Sony WM-F63 Sports Walkman Repair.

- Today we will be looking at one of Sony's Sports Walkman's WM-F63.
This model sports (pun intended) an autoreverse cassette deck, a radio, with AM and FM, Dolby noise reduction, chrome tape compatibility, removable belt clip and last but not least a splash-proof case.

Excellent presentation Aston, and a very nice gift. Sorry to see your camera sensor deciding to stop sensing part way through, but your i-phone picked up the slack really well.
I picked up a few handy tips from this video, I have some EMA plastic weld on order, and your tip for not losing retainer clips and such with sellotape - although so obvious a solution, is actually genius.
I've also told the wife we need beans...

Thanks for your video! Amazing how CZcams can be the ressource of so many stuff! I have the same model, not working, and decided to restore it as I could hear the motor but nothing else spins!
I was thinking of a potential belt broken, and confort me when I saw your video! Without your video I couldn’t have done the repaire (still in progress as the belt has melt! All sticky so I need more step to clean up all!)

@@AstonsVintageTechnologyWorkshp thanks 😊 I'm going to need some luck to figure out why my F73 volume is too loud, which is the opposite old walkmans being too quiet usually haha! Acceptable volume is when the volume pot is all the way down to the lowest end 🙉
@@tacticaltome Sounds like the carbon tracks maybe broken at some point, possibly due to being dropped/impact. You might be looking at a new volume pot. But before that, it's worth taking it apart and checking that the wipers are not bent back. You can also test across either end of the pot to make sure that it's still measuring the correct resistance. All the best from Aston.

Thanks for a fantastic video.. I just found my old WM-F63 & your video helped me before I butchered it... Only, I've lost the battery cover door, so I may 3D print it... (never knew on the plastic weld) I'm In NW UK, so I'll check online..Best regards

Great video! This was the last Walkman I bought before the CD era so it’s been in a box for thirty odd years. The belt must be toast, but FM is fine. Now I know how to change the $5 part 😊. I also have a ‘78(ish) F1 Walkman that I also bought new- that will be next to work on.

That was a great present Aston. I’ve not seen one of those before. Your repairs and manufactured parts were great. I’d wouldn’t have been able to resist temptation to to those smd electrolytics while I was in there though. Cheers Graham
Yep, I was tempted to change them, but they are the early in house made unmarked caps by Sony, which makes sense why they are still good. They will get done at a later date, probably with tantalums or something similar but they're fine for now. As for the manufactured parts, wait till you see what I've been up to today 😁 It's going to make a lot of people very happy. But that's for another video...

Hi I have the same walkman - the tape functions play forward stop are fine. But i dont get any audio? Could you please tell me what it might be? Faulty aux socket
Could be capacitors or a damaged flexy cable. Might even be a damaged volume control/headphone socket. Lastly, check for battery leakage. Hope that helps. Ast..
My Walkman won’t turn on even when I cleaned the battery area and put fresh ones in any recommendations to what I can do?
Apologies for not replying sooner, CZcams has been a little strange recently. If the Walkman is completely dead, it could be quite a few things, dry joints, faulty DC jack, battery corrosion, the leaf switch which turns the mechanism on or even the regulator IC for the motor. If the LED comes on however it might just be the belt has perished or has wrapped itself around motor. In any case, it definitely sounds like it might need to be looked at. Best regards, Ast...
I’m curious, what kind of nylon washer does it use?
Sadly, Sony describe it as "washer" which isn't very helpful. It's just a little green split washer about 2 mm across. But, my goodness, can they disappear... I've spent hours looking for these little things when they decide to disappear. You can use a hole punch to create new ones, if you want, out of old plastic bottles, or similar material, and they work quite well, but there's nothing quite like the original for durability. Ast...
I have one of those, i dont know How to turn it on, i have tried everything. So I think it’s dead😢 Do you know how I can check that the problem is with it?
Well, first place to start would be the battery contacts, if they're corroded, you won't get any power. Same goes for if there is any battery corrosion on the circuitboard. Beyond that it would be either the radio or the cassette deck that don't work, and not both of them. So for instance, the cassette deck would be the microswitch not engaging, and the radio would be a broken flexible cable. Failing that, you'll need a basic multimeter and just measure where the voltages stop getting through. Good luck. Ast...

Hi, I'm Aston not Graham by the way. But anyway, the green cable between the two inner circuit boards has connectors with a brown pull-out part. It only pulls out a few millimetres, and slide the connector in then push the brown retainer part to hold it tight. This goes for both ends. Same thing for the yellow connector, this plugs into a similar type of connector but with grey retainers that need to be pushed in once the cable is in place. Hope this helps, yours, Aston.

And also Aston I would like ask you about sound problems, you see when I playback the cassette tape It has no sound, but when I switch to radio I can hear just fine, what’s is your professional thinking for this situation ?
@@renzonarimastu136 Hi there, Okey, when you to press play and turn the volume up a bit, do you hear a slight motor noise in the background? If so that proves the the amplifiers for the tape are working, check the head flexy cable. If not, double check the green cable going in to the board on the cassette mech, (the bit with the fuzzy tape on it) if it's not seated properly you'll get what you're experiencing. Also check both of the leaf switches. Make sure they are both being engaged by the mechanism properly. If not, you'll get the wrong side of the cassette being played backwards, or the tape won't play at all. All the best and best of luck, Ast...
