I work as a diesel mechanic and have been abusing my icon sets for two years now and have had not one issue. Everyone can buy what they want im just putting in my two cents having used these tools in my trade and they have performed just as good as any tool truck brand my coworkers have.
They better than Quinn?
THEY ARE THE EXACT SAME well mostly, kinda, basically, almost. Lol
Thats how HF compares tools and usually everyone loves it what's wrong? Lmao
The handles looked the same to me!!
I bet if he would of went ahead and tried swapping out the internals but kept the outside plate the same, it would of transferred over.
Different handle, different switch, different head size, different finish, are they made in the same factory? Maybe, I'd even say probably. But they are not identical, merely similar
@@CPthetooladdict Harbor Freight doesn't say their version is "the exact same" in the ads-- they say "compare to" as CYA. You should have played the The Price is Right losing horn sound when you discovered that they are different now. If you had just said from the beginning (or reshot the video) that the cheap-o set is better, there wouldn't be a problem. However, you insisted that they were the exact same, even when holding two clearly different (but similar) ratchets side by side. It kind of undermines your credibility, no?
I work at a ford body shop, i can see how some snap on, mac tools etc. tools are goof to have. at the same time icon and the lifetime backed warranty is a great option and definitely for a new upcoming technician. i would rather spend less and have a good quality with lifetime over expensive and high apr tool truck pricing. icon is a good brand overall for this field.
To all the haters in the world I have agood amount of ICON, only bought with 20% off coupons. I also have Dayton, Craftsman usa Snap on, Diamond and Williams. I appreciate all the tools I have and do not abuse any of them. My worst tool is a good and important as the worst. Be proud of what you have and use it to your best ability, I still enjoy watching your channel weather I agree or not. jb
I love this comment at least you understand it's just my opinion and not a judgment of who anyone is and what tools they buy!! Thank you very much!!

EP Auto has a black case with a full 3/8 set from 8mm to 19mm deep and shallow as well as some SAE and a ratchet and extensions and wobble socket made in Taiwan and I have to tell you its great car kit very small size case with no wasted space, really awesome set. I was able to fit a gear wrench ratchet with a little modification to the case
Good video CP. But my icon comfort grip 3/8 is getting the job done for me and I haven’t had a need to replace it with another brand. I kinda want to get the 3/8 Wera zyclop set bcuz of the cool green color but I’ll keep waiting until this icon gives up. Love your videos
I'm happy your happy I have no problem with your choice I support you ❤️
I agree, the Icon back-drag - especially on the 1/4’s - is pretty bad; however, I’ve found that after using these for a few hundred rotations in either direction that they become much smoother.
Hello again CP
Thank you for another Great Video 👍 Thank you for introducing me to EP Auto Tools. Again thank you 😊
No problem 👍
Whenever i need to fix something in my house i run to harbor freight, their tools have always worked fine for me and at a much cheaper price than lowes or home depot but to each their own
HarborFreight has changed. I use to consider them one time use only . But for true pros I would stick name brands .But honestly it seems everything is cheaper these days. I think for the diy guy or anyone not worshiping tools some of these if not most are fine .
Agreed. I'm a pro tech who has been quite happy with my icon gear. Only had to replace a single chrome socket i used a gun on, replaced over a lunch break no questions asked. Grew up with my dad going to HF back in the 90's and lemme tell you, it was utter cheap-azz dog shiite back then. Times have changed. I don't take crap based on the name stamped on my tools, especially from the old timer in the shop who still owes $6k for his outdated scanner he never uses but pays $100/week for. Icon simply works, and works well enough for a pro. Also, we lost our snappy guy due to problems with corporate, so the old timer is out of luck when all his shiite breaks. The warranty is only as good as the guy on the truck and when the guy on the truck quits; well there is no guarantee corporate will fill that slot. S-O hasn't visited out shop in 4 months. We have multiple guys with piles of warranty products needed. So exactly what are you paying 4-6X for?

It's a harbor freight comparison that's what they do with snap-on all the time. They had to have some fun!! Lol
I remember when I first started working on cars as a teenager I only bought 1/2 stuff because I thought it was the best by default. Now I never use it unless I have to lol. I use 3/8 and 1/4 stuff for almost everything
I did pick this kit up from your link below 🔗

Thanks appreciate the support hope your dad loves it tools are a great gift!!
Harbor freight is like 1/5 the cost of snap on. No comparison. Big surprise there. I buy all my tools from harbor freight and haven’t broken a single one yet and have been able to complete every single task while keeping a lot more of my hard earned cash and if one ever does break I can return it for a new one free of charge with no hassle.
Thanks for sharing love always wins ♥️
Also no waiting for the truck to come around!
First time I have seen any video on this channel and I am a new subscriber. Very impressed with the information presented.
Thanks and welcome
So which tool brand would you recommend for a DIY home mechanic? I still have my old USA craftsman set but ratchets are pretty outdated. Nice thing about HF is you can walk in to exchange it if it breaks. New Craftsman stuff seems to be same quality as HF. Tekton is another option but online only. Also have a DeWalt 192 piece set that I keep in my truck. All made in Taiwan.
I personally like capri Tekton dynamic sunex MichaelPro these companies all charge fair prices and great online warranty services means I never have to waste my time buy and warranty with a click and a picture

Good video.. I do like my icon flex head ratchets quite a bit for the price and warranty. I have some snap on ones as well. I typically reach for the icons though. Had to warranty the 1/4 icon after a motor swap.. no questions asked just grabbed one and left. I believe there was a recall on the 1st generation ones. Had to warranty some snap on side cutters and wait 3 weeks and I don't think the guy was thrilled about me swapping them out
Thanks for sharing
Sounds like you have a scummy snapon dealer. They normally warranty those kinda tools no questions asked
I was a friend of Allen Smidt and remember well when his son Eric had him removed from the company. Allen never got over that and when he had a heart attack his son never visited him before he passed. Eric bills himself as the founder of HF but in actuality he stole the company from his father. Employees used to be treated well but that changed drastically with Eric and his greed. I will never give them another penny.
Awesome video brother. Thanks for sharing. Keep the content coming. Hope you have an incredible weekend. Much love and RESPECT

only problem with the EPauto where are you going to return it when it breaks? something to think about?,i have an allen socket set by EPauto seems ok,only icon tools i own are the 1/4 deep set that are all right but i don't like the extra material that doesn't allow some studs to go in deeper.
I've returned and warranted through Amazon but they have a address listed on the link in my description also.
Great vid. I picked up a Williams (taiwan made) 3/8 ratchet set for like $35. Exactly the same as my Blue-Point sockets and ratchet.
💯👍👍👍
I feel like you should of snapped a extension on the quarter inch rachet, just so it was clear that their wasn't any tomfoolery. I just went into harbor freight for the first time in over a year and grabbed a few things. They had some very nice looking xl racheting wrenches 20-25mm. $200 was a little steep though.

Hey C.P. Great video! I really don’t use H.F. Tools. When I was coming up in the game, H.F. Was complete junk. The late 99’s early 2k’s. H.F’s tools have improved but I choose to spend my cash elsewhere for much of the reasons you mentioned in the video. Now, I do have and use tools from all manufacturers. Predominantly Snapy-T and Matco. This being said the ICON tool Line is really nice when the price of the item is compared. 40$ compared to 100+$$ is the bottom line for most. Especially the young dudes starting out. I have used and do own a few icon tools and they do hold up and are quite niece. Thanks again for the video!👍🤙
CP, love your videos brother. You give us facts first then your opinion. I agree with for the most part....Snap on, Mac, Matco quality and strength are unmatched. Been a heavy truck mechanic for 30ish years. Some HF tools serve a great purpose, some I wouldn't dare to experiment with. Anyways, what's your knowledge/opinion about Vevor tools????
I appreciate that
Can you make a video on icon vs sunex vs capri impact sockets? What makes capri better then sunex? There's not much info out there about sunex vs capri
How do we know the metal is the same grade.i have broke some icon but man I was really abusing it
I own Gear Wrench ratchets, and they have been working for me just fine.
How would you rank the GearWrench 90 tooth ratchets I’ve recently picked some up on sale and they’re great comparing them to my other coworkers who use snap on, Matco and Icon. I did my search and gearwrench was on the top of the list of being great and affordable

Are the sockets icon sockets too?
Thanks for the tip, saving money is saving money!
Happy to help!
Icon and Pitrsburgh ratchets both have lifetime warranties that are hassle free. That kit is a good deal though but I bet there is no warranty
Lifetime warranty on.those tools as well
What hand tool doesn’t have lifetime warranty?. You won’t sell a hand tool without one
Thanks for the info CP!
No problem 👍
I cannot talk about the supplier for Harbor Freight but at one point I did work for Chervon in their office. What would happen they would put a run of tools and when that run was done the manufacturer would keep the stampings for the gears the bodies and everything and print their own sets at a cheaper price using much cheaper Steel also sometimes at the behest of the company itself they would set two identical sets of tools but paying $1.10 per pound for raw materials compared to 2.80 a pound for materials. same exact tools on the outside and inside. Different names and customers sold to.
Yes it's happened to me as well when I was a tool dealer
Been researching brands a bit. Im trying to figure out what is a good brand to go with for a decent mechanics set. Not planning on paying Snap-on/Mac price. IF you got maybe a top five picks you would go with for brands, that would be awesome. So I guess Im looking for a good mid to near top quality that wont break the bank that is a good option that isnt over the top in price. Was watching Project Farms channel, where he breaks/torture tests many brands. Seems almost all brands have weakness in either their wrenches and drives. Mostly done craftsman, and Its got me by, but want decent set that will hold up that is bigger. Seems many are being made by same makers with slight differences in looks. What do you think of the Duralast tools from AutoZone?
Gear wrench, capri, tekton, sunex, are all good quality brands in my experience been a heavy equipment tech for 5 years, started out with the above brands and have bought snap on since, but there wasn’t a thing wrong with the other brands I just wanted to “spoil myself”
I prefer the Springfield flavor, but own a couple Ruger's to. Thanks for the video. Not gonna lie I just ordered one of the EPauto sets to throw in the wife's car so I'd have something to use just in case.
Good choice!
But a better car, must be a "Domestic"
I think the one thing everyone here is missing is that all off these Asian ratchets are to some degree a Snap On Knock off. They're an obvious copy of the original Snap On design developed over 70 years ago.
The key to whether or not these cheaper ratchets are worth owning is whether or not they hold up to daily use in the real world. Any manufacturer can copy a design or blueprint but if its made from substandard materials or fails to follow the same design tolerances its either going to fail or simply fail to perform at the same level of the original.
Before I'd spend $70 on two ratchets from Harbor Freight, or any amount for a cheap Chinese tool I'd opt for a good used Snap On, Mac, Matco, or even Craftsman. I've pretty much built up the better part of my tool collection over the years by buying used, most of which I acquired at local flea markets, estate sales, and yard sales.
HF has a purpose, but I can't see them as a top quality tool supplier. I've always used HF tools as sort of the disposable tools in my tool box, their the wrenches that you grind or weld on to make a special too, their the tools you use when your working on a boat and likely to drop them into the deep. I don't see them as a good place to spend real money on tools that are nothing but polished Chinese copies.
It's so funny that only very few can understand like you!!
So anyone who bought that Ep Auto ratchet set when you warranty that ratchet they'll just send you an Icon as replacement😂
Lmao
So what you’re saying is that every single time they do an update fixing the current problem you have to go out of your way and destroy your tools and bring the entire set back so messed up but they’re forced to just give you the new generation???? As per your instructions
Yep unfortunately

I feel like you could hold most ratchets up and you could see a resemblance in all of them it doesn’t mean they came from the same company maybe someone is just getting a kickback if they sell the other set if I break one of those Amazon tools they’re not just gonna be replaced
Same manufacturer 1000%
As a comebacker to the auto repair business, and I have used harbor freight tools to build and maintain my son's racecar for the past six years. I can say I'm not opposed to or worry about using icon or Pittsburgh daily in the profession. I sold majority of my Mac and Snap-On stuff 13 years ago when i left the repair industry due to my wife having medical troubles with her pregnancy. I guess im just a small town lug that doesn't understand the hate / debate about hf and tool truck stuff. They both get the job done.

22 years turning wrenches, I'm done with tool trucks! Inevitably the tool breaks the day after the truck is at the shop, the next week the tool is not on the truck, two weeks after that the tool MIGHT show up. Ain't nobody got time for that!!!The amount of Harbor Freight tools in my box has increased over the years as I wait for my "quality" replacements to arrive several weeks later. Why would I pay 3-4 times as much for the same warranty and poorer quality service?! Don't even get me started on the tool boxes! 10k plus in debt on a home for your tools?! But whatever floats yer boat right?
Your abusing the tools none of my snapon has ever broken also nobody pays full list on snapon boxes
Well here's the real test, break the ratchets and go see what the warranty process is like in the store, and through Scamazon.
For 35 dollars I can by 4 sets and still be money ahead without warranty just saying
@@CPthetooladdict an a nice pile of broken tools 😏
You literally walk in and get a new one. They scan it, and you leave.
How about moving the switch on the 1/4 in icon ratchet from the center to on or off.
This mite be the dumbest comment yet to date.
I can't lie that the EpAuto is a great deal, but I recently saw a video of somebody opening both ratchets up and looking at the internals. The EpAuto, while similar to the icon, had a smaller pawl, and maybe even two very small pawls (If I remember correctly) while the Icon had a single pawl that was a decent size. In the video, the reviewer concluded that the Icon looks like it'd hold up a lot more than the EpAuto.
Thats subjective I have a video coming out that will break this down more.. it's hard to argue the price for 40 bucks vs 200 it's 3x the price I don't think it's 3x the tool.
Thank you ceee peee , I just purchased 3 sets
No problem!!
What kind of warranty does EPAuto have though? I doubt if I break something I can drive down the street and swap it out. Warranty and convenience gets factored into price as well.
Lifetime
You should make a video trying to see if the head kit or parts are swapable with snap on. The face plates look the same as the icon.
Definitely will
Can’t remember where I saw this same comparison. Someone else on CZcams did hold those next to each other and did show the same part number stamped in.
You can buy koken brand socket sets for about $45 and the equivalent 3/8” ratchet for about $55. With those options I would never do business with HF
1000% agreed with Ko-ken for the win
I'll admittedly call myself a harborfreight fan boy. But I've always felt that the icon line was over priced I bought gear wrench instead and have to admit it was a good idea I have one 3/8 drive snap-on set for those hard to reach spots everything else gets a pittsburgh on it the 3/8 swivel head is my go to
Well at least you can admit it and not be ashamed of it so I applaud you for sticking up for what you want!
I found out the hard way that if you want to warranty ONE socket, you must bring in the WHOLE set. Well I lost a socket so guess what? Can't get it warrantied. Never experienced that before at HF, for non-Icon tools it's a trouble free swap out.
Pretty dumb if you ask me and very poor warranty protocol
So were the "guts" different or did I miss it?.....If the levers are reversed the guts have to be different, correct?
I'm going to open them up on a different video
I'll preface this by saying I don't really buy or enjoy harborfreight all that much ( i think the icon hose picks are the only harborfreight in my work box). Harbor freight has its place. My shop doesnt provide cconsumables so the ability to get cheap ones from HF really helps. HF also saved my bacon all the time when i was an apprentice in high school with no money. I also go there for cheap junk i only intend to use once or twice and in just about all those cases i feel i have more than gotten my moneys worth. I appreciate high quality professional tools, but i dont have a problem with HF. Honestly, if i was. DIYer, I would probably be there far more often.
Those icon hose picks are awesome. So awesome that 2 of them disappeared out of my box and never seen again 🤣 i dont think there's much wrong with harbor freight tools. There's certain things I dont go there for such as precision tools, punches, files, and ratchets. I absolutely hammer their 3/8 sockets and yet to have one break using them on my Cornwell rebrand IR9000 1/2 inch impact. Certain hand tools a splurge on every now and then on the tool truck but that gets expensive quick and imo the price isn't worth it most of the time.
Whats the Epauto's return warranty for broken tools ? Is it lifetime no questions ask like ICON ?

I wish he would have opened it up. Maybe the gears would have been better on the Icon. Sometimes, you have to look under the hood to know what you have.
HF is doing same thing Matco is, taking someone else's tool slapping their name on it and charging a premium. I'm sure the cost increase also includes the warranty they offer.
“ it’s the same exact thing”
“ esauto is better”
The craftsman gunmetal 120 tooth ratchets are the same price and much better products. But honestly there is not a big enough qualitative difference between the Pittsburgh pro ratchets and icons to warrant the extra cost. The switches are oriented differently which is a pain but they still work well enough.

I saw the mrsub short on the ratchets. So I bought Epauto just to see if it was true. Only problem is, I don’t have any icon ratchets. So far they are nothing like my gearwrench, tekton, olsa, etc. I must say, the Epauto sockets in that set are identical to the olsa sockets. A lot of tools are shared through other tool companies. Like gearwrench, Sata, Matco, are almost positively out of the same factory. Apex tools.
💯 brother appreciate the great comment!!
Comparing prices is kinda misleading. It's not just "mark up" because they want to make money. The Harbor Freight stuff has to cost more because they have to pay for the brick and mortar store, pay employees, management, all the bills that go along with a physical store, computer systems, etc., where the EV Auto (or whatever it was called) is most likely completely virtual and drop shipped directly from a manufacturer or importers warehouse. It's cheaper because there is no overhead.
Yes drop shipped from the same manufacturer as harbor freight way to contradict the statement lol
Picked up the EPAuto set after watching this video and I must say that the set is very nice, and the price ($35) is even nicer. Thank you for shedding light on this. I never would've bought Icon tools because I don't see the value, but the EPauto set will definitely get some use.
Totally agree!

Many companies rebrand their tools. Apex tools is a well known company that make a lot of the tools that are rebranded especially as professional tool brand names such as Cornwell, and MATCO as an example.
Dude, claims that they are identical, then shows that they really aren’t conspiracy that gotta love them
That's what every idiot says about harbor freight vs. snap-on, at least these are actually built in the same factory 🤡
Honestly you could probably dig up dirt on any CEO of the giant tool companies. As for rebranding all these companies do rebranding that nothing new. You can walk into harbor freight and get it warrantied so why would you wand to deal with scamazon
Being blessed with made in USA Craftsman set my dad gave me over 20 years ago I have not used either of these tools but just seeing them in your hand I can see that they are not the same… maybe somewhat similar as both say 90 tooth howeve different sizes and shapes and even the switching mechanism is different and appear to be opposite. If you had said either was a good tool or not or equal based on testing but your claims are wrong based on the “eyeball “ test.
How's that ep auto/Amazon warranty?
Lifetime
Idk why people compare the two. They are in a different ball park. A 3/8s snap on ratchet cost more then the 3 items you bought at harbor freight. Let's compare a lambo to a civic. Great idea.
Agreed 1000%
Same two ratchets and a pair of pliers from Snap On is $300 not including shipping and tax.
Used to love HF, but like most places have rasised prices way to much. With the tool prices there might as well by craftsman
What about sunex, brand. I have all 1/4" and 3/8" sockets, that are impact and chrome combo. Used and still have for 24yrs plus. Harbor Freight has improved there quality. I will agree, they're not up there with snap-on or matco. I have only broken 1 or 2 sunex and a few of Harbor Freight stuff. Just throwing that out there.
My sunex have been solid also
