    One thing I forgot to say: beyond being the right thing to do, admitting I was wrong was so worth it on a personal level. Though it was hard, especially given I was wrong so publicly and that admitting it meant making a lot less money, it was an immediate weight off my shoulders and meat I could move on with my life. I never would have met my partner if I had doubled down and stayed a crazy raw foodist! I'm a million times more successful and a million times happier now than I was 7 years ago.
    Anyone feeling like they can't admit they messed up, even if it seems like the world will end if you do, you are doing YOURSELF more harm by not coming forward. Rip that band aid off beesh.

      @meganepelletier853 Před 5 lety +12

      She said in a previous video it had to do (for her and assumedly a lot of other people) with being desperate. Usually that is related to some sort of health issue which diets such as the raw food diet claim to heal, such as acne, struggling to lose weight, digestive issues, fatigue, etc. Quite often people don't necessarily buy into the lie straight away, it's more of a curiosity and a " what if it really does work?" mindset. Then, given the strict nature of these diets, eating becomes a sort of ritualistic process, often leading to some form of dogmatism amongst adepts. Sometimes, they really do help with certain issues, but the downsides are very much disregarded, not discussed at all, or worse, downright brushed off and laughed at (think protein on a vegan diet). Obviously, if one struggles with an issue and a specific diet helps them solve this issue, they'll want to help other people struggling with that same problem. They'll share information, often still unaware of the dangers of what they are promoting.
      Eventually, as time goes by and they come across more information, they'll become aware that things aren't just black and white. It can take time to understand the reasoning behind certain protocols/diets, and to the compare that reasoning to actual science and decide for yourself whether or not it's worth pursuing. That's one of the reasons people often become more lax about certain practices or change their diet altogether.
      In a sense, I think going through these types of experiences is very humbling. Doing something for so long and coming to the realisation that you're wrong makes you question your future thoughts, choices and decisions more. Sometimes if you're raised in an environment where you're considered "smart" can make you feel like you know better than other people. Being proven wrong and learning from your mistakes can do some good in teaching you that you're not less likely to be foooled by bad science and wrong claims. Coming across information that debunks what you believe in is a lesson of humility and reminder that our individual pools of knowledge are excessively limited, hence the need for methodologically accurate, peer-reviewed studies and meta-analysis.

    Hi Swayze. As a registered dietitian, I really appreciate that you stopped going down the track of creating books or products aimed at guiding people with their nutrition.
    Nutrition science is so much more complex than many vegan CZcamsrs make it out to be and I just hate seeing the negative effects caused by following diet advice dished by self-proclaimed diet gurus.
    Also, on a related note, I see you getting a lot of flak for calling out other vegan CZcamsrs diets but I think the points you bring up are actually worth discussing. So keep doing what you're doing 🙂

      @veggiesandmore Před 2 lety +3

      @Dragon Fist While I agree there is a lot of influence from the meat, dairy and egg industry in the information that makes its way into the dietetics curriculum, your comment dismisses the fact that, dietitians are not only taught about nutrition, but also about biochemistry, biology and physiology. We're also taught how to read and interpret scientific studies, and even design them ourselves. We're not simply taught to recite information given to us in school back to clients like parrots for years and years to come. The large majority of dietitians use critical thinking and base themselves on the nutrition research currently available to us to help people eat better thanks to science-based recommendations and advice. The meat, dairy and egg industry's influence, as large as it may be, doesn't make qualifications as worthless as your comment seems to imply! ;)

    I have always believed that in order to disagree with someone's point, you must first take the time to understand it. I am an omnivore, however, I have been taking the time over the past few months to gain a deeper understanding of veganism, what it means it be vegan, and what kind of life style veganism entails. Many vegans on CZcams that I have found and watched have turned me off from veganism, because of the way in which they frame a vegan life: one that is expensive, restrictive and must fundamentally based on a reformed view of health, strongly founded in morality, and frankly, socio economic economic privelage. I do not live in the US, and such an abundance of vegan products simply does not exist, which lead me to the conclusion that to be a vegan and not give up absolutely everything I love, I must live in LA and shop at whole foods. When I found your channel, I was surprised with how intelligently, scientifically and responsibly you speak about veganism. I have learned more about the science and morality of veganism watching your videos than I have for a very long time watching others. I appreciate your skepticism and affinity for research as well as your moral basis and the ability to remain critical. You do not make it your job to convert me to veganism, much rather, you educate me and leave me to make my own conclusions. I think that your channel is "controversial" because you don't prescribe a universally positive and cure all status to veganism, and I find that to be your biggest asset when speaking to omnivores like me. So thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos and changing my mind about veganism.

      Great comment! We should try to educate ourselves to understand others better as much as possible. Unfortunately, we often get bombarded with the most extreme views and personalities in the name of "representing the whole group". It often makes people either tune out or push back instead of understanding what everyone else in the group is saying/presenting to us. It happens with every ideology out there. It's so nice to find channels, groups, individuals who have clear and ethical conversations instead of just jumping to the most extreme.

When I struggled with self worth I would get so defensive and couldn’t handle any criticism and now that I have self esteem and self worth I can admit when I was wrong about something, apologize, and move on bc I know now that me being wrong about something doesn’t define me as a person. Could you review Alyse Parker's (former Raw Alignment) new diet? She did a food haul recently and she seems to have gone from one extreme to another. Now her diet consists of steak, salmon, bacon, eggs, and berries. She also seems to equate lack of normal bowel movements (gas, bloating) with health and doesn't seem to be concerned about the potential harmful effects of a low fiber & high animal protein diet. I'm just so confused. Why wouldn't she try a normal balanced diet? I'd love to hear your insight on this.

      I’m not a RawAlignment fan, never have been. But I see her videos in my recommended from time to time and watched her grocery haul video recently. I was so confused when she showed us everything she got and it was basically like 50lbs of salmon and multiple packs of steak. And that’s it. Not only is it pretty gross, but it’s not a meal? Is she literally just eating steaks and salmon for breakfast, lunch and dinner? I don’t know. I think she’s mentally unstable.

    Your ability to look back on the things you used to believe and holding yourself accountable is very refreshing. It just goes to show EVERYONE that you are fully capable of learning from just about all of your life experiences and don't have to hold steadfast to a flawed belief system in fear of losing your following or facing prosecution. Sure, people may be upset, but it's better than leading others down a wrong path.

Like what's wrong with garlic and onion, and why can't you have mint in your fruit salad or basil on your tomatoes? Parsley? Oregano? I kind of understand why people might avoid salt, but pepper?

Honesty has oodles of import to me, and people find it so difficult to admit when they have advocated for something they no longer believe, so whenever someone DOES admit things like this, I'm all about the positive reinforcement. It would be so nice if we could have honest debates without people feeling personally attacked when their ideas are being criticized or, similarly, without people calling others hypocrites when they change their minds. I have so much respect for you being able to not just say you are wrong, but you are able to point it out and show people your thought process then. Not many people are able or even willing to that. You know we have so many preaching things to us, but they never want to admit when they were wrong or had fucked up at some point. So many people will just sweep it under the rug, acting like it never happened. I actually watched some of your videos years ago. I never actually did raw food methods (I have too many health issues, disabilities, allergies, etc to ever consider doing that), but stopped watching CZcams for a little while. When I came back you had switched your outlook and views so much I kind of forgot you had ever made those videos, to be frank. I also respect so much that you've removed/hidden so many videos or if you left them up you've gone back and left a note in the comments/description. However, you don't hide the fact that you thought this way. I really appreciate that in almost video that you've mentioned your journey and changes in thought from years ago. I really hope you are proud of how you have changed your channel to represent your ethics and morals. It can be incredibly hard to stick by those things if you realize you had so many people following along and getting paid by that wrong information. You don't just talk about others mistakes or crazy thing's they say/do, but you have no problem calling yourself out as well. It's refreshing and honorable to continue on this path, and continue urging others to do their research. You're a badass, Swayze💛

This shows how people can be wrong, whether they have a million sources or not. This shows that even if someone is doing something wrong, that doesn't mean they are bad or will always be bad. This shows growth and potential. This proves to anyone out there wanting to change that it is possible and that it is okay to have an unhealthy past. I really, truly commend you for this.
