I watched this movie while high and it was the scariest thing I've ever done

Really?? Me and my buddies did the same thing on 4th of July this year, we all took 1 1/2 tabs of Acid (10th time I've done it and I'm 35). And the movie was a fucking trip for sure man! I love the insanity of it haha...

Well when she asked what happens after 72, he did imply they were killed off.
Should have mentioned the whole “nature is breathing” thing. Because it helped us identify every time Dani was drugged. The flowers and other elements of nature would “breath” when she’s high telling us they drugged her and lied abt it.

Also, Christian said they had been together for 3 and a half years, which was technically true from his perspective.
He had every intention of breaking up with her 6 months prior, but her sister ended up dying and he felt like he couldn't do it any more.
But, he emotionally clocked out, and he hasn't really been a part of the relationship since then. Incredibly clever storytelling, and speaks volumes to their characters from an otherwise innocuous question and conversation.
I actually never caught that! That is a really cool detail thank you!

The murder-suicide scene in this movie is one of the most horrific I’ve ever seen onscreen, and frankly I’m glad you took a moment to do the right thing despite the pause.
For real, it was right at the beginning, so right there I was regretting my decision to watch this film. Luckily it was the scariest scene of the film.
Box0rz really? I thought the blood eagle at the end was more horrific than the murder suicide. But to each their own.

11:21 they actually already planned on dani becoming the may queen. When the all arrive, they say “welcome home” to dani instead of just welcome like the others. Dani is the most emotionally broken person that joined them meaning she would be easier to break further. Also during the may queen ritual, some girls purposely knock into one another, until dani is the only one left because they wanted her to feel at home. In another scene, they are pretending to sacrifice a child, only to then stop when dani protests. I love pelle as a character but he had dani in his sights to be may queen from the start, he even showed her a photo of the last years may queen. He also knew christian forgot her birthday and gave her a drawing that he “only does for birthdays.” He also kisses her later on, and questions dani saying, “do you feel held by him? Does he feel like home to you?” They wanted her as may queen the whole time, the proof is in the context of any scene she is in with a member of the cult.

The toxic relationship between Dani and Christian was so realistic. His gas lighting, deflecting, overall cowardice, & her need to backtrack from justified feelings bc of his reaction, it's very well done
dont forget her own bullshit when she unprovokingly said "i could see you doing that" (in reference to that other dude 'ditching' his fiance). its like she wants to keep him pissed off and then he asks "what does that mean", shes all like "oh nothing". they are both assholes

I honestly think throughout the whole movie every character from the group started pissing the cult off disrespecting their traditions, which leads us to believe that those are the reasons they’re sacrificed and/or murdered. But what’s even more disturbing is that despite those actions that made the cult angry, they were going to end up murdering them anyway. They portray it in such a way that it makes us feel like it’s the group’s fault, like their deaths could’ve been avoided
woah I didn't even realize that. it's definitely a part of the brainwashing the movie does on the viewer themself, so when we get to the end and dani's smiling we want to think it's a happy ending. i mean, they did all that rude stuff to the community so they deserve to be murdered, right?
Connie and Simon didn't do anything egregiously disrespectful, yet they were murdered violently (especially Simon).
That's an interesting take on the brainwashing aspect of the cult though.
The creator himself stated that anything they would have or would not have done wouldn’t have changed their fate in the first place, they still would have been killed regardless.

The dream about everyone leaving in a car foreshadows that everyone leaves (die), and Dani stays. So it's kinda relevant to the plot?...
Plus she just witnessed 2 gruesome deaths and would be able to sleep peacefully? I don't think so
and i think it could also relate to the death of her parents and sister? (i don’t remember exactly) in the beginning since they died from the car in the house, so everyone in the car in her dream ended up dying but she didn’t cuz she wasn’t in the car

Anyone who keeps chickens knows that one of the biggest missed sins here is the idea that you could arrange a super creepy and elaborate murder display in a henhouse without the chickens 100% ruining everything by A. eating every single scrap of exposed flesh and B. Perching on the suspended corpse and pooping all over it. Chickens are just small, fat, omnivorous velociraptors.
I'm still confused about the display itself, tucked away in a random shed in the middle of a field. Who was it for? It's almost like the movie isn't actually all that well written.
It was a “bloody angel”, where the lungs are pulled out the back like wings while the person is still alive. It was supposedly a Viking punishment

His girlfriend was drowned with the fish and Christian burned with the bear, so there could be more correlation between the animals and the deaths than appears.

@@darryl2542similar to the Shining as well. Most of the classic horror scenes in that film are done in full light (twins, bathroom with Grady, the bat scene with Wendy, etc). Very rare to have a horror movie using bright light instead of darkness/shadow to depict evil.
In my country it is titled Midsommar: on a bright/white day
We use a phrase "on a white (meaning bright) day" if a crime is commited in the daylight because the crime is Associated with night/darkness since we are scared of the dark as humans and its easier to get away with it at night. So commiting a crime on a white/bright day is something unusual, an act of over-confidence even, the literal audacity and its really unexpected. I think its a cool word game considering that everything in the movie happens in sunlight
Dani was never really on the chopping block. Pelle was congratulated for not only bringing visitors, but also bringing a new member in to the community. When they arrive Odd says hello to all of them, but specifically says "welcome home" and is much warmer to Dani.

I was thinking of the same thing. CinemaSins paid so much attention to all the other little foreshadowing but didn't get right what was spelled out loud in the end and hinted at since the beginning. Pelle and his sweet warmth was the walking thirst trap for a an extremely emotionally vulnerable Dani. A stark contrast to Christian and his apathy. Dani was obviously chosen as the (pardon my language) "breeder" for the cult because she would've been the easiest to manipulate (owing to her loss), since no woman in her right mind would say yes to this sh*t!
Yeah, they always intended for her to join. In fact, the cult may have killed her sister and parents and made it look like a murder suicide to separate her from her family, and to connect her past to ritualistic suicide, to make her more open to their ways. Or the guy simply dug into her past and knew about it, which made her an ideal candidate mentally that could open up to their ways. But given how they operate, I think the whole thing was staged to push her into a certain direction to bring her into the cult. After all, they don't need just anyone to bring in new blood, they need people who can be brought into the cults ways and follow them and keep the traditions alive. And that takes very careful psychological manipulation.
It may also be possible that her parents were in the cult. They never actually call Dani "new blood", and when they welcome her in the beginning, they say "Welcome home". So it's possible that her parents, either one or both of them, were born into the cult and left at some point, either to try to escape the cult, or because everyone leaves the bunkhouse when they hit a certain age.
As for her becoming the queen, that was up for grabs. She was essentially proving herself, after being selected as a candidate. That's why they say the one guy who brought them that was being honored for his "unclouded intuition". He brought Dani there to trial for queen. I think part of it was his own desire for her too. So they could eventually become like that old couple in the beginning, sacrificing themselves at the next ritual time. But in the meantime, Dani will be tasked with being a queen, which is essentially a cult leader position. I think it's possible he was actually trialing that girl from London first, but it didn't pan out, while he later knew Dani was in a bad relationship and had a history that would make her open to manipulation and ritualistic suicide/murder.
I mean if you think about it, how would a cult go about finding new blood? They'd be looking for people they've mentally profiled. And this isn't just any cult, they need people who will continue the traditions, so they can't be trying to recruit random people. They have to carefully choose their future members/leaders. And making her a queen, while giving her a sense of family and greater purpose, gives her a reason to stay and continue following their ways. That's how the cult operates to hook you in.
I think a thing about the cult that makes them need to bring in new blood, is that they are such a small group, they risk inbreeding if they don't bring in new blood every now and then. While they use inbreeding to make an "oracle", they don't want their whole population inbred. So some of the cultists bring in new women or men as they see fit. Not at an extraordinary rate, but enough to keep the community blood lines varied enough to avoid general inbreeding.

id like to applaud midsommar for keeping the bright spring aesthetic throughout a very dark film
It’s called daylight horror!
The scene where Dani is sobbing and surrounded by the female cult members mimicking her desperate wails, is one of the most disturbing scenes I've ever witnessed on film.
It made me so uncomfortable I had to turn it all the way down
It’s like denying her her own emotion. She can’t feel some type of way because they all feel it
This is the first comment I’ve seen addressing that. It was horrifying to watch. The way a cult removes all individuality to the point where she isn’t even entitled to her own emotions while in the midst of a full blown mental breakdown.
It reminded me of the scene in Texas Chainsaw Massacre when Sally is screaming at the table and leather face and his family are making fun of her by screaming along with her.
Disturbing? It was cringe worthy. It was so painful to watch it was almost comedy.
Florence Pugh elevated this movie with her acting. She's incredible.
Yeah and the fact that she goes from playing the mentally-unstable and hurting Dani Ardor to the precocious and childish Amy March in the same year...what a transition! I look forward to seeing her in Black Widow.

@@housekinokuni903 I didn't see FWMF but I did see Little Women, she did indeed do a great job especially since Amy is supposed to be 12 in the beginning and Florence is 24 I believe, but she pulled it off, as well as showing Amy's transition into maturity as a young adult.
This film is gorgeous to look at, it has good acting, an original story, great production design, makeup and costume design and the cinematography is incredible but I NEVER want to watch it ever again

I watched it multiple times only to find the hidden “Easter eggs”. There were obvious blatant ones but there were many hidden ones that added so much depth to the movie that made the movie a real masterpiece.
christian was kind of an asshole. he wanted to steal his friends thesis. he had lost feelings for dani and actively wanted to break up with her. forgot her birthday. downplayed her sisters mental health issues. but he still cared about her. he delayed his break up because he knew the effect it would have on her after the ordeal with her family. he sacrificed his fun trip to bring her along even though he knew it would strain his friendship with his friends. he always went after her to make sure she was ok and wasnt excluded. he was a flawed human being like most of us and went at some things the wrong way but he still had good intentions towards dani. then he gets drugged, raped, and set up to have a person he cares about deeply ultimately sentencing him to a horrible excruciating fiery death which he absolutely did not deserve. i think thats one of the most fucked up parts of this movie second only to what dani went through with her family. and thats only because that is 3 deaths and one girls mental health vs 1 death. but atleast they did peacefull in their sleep
10:28 The pubic hair on the food was Maya's love spell for Christian. Earlier in the film a story had been shown in a tapestry about a woman who put pubic hair and menstrual blood for a spell to make a man fall in love and have a child with her. Disgusting, but cannon in the movie

The same one that keeps telling Christian to hook up with hot waitresses. Any hair found, he'd probably joke that it's a pubic hair. Nobody noticing the darker drink is simply not paying attention to it as their focus is elsewhere: internally like Dani or externally like watching the other members. Like while we should watch our drinks while at the bar, how many college kids are actually going to? Not many.
Oh. I thought the tapestry showed the woman snipping off her "external fun play button" and doing something with that.

In many traditional cultures it is seen as an altruistic act to lessen the burden on the community by walking off in to the distance. Here they ritualistically commit suicide, but it is seen as honorable.

I'm not going to be a dick and say that he wouldn't feel anything due to a huge adrenaline rush but I think it would contribute.
When the sex scene played in the theater everyone reacted the same way: hideous laughter, brief pause, more laughter, then complete silence near the end. A strange communal moment from a group of people that didn't know each other.
Edit: I've been getting replies to this post for a year+ now, so I just want to acknowledge that obviously rape of any kind is bad, and that the emotional rollercoaster I portrayed was more of an initial mental safeguard that wore off as the scene went on. I appreciate all the discussion hope you're all doing well!
I watched the movie at home with my sister and 2 cousins. We watched like 2 seconds of it and skipped it bc nothing is more awkward than watching a sex scene with your fam

Watching this movie as a Swedish person is a whole different thing. Not only do I love the Movie for all the reasons you guys do. There is also sooo much stuff that you wouldn't catch if you are not native to the Nordics. If you don't already know, the midsummer tradition is a real thing that happens every year. All tough very different, it shares a lot of similarities to what is shown in the movie. The scene where they dance around the pole is for example a real thing we do and the way they dress is really close to the traditional midsummer attire.
Before i watched this movie i thought they were gonna completely butcher the traditions and culture we have in the Nordics but i was blown away by every little detail. Everything from the the conversation in Swedish to the paintings and drawings that appear in the backround are so incredibly similar to our real culture that i honestly could see this cult actually being a real thing if christianity was never introduced to Sweden.
I don't think I will ever watch a movie that tops Midsummer.
Praise God the people up there were reached with the Truth of the Gospel!

Fact: on the big flower crown, there's a giant pink flower (with a very big center if you need to find it) and that flower actually pulses like a heartbeat. It's not your eyes playing tricks on you either, I think it was implemented in for a reason
I’m a little sad there wasn’t a sin removed for that look she gives Christian before deciding to sacrifice him. It’s so genuine and painful, and you feel Dani’s emotional so intensely
What look? I've seen multiple people talk about a look and how she chose him, but all I see during that moment are 2 fucked up people drugged out their assholes. I have a theory that it wasn't her choice at all and was gaslit by the cult to make her believe she chose, which would fit in nicely with the film's theme iof manipulation.
That look felt more like shame in knowing she was gonna pick him instead of her new family.

After he had been such an unbearable bastard to her and had stolen his friend's research topic and then didnt care when all the non-Swedish people started to go missing... and if the film is a movie about a break up, that moment when she tears up because she knows its over and shes going to pick him is so raw. I feel like I can almost see a dawning realization in his eyes that his not caring about everyone going missing is exactly why he was in that chair and eventually in that bear suit!! I was happy she smiled in the end - able to let go of that toxic dick!

Sin 64: They ABSOLUTELY know that Dani's going to be the May Queen. Pelle said he was most happy about her to come with him, and he even drew her with a crown made of flowers, implicating that she's going to be part of the community. Also, during the actual dance ritual, the contestants that were shown to be eliminated clearly did fake it, as they bumped into each other in a highly staged manner.
It was mentioned in the beginning that vikings used to kidnap women into their communities to prevent inbreeding.
I've seen some people even pointing out the theory that Pelle set EVERYTHING in motion, and might have even been responsible for the passing of Danis family. He made Maja aware of Christian even before they arrived, by showing her a picture of him, and the whole community was actively working on seperating Dani from him, and the rest of her "past", so she wouldn't have a reason to ever go back. This was visualized pretty well after Dani became the May Queen, when the whole group walked her away, fully embracing her, with Christian being isolated and left behind.
He was also encouraging christian to ditch dani too! I was suspicious of him the entire movie!

I think the scene when Dani decides to go on the trip sort of disproves that theory. I think Pele was charged with bringing outsiders to be sacrificed but I don't think she was necessarily a target in his initial plan.

This is one of the most jarring movies I’ve ever watched. Me and my friend watched it, and after it was done we sat there quietly and didn’t even know what to do after it
My response as well. Went into the movie not knowing much about it and was blown away. Watched Hereditary shortly after and I am hooked on the director.
My initial response was "what the duck did I just watch?!?!?!" In the sense that I don't know that I was able to process everything right away...it almost seemed ridiculous and meaningless at first, but something in me doesn't want to experience that insanity again...lol

Yeah, this was quite the engrossing movie, even with its jarring elements, and I personally felt more invested in this film than Hereditary. Granted, a large part of that is because Midsommar provided a much more enjoyable theater experience, but I feel like there was more of an invitation for the audience to physically explore this unfamiliar setting with the characters, while Hereditary was more of a mental exploration.
I paused the video and broke into tears when Jeremy brought up the suicide hotline. I have so much more respect for this channel

This is the only movie that I have seen ACCURATELY represent "tripping" and "trips" in general. From the conversation of trying to get everyone to trip at the same time (actual conversations I've heard/had), to the visual effects(not being too over the top with hallucinations) and finally what your mental state is like while tripping (can be different from shrooms or acid but basically just heightened level of conscious thinking that "can" cause extreme anxiety) this movie was great

I can answer those questions. Ari Aster confirmed that the Harga are racist. They didn't need a real reason to remove Simon except questioning the Attestupa and Connie except for asking about Simon. They specifically killed Simon, Connie, and Josh because they weren't white. So if Josh hadn't gone into the library, they would have just killed him secretly.
Considering the type of guy Mark is and how he insulted the village from the moment they got there, it probably would have been a matter of time before he did something to make them mad. If not, they might have made one up just to get rid of him.
Also Dani's ass was never on the chopping block. The women purposely dropped out of the dancing so she could be crowned May Queen. Besides the obvious visual foreshadowing, Pelle probably was able to study her character enough to report back to The Harga either before or during their visit and say "This woman is perfect for us. Her family just died, she is vulnerable and easily persuaded. She will definitely join us no questions asked." He's a cult recruiter and that's how they recruit people by studying and preying on their vulnerabilities.
With Christian, it was probably a fifty fifty whether he would have made a sacrifice or not. But Pelle probably also assessed his personality as well. Plus since they drugged and trapped him and he was already on the outs with his girlfriend Christian would have been done for. Plus their tension was partly their own issues but also Pelle manipulating the situation by coming off as the better more caring one by remembering her birthday and encouraging her to talk about her parents and sister, so Christian fell short making their relationship even testier.
Now the only way none of this could have played out was if they or specifically Dani didn't go, but that's probably why they had other recruiters like Ingemar and other outsiders like that "hipster couple" that Jeremy mentioned attending the ceremony. Their perfect choice was Dani but if she hadn't come there would have been other contingency May Queens in place. But Dani, her friends, Simon, and Connie did come and once they were there, they played right into their hands.
Oh and the lottery is a tribute to Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" which also involved a ritualistic murder disguised as a traditional ceremony.
I reckon the drug was a combination of *psilocybin* (shrooms), a benzo-like *GABA agonist,* and *scopolamine* aka devil's breath, an anticholinergic. Psychedelics like shrooms help detach oneself from distinguishing reality from tripping (as evidenced by the kaleidoscopic form constants in the filmography and special effects), the GABA agonist *lowers anxiety and decreases your inhibitions,* making you more susceptible to suggestion so as to appear more bold or ballsy.
And scopolamine forces you to submit. It puts you in a trance like state- literally turning you into a functional walking puppet by *taking away your free will...* In turn making you succumb to external influence and control. In sufficient quantities it can induce paralysis.
Christian definitely appears to be under that spell.
This is a terrifying combination, and in the context of the cult, acts as a parallel to the lethal injection which is a series of three deadly cocktails.
They should've given them a shitton of datura and called it a day (i think scopolamine is partially present in datura). They won't be going anywhere either way and they'll likely experience a trip worse than death if the cultists were looking to punish them somehow. Now imagine being on a truckload of datura WHILE experiencing a bear carcass put unto you, then presto, death by immolation or whatever happened. If you asked me whether I'd take datura just to participate in an orgy of their caliber, I would probably think about my decision an uncomfortable amount of time. But I guess I'd rather not regret I never got my sanity back.

This movie triggered some buried shit in me. I had a three and a half year relationship that was very similar to the Christian and Dani shit and watching this movie, while not traditionally scary, was very emotionally troubling. And for that, I have to give it so much props.

I had a similar experience in my personal life and when watching the movie. It was beautiful and well done, but I’m always torn about rewatching it because of how much it disturbed me vs how good it is.
As for if Christian deserved to die, I don’t think so… He was raped and a part of me thinks that the cult planned for that to happen so that Dani would find the ritual -not knowing he was assaulted- so it would push her to choose him to die. It was like the last step for her indoctrination into the cult as she has no ties outside of the cult at the end of the movie which is a common cult tactic.

I think it's clear that he kind of has meandering feelings potentially but yes he was drugged and therefore he could not give consent for that. I don't know if the woman was also or if she was sober, technically I don't think we know that either. And yes they definitely knew that it would trigger Dani, like Pele is key here because he knows their relationship and the situation and clearly aims to try to mate with her afterwards since that's necessary to avoid inbreeding.
What director Ari Astor does in Midsommar & Hereditary is to build his horror tropes around real-life trauma. So in both films there are family deaths which not only jumpstart the plot, but keep the future action on an unsettling, disturbing, morbid basis. And I think they're both the best kind of horror films: disturbing, while not relying on jump scares.

Just finally watched this last night for the first time.
I gotta say, this film has some of the best depictions of psychedelic hallucinations I've ever seen in a movie. Not overly done, not in-your-face like Fear & Loathing. It's far more subtle, but unmistakable at the same time. The way things swell and fall and seem to breath, the way the plants moved with Dani when she was on her throne, being totally lost in time like during the dancing and during the feast right before the sex scene; that feeling of "wtf is going on, how long have I been here". It drags a little bit on screen but the director purposely took the time to drag us down into this weird trip with them. Christian sitting at the table tripping balls while he looks around is just fucking perfect. If you've ever had a weird trip you know exactly what that feels like.
I think it's very interesting that Pelle tried to talk Dani out of her feelings by stating he too related to her, but later on when she's having a breakdown all the women gather around her and have this cathartic moment WITH her vs trying to fix the problem through relating when someone is having a meltdown (which isn't the time to try to fix an emotional problem).
This holds pretty true to life. Women understand the value of commiseration while men simply want to "fix" things.

No brainer because it was directed by a man and all commentary and articles I’ve read about Midsommar so far have been by men, but how has no one caught a big mistake about how Maja is menstruating (hence menstrual blood in drink) but also has sex to conceive on the same day/week? The chances of a woman getting pregnant while on their period are super low and you’d think if they have one chance for her to get pregnant than they would time it for her peak ovulation…..why is this not addressed anywhere?!?

Pelle took those photos most likely with a phone that was purchased for him by the cult (they almost certainly have some money and income streams, we know for a fact they're sending people to college anyway like Pelle even if it's just to make friends to bring back typically for mating purposes... but every 90 years sacrificial purposes as well, apparently) and from there take pictures at the festival with the express intent of making the festival seem as normal and basically innocent as possible. The goal is simply to get the victims there, once they arrive at the village they're not leaving unless the cult allows them to. Forget running. They're in the middle of nowhere in a country that's foreign to them to begin with. Pelle is a master manipulator, something he is even honored by the cult at the very end for.
I called the suicide hotline once and they put me on hold and that was funny enough to keep me going another day. (This isn’t even a joke I ended up just calling a psychiatric hospital in my state and talking to a social worker)

@Elisa Castro I'm not sure where you live, but the US notoriously got rid of the majority of government-funded psychiatric facilities and de-funded psychology and therapy programs across the board several decades ago. Now most people with serious mental health issues (schizophrenia, bipolar, etc.) who don't have the medical insurance or other means to check into a private facility end up in prison or on the streets rather than rehabilitation.
Also, in the US conditions like depression and suicidal tendencies are equated to "sadness" and "weakness" and it's expected that you'll "get over it."
Dog God Yes, because depression isn’t as severe as schizophrenia or a mental illness of that magnitude. You still have control of your brain, somewhat. You’re just in intense despair.
