  • Welcome to a video review of 7554 - a historical Vietnamese FPS about the Indo-China war. It has been one of the few Vietnamese forays into the gaming industry, and it came out in a time where it was popular for FPSes to emulate Call of Duty. Has this dated 7554 (hah)? Is it worth playing today? That's what I'm here to find out.

    I got this video out much sooner than expected! This is probably my most stream-of-consciousness and disjointed video in a while. Guess that's what a game like this (and 6 months in editing purgatory) does to someone.
    Also, this is the first game to become abandonware while I was making a video on it. It seemingly happened at some point in the last few weeks. That's fun. I had to rewrite that section thanks to that last-minute realization.
    And yes, when talking about the cheating AI, I accidentally said 110ms instead of 130ms. It barely makes a difference because it's faster than human reaction speed either way. I also called the Mosin a Springfield, because I initially mixed them up but then couldn't find any footage of me using the Springfield. Oops.

      Ah, we all make mistakes. Call me a masochist, but I actually want to play this game. Don't ask me why, because I don't know. I just want to play it. I'm 99.9% sure I'll hate it more than anything. But this game did get me thinking about making an FPS. Maybe I'll try to make a low budget shooter. With this game as inspiration in terms of its unique setting. (Even though I will say this will be an experiment since I plan on making mainly RPGs).

    I find negative reviews infinitely more entertaining than positive ones. 'Just bad games' is one of my favorite yotube series.

    Good to see you finally got around to covering this. I skipped to your final thoughts for this first viewing due to time constraints. However, I do plan on watching it in full later. Keep up the good work 👍

    So I just read the PCGamingWiki article for this. The main accolade for the game is "It's a Vietnamese Call of Duty Clone".

      Well, it's certainly not wrong. That's probably the most positive thing anybody had to say.

    It's always fun to 'hunch' your way through the menus trying to find the language switch. I prefer physical games and a lot of them aren't released in the west - but are in Japan and rest of Asia. When facing a screen-full of Chinese upon entering a menu, I use the sight sliders as the sign of being in the right place.

    Finally watched the video. I enjoyed it. RIP the viable flamethrowers streak. But as they say all good things must come to an end.😢

    To explain the appeal in COD's Zombies mode... It's a game-within-a-game. World at War, after the credits, throws you into the original Zombies map, and it's basically a minigame to play after you beat the campaign. It's also a great time waster on top of a fun survival minigame. The precise mechanics are used, sure, but the Zombies in COD are deliberately scaled for these mechanics, so you don't need to aim down the sights as much as you would in campaign or multiplayer.
    I guess that's why COD Zombies is so good to some: It was designed with COD gameplay limitations in mind.

    • @marriedtomychair
      @marriedtomychair  Před rokem +2

      I remember being surprised by it back in the day. I thought it was a funny little gimmick and didn't think about it again afterwards, as I immediately went back to replaying campaign missions instead. It completely blew my mind that there was a zombies community. Even today, I'm incapable of seeing it as anything more than a novelty that grew out of hand.
      I could be misinterpreting you, but just to be clear, my problem isn't necessarily that CoD zombies is fundamentally badly designed. The issue I take with it is subjective - I despise fighting zombies in games. Slow-moving damage sinks with no ranged attacks are the most boring thing an FPS could have. The only zombie game I enjoy is Left 4 Dead, because you're at least up against fast-moving hordes that quickly succumb to most weapons. I would probably enjoy CoD zombies if it leaned into that style of gameplay. The way it actually is, I was unable to stomach playing for more than two rounds to gather footage. I'd already suffered enough for this video.

      Funnily enough CoD4 started the "after credits minigame" with Mile High Club, which became Spec Ops missions.

    I admit I did enjoy this game, granted, I played on Normal and got it for free.
    Ultimately, I am at least glad it exists since I'm always interested in games that tackle lesser known conflicts.
    It is definitely heavily flawed though.

    • @marriedtomychair
      @marriedtomychair  Před rokem +3

      That's a pretty reasonable set of standards. I'm personally not much more forgiving with free games shy of obvious constraints (eg: length, graphics). I just want my games to be fun to play, regardless of what I paid for them.
      Normal mode is almost certainly the ideal way to play. Something tells me hard mode and beyond were afterthoughts.

      @samz8691 Před rokem +1

      @@marriedtomychair Yeah there's nothing wrong with you not liking it, I actually gave up on Hard mode myself, the AI is still to accurate on normal, it's just you don't get set back to checkpoints as much. (at least in my experience.)
      The devs did actually do do crowdfunding for a spiritual sequel of sorts, 300475, a similar idea but for the Vietnam war but it ended up not being fully funded so it has seemingly been scrapped.

    • @marriedtomychair
      @marriedtomychair  Před rokem +2

      @@samz8691 I'm surprised I didn't hear about 300475. A Vietnam war game from the perspective of the Vietnamese would be quite refreshing. I feel these developers have potential, so it's a shame it may not see the light of day.

      I haven't thought of Shellshock 2 in ages. I think I played it on a demo disk back in the day, and even as a kid, I was baffled by how bad it was. Honestly, it could've been my introduction to bad games.

    The COD formula seems like it'd just be an inherently bad fit for a game where you play as the underdogs.

    As a Vietnamese and have played CoD from the OG MW to Black Ops 2, I can say this game have the ambitions, but the studio behind it don't have enough talent and strength to match that ambitions. It sucks at every aspect, but seeing the people in my country still defend it make me die of cringe.
