn't noticed that. Fortunately, I'm planning on re-watching it this weekend.
She would not have found out if her husband had not thrown the baseball out the window earlier in the movie.
I agree! I also love how in the beginning she said she got along with her father by playing his game and by playing by his rules, and she only finds out about the affair by burning the other side of the page to reveal the message because she knew her father and knew how to play his game.
Nice find!
I LOVED this movie. The story, the cast, the acting, the twist, the set design, the directing, the script, the payoff! UGH! More people need to appreciate this movie!!!!
I remembered what Harlan said about Ransom, “He plays life like it’s a game without consequences until you can no longer tell the difference between a stage prop and a real knife.” Brilliant foreshadowing!
The movie was an homage to Agatha Christie novels. Wish it came out before Evans was Captain America; wouldn’t have figured it was him as the culprit so early. The how still eluded me though
It’s crazy to see someone as pure of heart as Captain America be such a jerk, especially since- from what I’ve heard- he’s a sweetheart in real life too.
Those over ripe bananas are plantains. :) The darker and more over ripe they look, the sweeter they are. Glad you enjoyed the movie!!
Finally
Why put them on the table tho, are they cooking. It should be in the storage on the floor 🤣 I thought it was a banana too
And if they are bananas, they’ll be great for banana bread
@@specificsoup and cake!
That's so weird in most African countries you eat plantains unripe thus green.
Yellow they're overripe and black they are toxic.
Never heard of eating plantain like this.
Can I just say how much I appreciate you calling out the little details? You're very perceptive and obviously knowledgable about filmmaking and it just really helps make the reactions more meaningful. It really makes me appreciate the movies themselves more.
This movie was snubbed of many awards. I loved this movie so much. Such a great screenplay, amazing production design, excellent cinematography and wonderful performances.
Edit: Notice the details in the movie. Like Harlan's changing expressions in portraits, Ransom wouldn't know the difference between Real and a fake knife etc
What would you not have nominated instead?
Appreciation for Ana in this film. She came in and held her own with these biiiig time actors and was said so much with just a look. She was fantastic.
I hereby find the defendant “Knives Out” guilty for being too star-studded, too twisty, and devilishly too much damn fun. To my complete bewilderment, this turned out to be one of the biggest surprises I’ve seen the entire year and I’m more than delighted to announce that it is almost everything a murder-mystery fan would hope for and more. The films intrinsic 70’s style brings that same sensibility Rian is known for, mixing dark subject matter with a lighter touch and masterfully combining comedy and suspense in a wickedly entertaining package, its witty and hilarious dialogue will inspire hails of wry humor and laughter, it’s clever with its narrative, being diversive and thought-provoking despite its unoriginal take on the whodunnit tale, the actors play tremendously off of one another while their characters are so witty and charming that even if you don’t like them, you’ll want to see more of them, the pacing is perfect, it’s presentation and writing is nearly sublime, and while the story may not be as clever as Rian thinks it is, outside of the overall structure of the story and the mystery giving us a genuine breath of fresh air, Johnson’s direction once again subverts expectations in a way that keeps the story engaging and from getting too crazy (as crazy as it already is). One of the best things about this movie is the fact you can’t give too much away without spoiling. It places twist upon twist upon twist on top of one another and they’re all executed so well that once it was revealed who the culprit was, I just wanted to rewind and watch it again. I know for a fact that people have been giving Rian a lot of shit for what he did on The Last Jedi and it is understandable but I advise you to give this movie a shot. It’s got almost everything you would expect to see in not only a great film but in a great murder mystery film.
Agatha Christie would be proud.
9.7/10
Have you ever heard of the word "brevity"?
voodoochile333 concise and exact use of words in writing or speech.
Agatha Christie should be proud since it's pretty much her story of Crooked House with a comedic twist. And you obviously have never seen _Murder by Death_ or _Clue_ if you think this take on a murder mystery in a house is anywhere near original.
Court is adjourned...
@@cissyiniguez wow dude you have a different opinion about a movie do you feel smart now?
That accent used to exist but is kinda gone from the South nowadays. It's mostly an old-timey Georgia accent i think. He's on purpose doing an outdated accent that reminds Americans of Foghorn Leghorn. So in total it's a success. If you ever saw Tombstone, Val Kilmer does the same thing, playing an intellectual from Georgia.
That’s why I liked Daniel’s accent so much! I love love LOOOVVE the movie Tombstone and Val Kilmer’s performance in it. It’s iconic in my opinion. Daniel Craig was wonderful to watch in this movie and I found his accent to be rather enjoyable.
"Shut up with that Kentucky-fried, Foghorn Leghorn drawl!"
Meg was 100% not being used. She hung up the second she found out Marta would help her. The second her money came into question she gave up on all the values she said she held to help herself.
And she gave the info about her mother, allowing them to threaten her with deporting her mother.
She litteraly has been at school longer than it should tale to graduate.
She is apparently not responsible either and when her privilege was threatened the social justice warrior dropped all her so called principles.
this movie is literally phenomenal
You realised the ending a lot quicker than me
I legit thought that ransom was innocent and it was Richard
Rian Johnson have said that if this were to become a series with Daniel Craigs character, he would write him with a different accent in each movie
Definitely one of the best films I've seen this year.
If you like Chris Evans being an arse, and you like good shot composition and production design, then you absolutely have to watch *Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World*.
Great film!
Or I’d you just like Chris Evans being an arse watch fantastic four
I love your commentaries! They are s fun and interesting to watch and you're amazing!
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the vid ☺️
His Louisiana accent is a tad exaggerated but honestly it just adds to the flair of the character. I think it's great.
15:15 this is pretty much the main reason I love this movie so much. By switching genres from mystery to thriller you’re trying to make sense of it all in a good way. Clearly something is up, but you also literally saw Harlan kill himself. So was it a frame job? Did it go according to plan? Who did it? Did anyone do it at all?
I absolutely loved this movie. It was so much fun. I never noticed Marta sitting directly in the middle of the knives... and we find out that she WAS the target of the scheme all along. I love that her being a genuinely pure person is what saved her in the end.
You should react to Jennifer’s body. Dylan’s in trouble did it a and it was good
I watched his video yesterday. He is hilarious! 😂❤️
Nics&Nacs ya I was dying when they started kissing and he was like I knew it!!
if y'all don't give dylan up to god and start watching pretty much it instead....
@@k8ieedits Whats wrong with watching both? And I don't feel like paying to watch a decent amount of a reaction thanks.
@@k8ieedits Pretty Much It has felt off without Jacob. Eric and Jacob just have a certain chemistry that is hilarious but recently I've been tuning out of it
this movie is an absolute work of art, can't believe you called it!
i love how you notice all of these slight changes in the context of film making. its really nice to see someone react so genuinly to all of the cool little intricasies of everything like noticing the swap to hand held cam when she leaves the house after the will reading. its all cool asf
I love the genre switching this movie does. It goes from a who done it to a murder mystery back to a who done it. It’s one of my favourites
This was a fun commentary, your moment of realization was perfect.
1:26
"How rich is this person?"
Me: Yes.
At 12:36, Blanc says "The game is afoot", a well-known Sherlock Holmes saying. When he follows this by calling Marta "Watson", it's just a follow-through on this riff. It also implies he's aligned himself with Marta and doesn't see her as one of the suspects but rather his associate in solving the crime.
This movie was just a masterpiece of planting and payoff. I love it.
My fave film of last year. Endlessly smart and entertaining with such a great cast. Just brilliant!
You my lady, have excellent taste in movies!!
I love Rian Johnson movies!! (Yes, even The Last Jedi 😂)
You are not alone :)
@@bencebotye3904 I'm glad. ☺️
I love all his films except The Last Jedi. I found all the issues with that to be just weird, given how detail-oriented Johnson is in his other work, and especially in this film. To me, it feels like a lot like David Fincher and Alien 3-a very talented director getting hamstrung by studio interference and turning out a poorer product. Someday, someone should make a movie about the making of the sequel trilogy. I'd be willing to bet that's where the real entertainment would lie.
Brick is good too
Brick is awesome. Great use of language, and that bit with the chicken-shaped pitcher is hilarious.
this is hands down my favorite movie, the aesthetic, the vibes, the story, it’s all perfect
Benoit is like one of those old Louisianne Acadien grandperes whose French is so antique: "asteure", "icitte" and so on.
What did you think of the "You did this" scene ???
That banana that looked over ripe is actually a maduro platano and they just look like that
I love your reactions as you react to not only the movie, but the filmmaking behind it. The composition, editing, colors and lighting, etc. Keep up the awesome work!
Seeming to reveal the answer to the mystery at the midpoint of the movie is a brilliant way to both misdirect the audience as well as set up Blanc as the master detective for the big reveal at the end.
This movie literally shot to the top of my favorite films list the moment I left the theater
"Just give her a bucket..." best commentary line Ever!!
“The game is afoot.”
Sherlock Holmes actually said this. At the beginning of “The Adventure of the Abbey Grange,” he awakens Watson by saying, “Come, Watson, come. The game is afoot. Not a word!
I just rewatched this movie a couple days ago! It’s definitely one of my favorite movies from last year, and from what I gather, Rian Johnson is working on a sequel with Blanc and a mystery with a whole new cast of characters!
Love the little details in this movie. CinemaWins noticed something great. Chris Evans and the famous sweater. A wool sweater. Sheep’s clothing. So good!
This movie just goes to show that if Rian Johnson creates something wholly original instead of being given an existing IP, he's actually a pretty damned good filmmaker.
When Walt was trying to pressure Marta, the cane made it feel like he was intruding into my personal space. The scenes where we see flashes of Marta and Harlan broke my heart, you could see how close they were. I loved that because of the baseball, Linda found the letter about her husband cheating, which was funny cause he was the one that threw it outside. I loved everything about this film and all the little details in it. Such as how none of them knew where Marta was from, and the fact that they all say they were "outvoted" shows that none of them actually wanted her there.
I'm so glad you reacted to this masterpiece. It is visually stunning. Funniest reaction 😂👏🏼
One of my favorite tiny details is that when Marta and Ransom are in the restaurant and she's just told him everything, the chorus line to the song that's playing during the scene is, "You'd better take care if I find you've been creeping 'round my back stair," given both characters re-entered the house through the secret entrance, but we only know that about one of them at that point. I don't know what you thought about The Last Jedi (I myself didn't care for it at all), but you should definitely check out any of his other films. Despite what I consider a major misstep with Star Wars, he really is a good director with interesting ideas.
The Brothers Bloom, to me, is a good example of his innovative directing skills. The script is pretty normal, but that movie looks really good. The colors, the aesthetic, the angles, everything ties the movie together.
Also, I can now never see any other movie use the "crawling through the air ducts" scene without thinking of it and how much more accurate its version is.
I loved the movie because it somehow managed to act as if i was literally reading an old murder mystery novel. The dialogue the placement was just so surreal and I literally was gushing about how they managed to put a book in movie format like this
Daniel Craig's accent made me laugh so hard the entire movie 😂
ahhh yes!! LOVE this movie. one awesome detail in it is that throughout the movie the family members are constantly saying different countries in south america when talking about where marta is from. this shows how little they all care about her and know about her but how they want to appear intelligent and insightful nonetheless. all the details like this one are so brilliant!!!
When Blanc said the game is a foot he was pointing out Martha shoes that has blood on it but he still investigate the mystery because he knew Martha is a good person
My friend saw this movie a couple weeks after I did, and she said that for a moment she thought that the twist was going to be that Ransom and Marta had secretly planned everything together.
I thought that would have been epic!
I love that the who and the how are shown pretty early on, because it's super confusing as far as expectations go. You thought this was a murder mystery? Well, you know what happened, so it's not a mystery! And it's not a murder either! Such a mindfuck. And then the film just runs with that and turns it on its head again.
My favorite line in the entire movie was "I'm not going to eat one iota of shit" I lost it 😂🤣🤣
Hey, i just wanna say that i saw that you posted the video and got so happy! i love your reaction videos, and today was my first day in the office (after 3.5 month of home office), and this is a really nice surprise to come home to. Much love!
jesus christ, I've been binging your channel and it's quite incredible how fast you catch on to things
6:22 that was so cool!
can we talk about how the family was always saying they consider her part of the family and yet they don’t even bother to know where she’s from (Equador, Brazil...) and also they kept mentioning how they wanted her at the funeral but everyone was outvoted? lol they never really cared about her.
That “Hugh” “you” was so clever!!
Also it was super cool that Linda only found the letter because her husband throws that ball from the office in the beginning and she has to return it. Not to mention the whole “Hugh couldn’t tell the difference between a real and a fake knife”!
I had a feeling Marta didn't give him a fatal dose because she said he'd be dead within 10 minutes. It would take her much longer than that to get out of the house and come back, especially after he had to explain things to her. And he was still alive enough to cut is throat when she got there.
Also I love the mug at the end. Nice touch. :)
You caught way more of the little details than I did on the first watch lol. I'm impressed. I was so caught up in the atmosphere
This film was great, if you take recommendations then please watch Florida Project, it’s amazing
I second this
that's why he kept saying "somethings afoot". Because he knew Marta was involved because of the blood on her shoess
Such smart writing ☺️
14:01 you can hear Chris Evans' New England accent uncharacteristically coming out 😛
Chris Evans use to play hot jerks all the time pre-Cap and its so refreshing to see him back in that kind of character.
"How are you meant to divide all of his stuff?" HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
omg this is gonna be the best. You have the best commentaries on CZcams imo and I needed this treat today. Thank you!
Thanks! Enjoy ☺️
You were so quick to pick up the clues! Bravo! Also that bar of light over Meg's eyes 👌👌👌
The guy that played Harlan is Christopher plummer who played the dad in the sound of music
2:52 Thinks having a bear carpet in your house is weird but doesn’t think having a giant wheel of knives is 😂😂
This is my 3rd favourite film of 2019, so I’m so happy you reacted to it!
What are the first two? (I'm not implying this should be higher, just curious)
unoriginal.uniqueness booksmart and once upon a time in Hollywood 😌
omg i'm so happy you did knives out !! excited to watch ur commentary rn omg
I loved this movie. Well done.
I love your commentaries btw.
Chris Evans improvised the “eat shit” line. I’d imagine he could do this all day
He does whatever it takes 😂
I hate how amazingly accurate you are at predicting where a movie/show is going 😂
Aaaand 10:57 is SO me haha!!
His accent is supposedly based on the historian Shelby Foote who was born in Mississippi and then lived in Tennessee so Foote has this interesting mix of southern styles.
Knives Out is such a great movie! I'm glad you did a commentary/reaction to it on your channel. Apparently Daniel Craig got the accent from a real life person, a Civil War historian and Mississippi native Shelby Foote. Daniel Craig heard his voice in a Ken Burns miniseries. A mix of that turned up a notch and one can't help but think the cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn lol
Girl how are you so amazing at predicting things?! I love your commentary proper film buff you are
You are the only person I heard talking about the change to handheld when Martas coming out of the House. I loved that Shot so much,
I can't describe it ;)
I'm so glad you loved this movie. It is one of my favorites of last year for sure, and probably in my top ten of all time. It calls back to movies like Clue, anything by Agatha Christie, with a bit of Hitchcock thrown in. As far as Daniel Craig's accent, I agree with previous comments that it is exaggerated intentionally. As a movie watcher, I love the over the top accent, an American southerner it does make me cringe a little though.
And for God's sake, do NOT be seen!
"Ransom?..."
(Mission failed! You were seen! Try again.)😂😂
"You gotta be kidding me."
"I am not."
🤣🤣🤣🤣
There’s a old American stereotype of a southern lawyer or detective.0 I think Daniels accent is really well done and accurate!
wow, you were really on top of the plot details and called the switching bottles thing waaaay early. nice! also fully back your intent to mix up genres! makes it more fun.
personally, i recommend Last Of The Mohicans with daniel day lewis. you've never seen daniel day lewis like that.
Huh. I kinda landed here by accident and thought it was one of those "random person hasn't seen popular movie" channels. But then I gave it a chance and... that's pretty good, informed, insightful commentary. Reminder to check my preconceived notions, I suppose.
(also, called the plot correctly a lot faster than I did on first watch).
Really happy to hear you enjoyed the video ☺️
I LOVE Knives Out. I've already seen it twice and I'm forcing my friends to watch it these holidays 😁👌
Great reaction!!!!! You are so much fun to watch 😁
I love your attention to detail! You noticed SO MANY minor things happening
i'm so stoked for this, i absolutely loved knives out
Daniel Craig’s accent is very Kevin Spacey in House of Cards. Highly recommend watching Florida Project, Grand Budapest Hotel, or Truman Show!
The grandpa in the movie is playex by Christopher Plummer. If you've seen The Sound of Music, he was the father.
The best BTS information for this was how Chris Evans hated being mean to the dogs
If nobody else has mentioned it, Logan Lucky is a fine example of Daniel Craig with a slightly different southern-fried accent. On top of being a really good movie. Same director as Oceans 11.
Probably the most fun I had in a movie theater all last year. Such a snappy film. 😂
Fun facts: Ana de Armas (Marta the nurse) is also starring in the new Jams Bond movie with Daniel Craig. Daniel Craig and Christoper Plummer (Harlan, the guy who slit his throat) was in the movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo together.
I laughed so hard when *"you killed him"* turned out to be a pun
I love the end shot where the mug says my house (or something like it)
