Grate Day on the Doria

- After discovering the treasures of the Andrea Doria third class and knowing other divers would stand in line for a spot on the SEEKER, John Chatterton planned and executed a way to give easy access to other divers by cutting a larger hole. Rival dive boat, WAHOO, and some of its divers, including Richie Kohler, caught wind of this and planned to clear out the room before the SEEKER had a chance to return.
This coup was revealed to Chatterton...
Love Shadow Divers and really thrilled to see these videos! I am one of the current owners and operators of the WAHOO (Now R/V GARVIN) and Shadow Divers holds an ironic and cherished place in our library.
So well executed, and great to watch. Thanks.
You are DEFINITELY one of a kind, John!
Thank God...
Really weird that he felt he had authority over a gravesite and shipwreck to arbitrarily seal it up or open it to begin with.
Nice video. Read about it in Shadow divers 😂
My father and family came here on the Doria 1954,
Been waiting a long time to see this. Epic stuff my friend.
Awesome prank. Top notch stuff.
Any comments here from any of the divers from the "Wahoo"?
I really enjoy all of your videos! Great work. I read about the "grate" and hole burned into 3rd class in that book called "Deep Descent." Thank you so much for sharing these adventures with those of us (like myself) who don't have the balls of steel you have to do all this dangerous diving! ha ha ha.... Once again, thank you very much for posting these videos. PS: What damage to the Doria from the accident can be SEEN when diving?
Non as she lies on her starboard side which hiders the damage.
What an excellent prank!
The notice is simply brilliant!
The faces on the divers that encountered the grate must've been priceless...
If I ever hit a huge lotto I'm going to try to get the grate as a lawn ornament!~
Good one!!😅
jestem pełen podziwu, pozdrawiam serdecznie z Polski
I'd love to have seen their faces when they dived down and found it! 😁
Is the gird still chained to the opening today?
Why was the grate put there? It's in international waters so anyone can dive it if they are able to just like the titanic which is being eaten away more and more with every minute that goes by. Its nice to have the footage of both ships which have been documented over the years. Plus if anyone wanted to get in there with the means to do so would only have to cut another hole.
Did you need some kind if permit to salvage anything off of wrecks. Sorry I don't know how salvage/ treasure hunter laws work.
You're a friggen legend, how do you have only 1.2k subs?? Respect to you from an Italian fellow diver from the Bronx!
For those bitching about how he doesn’t have rights to do this, did you all miss the several times he said it was done as a prank?
Didnt see anyone bitching about it
I have that book, I loved the part about you installing that grate, FRIGGEN GENIUS!! Troll Level: MASTER!!
Except when Wahoo opened it with welder or something and left their own note: "Inventory done" lol
@@VillaG89 that never happened, man. Lol
Extremely long decompression is needed topside to swim 300 ft. Down there.
Ever heard of a thing called a "Master Lock"
+WestyBadger1 The comment is two years old but I'll reply anyway. A steel lock attached to mixed metals in saltwater - I would give that lock about two or three weeks before corrosion from electrolysis made the lock unusable.
@@frankkolton1780 Nothing the Lockpicking Lawyer couldn't handle
Well, executed plan, John. I bet Steve wasn't happy after seeing it.
Admire your expertise, but I cannot understand why people want to do this. Looks like a junkyard..but on the ocean floor.
Underwater trolling!!!
What keeps them from using bolt cutters?
They didn’t know it was going to be blocked off. So they didn’t bring chain cutters. By then, the Seeker has already grabbed a bunch of plates out of there leaving nothing for the other divers who were trying to get at it.
With all due respect to Chatterton (one of the greatest divers in history), what right does he have to deny access to a rival team on a wreck they do not own? I find this highly offensive.
Closed for inventory? You guys are a bunch of clowns. Bet King of the Deep was not too happy. Lol!
Odd video ?
Aren't you destroying and even more damaging the ship-wreck by diving like this? I mean, idk the rules, but this is pure damaging to me?
This seems like a real asshole thing to do to an underwater grave site. 16 divers have died exploring the Andrea Doria, and you created yet another hazard for them to encounter. Why risk people's lives over a stack of dinner plates?
The hazard they had created was the hole, not the grate. By covering it there's less of a chance for people to die in there.
Just a thought but is there anyway that could have caused someone to be trapped inside...... That's a sh $@ load of work for a joke. Hate to see what you do when your pissed at someone.
And your Dory I should be treated just like the Titanic it was something that happened on accident and people lost their lives
Do you own the ship then? Surely such a thing is fair game for anyone...
He isn't stopping anyone from diving the wreck. Only from using the hole that HE cut at great expense and risk.
@@KB4QAA Ohhhh so he has free reign to desecrate a shipwreck that doesn't belong to him? See, you're stupid, because you excuse his actions because he's done a bunch of dives. That doesn't mean shit you idiot. He had no right to cut a hole in the ship and loot it to begin with.
Cool video ! But why are you plundering a graveyard nothing should taken from her that is the resting place of 51 souls. I mean why don't you just go to a cemetery and dig souls up same thing.
Prank my @#$!!! What about the respect for the people who died there? Or is it just your personal playground???
So senseless what these divers are doing there !! Every treasure hunter have the right to dive this wreck to search for treasure. You think that this frame can hold up future diving expeditions ??
Absolutely senseless !!
Thomas Kautzner did you miss the part about it being a prank?
There’s a lot more context that’s missing here. Read “Shadow Divers” and you’ll understand something closer to the full story.
@@roadweary5252 if he likes pranks like this he doesn't have anything to do in life... besides, you don't do pranks in places where people have died!!!
chiccachannel I never said I agreed with it..
Cut your own hole in the side of the ship and put your own door on it. LMAO ! ! !
