But Canada had a generation superior to the players of 1972. But Gretzky, Messier, Lemieux, Coffey, Bourque still hardly won against the Soviets in their own clearing with their own judges. The imaginary sense of superiority came into line with reality - the forces are equal.
Gretzky skating was really slick and he was very fast. You should review his acceleration if you don’t agree. Even in 2020 hockey context, he is still a force to reckon with. I don’t see him anywhere outside of top 3 players. His game vision is unique, nobody can replicate it. And his contribution to the team isn’t only the goals that he scored.

The Russians played as a team 11 months a year for multiple years in a row. If Canada was able to do that they would've dominated far more than the Russians. Canada got a few weeks to prepare - not years!! Also in '72 Russia won more on Canadian ice, and Canada won more on Russian ice. Fun fact :)

The Soviet KLM line which was part of the Green Unit might have been the best foward line all of hockey during the 1980s. Gretzky & Kurri w/Semenko/Krushelnyski/Tikkanen or whoever else they put on the left side is probably the only other line that could claim the top spot in the 1980s.
The Stastny line in Quebec was up there as well for a short run before age caught up with Marian. I'd also put that one magical season from the Triple Crown Line in LA right in there too. All three with 100 points.
There were competent players on both teams but unfortunately the whole Canada cup tournaments favoured Team Canada every single time. Team Canada got away with very dirty hockey, I Wonder how THE Soviet Team could Keep calm with all abuse! This is something that even hockey loving Canadians must have found to be unsportmanlike and embarrasing. All European teams was subject to this kind of treatment.
Unfortunately, the host country always puts obstacles in the place of the visiting teams. How did the Soviets keep calm? One answer is the large amount of hard currency the Soviets were paid when they came to North America. Another is that they used less blatant dirty tactics which they were well versed in. One could just as well ask how Canadian teams put up with the abuse they faced in Europe.

The 84 Team Canada had lots of Islanders and Oilers and they hated each other. There was problems in the dressing room. Took Team Canada awhile to get some chemistry going. They were terrible in the Group Stage.

My reactions as I watch this game: 1. Two line passes were bullshit. So unnecessary. 2. Gretzky was way faster than people give him credit for. 3. That Messier elbow was among the worst I've ever seen. In today's game that's a very lengthy suspension. (I liked how the Soviet player smeared his blood on the ice. 😂) 4. I had no idea that Stastny played for Canada. Big free agent pickup! 5. 80's goaltending is just how I remembered it. 6. Very cool to see the wave in the building as a new novelty at the time. 7. The canadian play in this game was just awful. They spent more time throwing cheap shots, late hits, slashes, etc, then actually piecing together creative hockey. I have no problem with legally leveling the puck carrier, but there were so many cheap/late hits and uncalled blatant penalties in this game from Team Canada its just shameful.
Watch the USSR vs. Sweden game from the '87 Canada Cup. The Soviets were leaving their feet throwing dirty hits at the Swedes. Alot of this style play was normal in the 80s. Claude Lemiuex smacking Hasek on the side of the head as he skated by in the '87 semi final is another perfect example of the intensity the game was played at back then - it wasn't tame like it is now - there was a Cold War on and the players had much different interpersonal relationships then - especially during international play against Eastern Bloc countries.
We would't even come close, if not for the one sided referees (Cheating) and allowing our thugs to break every rule in the book, and, putting them in the box for defending themselves against our Goons!! И было смешно глядя на них,когда в начале игры выходят на лёд ,блин,с такими понтамы,и у после игры уходят как общипаные цыпленки.
Честно скажу,я на них смотрел тогда с презрением,с их грязной игрой, особенно когда они проигрывали. Они это потом поняли,когда чуть постарше стали,и когда наши ветераны пригласили их в гости,признаваясь в свои ошибки просили прощение.

My reactions as I watch this game:
1. Two line passes were bullshit. So unnecessary.
2. Gretzky was way faster than people give him credit for.
3. That Messier elbow was among the worst I've ever seen. In today's game that's a very lengthy suspension. (I liked how the Soviet player smeared his blood on the ice. 😂)
4. I had no idea that Stastny played for Canada. Big free agent pickup!
5. 80's goaltending is just how I remembered it.

Сборная СССР обыграла тогда всех в группе, но не смогла выиграть Кубок Канады. Во второй раз канадцев (в полуфинале) уже не смогли переиграть. Кстати, Фетисова не было в том составе и Третьяк после Олимпиады в Сараево уже не выступал за сборную, и вообще рано завершил карьеру.

The canadian play in this game was just awful. They spent more time throwing cheap shots, late hits, slashes, etc, then actually piecing together creative hockey. I have no problem with legally leveling the puck carrier, but there were so many cheap/late hits and uncalled blatant penalties in this game from Team Canada its just shameful.
Watch the USSR vs. Sweden game from the '87 Canada Cup. The Soviets were leaving their feet throwing dirty hits at the Swedes. Alot of this style play was normal in the 80s. Claude Lemiuex smacking Hasek on the side of the head as he skated by in the '87 semi final is another perfect example of the intensity the game was played at back then - it wasn't tame like it is now - there was a Cold War on and the players had much different interpersonal relationships then - especially during international play against Eastern Bloc countries.
