As someone just starting to get into the hobby, I cannot begin to express how much I appreciate this guide. You have saved me so much worry and stress over exactly what paints I needed to buy and what I should be looking for during the process. I really fell in love with the color scheme of the pre-heresy Emperor's Children, so discovering the Sons of the Phoenix are such a blessing. Again, thank you for being an unexpected gift during this hectic time. Good luck in all your painting and stay healthy; I look forward to seeing your own Sons complete. And perhaps if I'm lucky you'll have a Dreadnaught or Aggressors in the future.
Thank you for your kind words! You can check out my Sons of the phoenix showcase video, I actually have some aggressors there :)
This was very nicely done. And as a son's of the phoenix painter, it's always nice to see them get some attention. keep it up!
Thank you! The more sotp painters the better!
Guess who’s on time today boys... THIS GUY! Also, yeah, an oil wash video would be sick!
What a Mad Lad! I hope that especially you will enjoy this one
Zumikito Miniatures I always do my man!
looks fantastic!
excellent tutorial! thanks!
Oh hey! That's the chapter I'm slowly working through as well.
I’m loving your tutorials. Detailed but concise. Looking forward to your oil wash one!
Thanm you, comments lile this always make me happy! I will do it once I finish with this marine :)
I love the video, I like to see that even someone experienced like you dose those annoying little mistakes from time to time, most people cut that and I’m feeling more dump for still doing them. Just seeing they are part of the hobby makes it easier to accept and just clean things, thanks a lot!
That looks so good. Great job!
Thank you! I appreciate it
19:03 - For plasmas its good to do a "reverse dry brush" The ridges are "cooling" ridges like a heat sink so they should be a darker blue and the valleys should be lighter. really gives a great effect that the glow is deep inside the gun. so many people just highlight the ridges with white, but if you do the opposite it looks sick and you nail the "heat sink" glow effect.
I figured out white paint and ardcoat after not getting my wyches' faces right, glad to see I wasn't crazy! That's some serious brush control nice work
Thank you so much for doing a real step by step tutorial. I always get so down on myself during the recess shading section because of how dirty my model gets, but it was really reassuring to see that you had to clean up your model as well! Great tutorial :)
I am glad to hear that, thank you! I wish that there was a way to shade them without going back (like oil washing without the varnish) but honestly this just looks the best imho
Incredible work.
I am really glad that you like it!
I'm so happy, i love the armor, white and purple are my favourite colors so i loved this video :3 thank you
You are more than welcome! :)
Really dig the videos, new fan here! Best of luck, and keep on keeping on!
Thank you, I am always glad to see that people find them helpful!
That gloss-highlight tip is great. Thx a ton!
Here is another one: use white from daler and rowney to mix with your white :)
Great video mate. Thank you for making and sharing it.
I am glad that you like it, let me know if you have any criticism
@@Zumikito Noooo, definitely no criticism!
Thank you!
You are just amazing! You are THE BOSS
Haha, thank you, but I am simply a guy who paints plastic figures and happens to make some videos on that subject 😂
These colors make me suspect that we haven't even seen this space marines final form.
Goku marines will have to come to stop them
Great tutorial! I really like that you also talk about fixing mistakes and the necessity of applying paint several times to get a smooth result. When I started in this hobby I saw a lot of CZcamsrs recess shading and edge highlighting seemingly in seconds. I felt like I’m doing something wrong because I always had to get back to fix mistakes... now I know that it’s completely normal and part of the process. Sorry for rambling ;) looking forward to more tutorials!
Glad to hear it :) fixing the mistakes I make on my space marines is 30-50% of my painting time on them 😅
Great work 😊
Thank you!
Thanks for this. currently using your video to paint my own while stuck in lockdown in the uk, would love to see a video showing you completing other details please!
Do not worry that is coming soon! :)
I hesitate using sons of the phoenix or regular ultramarine color scheme... My painting lvl is : total noob. Any suggest(s) ?
Would love to see a guide as detailed as this on a harlequin model.... Your work is superb.. Love the 5 min quick vids too
I am not sure if I am coming back to these complete tutorials where I paint miniature from start to finish, I feel like more people benefit when I cover more broad of a topic! Though contact me if you need something :)
That's amazing.
Also you have a stellar beard!
Thank you!
Can’t wait to see how you did that gold!
oh man, you are gonna love the next video!
Oil wash vid please, love your content keep up the great work!
alrighty, that will be coming in the future!
Frieza Marines. THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL FORM!!
The real question is: are there Goku Marines too? Hmm 🤔
@@Zumikito Space Wolves Wulfen? Big spiky hair, bare arms
Good tutorial, really helped me with my minis.
I also painted the helmet gold though because I'm a rebel.
Hey, as long as you like it! :)
@@Zumikito I think it might be a bit too over the top to give it to all of em but I'll keep them on the sergeants to make them stand out
Excellent video, Thanks! Would love to see the oil wash video as well, please.
Oil wash is seen in my "shade your Space marines 5x faster" video :)
Really nice paintjob! Maybe you could try glossy Agrax Earthshade on a gloss varnished basecoat for the shading part, easier to get the shade in the recesses and less clean up I think.
Funny, coz I talk about that in my wash experiment! Anyway, it would have had slightly different finish
Thank you
Great video, and explanations!
How did your Genestealer Purple stay so purple? When I paint mine it looks lavender in colour, no matter how many coats I do!
Your commentary about autism is adorable. I'd love to see you do a collaboration with Vince.
Highlighting is so hard! i always thought i was a shit painter but i really underestimated it when all these painting videos say: "Have Patience"
i mean yes you all weren't kidding, a loooooooooooooot of patience!
Great for my Robotech RPG Tactics Varitech fighters
Frieza, is that you?
You know I wonder how an oil pin wash would work, super thin? I have had good results for basing and on Orks (with blue-green of course)
I have been trying a clean white and just keep failing. I have a new love for your marine army well done.
Cheers my friend!
Hi, do you remember which colors you used for the bases on this army? They look really good!
Holy shit that is KRISPY!
Thank you! :)
Came for the paint job, subscribed because of the south park clip lol
I see you are a man of culture as well.
Hi zumi :) did you tried to shade your white armor with blue shade ? Ultramarine shade for ex
Please make a video on oil washing for making armies
I didn't really get this, did you use ulthuan grey or coras white for the base now?
Great video! I want to try painting a Sons of the Phoenix Marine now too. Curious, Can I just use Corax White instead of Ulthuan Gray?
Sure you can, it can work since corax white is not as bright as mentioned whites, so there is still room for edge highlights
Hey man, loved your videos... from a youtuber point of view they are great! May i ask you where did you get musics and sounds effects? I'm really in difficult getting free good stuff, did you buy them?
Thank you for your kind words, I use Epidemic Sound which is fantastic since you can take a song a take just melody/drum/bass etc from it (you can get mp3 of each stem), also has so many sound effects, I am sure that this is worthwhile investment :) hit me up on facebook/insta if you want to talk about it.
Can you tell me which brushes did you used in this video ? I looking for a good ones and i see that brush used in shading and highlighting is what i need :D
I always use Da Vinci Maestro series 35, those are wonderful
It turned out Grey!
What brush does he use for the lenses?
Great video!
Did you freehand the Squad markings and such or are those decals?
all decals, I will talk about them in future videos aswell, even how to apply them etc.
Zumikito Miniatures Looking forward to that!
Thanks for the quick reply
Love this, what sizes maestro do you recommend
00, 1 and 2 are my go to
Were you ever considering using oil based washes to paint the recesses on the mini? It's mixed white spirit and oil paint. The way they fill the recesses is just magic, but the paints and white spirit are pretty toxic.
Yes, I even have video comparing the methods :) sure is great for speedpainting, but for the best pieces not so much as it still gets everywhere and has to be cleaned with the spirit
New to warhammer so I don't know. But what colour primer should you use for this? White? Thanks for the great video
Hi, sure, white primer works well, and you will paint over it anyway, so the exact tone doesn’t matter
@@Zumikito Thanks so much. I’m going to try it with my Custodes. I love the look of gold and white
Is it normal for Ulthuan Grey to be a bit watery even when it's literally off the store shelve? Also, I watered it down exactly how it is in the video, but it leaves a very bone dry feel when I brush my thumb against it; is that normal as well?
That could mean your paint settled and dried up. You might want to mix it with flow improver or a mix of destilled water, acrylic medium and a little paint brush tip of dishwasher soap. When you’ve done that, you might want to add a little metal bead or a bolt nut to it before you shake the hell out of the bottle. There are vortex mixer for paint bottles, but a vibrating massager does the same job
Second comment, Did you ever try the watered down Rhinox Hide for the shading instead of Agrax Earthshade?
That is 100% possible without a problem if you are blacklining it
so corax white question. I used corax white spray and it went grainy and chalky. I shook it and even heated up the can in warm water. It's been humid where i live. Mephiston red spray went on smooth and so did mr surfacer 1000 spray. My vallejo german grey spray also went grainy and chalky. I tested some of my cans to see whats going on. Im pretty sure the corax white sprayed fine before. Any advice? thank you. i ended up stripping my alpine figure with 99% rubbing alcohol and toothbrush. it worked quite well.
I have to say that I am very distruting of primer cans nowadays, so I stick to using airbrush for priming for now. I would love to be helpful here, but this is a struggle I face myself as well!
@@Zumikito i finished watching you paint the white space marine very nice btw (in borat accent) I also seen in one of your first videos you primed with a can in corax white and it turned out nice im assuming (hard to see fine details on camera) and in the video where you paint the space marine you say you sprayed it with corax white so i assumed with a can. Im pretty sure it used to spray with no problems. im gona try it on a non humid day and if it still sprays chalky n gritty ill just get a tamiya primer or mr hobby surfacer. I don't have an airbrush
My first project after 10 years will be space marines from the chapter the sons of the phoenix. I think they look freakin awesome, and your style of painting those is just amazing!! But now while i think about all the stuff that i need and all the steps that i need to take to paint the miniatures, theres a small question. Isnt it actually easier to airbrush the white ? Or why did you choose to paint those with the brush ? Greetings and thank you for those great videos ! EDIT: would be cool if you could create a discordserver, its free and a good way that your community can share pictures of miniatures and so on :)
Thank you for the kind comment! I am sure that discord will be coming in the future. I have chosen brush to show thar it is no big issue, but airbrush is faster for sure!
@@Zumikito Thank you for the fast answer!
00:04:32 "You can use any paint you want to create a wash"
would you shade them with watered down Genestealer purple to tie the white to the purple?
I mainly meant some darker shades: for example you can just water down abaddon black or rhinox hide to wash the recesses. I would not use purple since it could create weird visual effect when you have it already on the miniature. Naggaroth night would be better, but in general I like black and brown shades for white (maybe blue and grey in some cases)
@@Zumikito Thanks. With weird effect you mean the miniature would get a "glow" in purple in this example?
What about shading in the same color? For example shading red with watered down red mixed with black instead of shading with pure black/brown shade?
@@19platten20 not glow, it would just be weird in my opinion since your white shade would be the same color as the purple armor midtone. Yes you can add some black to the main color to shade it!
Fuck me lol the amount of work that goes into these painted minis is unreal
Trying my best here :)
@@Zumikito I was looking at starting painting miniatures mate and I have no chance haha, think I'll find a different hobby 😉 amazing skill you have
My dude where did you get your transfers from they look sick!
Gold or black ones?
If I started a darker grey like that of the contrast primer how much harder is it to get to look white?
I see 2 minor issues - contrast primer is a little bit thicker and it is darker. If you are willing to sacrifice crispness of some details, it would just take some more additional layer of ulthuan grey, it does cover well fortunately, so it is doable :)
curious where did you get the laurels for the helmets?
This was in the pack, it's the default helmet for this miniature
I think you don't need varnish before applying oils! 😃 I tried it and it is fine!
Tried it and doesn't really work with some paints as I have discovered, weird
Hi, do you have a solution for white armour in a dark room with some lieght ressources? So that it looks like that the lights light the armour and the rest is in the shadow?
If you paint the miniature which actually has a dark room around it, sure (diorama). Either way, it will look grey for the most part a you can go super bright on the exposed parts. If you have a reference point (dark room) it is not an issue
@@Zumikito and how can i paint the lighter parts with the light source reflections? My tryouts are looking like shit if i try to paint the light reflection from a fire on white armour.
@@j.t.trumpler2475 google The Huns at a camp fire - there are people who actually have quite a lot of white on them, but because of the surroundings it looks more sepia grey. Now that might now suit your dark room, but you might go for more blueish or something like that, the point is that you can not simply go for white, but you need some grey which is tinted in some way
What do you think about using the gloss version of earth shade?
Could work for having easier time recess shading, but once done, you need to use matt varnish so the recesses do not reflect
Wouldn't an oil wash and a q-tip be faster for lining?
Yes, absolutely - it would perhaps like 10x faster (or more), since you don't need to fix anything by going back to ulthuan grey. At the time though, I didn't have good experiences with oil wash
What size brush do you use for the shading at 4:40?
That is size 00 from davinci maestro series 35
Where do you buy your brushes?
Best regards and nice work!
My local shop, it's da Vinci maestro series 35
What color of metallic paint do you recommend using on the joints?
So as mentioned in the video, you dont need to go metallic for that, if you do, you can go with leadbelcher, but nowaday I use vallejo air steel (one of the best steel paints imho) and you can mix it with black ink to make it darker
The only feedback I have is that I’ve just had a panic attack watching you paint this
I don’t believe in my wildest mini dreams I could paint this well
Uh oh, thank you, this is not even that good!
@@Zumikito
Well then, I’ll try my best to get to your ‘not that good’ paint level
This might be obvious but is it ulthuan grey or white scar you paint over the basecoat with?
Ulthuan layer over the primer (so it's my basecoat) edge highlights with white scar
@@Zumikito Thanks for the clarification ❤
This is pretty good, but why not start with the purple and then hit up your white layers to clean up?
If you are neat enough, it does not really matter that much, I just wanted to finish the biggest part of the miniature first
for the white highlight, have you tried adding white INK to the normal paint?
You can add white ink to your regular white to thin it down and keep it saturated, works great!
Nuln oil gloss behaves a bit like an oil wash, would be much faster than using agrax.
There is still gloss version of agrax, though you will need to varnish the mini afterwards since you dont want your shades to be all shiny
just one question, why not paint the lances befor starting highliting the armor at all?
Sure, that is an option and makes no difference :)
Can't believe they discontinued the corax white spray
any chance I saw these in WIP on /tg/?
unlikely, I don't post on 4chan
why bother going back with ulthuan grey if you're based it with corax white? would skipping this step be fine as there's not much of a change in colour?
It is just sprayed with coray white, not basecoated. Either way, sprays have always slightly different color anyway, so I recommend doing that
Where is that beautiful helmet from?
That is standard lieutenant helmet :) it comes with the miniature
@@Zumikito Oh awesome thank you !! :)
Hi mate! Quick question - are you from Poland?
Hi! I am Czech actually :)

Zumikito Miniatures a perfect green salamandre armor eavy metal style
@@mrtoucan3602 I am afraid that my schedule does not include that for now :(
I gave this a like...then took it back after the autism comments
you shouldn't keep dragging paint over a section you just went over, it will lift up the partially dried paint and you'll have clumps all over the surface
"Since I'm pretty much autistic at this point". I've never related more.
At the fucking cleanup i make a bigger mess
Hey Zumikito minatures, Absolutely adored the video but as a person with autism, those kind of remarks can be hurtful, I know you didn't mean anything by it, But I thought I'd point it out
Hi Conor, as far as I know I haven't been disrespectful or rude - I was pointing out my obsessive behaviour. If those words came out wrong or hurt you, I am sorry, because that was clearly not the intention!
corax "grey" and im out.....
Well that is also a possibility I guess!
Not the toilet paper
Ah yes, the toilet paper ahahaha!
So YOU stole all of the toilet paper
Dang, Now I know where all the Toilet paper went. Dang you people and your home made toilet paper wet palettes.

@@Zumikito its not so much an issue here anymore, Just the people who make it an issue and buy half the toilet paper the stores have in stock when they are not limiting it per person.
where's the oil wash video? lots of people want it. we are all on the autistic spectrum your degree of autism makes for some stellar marines. are you sure you didn't mean OCD?
It was a joke! But yes, I have very minor OCD. The oil wash video is the one where I am comparing shading methods - Shade your space marines 5x faster
