Fun fact: it was Jack Reynor (Christian)'s idea to be naked when running. He said that female nudity in horror films is often justified by saying that it makes the women seem more vulnerable. He thought the same would be true for a man.

When I first saw the movie I was upset by the mural because I knew it would tell/foreshadow the whole story. Plus later you can tell a further plot point in the wallpaper 😂
I enjoyed it a lot though, however I found Hereditary was a far better and more subtle film as far as blatant foreshadowing.
Also the film annoyed me because I instantly knew it wasn’t Sweden from the foliage and rocks alone. But hey, most of not almost all movies are rarely shot on actual location anymore so I can’t really blame them.

Well I'm from Louisiana the "love story is true" you hear from many of the older people never let a woman cook you pasta or anything like that if she wants you. So that is a real thing. Another good book to read is Cane River.

This is the ultimate break-up movie.
Ari Aster actually wrote it going through a breakup. A lot of people did not like it cause it was not like Hereditary but Aster said that people should not expect it to be like Hereditary because it was a breakup movie. I love this movie so much.

A great thing about this movie that I guess some people don't catch- the subtle facial distortion and the flower effects is really accurate to actually tripping.
When they got high the first time in the field and the tree bark was all melty and flowy, i literally turned to my bf like ‘wow, thats actually pretty on the mark for what its like while tripping!’ Haha. I read later that the actors and crew ect discussed it a lot, eg those who had done hallucinogenics and similar collaborated to try and explain the sights and feelings to those who hadnt. They apparently did a lot of versions to try and get it right, without it being overwhelming and too distracting for scenes were other elements are important. I thought that was quite cool
as someone who has taken acid quite a few times, I agree. It was very accurate to how i felt the first time I tripped.

Florence Pugh was conpletely amazing in this movie! She deserved an oscar nomination for this too! She killed it! What an actress!

Dani and the commune pronounce Pelle's name correctly. Mark and the other guys pronounce it incorrectly to show their stupidity and incompetence
Didn't really sound like Pelle was bothered by it, though. Otherwise he would've corrected them, wouldn't he?

It's crazy how disturbing this movie is shot in the daylight,with bright colours,peacefull nature,everything is just perfect. That's one of the main reasons why this movie is so creepy to me,seeing something so terrible happening in day,not in the dark,at night. I found this to be very interesting and creative.

Same here, including the music which is beautiful, almost triumphant at the end as Dani has been fully converted and watches her now ex-boyfriend be burned alive. It's so perverse.
This movie is the reason why I'm not afraid of the dark anymore and why I stay inside during the day
I'm one of those people that likes the dark and real emotions while being totally creeped out when it's light and everyone is smiling at you.
True, except for the fact that loads of it was set at night but it had daylight due to that time of the year up north. That is what made it creepier, not realising which bits were day-time and night-time!
I think this is the first horror movie I've seen that has a subtle lesson of: Cut yourself off from toxic relationships before you easily find yourself in another one. And the fact that the entire movie was spoiled by the mural within seconds of the movie starting

Eyyy, that's a great observation! Man.... Ari Aster is .. bananas! He makes his films sooo layered. So much foreshadowing in the set pieces, camera shots, etc.. Great comment!
I agree and I noticed that at the end when Dani was smiling she looked just like the older women just younger

If I had not watched in theaters, I would've turned it off probably. So I'm very glad I didn't, because it was all worth it in the end for sure.
The moaning and crying are meant to be signs of reflection towards the person who is experiencing it. Like they’re replicating the feelings to make them closer. That’s part of the reason this movie is riddled with mirrors
It's also a contrast to the beginning of the movie after Dani's family dies and she's breaking down and Christian is comforting her in a very distant and emotionless fashion.
It’s actually really beautiful..... I actually legit enjoyed this movie I’d love to live like that. Do some chores. Drink mushroom tea. Do a happy dance. Don’t piss on the tree of knowledge.🤷♂️ No retirement plan necessary. So many pros.

I like to think that the only reason Christian was sacrificed was because Dani forgot the other dude's name and was too socially awkward to ask.

Well this movie shows how fast people can get into cults also how people are sent out to destroy you if they can. So we see that cult gets their people to go out and find folks to sacrifice. There is really nothing they could have done differently, Dani is pretty much chosen to join them to me it's really not a break up movie. People are join at weak moments of their lives.
Ari Aster wrote this movie while going through a breakup and you can tell. Also, I don't think most people will appreciate how funny this movie is at times when it's not being disturbing (that whole sex scene near the end is messed up yet hilarious)
Imagine whoever he split up from watching this and seeing what happens to Christian in the end.
I'd alert the authorities.

Fun facts in Scandinavia midsommer is a real thing BUT they don’t jump off of cliffs they don’t do drugs you can leave
Hereditary is awesome, but Midsommar is a deeper, more layered movie. There are a lot of details that you can't catch in 1 viewing. It also brings up interesting moral questions, including ones regarding the treatment of the elderly.

It's really not that deep imo, the story just felt kinda half baked to me. It had sum interesting moments here & there, but after a while it was just a struggle to sit through.

True, they lured her in and it worked on her because she always was the odd one out. With her family, her friends and even her boyfriend didn't want her anymore. Being taken into the cult (more or less brainwashed, but still) she finally felt like she had a place she belonged and that's why she smiled at the end

What I always found interesting about this film is how the tapestry at the very beginning before the opening scene depicts the general plot of the movie. Such a fantastic film, one of my favorite little details about the film
I just read a comment that pointed out the sun in that tapestry had the same exact smile Dani did at the end of the movie...I found that interesting...
I saw this in theaters with a group of friends last summer, and NONE of us knew anything about the movie other than it was about a cult, and it was from A24 😂

well, she admitted in the beginning, that he was always supporting her. but nobody supported him.
She needed a therapist, too ,much to put on him. The moment your partner feels like they are taking "care" of you it's over and should be. This movie really reminded me of a ex I had.
@@jwoods9659 She did have a therapist and is also on medication. But it's made pretty clear that he's giving her absolutely no support and yet he still acts like it's a burden and makes her feel guilty for it. That's an *awful* person.
@@xen0bia Bearing other peoples hurt and pain IS a burden. He should have just left, he felt guilty and RESPONSIBLE for her. Built resentment that why he gave no support she felt guilty on her own because she knew she was leaning on him too much. I know I sound like total ass but really there was nothing good that was going to come out of that sometimes it's best to walk away. SO you know don't get me wrong yes your support your partner but she clearly had far far more personal issues than he was able to handle. I've been there never going back
@@jwoods9659 Except he wasn't bearing any of her pain, it was pretense. He was avoiding having to do any emotional support, not really feeling any empathy for her, and was consistantly acting detached from her and gaslighting her as a result. And I highly disagree that he felt responsible for her and that's why he didn't broke with her. No he didn't break up with her, something he had been putting off for months, years, who knows, because he's an emotionally inept person. And I know what you are saying about people who are extremely emotionally dependant and always laying down their problems unto everyone around them. I had a bipolar coworker off her meds that did pretty much exactly that, and it was toxic as Hell, but Dani is not portrayed like that at all. She runs off to cry alone away from people to not "burden" them - that's entirely uncharacteristic of the archetype. On the other hand, I've also known emotionally inept people who run away at the first sight of an emotion that's inconveniencing them or making them uncomfortable, and entirely failing to provide an ounce of support and comfort to a loved one in a rare instance of need. So yeah, neither type of people are good, but I'm pretty sure the movie was going for the latter from what we can see and deduce from it.
I love all of the weird animations on plants and other textures when they're tripping. It actually looks like the stuff you see on LSD.

Midsommar is the most cathartic break up movie I've ever seen. Love it so much. A small, sadistic part of me wants to tell you to go watch "The Strange Thing About the Johnsons", buuuuut, I think that might be a half hour of "...what tha...no, no, no, no, no....WHAT THA??...EEEEEWWWWWW!!" It is directed by Ari Aster, and I made it thru it once. Once was more than enough. I'll rewatch Hereditary and Midsommar endlessly. Will take a hard skip on rewatching "The Strange Thing About The Johnsons".
After going through a really emotionally scarring breakup, this movie hit different. I think it does s great job capturing the pain of love as it’s “horror”
Ari Aster said that most of the characters are trapped in a horror film, but the main character, Dani, is living in a twisted fairy tale. Also the majority of the commune’s traditions were ACTUALLY believed in the past.
Sorry to say but no, the commune's traditions where not believed in the past. Atleast not i Sweden. Ari picked and choosed from a bunch of different and creepy folktales and super old traditions from a number of different countries.
Blot where something that could occur during the viking era but Midsommar is mostly celebrated for "johannes döparens dag" and is a more "christian" holiday than this more makes it out to be.
Vikings did if anything celebrate "Sommarsolståndet". But "Midsommar" have never been proven to be celebrated before Christianity came to Sweden.
The production and costume designs are great, I wish it got nominated. I have seen people cosplay as the main character at conventions.
This movie became an instant pop culture classic!

"Pell" is an American way of saying that name. "Pelle" is the right way, the way us swedes pronounce the (Swedish) name.
Pelle means skin in Italian. It's pronunced the same.

Yay!! I’m so happy you made this video!! I’ve been on a kick of your reaction videos this past week and Midsommar is one of my favorites! I started with your Hereditary video, so this is a fitting next step. Keep up the good work!!
Yay! Now that you watched both this and Hereditary, did you notice that they are both essentially ascension arcs for Dani (Midsommar) and Peter (Hereditary) ending in a crowning? Very deranged and messed up ascension arcs, but ascension arcs none the less.
I hated the gaslighting here so much. You know what when I saw Dani smiling at the end, deep inside I kinda felt relieved
That ending is just soooo..... perfect. Just such an unreal eerie buildup the WHOLE time, with a single hint of happiness at the end.

If you like these "slow descent into madness" movies I have 3 recommendations:
THE WITCH (2015): A24 movie by the same director as "THE LIGHTHOUSE". I don't recommend watching a lot of A24 movies in a row (although I love them all) because you begin to see the seams of the structure and pacing and it gets a bit predictable. If you don't mind that, go ahead.
CLIMAX (2018): By the same director as "ENTER THE VOID" (a visually stunning movie BTW, highly recommend). French dancers rehearsing in an abandoned school during a snowstorm, someone spikes the sangria bowl with LSD. I watched it once back when it came out and still remember every single scene. It sticks with you.
SUSPIRIA (2018): Renowned dance company with dark secrets. Also soundtrack by Thom Yorke. Also Tilda Swinton is three characters. At 2.5 hours, it's the definition of a slow burner, although it´s so bonkers it's more like a pressure cooker. The original from 1977 is a masterpiece, but very very different stylistically, this new one is more of a spiritual successor than a remake. I recommend them both.
EDIT: I've been informed that THE WITCH is on the channel already (and if you didn't like it, that's totally fine, these movies can be polarizing), so I'll toss in a bonus one that I forgot to mention:
ANNIHILATION (2018): I don't know man, this one is a mindfuck. Big ass soap bubble dome slowly growing, Natalie Portman goes inside to investigate, crazy shit happens. Very Lovecraftian. Not as slow burning, the craziness certainly builds up but it's starts strong and keeps going. Also the expedition crew (aka the whole cast for most of the movie) is all women, and they're very well written, which is always a plus.
Also, I totally forgot that CLIMAX is also A24. The extremely long takes and the french threw me off. It feels like a A24 quality foreign student film (because in a way it kinda is, production wise. Watch it and then check how it was made, it's amazing)
She's already seen The Witch in a 24 horror marathon. I think she didn't like it tho

I know you probably thought this was horrible. But I've been thinking about this movie for so long not being able to sleep because of it. And I haven't even seen it. Seeing your reaction and the fact that you blurred out so much so I didn't have to actually see it answered all my questions about it without needing to have all the awful pictures. (I'm really sensitive too stuff like this) and because of you I've been able to sleep without dreaming of this movie for a week now. So even tho you probably didn't like all the editing and even tho you probably suffered through the movie. Thank you so much, because you really save my good night sleep for the rest of the month and my sanity❤️
I just have to say how much I appreciate the whisper yelling. On a lot of reaction channels you have to constantly adjust the volume when they freak out. Thank-you for keeping the levels in check and I love your videos in general.

Unsettling, mind-numbing and understandably subjective in its use of terror and horror, Ari Aster shows his genius and craftsmanship with “Midsommar”, a film that delves into the unraveling of human suffering, trauma, agitation, isolation, grief, anxiety, depression, loss, despair, abandonment and still manages to depict it in the most unsettling yet frighteningly realistic position possible. Once again, Ari Aster’s personal demons and struggles help him pave the way to creating not so much a culturally enriching story as opposed to one where the setting, creepy imagery and the entitled folklore weaves deeply into said story to where once again, it feels way too real. The events in this film display the destruction of true innocence combating the lunacy and unpredictability of human nature at its absolute worst.
Other factors outside of the themes work equaling as well with the dark comedy actually advancing the story as well as dialed up tension and suspense, creepy imagery and phenomenal performances with Florence Pugh being the standout to an outstanding degree. Reminded me a lot of Hereditary and even more of films like Annihilation, because to me, this is art. You ease your way forward, take a slow burn through the content and then the twist comes your way making you question everything you just saw. Once again though, Aster understands how subjective horror can be and doesn’t hold the audiences hand for them to make up their own minds.
This is how you make a horror movie, Hollywood. So take notes from Ari Aster cause he’s apparently no one trick pony.

They will go for the cheap route, so that they can make more money. Hereditary and Midsommar weren't really box office hits... sadly. So, unfortunately they will draw doodles instead of making notes.

This might be my favourite reaction video ever. I saw the movie a few weeks ago and that was one of the most intense movie experiences in years. Seeing your reaction was pure deja vu. Sure, reaction vids are all about seeing other peoples' points of view. But in this case I just enjoyed the sameness of our reactions! :)

I can safely say this movie made me cry. But I can't explain why. When the final scene played out, tears were just rolling down my cheeks, this film was an experience that affected me. Not a single damn movie has done that to me in 25 years of living.
They have more than 1 person to bring down the mallet on the guy's head because then no ONE person is theoretically responsible for the killing blow.
Another entertaining reaction lol. Ari Aster went through a difficult breakup and him writing this movie was his expression of that. I agree his visual style is amazing, a lot of research was done for this movie, but like in horror done well, reality was twisted and turned upside down, taken to the extreme to bring the disturbing. We appreciate your horror commentaries! They’re so fun to watch. May I recommend the movie ‘Crawl’, it’s a straight forward thrill ride about a girl, a storm, and alligators! I think you’ll actually have fun with that one as it’s done so well! Keep those horrors coming! What I love about people who aren't good with horror movies is that they tend to judge the movie based on the actual movie! Most people I know that watched the movie with me love horror and aren't that easily scared, and they judged the movie's length and how annoying the characters were. Like that doesn't matter, it made sense that Dani was emotional and how she felt about Christan and why everyone stayed. It feels like they don't understand the movie as much as I do, which is why I love to see people like you *actually* watch the movie

It´s also kind of a horror-ish movie, but I won´t spoil anything more to you. It´s best enjoyed going in blind, I even really appreciated it after multiple viewings, because I´m a dumbass. But today, it´s a clear 10/10 movie for me!

This is the best horror movie of the last decade. It's so disturbing and beautiful at the same time. You hate it and you love it. You want to look away but you can't. Ari Aster is a master playing with the emotions of his audience whenever and however he wants.
