My 034 super, 044 magnum and red light 066 still run like new but getting afraid to use them much because they can’t be replaced. The new 620 and 7900 run but I sure miss the days when you could buy a new saw and didn’t have to tear it half apart and fix them just to make them run almost as good as the 35 yr old saws. Pretty sad. I can still remember the guy that showed me what part of the tree was up, pile of 56’s and what were they 76’s? Neither cut like a 66 but we’re awesome for milling! Thanks for reminding me, the guy still has my Silva! 🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for sharing Donny, these stories illustrate the path to whom you are today. Your passion and how it came to be in your blood. 31 years now since I pulled the starter rope on an 064. I still run that saw logging today. As well as my first 066 in my picture. Every time I test a new saw of any brand the 064/066 is the saw I compare them too. I hope that someone will one day build as good or better saw so that a new logger may share the same experience. The Stihl 064/066 are in my blood as well.
Man I just love hearing these stories. I met a fellow here in Alberta that was a logger years ago in B.C. Retired now. He was telling me some stories and how he remembered the first time he ran a Walkerized saw and the difference compared to a stock saw. Please keep doing more saw talk stories. Lots of valuable info on old saws that needs to be passed on in my opinion.
I'm now the caretaker of my late father's 066. It's such a joy to operate when I need the power. I've seriously tossed around the thought of having a true master bring some extra pep to it. I wish the Walker shop was closer. I'm not sure what it would cost to get in your hands, but more I contemplate the more it seems like a good decision.
Man it's a small world, back in the 80's & early 90's I would go into Zeballos & fair Harbor on service calls for auto marine electric Port hardy .used to stay overnight in the shop van many times, and yea I would get six for the ditch on the way home . Man your stories takes my mind back to a different time Thank you for them .Be safe ,be kind and most of all be happy!
What a great story Donny, I don't think people in this community really understand how much practical knowledge you have. CZcams is full of so called saw builders but none of them that I've seen were down in the trenches like you my man. Nothing fancy, just well built and tuned work saws. Some of these builders saws wouldn't last a week in camp, that is the true test for what a power saw can do in real world conditions.. Always something interesting comes from time spent on your channel.. Cheers to you and all the west coast fallers..

Great story telling sir, really enjoyed you sharing your experience. Stihl did notice that rod bearing issue like you mentioned and went with 13 needle roller bearings in the later 064 and thereafter. They had 12 in the beginning, part number was revised for the new crankshaft. I completely agree its the over free revving that kills con rod, im a husky guy and i gotta swallow my pride and say this they just dont make like these anymore 064/066/660 is hands down one of the best if not the best saw ever made. Pretty much bulletproof and trouble free. They kept making it for our 3rd world market until recently, i believe last batch of saws had 2019 year stamp on the cylinder and they were made by stihl in house. No longer made by KS towards end of production, port timing usually was at 96/120/80 with tight squish at 0.5mm. Over here guys run 404 chain and with aggressive rakers so they blow pto side case bearing and wallow out the bearing pocket, its operator error i guess. Otherwise they're the best, the vibes on this models do tickle my fingers since im a husky guy but I'd still pick it for work if i have to choose one!

It's cool watching your channel because just earlier today I got my order from Walkers. Abd I installed my bark box, air filter and dogs for my 462. feels like a real saw now! 👍 definitely no 066 though! Lol
Great story! In '84 I took over a remotely located company saw shop with 49 saws, a real dump and got things in shape and all running good. Good memories!

This video is great. REAL world knowledge! I’m thinking about driving 40 miles today to get a 660 Magnum for $800. Looks in good condition. This video helped me decide if 660 is s good deal in today’s world. I do like old saws. I have an awesome Shindaiwa 757, 488 and my first saw I bought around 97’ Stihl Farm Boss 029 Super. You made me feel comfortable and reassured my decision that looking at that 660 is a good thing. I’m a casual wood cutter but I want quality saws. And I also still ride. Going on 57. I have a 2016 Wr250f. Handles way better than my old 84’ Yamaha XT 550.
The 394 & 395 were excellent answers to the 066. Absolute screamers! But that old 066 was an absolute beast. It just pulls chain. Great video and thanks for sharing some earned experience. Give us a video on porting strato intakes. Gut 'em? Smooth 'em? Vent 'em? or leave 'em alone?

I like to give you a call Donnie to discuss the 066 demo I got back in 98’ from the late Dave Ellis. The saw has low hours. Dave also worked a cylinder for me that I still have to go on it. I like an idiot didn’t keep a close enough eye on the air filter flocking and sure enough the fines locked the bottom end up and I’d love to send it out and have you lay hands and work your magic on it brother

Love my 066s an my ms461 is also really growin on me i still fall alot of timber with the pair of 066 an the new to me 461 got my 1st big husky comin 395xp. I gonna try husky out while im still cuttn.
I love my Stihl 066 Magnum Redlight! Great compression and horsepower! I got a new carburetor and clutch installed recently so it runs and cuts great. Also, own a Stihl MS361 with a Wojo ported muffler and a chain oiler for a Stihl MS461 to run a 24” bar.

Like you said there are those guys that don’t Take care of there saws very rough and abusive No chainsaw will last “nobody touch’s my 066 & 660.“ They are reliable and powerful maybe not the quickest cutting 90cc saw but Who cares they get the job done.

GREAT video, your love for the 066 reminds me of how enamored I am (though for me they're still a bit new/novel, only got my 1st one like 1/2yr ago) but am "team 660" and agree-with/encourage its usage as "the baseline platform" for saw-discussion, IE I love when people use it for "porting tutorials" and the like, it's 1 of the best platforms ever I have mapped "power-per-pound" and through the Stihl lineup power increases with weight of powerhead up til the 660, then the 880 drops-off quite dramatically...the 660 is clearly "the champion" & deserving of Stihl's naming it their official Timbersports powerhead. You say "066's", are these synonymous to 660's in your eyes? For context/my bias, I'm working/building/loving my pair of faux 660's (lots of OEM but not the crankcases or big-bore or pop-up's!), and - in seeing Stihl swapping to the 661 - it's crossed my mind there *could* come a time when 660 aftermarkets are no longer well-supported (regardless of one's opinion of such products, I buy them knowing they all need some degree of refinishing before customization/enhancement!) and going for an OEM 661 had been strongly on my mind... Hearing you speak here changed that, it's now a 441 OR a 7310 (if down-sizing displacement the 7310 becomes real appealling to me real quick!) I'm blown away seeing how late Stihl manufactured 660's, especially when I consider the market-value I just found out my OEM flywheel/rewind casing assembly is worth (literally buying an aftermarket as I don't feel right bringing a >$150 flywheel case in on my work-saw LOL!) I'd been an Echo guy only, still love them (I'm a climber and 2511's are just tops) but for displacement the 660 platform is just perfect and it says a LOT that, despite the age of its creation, its HP/lbs output BEATS modern units (the 500i for example, a 660 is better HP/lbs, cannot imagine why one would choose the 500 but hey) Some just don't like the idea of controlled-carb/intelligent-operation and want simple (for crying out loud I've removed transfer port bridges, like the upper&lower separation bridge, just for simpicity of "proper formation" of a ported transfer loop) and I'd thought the 590 was simple & fun to work on but the 660 is the epitome of easy, big-bore'ing it properly was a bit of a challenge but think I may've found a workaround that'd let most people nail such builds easily, took me 3 jugs to get one that could beat my built 54mm unit! Cannot believe how many months I'd gone w/o remembering there was another *king* of powersaw-performance and finally feel at a point I can understand more/most of what you're putting-down, am very eager to go through your library actually am gonna put you as a recommended-channel on my channel's homepage with "the other greats" :D Thanks again it's so great that people like you take the time to keep the community charging-ahead, *none* of this stuff is done in a vacuum and us "outdoor 2-strokers" w/o pipes are a tiny, difficult niche indeed!!

Hi there donny I recently picked up a 066 red-light with a scored piston and small chips in the cylinder plating. I've seen some people say the old red-light have very good port timing numbers and I do like to try and run oem when applicable as a motorcycle technician I know most of the time oem will last forever if taken care of properly. Anyway my question is. Would it be worth the cost to have my cylinder re-plated and toss a good aftermarket piston with cabers in it or should I just get a hyway or meteor kit for $140 and clean up the ports alittle and send it. This saw will primarily be used for milling with a 36 or 32in bar as the limit. Thank you sir. I have heard many good things about your work and look forward to your suggestions. Names Chris

Hey Donny, could you please explain these Governors on old Carbs. How do they work and how to tune these Saws. I have a Dolmar 133super and a 143 with governed Carbs and is it a good idea to block them. I know how to tune normal Saws and Carbs.

Yes get the 660 for 800 make sure in perfect shape make sure it’s oem not rebuild with junky after market parts

Like my 066 as well but it only gets used occasionally, 044 has been my go-to saw for our type trees since the mid 90s.

Hi there donny I recently picked up a 066 red-light with a scored piston and small chips in the cylinder plating. I've seen some people say the old red-light have very good port timing numbers and I do like to try and run oem when applicable as a motorcycle technician I know most of the time oem will last forever if taken care of properly. Anyway my question is. Would it be worth the cost to have my cylinder re-plated and toss a good aftermarket piston with cabers in it or should I just get a hyway or meteor kit for $140 and clean up the ports alittle and send it. This saw will primarily be used for milling with a 36 or 32in bar as the limit. Thank you sir. I have heard many good things about your work and look forward to your suggestions. Names Chris
Donny. I have an 066 magnum I bought new 25 years ago or so. Can you port it up and do what you do to make it even better for me? I do volunteer disaster relief work all over the u.s. Keep up the great content about your saw knowledge!

Hey Donny, could you please explain these Governors on old Carbs. How do they work and how to tune these Saws.
I have a Dolmar 133super and a 143 with governed Carbs and is it a good idea to block them. I know how to tune normal Saws and Carbs.
