The problem is that Disney+ was a fundamentally flawed concept and part of the reason why individual streaming services as a whole are in trouble. They saw Netflix and thought "why can't we do that ourselves?"
But they got the formula backwards. Netflix got big off a diverse library and a few incredibly high quality original shows. They only started flooding the platform with Netflix Originals AFTER making it big and getting the revenue to fund it. Disney+ went straight to flooding the market with sub-par content and their library just too limited on its own.

True but Disney already had massive brand recognition. I don’t know if comparing it to Netflix is apples to apples. I think it’s more to do with the marvel formula (and Star Wars) running dry because the new characters don’t have years of investment to fall back on

    • @TheStephaneAdam
      @TheStephaneAdam Před 7 měsíci

@@simbolicdunksman1746 It's not the years of investment per se, although it doesn't help. It's that the new characters are set up as fantasy people having fantasy people problems.
Look at the first phase. Thor was a fantasy family drama not too far the kind of thing you'd see in Game of Thrones, with Loki as this chaotic anti-villain who kept making mistakes on trying to correct his previous grievous mistakes and going more and more insane. Tony Stark was a brilliant invenor and billionaire who became a superhero once he was forced out of his bubble to see how much of a negative impact his company had on the world. Captain America? WWII-era kid who became an heroic icon just trying to do the right thing.
      Simple. Human. Relatable.
Now it's all legacy characters and multiverses and people who went through soooo much weird shit no human can comprehend. There's nothing for an audience to grab onto.

Personally I think that just as the people from Midnight's Edge said, it seems like the streaming wars are just another format wars, but worse. Before there were the wars between VHS and Betamax, DVD vs BluRay and usually the jist was that people could choose a better but more expensive format vs the cheaper but worse alternative, with the plain leveling with digital releases from iTunes or Amazon. However, Netflix was never a true competitor to companies like Blockbuster (at least not on their internet streaming service) but instead it was a competitor to pirate sites and illegal downloads. Sure, Netflix was somewhat inconvenient when it came to their catalogue, but there was no downside on having to scan constantly the downloaded files or websites for viruses.
After Netflix consolidated as the main streaming site, it arguably became a loss leader format that Hollywood would never be able to keep up as profitable as the old physical release model, but at least it was reliably making money (even if it was way less).
Ever since Disney decided to go balls deep in the streaming industry it signed their own death warrant and Hollywood's as well since the industry would unavoidably go from massive profits to huge losses. The pandemic only blinded them on a false sense of confidence in which they gambled the whole farm and unsurprisingly once things went back to normal all started to fall apart.
Nowadays the lack of perspective from the losers at the accounting and innovation departments of these huge corporations have made it so that there is no good way to enjoy content without using pirate stuff. I mean, just look at CZcams. The premium app only allows downloaded content to be viewed if there is an internet connection, rendering the function completely worthless. Netflix for some reason has games even though most gamers have a dedicated console which in turn not only has great releases but things like game pass makes this service even less useful.
In the end, it always is a distribution problem, not a pricing one. If these companies were keen on distributing their contents in more than just one way (streaming) and instead allowed more people to buy just the content that they want, they will not end up the way Blockbuster did.

    • @lorinkramerone
      @lorinkramerone Před 7 měsíci +15

As a parent of small children, you couldn't be more wrong about them not having the content to back up a platform. Pulling all their content off other platforms and putting it on their own was a gold mine. Making new content exclusively to draw more interest? That was a waste. Considering they bought Hulu the same year, though, they should've just put all their content on Hulu which already had a huge market share, or maybe pulled a "Max" and rebranded Hulu.

the worst part is, i watched Wandavision and even i am confused why she is a Villain, like wasn't the lesson she learned that she was hurting people to the point that they actually wanted to die?? i'm pretty sure that was why she set them free, she didn't think her powers did them anything but unsurprisingly having people be enslaved in their own mind is fucked up and makes them want to die..
if not for the tiny little end credit scene where she is reading the evil book that i can't remember the name of then i would be completely bewildered, it's so weird that the show as a hole teaches a lesson and shows the character learning that lesson only to then completely 180 in 20 sec during the end credit scene, but even then i thought she would just try to will them into existence or like reanimate some still born babies into becoming those kids or whatever, not try to destroy universes and kill anyone along her path just to get her kids like thats so dumb when previously she stopped as soon as she realised she was hurting people and she didn't want to do that, but now she has no qualms about possibly ending multiverses and all it's inhabitants or to kill their most important heroes which will undoubtedly cost many lives down the line.. it the worst writing i have seen in a long while, worse than Luke suddenly being a gremling that would kill his own nephew cause of a freaking vision which he should know is really unreliable.

It's funny, the problem of too many characters/plotlines is the exact same problem comic books have had for decades. I remember years ago when Spider Island came out, it looked super cool so I decided to read it. Then I discovered that the actual main issues in The Amazing Spiderman only told a fraction of the story, and I'd need to read issues from TEN other series to get the complete picture. It's like this for every major comic book event, both in DC and Marvel. And that's why both companies usually do full-on universe reboots every decade or so. Things get so convoluted that casual readers who otherwise might have been interested give up on the prospect, simply because they have no idea where to start.

Nah, story concepts can get tiring to individuals (and over time, entire communities of aforementioned individuals). I speak from experience as somebody that is absolutely tired of any and all western style shows and crime drama shows. The formula absolutely does get tiring.
Obviously, a new take on it can shake things up a bit, but it won't renew any REAL interest in the genre as a whole, just in that one production that shook things up. For example, I'm burnt out as hell on crime drama shows (think CSI, Law and Order, etc). If a show came along that twisted the formula a bit, made things feel a little fresh, it might catch my interest for a few seasons, but it would absolutely not make me suddenly like crime drama as a whole again.

When Disney makes movies or TV-Shows that cost like, 400 million, and then they get confused why they don't earn that back by any significant margin... I mean, like... What do Disney think? "Oh the more money we spend on producing a movie or TV-Show, the more money it will make in return."? There are movies and TV-Shows out there that has 30-40 times less of a budget, and is STILL better written than what Disney is producing. I honestly hope that now that the writer's strike is over, and Disney seemingly going for improvements to their overall shows or movie production, hiring showrunners and more experienced writers etc. I hope their shows will get a lot better from this. But that might not solve Disney's immediate problem in regards to having lost the faith of their fanbase. Fans of Marvel believe they have gotten Superhero fatigue, when in reality they are just tired of being given bad shows. Fans of Star Wars are disappointed with shows like Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi, whilst genuine masterpieces such as Andor isn't earning what it deserve for how good it is. Not to mention that Disney lost the faith of many Star Wars fans because of the horrendous Sequel trilogy. If this continues, Disney will be in genuine trouble.

I feel like Loki as a show is a good example of the "tired of bad writing" theory in that the thing that carries that show (assuming you like it) isn't really Loki himself, is that it's an interesting and not very well trodden concept in modern media. It helps that Loki and the characters in the show are definitely some of the more appealing Marvel characters in their own right's but it's the concept and the writing that drives it. You could pretty much just take Loki out of it and replace him with an unknown character and the show would still work because aside from the Kang stuff, it's not really associating itself with the wider Marvel universe at this point so it's not constantly undermining it's own potential and writing itself into a corner trying to connect up with the many dangling threads of the MCU.

Maybe you think these two aren't connected but it's hardly unreasonable to think they are. Certainly the trend of having unlikable Strong Female Characters basically steal the show from / dump on the male characters, is a big contributor. ALL they had to do was introduce relatable and genuine characters to embody the "wokeness."
Like The Eternals where its only canonically gay character was shown as a father and a family man who wanted nothing to do with the bullshit happening in the plot because he just wanted to protect and live with his family. This character was genuine and relatable. There was no widespread backlash over this character because it was done nicely and his sexual orientation didn't much matter. Not that it did the film any good because its plot's scope was too big.
Now people are shitting over Disney because they are introducing characters whose only noticeable characteristic is being "woke" or queer. But nearing the end of the video you also acknowledged that the faults of bad schedules and CGI seem to come from a place higher than the creative teams and directors, isn't that where Kevin is? You also brought up the insane amount of reshoots, some ordered by the man himself. It's almost hypocritical as if you're fine with wasting money, talents getting fired and taking another risk as long as he's the one supervisor, but is that not the same case with all the other failed projects?

It sort of feels for Marvel they need a Head Showrunner liek a Kevin Feigie and then he needs to select traditional show runners for each show running the projects according to Kevin's overall vision for the MCU.

I'm gonna be honest, I think you're giving Moon Knight more credit than it deserves. It certainly had some great episodes but it's genuinely hilarious how short the series was and how little time we actually saw the costume. That kaiju finale with US NOT EVEN SEEING THE VILLAIN DEFEATED, is a joke, and not a good one

Wait wait wait… Daredevil had actual legal drama over She-Hulk?! Why couldn’t they be bothered to show some of that in her show? It’s not like she did anything with her green skin power either.

The old saying “in a galaxy far far away.” Doesn’t seem far away anymore, it feels more like one planet with Disney’s over reliance on bringing back prequal/og era legacy characters and having them constantly meet each other to the point that it’s getting weird.

About lightsaber duels....I mean... Disney already showed they kinda suck with lightsaber duels in movies with the sequels ( except TLJ in that regard, however tehnically there is no lightsaber duel per se in that movie )
I would put Baylan vs Ahsoka far above any duel from the sequels.

    Disney+ is a D&D of franchises:
Star Wars - most recognized and probably most succesful franchise in the world downgraded to a D+ category
MCU - phase 4 of m-she-u with mediocre D+ shows needed to watch movies making their movies flop really hard. On the other hand theatrical releases suck as well.

Love the point someone made about pilot episodes being crucial to success and good business for the same reason that parallel testing is bad ethically.
If you make a whole show with no stops to quality test it as you go, then f it starts out bad, it will probably end bad. Just like if you do multiple tests of a drug in tandem and it has dangerous results for the testers, you're condemning everyone testing to that same result in a way that was completely avoidable.

Why not try to hire the actors for Daredevil that starred in the original series and try to hire also the screenwriters that worked on that specific show. Its like Disney is trying to reinvent the wheel in some ways. Also the idea that they can work in tv environment withouth showrunners just seems like something that you wouldnt expect from Disney in general. You need one person with overall control and vision of the series since otherwise it can become just chaos of trying to produce a certain amount of episodes. Also what is wrong in people wishing to have more of the legacy characters in Star Wars? It would be amazing to see Lukes adventures as a master jedi or to watch what happens to Han Solo. Why do we need all new characters when we could also have some more adventures with the characters that we fell in love originally. But Disneys main problem is that they have a streaming platform for which they need to produce content constantly or lose potentially a lot of subscribers. This is probably why the quality has dipped partly since instead of selling their tv series to other streaming services they have to now try to produce enought content for their own streaming service.

I mostly use Disney+ because of the large library of older content (that I hope won’t be removed for cutting costs as well). With that said, we should expect more quality from a streaming service brought to us by a company that has several of the most talented and groundbreaking production companies in the history of film.

The other thing is they don't put their content on other services. You don't see marvel or Disney on Netflix or Prime. So if you don't have Disney streaming you just forget all about it. If i watched Infinity War on Hulu, it might make we watch Age of Ultron or Civil War. But as it stands, i haven't seen any of the marvel or disney universe in 4 years.
