    I liked this movie a lot, but I can’t help but laugh every time I imagine what the doctor’s reaction must have been when he called to say that Fran was dead only to hear Marta go “that’s great news.”

      HAHAHAHA YES

    • @caggles
      @caggles Před 2 lety +66

      This is actually better explained in a deleted scene! It's another play on words - the doctor actually heard her say "that's GRAVE news" while Ransom hears "that's GREAT news" with the idea being that each person heard what they expected given the context. But because the final cut only shows the context of her lying about Fran being alive so the audience only hears the word "great" - it's supposed to be like the you/Hugh thing again. It just ended up getting cut for time, alas!

    • @Anetron1

    I don’t know if you noticed this, when Harlan told Richard “you tell her or I will” regarding him cheating on Linda, Richard inadvertently told Linda.
    1. When Richard went looking for the note from Harlan and saw it was blank, he took Harlan’s baseball and threw it out the window.
    2. Blanc saw the baseball and pocketed it
    3. When the dogs approached him, Blanc threw the baseball for them to play with
    4. Next time we see the baseball, the dog has it in his mouth and is being pet by Linda
    5. Linda notices the baseball as the one belonging on her dad’s desk, and goes to return it, leading her to find the note.
    Had Richard not throw the baseball, Linda might not have found the note. Thus, Richard did indirectly lead Linda to learning the truth, just like Harlan wanted.

    - my house

    I don't know if anyone else has said this but Meg is the only one in the family that actually cared about Marta from the door. She didn't hang up after Marta said she take care of her because that's all she cared about, she hung up because she wouldn't normally do that. It let Marta know that her family was trying to pressure her into getting the inheritance from her without actually telling her with words. I love Meg's character. She didn't even know her mom was stealing from her granddad, she just ended up being punished for it along with her mother.

    • @dialecticsjunkie7653
      @dialecticsjunkie7653 Před 2 lety +28

      I definitely think the phone-call scene showed the psychological pressure Meg's family put on her and that pressuring Marta wasn't Meg's own idea.
      But at the same time, that's the difference between Meg and Marta. Marta is an actual good person deep down, because she's willing to do the right thing even if it means putting herself on the line. That's how you know it means something. Whereas Meg buckles as soon as she is under pressure, even telling the family about Marta's mom (which Marta wouldn't do if the roles were reversed). To me even if you're a nice person, if you can't maintain your character integrity when faced with pressure, that puts a pretty big question mark next to your "niceness".
      Like, in my view, it doesn't matter how much you study social justice in college and how "progressive" your political beliefs are, if you can't stand firm to defend your friend's undocumented mother, then you've failed.

      if i'm going to be honest, she reminds me of those people who claim to be against capitalism and supports people in need (like marta, she doesn't need her help but she barges in) but in the end, she's just like one of her family. she's definetely not a victim but the film is meant to depict those pretend liberate who claim to protect the unprotected to only look better than the rest of her family but deep down, she is just like them, maybe milder than them.

      Yeah that was the only part that didn't seem to fit. We even see what someone overdosed looks like with Fran later. Why didn't Marta at any moment go "hold on, how are you feeling? are you having any symptoms?" and check his pulse or pupils or something. Idk, maybe she realized that at the end when she decided to go back to Harlan instead of running but was too late/slow to stop him from slitting his throat.

    • @MonAhgasInsomniAroELF
      @MonAhgasInsomniAroELF Před rokem +1

      @@fightingfaerie yeah, i don't think it's really a plothole because in that situation, you would be flat out panicking. it's not just "a super stressful situation" like op seems to think (i'm gonna go ahead and guess they've never experienced true panic or fear in their life lmao). you would have major adrenaline rushing throughout your body, and from how marta was reacting, she looked to be on the verge of a anxiety/panic attack, which i've experienced, and let me tell you; you are _NOT_ thinking rationally or reasonably at that time. all marta's brain is telling her is that he's going to die in minutes, her friend is dying, she's just killed someone, she's screwed and going to jail, career done, mom deported. she was panicking so hard she couldn't clearly remember his simple instructions. it makes perfect sense that marta didn't notice the symptoms (or lack thereof) at first.
      i think what you said works, after she'd done all that he asked and was going back in to talk to him, maybe she'd calmed enough (or had enough time to obsessively watch everything play out over and over again in her head, as tends to happen) to realize that he wasn't actually showing symptoms of an overdose and was about to suggest they not go through with the plan and she perform a quick checkup. and maybe harlan even knew by that point he was fine, but wanted to end things anyway (he's actually quite old, has to receive medical care and pain killers every single day, his family sucks and it seems like marta is his only real friend, maybe he's out of ideas for books--he seemed excited by a new method of murder when marta first told him she'd made a mistake that he wanted to write down--and so maybe feels like he has no more purpose/reason to go on). so he does the deed before she can stop him, and it really, truly was a suicide in every way. it all fits in really well with the rest of the story.
      also you and op should consider: nurses and caregivers are heroes and wonderfully selfless people, but they're still people at the end of the day. they make mistakes, sometimes they don't notice critical details. home nurses/caregivers especially are (in my personal experience) a little more likely to make mistakes because the environment is more relaxed, and they sometimes unintentionally become a bit complacent, especially when they've settled into a longtime routine with a patient who's had no outstanding issues ever pop up. marta's also a young nurse, probably hasn't been in too many big time emergency situations before. so even though she's had training for her first response to be questions about what he's feeling/experiencing, monitering his pulse, etc., this is (likely) her first big emergency and it's someone she considers a good friend to boot, so she's panicked, can't find the treatment (naloxone) for a situation like this, and now harlan's stopped her from calling the ambulance (which also needs to be done as soon as the mistake is made, even before/during checking the patient for symptoms, since she's the only other person in the room who can do it). she didn't stay in the room with him, which would have led her to notice he was showing no symptoms, she was out busy doing what he'd told her to--she left immediately after he instructed her because of the time limit. she only saw him again right before he unalived, so there was really no other opportunity to notice the absence of symptoms (unless--because it's possible--she was going over what had happened earlier and realized he hadn't really been showing any, hence my earlier theory that agreed with yours--maybe she was going back in to check and be sure, and was ultimately too late).

    If you haven't already you should check out the deleted scenes, there is just 2, but one reveals that Walter had been side investing and owed dangerous people money, he says in the interview his medical boot is from a bicycling accident but Blanc later presses Donna with the medical report that he was shot in the leg. So Walter was desperate for money. The second scene is Blanc talking to Joni after the will reading and mentions that he bought one of her Flam products and experienced a rash, did some online digging and found out her company is practically dead and she relies on money from Harlan. These we so neat and should have been included in the movie even as just a director's cut.

    Follow the baseball and it leads to Linda finding the letter. There are also other letters that look a little burned on the desk in her room when she talks about waiting for the “big reveal” to hint at the letter not being blank.
    The piano key that Blanc plays during the interviews is either to prompt the detectives into having the person being interviewed get back to relevant information OR to mark when they tell the truth about something.
    Blanc’s behavior throughout the whole movie shows the audience he knows from the beginning that Marta was involved. When they first meet he stares for a good second at her shoe which has the blood drop. That’s why he immediately tests to see if she can lie or not and why he’s actually keeping her close to him for the first half of the movie until he sees the dogs barking at Ransom, she was originally his main suspect!
    Marta doesn’t play by anyone’s rules or standards but her own which is set up in the game of Go. Harlan complains she always beats him and she responds she isn’t really playing the game, just trying to make something nice. In the same conversation Harlan says Ransom is too much like him. With Ransom later saying “I thought I was the only one who could beat him in Go” sets up Marta beating him in his murder plot since she didn’t play by Ransom’s idea of how people act and tries to save Fran, which is what leads to Ransom getting arrested.
    I watched this movie a few too many times if you can’t tell.

    I too think The Last Jedi is a great movie. I saw it in cinema and it made me tear up. Shame JJ Abrams had to fuck up with the next movie in theaters. Also this movie is GREAT Rian Johnson is so good!

    It was my second or third viewing of the movie that prompted me to finally make a list of my top 10 favorite movies, and I am still so gosh darn elated that a movie THIS new is on there. It isn't a super specific genre I really like, it isn't a franchise I follow closely (or ANY franchise) and nostalgia plays NO part in my adding it to the list.
    It's just a spectacular movie, through and through. It's something of a marvel, really.

    The first time I watched this, I was so caught up on how bad an idea it is to surprise-disinherit your kids that I missed a lot of cool stuff. (And I straight-up don't buy that Harlan would have disinherited his mother, despite the will containing no provision for her care.)

    I don’t actually think Katherine’s character, who plays Hannah in 13 reasons why was bad. I think she was the only good person because it was by circumstance-she was forced by her family to tell Marta that she ought to give the money to them. She was just a college student and didn’t ever go against her grandfather in any way.

    Meg was honestly the only one I liked from that family other than Harlan. She really didn't want to hurt Marta in anyway and was the only one to show any genuine concern for her well being after Harlan died. The only reason she called Marta and said what she said was because her family forced her to and Marta knew that because she's seen how they act in person.

    • @samiraansari5686
      @samiraansari5686 Před 2 lety +1

      So she was nice as long as there was absolutely no reason not to be, and as soon as she got a little bit of pressure from her family, she was willing to threaten Martha and rat out her undocumented mother. Don‘t see much genuine concern for anything but herself there.

    At first the way everything was going i was wondering if it was gonna turn out Harlans death was faked, that it just a test to see what everyone would do if he were to die and only Nana and Marta passed.
