Agreed. Dreamworks ALLOWS Puss to be a hero, Disney DOESN'T allow Buzz to.
Or Icarus, or Dr. Strange (or Wanda for that matter), or Ant Man, or Hawkeye. At least Kamala got to be a hero (fighting an amalgamation of immigration and the FBI - because, in the end, the demon from another dimension willing to erase this one to get home isn't the villain, America is). The only heroic hero Disney put out was Spiderman (and that was really made by Sony).

Frankly, it seems like Disney’s attitude to representation these days is “putting others down to prop others up.“
This! It should be representing through showing strengths and weaknesses in both. That way everyone is seen as human and not a stereotype.
Cept in the movie on the thumbnail to this video, in which a lot of hateful bigots are using to put down the entire gay/lesbian community in order to prop up their bigoted conservative christian views, which are backed by pseudo-science, which dictates that our biology is responsible for half our decision making and how we *should* *be* regardless of what we want.

And race swapping. Either make a new character who is totally blant and has no flaws, basicly is just his/her skincolor/sexuality, or race/genderswap a beloved character, as if this somehow works. Guess which characters are still used in merch and video games? Exactly, the original animated versions.
It's not that greate to only bring up these two movie as if you look at the whole of Disney movie history a lot of there movies have focused on women especially there most well know fairytale movies. And if you look at other movie and TV shows you see more examples of the white characters getting focus while shunting aside a lot of the poc characters. This is especially seem in a lot of the tv shows. I think Disney is realising that there other demographics that can be focused on. Also I think it in some way to sort of address the past that Disney had a racism.

Another thing I hated about light year, was that Buzz didn't feel like Buzz, in toy story he was clueless, heroic, oblivious, but still kind and a good friend. In light year, he was literally none of that. If I was Andy I would be like "Mom, turn it off"

The Buzz in the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command cartoon show was far closer to his Toy Story counterpart.

He was just the clueless and oblivious part. They wrote him so that all the other characters could get the spotlight when it was his movie. This was suppose to be a movie about buzz lightyear, not 4 or 5 random people and then buzz lightyear 😑
Lightyear was a movie written by people who clearly never actually watched Toy Story and had no idea who Buzz was. Instead of a fun sci-fi action adventure movie, we got a space drama that was boring and not interested in following the story of Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story
Audiences: "We want ABC."
Disney: "Well here's XYZ. Give us money."
Audiences: "No."
Disney: "Bigots!"
Not sure which I want more, for them to learn their lesson and start telling good stories again, or to completely crash and burn.
Well, there's one thing we can be sure of : they WILL either learn their lesson, or crash and burn... But I really hope it will be the first option.
You could compromise and go LMNO, the middle, and they'd still reject it DEMANDING the scale be on their end or deem you bigots, ...phobes, racist, all that. That's how bad it is.

I'm a grown-ass man and I still tear up at Perrito comforting Puss during his panic attack. No words, no swell of emotional music, just a quiet scene and an incredible moment between two characters. Imagine Disney trying to do that scene. These days I think they're literally incapable of writing genuine character growth moments like that.
I don’t think Disney has majorly moved me since Mulan-THE ANIMATED Mulan. Genuinely funny and heartwarming-but with a feminist message that isn’t cringe inducing. Her father comforting her for being a late bloomer? Mulan sneaking out and heading to probably her death to save him? The emperor and ALL OF CHINA bowing to Mulan in thanks? What happened to the Disney staff from that time period?
And Perrito is awesome he reminds me of my boyfriend and is so cute he's a wonderful character just like Puss 😊

But this disturbing trend of remaking old Disney films and fixing things that didn’t need fixing…it’s like a master class on making films worse. Can anyone tell me they like any of the remakes better?
Let's not forget that head of Pixar, Pete Doctor, said that Lightyear failed because they "expected too much of the audience." Even in today's climate I've never heard something so condescending from a studio head. This movie earned it's failure.

12:14 I don't think it's silly at all. _Puss in Boots 2_ really tries (and succeeds) in writing an fun, yet mature story, which deals with heavy themes like the inevitability of death surprisingly well, and also how terrifying anxiety attacks can be. Yet the movie deals with those without feeling pandering. What I really like about Puss' panic attack in the film is how it is treated as a serious thing, and with respect. You don't see characters making fun of him or treating as a joke, and you don't see Perrito suddenly going like "This is my time to shine and finally fulfill my dream of becoming a therapy dog!"; no, he just approaches Puss, and rests his head on him. It's a nearly silent, quick moment that delivers an emotional punch to the gut, and it works wonderfully.
Don’t forget kitty is a far more likable and entertaining “strong female character” than anything Disney has come up with in years

This. And to be clear, Puss in Boots has plenty of modern ideas. Kitty is a strong female lead, Puss has plenty of vulnerabilities and fears as well as a toxic masculine complex, Perrito shows that it’s ok to have therapy help, etc. The reason Puss in Boots pulls these ideas off so well is because it’s organic. It’s as if it was never the main goal to prove these points; they just showed up while a different plot was going on.

Not to mention, Jack Horner, much like Dr Eggman… was just such the perfect villain. A completely irredeemable monster that we have no reason to root for, but extremely entertaining and hilarious.

I just started re-watching old Tom and Jerry spoofs from the 40s and 60s on HBO Max and I'm surprised how much plot and simplicity they always managed to fit into 7 minutes.
Was there borderline misogyny here in there? Sure, the romantic episodes were from a dated time period, but do I think these episodes deserve to be canceled by our woke / cancelculture gen z?
No. I don't. Stories today are not what they used to be 25 years ago because people just don't care to tell a genuinely good story with a beginning middle and end.
The only kind of stories you can find like that are in shows like Gravity Falls or Adventure Time

You know what bothers me about the whole thing? How male characters even with reasonable "masculine" traits like self-pride, confidence, and toughness are often shamed for being toxic, while female characters with actually bad masculine traits like being insensitive, being bullies, beating people up for any perceived sleight against them, bellicose behavior, narcissism, meanness, and generally being peacocking dickheads are praised as "strong female characters".

At least this Buzz is "supposed to be a new character". In Toy Story 4, they also ruined the actual Buzz and also Woody by making them both bumbling idiots to prop up Bo Peep, the "strong independent woman" character.

And their obsession with pushing non white characters and women to the forefront by putting male characters down is taking over everything. In Incredibles 2, Bob is no longer strong and resourceful like the first movie. He's weak and childish while Helen is the hero.

I once knew a girl who liked villains so much that she hated heroes for ruining their fun.
She didn't care about the innocent people victimised by these characters, she thought it was funny.
I'm seeing a lot of movies/tv shows now that seem to hold the same beliefs and it's ruining storytelling because the creators just don't get it.

Like I get wanting to make cool villains, and that you want heroes to be “cool” just like those villains, but making them toxic and uncaring and selfish and overpowered and among other things, but those “heroes” need to at least understand that what they are doing is wrong and try to fix it at the end of the movie

Heroes who will get pushed back and slammed to the ground over and over and over again, but always stand back at the end with more understanding of the world?
What happened to a hero who is kind hearted because of ignorance of the world who goes through so much they lose there innocent but still hold their too big of a bleeding heart in their hands for everyone, not because they are still ignorant, but because now they have another reason to help

Describing Disney movies as lectures lacking nuance is right on the money. I have to wonder about the priorities of the board when they see this stuff, are they really looking after shareholders or do they have different ambitions in mind?
Shareholders. Apparently there's a variable in place for that. It came out when Netflix had their Chapelle scandal early last year. Netflix stock went down cause of his special and the twitter reactions it created, despite actual increased earnings.
I have similar thoughts: If you look closely, Strange World and Lightyear are extremely conservative stories with a progressive packaging.
What's the message? Keep status quo, don't try to overcome any boundaries. There is nothing out there. Don't try to improve.

They look progressive, but they are the complete opposite. Maybe that's the point: Teaching children keep in line and NOT to rebel against anything because society is perfect the way it is. Never argue with the crowd...

It's the ESG scoring system (Environmental, Social, and Governance issues) propagated by Larry Fink and BlackRock, which own significant shares of Disney. If they're not woke enough, their ESG scores decline, which affects "attractiveness to investors" and consequently their share price.
As an "adopted" kid myself (grandmother took care of me since I was 8 months old) every time Goldi-lock's scene comes up I am ALWAYS moved to tears. I have found NO OTHER movies that can do this. Not the beginning of UP, not even not even Iroh's Tale.

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish was so refreshing. I was thrilled that not only was it not a pandering, lecturing mess, but it was a lovely tale about a character we cared about having his own flaws and mortality. I love how easy it was to live that film.

@@BaggageClaim This is clickbait. The director didn't come across as someone who deliberately wanted to tone down or emasculate or humiliate Buzz. In fact, I think some artists overthink what they create and sometimes miss the brand. In his eyes, he thought he made Buzz a complex super serious character
I also loved the side story of Goldilocks and the bears about being adopted and different yet still one of them. Woke ideology would have her be unable to be truly a member of the family and have her leave to be with her own kind and kept segregated.

Even if the director didn't talk emasculation, the current Hollywood zeitgeist of deconstructing heroes is the water they all swim in. It basically has to be intentionally avoided to prevent it from ending up in films now.

Animated films were successful to a big part on the novelty of CGI/animation but these days we're jaded and need more. If you're hung up on the dying platform of 2-hour something cinemas then sure, get depressed, but if you want to not be a depressive critic then know that the series format is thriving and most animated series these last years are (I think) often superior to most animated films in the past.
I don't like the spiderverse films but alot of people seem to, and with Puss in Boots, I'd say the hitrate is pretty damn good for animated films too.

I realize now that I only ever enjoyed robin hood cause of the amazing animation, not cause of the music or all the amazing characters.
It's this kind of misconception which leads to newer works with fancy animation indeed but with blank characters no one can relate with..
To prove your point further about the whole "masculinity being toxic" concept, let's use Arnold Schwarzenegger's character from "Predator" as an example. I didn't respect that character because he magically figured out that he had to ask for help from good friends to out thwart the Predator because dealing with scary monsters on your own is impossible. I respected his character because despite being the traditional masculine man, he had to figure out a way to deal with this scary monster trying to hunt him on his own while being terrified.
My four year old niece loves Buzz Lightyear and saw all three Toy Story movies, and upon watching Lightyear my brother said not only did she fidget the whole time and fell asleep half way, but she wasn't interested in watching the movie again. Now upon showing her "Star Command", she sat and watched every episode with intrigue and interest. She remembered 80% of characters from the Star Command show and could only recall two characters from Lightyear, which definitely says something

I honestly don't know why anyone thought that doing this Lightyear movie was a good idea. I didn't watch it but just hearing and reading about it made me think why!? We had the Star Command animation we really didn't need this movie.
I think what makes Disney's idea of "representation" often so unlikable is the clear ulterior motive behind it. They just want brownie points for being "woke" because that's what they think will get them the best reviews and the most money. There's a huge difference between setting an arbitrary quota for "diversity" out of pandering (which is what Disney is doing) and coincidentally happening to have a few "diverse" characters simply because they got imagined into existence that way by the writer.
It feels like tokenisation more than true representation. So yeah, not useful at all.
Encanto was a better way to do it: exploring a different culture, rather than stripping minorities of their own culture and plopping them into the movie.
As the CZcamsr “The Canadian Lad” said, “Don’t write strong female characters, write strong characters who are female.” And I think this also applies to every possible character trait

Especially since Wayne Knight gave us a great Zurg in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.
Disney has become so obsessed with the idea of the "Twist" villain or the villain being some contortion or reflection of the main characters thinking that's "Deep" writing that they've COMPLETELY forgotten how to write good, straight forward villains that have instant appeal for one reason or another.
Puss n Boots 2 had all THREE forms of a traditional villain; Goldilocks was the sympathetic villain, Jack Horner was the straight forward bad guy who owned his lack of morality wholesale, and Death was the neutral evil that is a force of nature made villain only through circumstance but is utterly terrifying for that reason.
What does Disney have?
A catalogue of twist villains and self reflection. EVERY character either turns out to be suddenly evil without any real character to make them compelling at all OR the villain was one of the main characters the whole time and it's time to reflect on yourself. Self reflection isn't bad, but jesus, Disney has played this card so many times at this point that it is mind numbing.

As a Latino (my dad being Puerto Rican and my mom being Cuban) I just want to watch a movie I can enjoy that has a meaningful thought provoking message. Representation is great but I want something enjoyable for years to come because what connects me to a character is not their sexuality or the color of their skin, it's their innermost personal struggles that they have to deal with and overcome these obstacles.

The saddest thing for me is that I can't enjoy movies with my family. They wanted to watch Lightyear, they thought it was good, but I didn't. I can't enjoy it and ended up spoiling the mood, becoming the joy killer for them. I just don't know what to do anymore. Puss in Boots 2 was awesome for me to enjoy with them, finally.

That buzz situation was my situation with my parents in puss in boots 2 my parents just... didn't like it one bit when I was hyping It up to be as great as it is but after the movie ended they literally came up to me and said "that movie wasn't great you lied."
Crazy thing is that there was a time when children's movies were mostly about ethics, moral lessons, friendship, love, family and learning to surpass your limitations...strange times!

The fact that it's called Lightyear but he's not the hero is just a long line of movies deconstructing, subverting, and effectively destroying existing characters. It's much much harder to subvert something new! So they keep destroying existing characters until there will be literally *none* left.

@@lolamalu I first remember being shocked seeing the (little known) BBC adaptation of Agatha Christie's "ABC Murders" in 2018, where Poirot was completely deconstructed. But you made me realize "The Force Awakens" is even earlier than that, in 2015!
It's about destroying heroic action IMO. "Be yourself", but, like, don't risk too much or work so hard that others will feel "less than". Jeez, you have to wonder whether América would've been discovered in this generation, but then, that was also a cruel colonialist mistake, right?
That's partially why I was surprised they made Strange World. Obviously it failed, but for once Disney didn't just use an existing IP and existing characters to tell their garbage story. They made an entirely new movie to showcase their garbage characters and stories and it was rightfully a big flop. At least it flopped without taking down established characters like Lightyear and other recent movies and shows. I hope they do that more. This way it'll be very obvious there's not a big audience for this stuff and they might cut it out, or if something succeeds it won't be based on nostalgia and memberberries.
@@iSOBigD They somehow made Cars 3 work with this mindset of "bring in someone new, but hey remember the older characters of this franchise, here's them passing the torch." so why they can't do it in Marvel or other properties is mind blowing. Storm doesn't respect Lightning sure, but the fact that Cruz Ramirez was actually inspired BY Lightning is just....I dunno I love that. It rings true to so many of us young ladies out there-we look up to a lot of male figures, both in real life and fiction.
AND THAT'S OKAY. She was inspired by his wins, by his racing, and that in turn inspired him to be her mentor, just as Doc was inspired to be his mentor when he saw Lightning change. It didn't feel like the modern day "see here's this young GIRL BOSS who can do things so EASY." movie because it wasn't.
Cruz struggled with her self worth and confidence, it wasn't until she finally raced against Lightning and trained with him that she saw her skills. It managed to not only subvert most expectation of "okay Lightning will retire and Cruz will take his spot" but it told a good lesson of "go out on your own terms, respect those who came before, and pass the torch on when you're ready."
IF ONLY DISNEY COULD REMEMBER THIS WHEN IT COMES TO MARVEL GOD DAMMIT. I mean even SCREAM FIVE passed the torch better than most of their movies.

Interesting to note: PiB:LW also has strong female characters like the Disney/Pixar films - those being Kitty Softpaws and Goldi. Both are shown to be incredibly good at fighting and don't have as much (though they still have them occasionally) slapstick moments as the male characters do. But I feel like audiences accept these types of 'girl-bosses' because they're still shown to have something to learn. For as much as Kitty may show up Puss in the fights with Jack's men, she can still get overpowered and is shown to be a bit of a hot-head. She also has to learn to trust again and be vulnerable. Goldi, meanwhile, has to learn to accept what she has and see the love in her found family instead of pursuing a fairytale ideal. Add in the fact that Puss is allowed to be awesome in the moments that truly matter and I can see why these characters would be a bit easier to swallow.
Goldi and Kitty are treated like characters instead of Plot Devices or Unatainable paragons of kick butt. They are treated with the same dignity as the rest of the cast and good glory, is it refreshing.

Bad writers tend to project themselves into what they write; I'd love to say it's some sort of conspiracy but that's really all there is to it. You have weak writers hired for political reasons writing the only way they know how and those overseeing them are too scared to say "look, not every character you write should reflect your personal values".

HAHAHAHA true facts-- and unfortunately, weak writers ONLY know how to write characters with their views. Which is why all their antagonist fall flat. They literally cannot put themselves into the shoes of someone else outside of their perspective, and they have the nerve to call everyone else small minded and afraid of outsiders.
Writing a good character takes two things. The first is introspection. The second is apathy towards that character.
The first reason is fairly simple. You need to know where you end and your character begins, and need to know how much of 'you' you need to put into the character to get them started. And I say started because the process of developing a character is not simple. Good characters will change and develop over the course of writing to reflect the story's environment, themes, struggles, and tone. Having a kernel, a non-blank slate that a writer can latch onto in order to get that started is valuable.
The second reason is so you can hurt the character, punish them, throw them through hell, and maybe even kill them for the sake of the story. Modern Disney movies have been putting their writer characters above the story and it's easy to see. Their pet characters get the golden treatment while every strawman character gets made an example of. Meanwhile Puss tangos with the literal personification of Death and is traumatized for it.
WOW! I just realized that Lightyear is the near exact opposite of Moana. One person goes out on an adventure to "save" everyone with the "everyone" telling the one to not "go beyond" what is already known.
Moana is a racial woman, so it's OK for her.

It would've been so cool to see obviously animatronic monsters, men in alien costumes, chasing Buzz and his alien comrades from the 'Buzz Lightyear' animated series and then occasionally have him replaced with a stunt double who looks nothing like Buzz at all, during the more intense action scenes.

Everything about Lightyear doesn't scream a 90's movie at all. And something tells me the writers completely screwed up the timeline. They're more focused on wanting to write THE MESSAGE rather than actually be entertaining to the audience.
I've been on a DreamWorks binge and I was so surprised to realize how deep some of those movies were. Kung-fu Panda, Shrek, the writing was amazing!

as a woman, it's really frustrating to see women be so readily able to fight, and have moments that are unearned. I would RATHER look up to Captain America vs Captain Marvel, because I can not only relate to Cap, but I respect him. I admire Loki for his journey and hate Sylvie because she's just on such a high horse. You understand it, but you can't condone what she did. But the show makes you WANT to be on her side so badly. It's the same with Wanda in MoM; they want you the audience to SO BADLY sympathize with her, like you understood Thanos, but you can't because unlike Thanos, who's plan in a weird dark twisted way made some sense, Wanda's was just to kill a mother and kidnap that Wanda's children. You can't root for someone like that but the film wants you to. Honestly, Wanda being the big bad of the multiverse saga would've been such a power move from marvel but no they fast traveled to it and it ruined her character as a result.

And ATLAB had strong diversity and female empowermet messages, but unlike todays media..ATLAB interweaves the message into the story.
Katara, Toph, Korra, Azula is even the baddest toughest fighter. But nobody questioned it. You genuinely believed bcos they showed her childhood drive to be the best, better than the rest.

I agree with all your points. The fact that Disney thought it was a good idea to release Lightyear on father's day weekend with a main character that would attract boys (and all kids) only to wrap it around all those themes shows that they have lost their way
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was incredible, it has a great story, awesome characters, new villians, i also love the wild west feel of the movie with the wanted posters and all, Kitty made an awesome entry, Perrito was adorable, Puss was badass as always, Goldie and the Bear Crime family were actually not evil, Goldie understood the importance of her family, Jack tho, while he's not that scary, he's a bad guy, no reason, he's just bad and there's Death, who's f**king incredible, the final battle between him and Puss made me sit literally on the edge of my seat. My friends made fun of me for watching a children's movie, but they missed one of the best movies ever. I would easily give Puss in Boots: The Last Wish a 10/10, and Puss gained my respect and became my favorite fiction cat.

When puss is witnessing his past lives, they don't preach to him what he needs to hear. Puss realizes it all on his own. Character growth and agency right there, so damn refreshing
Top Gun 2 was a nice fun romp where the old hero still has a few tricks left. Avatar 2 feels like the first act of a new character arc, but I'm excited to see where it goes. Puss in Boots 2 feels like a full and complete story.
I stopped watching new Disney stuff since 2016, a contrast to how much we continue to watch the classic Disney movies, which are some of the best ones ever made.
My main issue with Strange World is that Disney already made the perfect team adventure film in Atlantis. They could have just copy and paste the Atlantis characters into Strange World, and it would have been 10 times better. Each character needs to be interesting in their own right, which is rare to find nowadays.
Atlantis was dope. I recently watched it with my husband, who had never seen it. When the Disney logo appeared in the end credits, he shook his head and said, "Shame on them." Because Atlantis is a genuinely fun, well-written, well-paced movie, and Disney has fallen very, very far now.

This is the exact conversation I've been discussing with friends and family. We were talking about how movies are lecturing people. It's one thing with adults, but with children, you want them to feel like they're in a magical world and are about to be in an adventure. Not feel bad about existing or be lectured to accept things and keep your mouth shut.
I haven't seen a new movie for a very long time. Film used to be a wonderful hobby of mine and now I cant enjoy anything because I'm being told how to act and feel.

The older generations being seen as stupid was actually the major reason I didn't like Turning Red. There was no exchange and negotiation between the mom and the daughter. I 100% agree that the mom took it too far at points in the movie, but so did the daughter. But instead of making it a way for them to learn from each other, the movie ends with the daughter blatantly just deciding not to listen to the mom at all anymore and was treated as the hero in the right.
Unlike Brave. Brave was the real deal 💯

I loved Klaus for this reason. It would have been so easy for them to make the father figure at the beginning antagonistic, and for the son to go through his arc and be like "See dad, I CAN make it on my own--I showed you!" But instead, we got a father who loved his son enough to teach him a tough lesson, a son humble enough to adapt and accept that lesson, and a relationship that grew in mutual respect at the end.
This old X young thing was ther core conflict in Turning Red and it's equally mishandled. The kid is so obnoxious and self-assured, and in the end her disobedience is 100% validated. She learns nothing, because she wasn't wrong in her rebellion.
Puss in boot also feels like it has an refreshing animation style compared to Disney movies . Puss in boots feels much more exciting and overall the animation is just so good.

Puss in boots 2 animation is not 100% CGI but uses CGI +drawn animation to give 2.5D design, same as Arcane series. And this artstyle fits Puss the best.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the old Buzz Lightyear of Star Command Special where Buzz learns to rely and trust rookies while still ends up being the hero at the end. While it's not the best, it certainly has that 90s homage to it and you would totally understand why boys like Andy would want a Buzz Lightyear. Quite frankly its the same conflict done right. Buzz in that isn't a lone wolf because he's trying to hog glory for himself. He's a lone wolf because he feels incredibly guilty for the loss of his partner and he doesn't want to be responsible for a rookie's death.
I'm so thankful that channels like yours exist. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who feels like the magic is lost with Disney because I'm too caught up with nostalgia. Thank you for explaining why that the quality in movies is declining in a manner I can't do myself.
Remember the show "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command?" The pilot movie had a similar plot as "Lightyear," but did it MUCH better. Buzz worked alone because he was grieving the loss of his partner. Seeing how PIXAR brilliantly handles grief and loss before, THAT would've been a better fit for Lightyear than just being arrogant.

From what I heard Buzz Lightyear of Star Command wasn't actually a Pixar production, this is why it hasn't been acknowledged by Pixar since supposedly they were salty about Disney "playing with their toys" pretty much, and why Lightyear barely draws from it and claims that it was that and not BLOSC that Andy watched (but after Lightyear flopped the director backpedaled and now claims that BLOSC is a spin-off of Lightyear that inspired the toys in the Toy Story films).
But you're absolutely right that BLOSC executed a lot of the same concepts much better (Such as Buzz having an actual reason for wanting to work alone, and the rookies not being laughably incompetent for no other purpose than to advance the plot like they are in Lightyear)

Another problem with "Lightyear" is that it's supposed to be one that Andy would have watched as a kid in the 90s. It's supposed to be the in-universe movie that launched the Buzz Lightyear action figures into toy stores. Honestly, that doesn't seem realistic. The Buzz Lightyear of Star Command cartoon does a better job of fulfilling this role than the movie. It seems like the kind of show a young Andy would watch and the kind of show made with the purpose of selling toys, like many toys in the 80s and 90s.

I have a lot of toddlers around me and tbh, explaining such complex Topics to them, doesn’t work. They don’t get why boys and girls are different but then we should all be equal and so on.. that’s why a lot of parents would rather go to the more “traditional” way of educating - I.e boys use short hair, girls long hair, etc. and once they are old enough and have developed more their critical thinking skills THEN they teach them all the nuances..
I think it’s best way to go just to not confuse them with so many details but at the same time, you teach to respect everyone.
kids NEED to categorize the world, its how language develops. Once their brains develop into more complex thought THEN you can introduce nuance.

If you want a good Buzz Lightyear movie, I firmly recommend "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" and the ensuing TV show. I went back to watch it again, and honestly, it's better than I remember, and has a lot of stuff that feels like is missing from modern movies.
Mira Nova is a GREAT strong female character, but she never outclassed Buzz - she locked horns with him, but it was always clear that Buzz had more experience than her and called the shots. Not to mention, I LOVED Zurg. He was so relentlessly malicious and reveled in his own villainy, he was funny, but when he got serious, you really feared his presence. Not to mention, he TECHNICALLY wins, if only for a short time. Plus, I loved Booster, he was clearly comedic relief, but he wasn't a big dumb muscle alien, he was actually probably the most studious of the group. And XR was actually entertaining and made a good comedic foil to the group.
If you want Buzz Lightyear done right? Watch that movie and the animated series. They are just plain old fun!

I absolutely loved Puss in Boots 2. We saw it twice. Reminded me of the type of movie you’d get in the Disney renaissance … except even better. The themes of life and death were masterfully handled, the animation was beautiful, and the character design and development were superb. I love Goldilocks character design SO MUCH - a small detail but great to see cohesive work being done when everything else in entertainment is a garbage pile.

Disney these days is trying to make us think, but DreamWorks wants to make us feel.
There's a lot of issues in Lightyear that honestly makes the "woke moment" almost an afterthought. Why did the ENTIRE ship have to land on the planet instead of sending a landing party, or a scout ship like millions of other sci-fi properties have? Why did the planet go from being the most hostile in the galaxy to suddenly habitable and safe to live on? The reason they crashed was because of Kaiju-sized vines that grabbed onto the ship and pulled it down. What if those same vines came back and just wiped out their whole base? They just accepted their fate and at no point do any of them say they're radioing for help. Are we to assume that ALL of Star Command was that single ship, and they just made home on the first planet they couldn't escape from? Some could argue I'm overthinking this but again, in a million other sci-fi properties, these would be problems that would be addressed, but they just... don't because the plot has to happen. Not to mention that those smaller vines went from being a threat to just, part of their normal lives. It feels weird that no one in that entire colony wanted to leave, that Buzz was the only one obsessed with getting back to space, but honestly what hurts this movie is that, I think, it's stuck between wanting to be that sci-fi property that Buzz Lightyear represented in the Toy Story universe, and being a Disney/Pixar movie. They can't be too violent, they can't have any deaths (no deaths by giant alien bugs or sentient vines at least), no cursing, and it has to be for kids/all ages.
And then they shot themselves in the foot saying that it's a 90s movie, and it's the movie that made Andy want a Buzz Lightyear toy. No, Lightyear is the 2022 reboot of the 90s property that Andy took his kids to, and was disappointed in how they messed up his childhood franchise.
It's a far cry from movies like The Incredibles, that's for sure. It's sad to think that disney and pixar used to be capable of making dark, gritty, grounded movies that appealed to kids and adults equally, and now all we have are child proofed, soulless, condescending political lectures that don't appeal to kids or adults. It's too bad that the Incredibles was basically Disney's only foray into a more adult oriented style of animated movie. Not even the Incredibles 2 could follow in its footsteps. That kind of tone would have suited Lightyear well I reckon. It's meant to be a movie about an old-fashioned hero type after all.

Honestly, the worst part is truly down to evil Buzz (I refuse to call him Zurg). According to his own words, he just *FOUND* an alien warship in seemingly perfect condition, with a working army, human-useable mech suit, and presumably all the food and various other supplies he'd need to last 50 or so years on it. I can't get over that, because it feels half-assed beyond measure: Evil Buzz just *found* all this crap, and can use it, and that's that. The fact he also hotwired a bunch of human tech into it, when Buzz was never shown to be that smart is even worse, nevermind he somehow made the whole thing into a time machine with a time travel method I really don't think can be put in reverse.
Disney's top-tier worldbuilding right there, folks
Woke ideas are rarely ever the main problem. If you do it correctly, a gay relationship doesn't need to result in a conversation, it just doesn't. Messages of diversity and kindness can just be, a part of the movie.
But it NEVER feels like it's actually a part of the movie. If feels like a fucking advertisment. Nobody, not even the people making it, like advertisements. The product is never a problem, it's always, always, the annoyance of the advertisement itself. If anything, adds have always made me hate the product more. I genuinely take a note not to buy certain things if they've been shoved in my face.
That's real foreboding considering I'm a gay person. People could hate me because Disney is full of shit writers who are strawmaning my existence. (Not just gay, but feminism, racial diversity, any other "woke™" ideal)
Hollywood storytelling is so restricted these days, it's practically on rails and extremely predictable. That's why Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was such a breath of fresh air and my vote for family film of the year.
Admittedly I've rewatched Last Wish a couple times, like you said I've felt starved for good movies. It's like we've been wandering through the desert for years and Puss in Boots is a glass of cold fresh water

I didn't love the first Puss n Boots so I reluctantly watched the second and am glad I did. I was so entertained from the plot to the combat animation to insertion of fairytale characters to character development as well as not being predictable. And, that dog putting his chin on Puss' stomach made me tear up because it reminded me of my late min-pin/dachshund, Jack.

I’m incredibly conflicted about Disney lately. I’ve ALWAYS the been The Disney One in my circle of family and friends, and I still pay for Disney+ to watch all of my favorite movies and programs. But a corner of me feels guilty for it now. I feel like Walt would be ashamed of his company’s movies lately and I hope someone there realizes and acts on it at some point. I don’t want to see Disney go under - it inspired me to study animation and now themed entertainment. It’s been too big of a piece of my growing up.

I think it's very noteworthy how Puss really did live an empty life where he's a rockstar but nobody to connect with. He didn't realize that and neither does the audience. It feels like we go on that journey in that cave scene when Puss comes to that realization. A very show rather than tell us. 1:28 I will say how is this any different from the way the movie explores Death? Arguably with an even more night-marish antagonist.

Critical drinker is not the brightest I will admit. He is obviously quite surface level when it comes to reviewing movies and to often uses woke as some kind of all end joker card but I think when he actualy likes the movie he can make good points for why he likes it.

This is a fantastic analysis, and puts into words what we've all been feeling for quite some time now. Disney's recent movies absolutely do tend to feel more like out of touch lectures than they do entertaining and/or inspiring stories. They can cry and moan bigotry all they want, but when other studios are putting out better films, we're going to feel more incentive to watch those films instead. The Last Wish isn't just a reminder to us what good movies look like, it's a warning to Disney that they're out of excuses. They can either start putting out good movies like this one again, or customers will point themselves in the direction of studios that already do.
So a family member got us a Disney+ subscription and I've tried to have fun and make heavy use of it. We watched Lightyear and my young son really liked it, and I think he was just excited because it had Buzz in it; we also found the TV show on CZcams and have had fun watching that. After thinking more about the movie, I became annoyed at how Buzz's development seemed to be just coming to understand what some (better) person had already told him.
I watched Strange World mostly by myself just to see it, and I was...not a fan. To me, the message was delivered so strongly that essentially everything revolved around it. I didn't like the characters who were delivering it, but I didn't like the other ones either. Ultimately I couldn't really identify with or care about hardly anyone in that movie.

Thing is, exploring any of these character traits and weaknesses as a study of *personality* would be totally fine. It's when it becomes clear that the character is really a token for a message, and a stereotype, that I begin to switch off.
Puss in Boots 2 actually had great character development. Both protagonists and the antagonists, except one.
And even Jack was entertaining despite the lack of growth! One thing I loved was how some of the humor was based on how irredeemable he was willing to be. Even the cricket thinks he's horrible!

*This is the problem:*
A classic cornerstone of storytelling is flawed characters, character growth and a character arc. Look to Gilgamesh ffs, one of the oldest stories in time. Highly abridged: Gilgamesh seeks immortality, learns through his trials and adventures that it basically isn't possible, and decides to settle down, accept this, and build up his legacy in the form of building a great community for his people. An initially egotistical, self-centered goal transitions into a selfless one that's at peace with the nature of life. These formulas of character development are a tale as old as written history.
...But with anything "woke," the immediate issue is that if for example, a black character is portrayed as flawed, then people scream racism and flip out, outraged at their own assumption that this flaw is allegedly supposed to imply *ALL* black people ever showcase that flaw. For whatever reason, we are currently incapable of accepting that if a minority showcases a flaw, it could be specific to that individual...or at least, that seems to be the worry the writers have.
*The result is that anything based solely around minority groups is counter-intuitive. It mass produces Mary-Sue characters.* There is no flaw, there is no journey, there is nothing to learn. The minorities happily exist in a perfect bubble and, at worst, only need to "fix" a white character. Even then, it's awkward stories where the background minority characters effectively "puppet" the white character, as the white character is supposed to be a human shield that eats all the bullets that are character flaws, but with the growth or ingenuity still coming from the minorities. This too is just a downright awkward experience where we're left confused as to why the hero is even the hero when they lack redeeming qualities. Or as an example of the flip side: in Turning Red, the main character is a genuine Mary Sue with the mother being the one who undergoes character development. This too leaves us thinking "what was the point of the story?" when the hero was effectively fine as they were and didn't need to really do or learn anything.
Now let's go back a bit: remember Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? Will is full of flaws. He's young, he's ignorant, he can act rather stupid. He's just another young teen that still readily makes mistakes and has to learn and improve because of them, whether it be learning about his own bigotry when he assumes Geoffrey won't be well-received at a party because he's "just a butler," or just learning to show responsibility as all young teens should.
This formula *works.* This is a piece of media that understood that just because it has a black protagonist doesn't mean he should showcase flaws.
Ultimately, what we have to acknowledge is that this kind of media Disney is currently producing - ironically - only appeals to the most vile of us, who cannot acknowledge our own flaws and simply strive to be put on a pedestal automatically by virtue of who we are.
I think Turning Red showcases this best: I have no doubt the creator may have had a toxic asian parent and the story was very personal for her. And yes: toxic parenting where the children did nothing wrong is absolutely a thing.
But where Turning Red crosses the line from being a love letter to victims of toxic parenting is when they decided the protagonist is absolutely without flaw. *Why???*
As a comparison: Binding of Isaac also tells the story of toxic parenting, but we do not see Isaac portrayed as great or flawless. He's largely a blank slate anyone can insert themselves onto, and if anything, he's shown with flaws. (just genuinely referred to as unlovable, a stupid child who makes mistakes like eating mom's pills, or coping emotionally via bad methods) But his story *works.* We root for Isaac and want him to overcome these because we simply cannot help but feel sorry for this innocent child that doesn't deserve anything he's facing.
When Turning Red insists however that it's own "Isaac" needs to be perfect and smart and popular and perfect, we cross the line from simply telling victims of toxic parents that "it's okay, you didn't do anything wrong and don't deserve this," into an equally toxic message of "you're perfect, they're just stupid and can't recognize your greatness. Someday you'll have your moment." It's goes from being a love letter to victims to being a love letter to narcissists.
Puss in Boots was amazing. So happy they made that. Antonio Banderas is perfect for the role, and there’s just so much heart in this movie. A lot to love there, definitely recommended.
Pretty glad Dreamworks isn't bowing down to this woke movement. the logo change is pretty mid tho.
edit: after Megamid 2 and KFP4, I can't help but think Dreamworks saw the movie industry today and thought that failure was the status quo.

Your take on these films is insightful and right on the money. Disney, among other " entertainment " providers, has become a strident, progressive nag. Instead of relaxation and enjoyment, we are bombarded with lectures and messages, so I rarely watch any new movies at all.
Because Disney makes movies for people who are not their audience. Go figure.
Puss in Boots was soooo good 😊 my kids are obsessed, even my 13 year old brother liked it. I think it did so well because it's a universal classical hero's journey, it wasn't a lecture, but it had a great moral about mortality and love
Puss in Boots 2 was such a treat to watch. I loved everything about it (except the low frames during a fight scene). But it was such a breath of fresh air.
This is why I will forever adore the Shounen genre. It may be campy, or cringe at times but the fundamental values of heroism, bravery, friendship, selflessness, perseverance and even just plain kindness will forever remain timeless in any generation.
Just think for a moment while Disney is busy telling your kids that masculinity is a toxic trait, stories like Black Clover and My Hero Academia is out here telling you that you're not defined by how many times you fall, it's how many times you stand back up is what matters, that in the face overwhelming odds you will find victory through sheer will, persistence, unshakable determination, and the desire to not just to lift yourself but those around you as well. While everyone in Hollywood is actively trying to vilify one gender, there's Shokugeki No Soma that will tell you that your gender has no influence in your success, what makes or breaks you is your willingness to learn and hone your craft. While the entirety of western entertainment has lost its grasp on the concept of love in its stories, a book like Kaguya-sama will remind you of how beautiful love is.
Literally the only western studio I can think of that does this as good as those studios is dreamworks with its film trilogies and several stand alone movies.

Exactly. And they just take a position that allows them to pit both sides against each other. If someone who wants the good representation they deserve to have is disgruntled by bad insincere tokenism in these movies, the other side will just throw their hands up and say those people are never satisfied and are demanding too much.
If people on the other side rightfully call out how the representation is bad and dragging one gfoup down to prop another up, the first side will admit it’s bad but be afraid that they either get this or nothing at all.
We both want something better from the companies, we both can be happy and find ways to be represented. But we need to find common ground to take a stand on, and that starts with knowing that the companies are the real threat here.

You absolutely hit the nail on the head. It’s so sad that most rational, normal people are kind of leaving Disney behind, where it fell. What else are we to do? It won’t allow us to help it be better. So WE have to move on.
When DreamWorks is far better at making movies with great storytelling and incredibly written characters than Disney, that's where you take a moment to breathe a huge relieving sigh. Also, Disney is dying. Big time. Because when Disney tries to pander to literally everyone, including 'modern audiences', they end up pandering to no one. ABSOLUTELY. NO. ONE.

That's the thing about 'representation'. When I was a kid, I could relate to white, English speaking characters or any character that doesn't look like me or speak the same language as me cuz of their journey. And to start the journey, they need flaws. And at the end they improve on their flaws. It's such a backhanded offer to give characters who look like 'the people' and not give them anything. Cuz the characters 'could'nt have flaws', they need to be 'perfect' or else. And perfect, most of the time means boring. Idk if you can make perfect characters work but from my experience, it's boring and frustrating seeing a 'hero' not learn anything and it's everyone else's fault.
There are ways to write a perfect character who doesn't need to learn moral or life lessons in a way that's enjoyable

And imagine Hercules if he instead told people he's an expert beast slayer instead of the audience seeing it for themselves, or if he's fighting monsters like they're paid to make him look good. Basically imagine Hercules if he's Steven Seagal.

I wanna say Saitama from One Punch Man but he's absolutely not a perfect character since he lacks passion, motivation and urgency to be a hero. The writing in that makes you feel bad for him when he actually tries and people either ignore or doubt him.
Relatability is not about skin color. Anime, fantasy, movies about toys. What race is the penguin from toy stock? None. He’s a penguin.

I also love how The Last Wish actually has a diverse cast, but that doesn't even matter because their performances, their characters, and the writing all speak for themselves. That's how it should be! Strange World and Lightyear plaster themselves in so-called diversity with literally nothing else to back it up. They truly just have an empty checklist to go through, and that's all.
