Is This Somalia? Kenya's Unknown Somali State đžđŽđ°đȘ (#71)
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 18. 08. 2021
- It was time for a journey to Garissa, Kenya's border with Somalia. Starting in Eastleigh, the famous "Little Somalia" of Nairobi, I found a bus that would make the 7 hour journey to the northeast. Kenyans had told me that Garissa was dangerous, that there was terrorism, that I could be kidnapped. It was hard to tell fact from fiction, but I was dead set on meeting the Somalis of Kenya.

Although Garissa is predominantly a Muslim town it has a very large population of Non-Muslims from other parts of Kenya. Majority are the Kamba people who boader Somalis to the south but also Kikuyus and other Kenyan tribes. Because of that Garissa isn't your typical Somali town somewhere in Somalia where things like Bars and drinking alcohol are prohibited. My dad is a Teacher in Garissa and everytime I visit him I must go out drinking with friends and come home late at night (haven't been there since Corona though). It also has many Churches and actually most good private schools are owned by Churches and Kenyan Somalis don't have a problem taking their kids there.

I'm always envious of you...."hear it spoken, one time....remember it forever", type of people...lol. When it comes to language/linguistics, I'm in the percentile where I need multiple repetitions, uses & practical application(s), to retain anything that I've "learned". In short,....I'm one of those folks who find it *EXTREMELY DIFFICULT* to pick up anything beyond common, every day phrases/salutations, in *any* language. Baldandbankrupt is another guy who can retain many words/phrases/languages with just one or two times hearing it spoken.
