Is This Somalia? Kenya's Unknown Somali State 🇾🇮🇰đŸ‡Ș (#71)

  • It was time for a journey to Garissa, Kenya's border with Somalia. Starting in Eastleigh, the famous "Little Somalia" of Nairobi, I found a bus that would make the 7 hour journey to the northeast. Kenyans had told me that Garissa was dangerous, that there was terrorism, that I could be kidnapped. It was hard to tell fact from fiction, but I was dead set on meeting the Somalis of Kenya.

Although Garissa is predominantly a Muslim town it has a very large population of Non-Muslims from other parts of Kenya. Majority are the Kamba people who boader Somalis to the south but also Kikuyus and other Kenyan tribes. Because of that Garissa isn't your typical Somali town somewhere in Somalia where things like Bars and drinking alcohol are prohibited. My dad is a Teacher in Garissa and everytime I visit him I must go out drinking with friends and come home late at night (haven't been there since Corona though). @@mwangigitau286 what you said is exactly the Truth. I'm from wajir 300km beyond Garissa and is exactly the same way you described Garissa. We live with Christians side by side and their is a lot of churches and bars. The most important thing is everybody should mind his own business and people respect each other.

I'm always envious of you...."hear it spoken, one time....remember it forever", type of people...lol. When it comes to language/linguistics, I'm in the percentile where I need multiple repetitions, uses & practical application(s), to retain anything that I've "learned". In short,....I'm one of those folks who find it *EXTREMELY DIFFICULT* to pick up anything beyond common, every day phrases/salutations, in *any* language. Baldandbankrupt is another guy who can retain many words/phrases/languages with just one or two times hearing it spoken.

Hey man, been thoroughly enjoying binge watching your videos for the last week and a half or so. Watching your videos where you get yourself into weird situations, seeing such beautiful sights, and meeting some awesome people over time really inspires me to figure out a way to get out there and start travelling. Africa wouldn't be high up on the list immediately but after seeing your videos, I certainly want to visit it some day. First off would be something "simple", basically any of the major cities that aren't my tiny home town haha. I hope you're doing well man. Stay safe out there.

@@jakobjama4612 yes and trust me bro our Cushitic family still exists today all over Africa but most of them now are assimilated and speak different languages. Even in kenya you have kikuyus, Maasai and kalenjin all have cush blood. And in uganda the bahima clans from bayankole look cushitic, they are dark and tall with long noses and have cows.

Hope you’ve enjoyed your stay in Garissa. Just to state some facts, in 2010 the town (my hometown) was the safest town in East and Central Africa described by the international police and with so many delegations from across the continent ventured Garissa to get and share experience. Despite the challenges mostly experienced after the KDF invaded Somalia. Now it’s peace and calm once again. Hoping we regain our title once again and this time be a model to the whole continent

Tommy seems to like traveling and learning new languages from an early age, he even speaks Mandarin, quite fluently. I don't see anything wrong about him, on the contrary, he seems very happy with his life, hence his passion for new languages. Look up his early videos on this channel, always interested in learning some new words. When you're troubled, believe me, the last thing you want is to learn some dialect of a tribe.
