I like the concept and will be watching to see how it evolves into an actual product. The question I have is about the batteries usability when the trailer is in storage at home. If you give this the capability for the trailer's battery to act as a home backup battery (similar to what the F-150 Lightning can do) that would be a huge selling point.
Great concept @coolcat312. There would be ideal for disaster power back up of a house. Really depends on the battery size. My house would take about 12Kw a day so if this about 50kw it would be perfect.
Also energy recuperation when in slope
@@wesrobinson7366 From the looks of that battery animation the battery would be 2x 75Kwh roughly. Coupled with solar? You would never see another energy bill.
As someone in the EV business, being able to leverage an EV battery to assist with home power needs is not a technical feat at all, it’s just a simple low cost option. The better answer for home power is a home battery and/or a generator, but I understand the appeal. It makes more sense in trucks simply because trucks will have bigger batteries and folks the drive trucks, like myself, appreciate this type of feature more in general. The truth is that homes are terribly inefficient as they were never designed to run off anything but stable, limitless grid power, so any EV battery will only provide minimal support for today’s home power needs.
Yall, if this could charge an electric vehicle then it is perfect. Talk about a nice back up charging station.
I'm not an RVer but this is very cool. It would be great if you could triple the solar panel capacity by making a stacked set of panels where the top one could stay in place while the two below it could slide out to opposite sides with motors. The two that slide out would also serve as awnings.
Pure 💩?
There’s a competitor that has that idea incorporated into their concept. Definitely an interesting concept, especially if you have an electric vehicle with the muscle, but not the towing range. Would look good behind a Cayenne ha.
GREAT idea!

Airstream, you’ve got a winner here. Please don’t rest on the “it’s only a concept” idea for long, get it into production. You have interested buyers, myself included.
2 years later 1/29/24 nothing to show yet 😂 I hate when companies do this. How about don’t show it until it’s ready or close to it’s release
I guess they have to do this to see the market reaction.
As if we weren't already in love with Airstream you put new dreams into reality! This looks incredibly promising!
This is truly a game changer, this is the future of RV. ❤️💕❤️@airstream thank you for allowing us to make a video 📷 inside this beautiful RV.
Great concept. I'd love to see this technology applied to a small 14'- 15' trailer.
Cargo trailer also!
There is no such thing.
@@jacktracy4845oh reeaalllly? I don’t thiiink so
This concept is awesome. It is such a great idea that solves many issues with towing and giving you more power for longer when you are at the campsite (dry camping). I would buy one 💪🏻
Many many issues that shall not be named. Except, the obvious.
This is bloody brilliant! Very well thought out feature set and great innovation. Can't wait for this to be a production model, especially if the technology is worked into your slightly larger models. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, Rory! ⚡️
@@Airstream-Inc You folks better start lining up the manufacturing and supplies for this. Its going to hit you a lot sooner than you think. As in probably as soon as this economic downturn corrects. Demand for EV Pickups is a lot stronger than anticipated.
YES. This is the direction we should be going! Thank you for pushing this forward!
As a 22 Sport owner, this very much looks like the next generation to me. I love the way you integrated existing automotive components to bring the features together. If you can produce this for the market and keep the price bump to the $20-25K range, you will have plenty of new and existing customers lining up.
$20-25k? Lol. This trailer has its own drivetrain and enough lithium batteries to power a house. I promise you're not getting it for less than $100k over a standard Airstream.
@@andychops yeah I’ll be dust before the price is low enough for me to afford!
@@andychops He said price bump to add drive train and battery for 25k which will put it current price of 65k+25k around 90K. I still think it will be at least 125K as companies have learned to milk early adaptors.
Yeah, $200k -250k, you missed a "0" buddy 😉
@@aw_overland I bet there will be tiers to the battery capacity and amount of power. Weekend warriors who don't go as far could save a lot of money on the same trailer, just with smaller capacity and power.
I love everything about this!
I can’t wait to see the Estream being pulled by a silver Rivian R1T.
Wow! This is a fantastic concept and look forward to seeing the production model. Being able to go more off grid is critical and what more people want to do as campgrounds and RV parks stay so full. Love Airstream, keep up the great work!
Thank you! ⚡️
In reality this is going to be an absolute nightmare. Until it is a long proven product I wouldn't touch it with your money. It is hard enough to find quality people to fix travel trailers that haven't changed in 50 years. This type of technology is going to require a very high level, highly trained technician. Not some guy that knows how to repair a 7-pin connector. Think about it. You've spent ten's of thousands of $ to get the education needed for this type of tech, basically an engineering degree and you're going to work at an Airstream dealer? Probably not. Manufactures love to tell us how wonderful new technology is but the reality new technology comes with years of issues until the manufacture can iron them out.
I love the concept. However I really question the ability of the trailer to have its own drive motors.
Instead, I’d rather use its large battery bank to potentially extend the range of the tow vehicle.
To me, that would reduce the complexity of the drive system.
That's literally what they are accomplishing. The trailer only drives on its own motors when it needs to park itself (easier than parking it with a vehicle)
The aero adjustments to the body reduce drag, making it more efficient to tow. The electric platform and motors will help extend the range of the vehicle that is towing it (Most likely an EV as well)
Without the motors in the trailer it could not park itself, the batteries would then essentially be dead weight as they are heavy.
Source: I was a lead designer on this project.
@@untitled795 Thank-you for the reply and I understand what you are saying.
From a cost point of view, I don't really value the trailer being able to park its self. If it was an option that I was paying for, I wouldn't do it. That's just my honest feedback. I also imagine that if I was towing this, it is important to have a proper towing vehicle, once sized correctly for the load behind it.
I agree that I would probably be using a EV, but in my mind that would be a Truck EV like a F-150 Lightning or Tesla CyberTruck. Since I don't value the expense of a drive train on the trailer I would rather be able to utilize the trailer's battery pack to direct supplement the battery in the tow vehicle.
Is this the right way to think about this? I'm not sure. It was just my initial reaction.
@@chrismehling9968 I know that they really tried getting the press images with the F-150 lightning rather than the models X, but I know it didn’t pan out from Ford’s side either. At the end of the day I think they went with “EV trailer needs EV car towing it” approach
As for the self parking, I think it hits a demographic of people who do value that convenience (which is really all it is, admittedly). They say the whole outdoors camping movement is on a rise, and this feature alone would indoctrinate a bunch of people who just wouldn’t want to deal with all the technicalities (it is what it is, no matter your view on that)
Cost is a huge aspect of this concept, which is why they go out of their way to make sure customers will have a realistic impression of what features would make it into a production version. This specific concept involves all the offerings of what a Trailer could accomplish on its own if given an EV platform, which is a really cool case study and it was a joy working on it I must say!
This is mostly engineering spiel and I’m a designer, so not the best to get an answer out of but that’s the info I was aware of.
I
@@untitled795 maybe you can talk to the engineers and ask them if they can make the charge port bidirectional.
It would be good, not only to feed electricity, but to also be able to charge an EV.
At least put a 240v outlet or a few 120v outlets on the exterior to charge an EV and other stuff without going inside.
@@untitled795 thank you.love it
I really need this! I almost bought an Airstream last year, but when I learned about how silly the power/fuel situation was going to be, I decided to wait until someone redesigned it. So sweet!
I have a Tesla model X and I am really excited about this product. Range anxiety is a huge issue for me and we have been watching all kinds of videos of people doing the experiments of how far you can pull what trailer before we buy. My wife and I were to the point of settling on a teardrop which really isn’t ideal but much better than tent camping. This, however, raises the bar to luxury capability for full time living in retirement. I would love to be a test dummy for this product to take it through its paces. Campgrounds, off-grid, extended living… let’s get moving. :)
Where do you plan on getting off grid in a Tesla? 🤦🏻♂️
@@bennyboyellis within range of a supercharger.
@@emerybarg6424 A normal 22 foot airstream has a GVWR of 5000 lbs. The batteries in this trailer will easily add over 1000 lbs. Cybertruck maybe....Model X not gonna happen.
@@19kcolg If they do this right it will make it to where the GVWR is less important if its under its own power for accel / braking and stabilization
I am not a fan of Cybertruck aesthetically but will totally get one just for this eStream~ Matching metal shells🤩
Wow, this is impressive to see you thinking of the future in this manner. I think it has a lot of potential in many ways. Keep it up. I love the built in HUGE battery bank and solar charging, quick charging, and the remote control is super awesome. Nothing more intimidating then backing a trailer into a spot with a TV.
Thank you very much!
This is a really wild, innovative, and cool idea - bringing select, electric automotive-like capabilities to a travel trailer that previously would have been unimaginable with a combustion engine and then using that same tech to give you way more power off grid or boondocking than we have now. Whether this actually comes to life or does so at a reasonable price point, we will see, but I love where this is going directionally. It's not without its flaws I'm sure, but this is the kind of innovation we need to see in the RV market IMO.
As a future owner of the R1T, I am really interested in this
And this is why I love Airstream. Great concept guys! Can't wait to see it in person!
My wife and I both have a Tesla and could see this being a very real option in our lives. You should get the factories ready because I’m not sure you realize the market demand you would have moving forward with this. I would be happy to be a beta tester on your platform as a newbie who wants to start getting away.
I'm looking forward to future iterations of this concept. Also looking forward to future videos of people driving these down the freeway with the remote only. You know someone is going to figure out how to drive one of these at full speed with the remote only.
Love this and about time! I hope this comes in longer lengths.
I love that matt aluminum finish.
Fantastic idea. From an EV owner’s perspective, some obvious questions:
- What batteries will you use? What capacity?
- What is your voltage architecture? 800v?
- What is your planned Level 3 charging rate, and your estimated time from 20% to 80%?
- Will you be using CCS, or NACS (Tesla) plugs?
I really love this concept. I truly think the ability to move it without a tow vehicle is an amazing idea. This could make previously unusable spots accessible. This is also something motorhome manufacturers should take into consideration, if you ask me.
Love the concept … I would love to see some of this tech translated throughout your line up …
It would be really cool to see this tech even within your van line up as well
Sweet, I'll just sit inside the trailer with my iPad and drive the trailer to the campground :)
More solar, more battery capacity and a larger inverter are the concepts I want to see integrated first. I would also like to see a vented washer/dryer before remote driving.
Go to a laundromat
@@daveklein2826 That is a deal breaker for me.
Towed out 27 airstream around 30k miles and hardly ever go to campground. AM solar installed 600 solar and 600 lithium and we lifted it 3”. Lift this 3” add another axle and this would be the ultimate vehicle to explore remote places. I hope they build them, we would have a reason to upgrade
The is the epitome of innovation. Towing is a huge concern with my Audi E-tron, and I would never even consider towing with it....until now!! Awesome work, looking forward to seeing a finished product
You thought an airstream was expensive now? Can’t wait to see the price point on a trailer that solves a problem no one is having.
Heard of it quite early I guess, was intrigued by the idea. Having made up my mind since then, more things come up everytime I think about it:
- bidirectional charge port is a must
- allow the motor concept to be flexible, e.g. think about a single motor version (for cost reasons) and think about hub motors (for space and complexity reasons).
- given campers/RVs spend a lot of time not at a campsite or on the road, make the new, added tech as flexible as possible to use. You show/have the battery and solar among them. Let the features provide their service while spending time on the campsite or at home: vehicle-to-grid/vehicle-to-home power (see first note), and that as well with the solar essentially growing the solar at home (or even replacing it, if one choses to do so). It may not be much, but for people having none, why not using it while it is there.
- make it international in its core (especially the core electrics/electroonics).
Personally, if I were to invest in this, my first idea is how much benefit do I have while this thing is at my place, since it will be expensive and have components that are not meant to idle, like the battery and solar. Motors will sit whenever they sit, so there is no difference, except depreciation.
That being said, I would like to connect this permanently with my home (like stable, not permanent as in fix), and do what modern BEVs can do, like the lightning and many other new BEVs: delivering power back. Now that this thing has a substantial solar roof, it will deliver quite some Watts during sun penetration and could make a house much more sustainable.
And that can be taken whereever one goes - brilliant!
My next guess is that this would be absolutely perfect as a mobile office. Even better as any Airstream or other RVs or campers ever were!
What draws me back is the idea of having a whole, complex (=expensive) E-powertrain, especially with 2 motors. Hence my mention of hub-motors (much better with a camper than with cars, especially off-road IMHO, think of unsprung mass).
Somebody else mentioned a freight-version or so, I think that is a good idea, but I guess totally not in Airstreams business area - but maybe you think about it.
But what I would love it to become (is it that way now ? I have no idea!) is a modular approach, like seeling it naked without interior and have special outfitters doing custom build or let customers do it themselves. It would make the office idea I mentioned earlier or other business ideas much more realistic and again: flexible.
This concept is indeed idea-fueling!
If you’re serious send them a message or go work for them lol
I would love to see the Cinderella incinerator toilet and inductive cooktop there. This would make it a perfect RV trailer.
The coupler, inertia brakes, jockey wheel (jack) all seem to be the European BPW manufacturer. I also note that the axle is more central as on your European Airstreams. This makes a lot of sense for today's smaller vehicles that can only take a lighter nose weight. This Airstream looks as if it will be big internationally. The integrated lights will be easier to adapt to most countries that require amber turn signals and in many countries also a reversing light and rear fog lamp. The red triangular reflector would look good if integrated also, but these can easily be attached. I like this concept very much and I do know that a small manufacturer in Turkey (or Türkiye as they would now preferred to be known as) has also presented something similar although that is more of an off-road trailer. Clearly, this is the way forward.
As long as there’s no planned obsolescence i’m all for it.
This looks awesome, although one of things I’ve found that can limit your stay outdoors is how much fresh water and gray water you can store. Im assuming this could use a biodegradable toilet but those battery’s are where my water tanks sit.(we have 22ft Caravel) I wonder how much fresh water and gray water can this trailer actually store? This video talks about towing a bunch but nothing about heat, AC, cooking, hot water, showering and the rest what comes with living / staying in a camper. I know its a concept but those are important factors.
Water and waste are always going to be the limiting factor. We have a Jayco 16 FBS with large tanks (55/30/30). Without showers, it will last the two of us about a week.
It’s an airstream, the name is all you need to worry about.
Yes freshwater tank space is a big deal. I go through about 35 gallons in 3 nights.
Love the concept, but if the batteries are filling up the floor space of the RV, where are the tanks?
I look forward to seeing this progress into the future. Definitely will wait a few years before buying to let AS work out the kinks. It takes AS dealers months for the most minor of repairs for many years now.
I really hope a release of a 28 version as well. A 28 would look amazing with the Cybertruck.
From what they told me at the Tampa RV Super Show, they are currently working on a tandem axle version right now. So big things to come
We just bought an Airstream, and the 28RB was the perfect floor plan for us. I could live with a 22 foot, but it would be tight and too small for out use. I would upgrade to an electric 28 much more quickly than I would downgrade to a 22.
I agree make this in year 2023 will be great with cybertruck
@@Workhard_investharder im curios what the price will be since theres already competition from other truck makers. No doubt it might have better range still
You are a salesman’s dream !!!
Was really hoping to see Airstream go this direction. This can enable a truly nomadic lifestyle in the model world. Can’t wait!
Looks amazing. Hope to see products with this kind of tech soon
Very excited to see champions of camping and RV to step out in front and take the lead. Excellent concept. I will certainly consider purchasing one along with my F150 Lighting.
Wow... I never imagined that I'd see these features in any trailer... Go Airstream!!!
Wow i would buy one. From Montréal
Amazing concept! This our future to be united with nature and technology! I need one with a small bunkhouse though
WOW, Just WOW. This is exactly what the futur should be. Hopping that production can come as early as possible.
With all the electric I think there's a great opportunity for the luxury items like instant hot water, surround sound etc that comes with electrification
Really great concept and I hope to see these on the road one day. If you could also have the ability to charge your evehicle from the trailer battery and use the trailer even if it has a dead battery that would be interesting for people who find themselves need just that little bit more range to get out of a cool boondocking location.
It’s about time , great concept but enough talk & hype from these sales people & engineers. Get it done & on the road , instead of waiting another 5-10 years . 👍⚾️
Cool idea. Cost is the issue. Can’t imagine this being even somewhat reasonable to purchase.
You nailed it sir. The $100,000 question my high tech Subaru Outback XT cost me $49k so I would be shocked if the Estream would be less then $125,000.
Would never have considered an Airstream, now I'm researching if you guys have a presence in Australia... here's hoping this leaves the concept phase, well done
Airstream has always had a futuristic look, but woah! Props!
I'll be completely sold when they include a dry bath lol
I have a Tesla Model 3 and I am very excited to see how the EStream Trailer can help me get into having a towable camping trailer. I’ll continue to keep you on my radar for future updates on your progress thanks
Well the Model 3 has a tow rating of 2000 lbs so I wouldn't get your hopes up.
Love to experience off grid living with this.
I’m in. Let me know when you’d like me to test this out for you. 😄
To hell with the concept! Give me one today!!
Great! Now move from concept to production.
Yesssss was waiting for this? Congrats great move!!! Let’s go!
So if this trailer is capable of driving its own wheels does that mean you cannot put "special trailer" tires on this unit will you have to use normal Lt tires like all the vehicles have? Most people that I talked to already use Lt tires as the "special trailer" tires tend to blow out the second you drive down the road due to the standards that LT tires have to comply with versus the near non-existent standards ST tires have. Thoughts?
I hope these are available to purchase by 2026. That’s when I plan to retire and buy one!
They might have a first production run model out by the end of this year.
Wow ! ……I’ll say it backwards WOW ! This is really impressive and WAY ahead of the curve ! Way to think outside of the box Airstream !
Si love so much! Especially that they use a Black couple and child also, several “walk ons.” The features are draw dropping. I would love to easily afford, use, and enjoy this with a great partner/friend or even solo!
I am a big fun of your products! But now you make me want a Tesla 😀
Officially I have a new dream now
This is exactly what I was hoping to see from you guys.
Have you considered collaborating with Tesla in anyway? Whether that be car integration or even a Cybertruck edition trailer.
Looks like pebble is beating you to it. Lightship is in a different ball game but delivers an amazing ambiance of RVing.
Are you kidding me?? !! Holy cow! This is amazing. Even if only 1/2 of this is true…this knocked me out….
Great innovation. Good job 👍🏻
Can’t wait to see this IRL
I hope airstream follows through with this concept! Looks good
Awesome!
Great concept. If you could incorporate a way to regenerate the batteries of the trailer while it’s being towed on the road by the spinning wheels would be the ultimate trailer for ev cars/trucks. Recharge the car/truck literally anywhere once your stopped would be a complete off the grid solution.
That would defeat the whole point as adding rolling regeneration would add resistance to towing it costing more energy than you could generate. It would use more fuel or battery power of the tow vehicle than towing a regular trailer of the same size and weight would. But, perhaps when coasting down steep grades it would make sense to capture some of that energy of gravity to regen a bit, the same as what Tesla’s already do.
@@Zanzamar555 Not an engineer by any means but my rsq8 regenerates @50% when I’m coasting and full 100% when I lightly brake while coasting. I’m sure someone could come up with a solution like that. Would be cool anyway
@@PCBetter yeah regen while coasting or braking works well. Just can’t do so while accelerating as that is self defeating.
Yeah, that old law of conservation of energy really gets in the way of things.
A big reason to develop concept products like shown is to file patents. Patents to both potentially use later when it becomes more feasible and also to prevent your competition from using later. Been there; done that for many years.
Hi i am wating to see it coming to the market very soon this is the way of future for costumer and for the industry to go keep it up
I have wanted a RV/travel trailer for over a decade, but I was active duty military and the moving every few years made getting one unrealistic. However, here is my wish list (as a current EV owner) of what I’d like in an electrified camper like your eStream or comparable product like those from Pebble and Lightship:
1. A trailer lightweight enough to be towed by existing EVs. I know getting down to say Model Y limits is not realistic, but maybe Model X?
2. NACS-compatible DC fast charging
3. Bi-directional charging for home battery backup or off-grid EV charging.
4. Range comparable to existing EVs so you’re not stopping to charge your RV more than you would an EV on roadtrips.
5. Built-in solar charging that can cover a day of use on a sunny day (i.e., refrigerator, cooktop, lights, and HVAC).
6. Energy efficient appliances, to include a reasonably sized HVAC unit, fridge/freezer, induction burner, and microwave.
7. Aerodynamic body shape.
8. Space and power conducive to digital nomad lifestyle (lots of outlets and workspace).
9. Integrated satellite internet?
10. Electronic locks that can be remotely operated via app.
11. The self parking thing is sweet! Will there be sensors for when backing in to tight corners or when you don’t have 360° visibility around the camper?
12. MODERN STYLING INSIDE!
I would buy this immediately!
What are you doing for A/C, EV style pumps? And where will fresh water, Grey water, and black water tanks go?
Great job! Forward thinking :)
Since these will weight significantly more than the non-E versions, how will this impact the towing vehicle tow capacity ratings? Could I tow a 7,000 lb eStream with a vehicle rated for 5,000 lbs? Does this virtually eliminate the requirement for a tow vehicle to have any significant tow rating? In other words, could ANY vehicle with a class 3+ hitch tow this? The concept of not needing a huge tow vehicle is very appealing!
An exciting and uniformly superb presentation showcasing the new AIRSTREAM E-Stream.
Kindly consider eliminating all rot proof wood products particularly in structural flooring, roofing, inside walls etc. AZDEL,LITEPLY, etc(I have zero financial interest in same)and or epoxy coat marine plywood. No Luan or any wood that rots from internal humidity and leaking moisture as that is heartbreaking on such a costly & beautiful product. Such a superlatively crafted work of art and vehicle has a life span of decades, just like an airplane wrought from aircraft aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium if cared for. If there be wood, let it be fine woods(Walnut,Oak,Cherry,Maple, etc) utilized in drawer and closet fronts. Best wishes in all future personal and AIRSTREAM endeavors. phil
Airstream should design the airstream ceiling to not get damaged by hails
Now that's an innovation!
This is pretty incredible
We have never owned a RV, 5th wheel, travel trailer - but this I would purchase. We are currently considering a class C or B, but waiting a couple of years to see if this will come to market will be worth the wait.
Just wait until self driving really takes off, they'll attach a second set of wheels, increase the battery capacity, and let you hop in at home for it to drive you to a nice remote area for a week and back again, truly that is the dream.
Airstream should give more storage space for sport toys such as boats kayaking e scooters and bikes
Can't wait to buy one. 22ft is perfect for small family with normal SUV.
For the price of one of these Airstreams you could pay off your mortgage and send all your kids to college.
Love the forward look! So much of this is fantastic. I think EV’s in the near future will have plenty of towing capacity, but having battery life for days is awesome. A light weight option that doesn’t have the power bank, can draw power from the WV but still provide recharging solar from the large roof would be a nice route as well.
Super exciting! Cost will likely be a concern, but really forward thinking.
Very nice!
I like the concept. Only thing is if you cant back up a trailer you should not be towing one in the first place.
It'd be a game changer if the estream could generate electricity while being towed that could keep an electric (tow) vehicle charged...even if just to increase range.
It can
And how do you propose it could generate electricity? I'm going to assume you're joking?
Wish you gave us a detailed interior tour too. Please do one for that and send to those who have commented at least!
Wow, what a beauty, the remote control part was a huge hit! The price is probably to the moon but looks like you'll be paying for quality!
Hopefully there is a feature added to have rear-view cams sync up with one of the vehicles dash monitors. Either way, it's nice to see these designs come to life.
Drive assist will be a game changer for all trailers including hgv trailers. Having batteries and a drive unit on board will significantly increase range. And the trailers can be charged while docked. Even integrated into existing ice trucks it would assist in propulsion and increase mpg
That’ll be half a million please 😌
I'm very excited for this concept to become a reality. Take my money, please!
