CNC certainly needs more of the hobby level innovation that 3D printers enjoy. Same with laser engraving.
Sadly much, much harder as physics is working against you there (especially when manufacturing metals).
You need:
-rigidity which automatically means much larger and thicker frame components (reduced number of bolted joints, as well as a
-precision (the better the linear components the more precise the mounting surface has to be) and the larger the machine the harder it is to hit said precision
-actual damping (which can only really be done by drastically increase mass, tho there are some design principle that help, but they are not anywhere close to increasing mass)
All this results in massively increased cost on all components and tooling (you think the Voron 2.4 is expensive and its a fairly high end machine, meanwhile thats barely entry level price for an acceptable CNC mill/router).
Of course there are relatively cheap solutions with acceptable results (for a router) out there like the PrintNC which is a great start if you are trying to get into entry level router work (it can even do Aluminum acceptably for what it is).
To boot its also designed to be built with just a 3d printer, saw and drill.
For the price of a decent 3d printer you can get a nice 40w co2 laser that will run using lightburn.

I’ve been circulating around the Milo for a few months now, should be an absolutely great series for Nero. Ive been thinking of porting grblHAL on a btt octopus, seems like a great product for hobbyists.
Probing is one of the areas where there's a big jump between 3d printing and CNC.

Well I know my project for this year! This looks awesome! Maybe I can even get my boss to fund it at work since we have a lot of things we can machine for ourselves instead of purchasing.

Hey @Nero 3D I ve been keeping up with your Milo 1.5 build and I was wondering if when you build your Milo CNC if you can show how to install and run Remora for Linux CNC the interface that was showed in your video. I've already downloaded the Remora raspberry pi 4 image since I have a Raspberry pi 4 laying around but since I'm going to be building one soon and I'm going to be self sourcing I'm trying to make sure I understand how to install the firmware. I see he's using a fysect spider for his MCU, do you happen to know if you would be able to install the CNC firmware using a Octopus 1.1 board? Looking forward to seeing the rest of your build take care
which version of linux cnc is this?
I'm curious what the advantage of this is over a generic 4030 or 6040 kit with grbl? Is it just trying to use more stuff familiar from people from 3d printing? I just got a 4030, and am trying to figure it out but the most daunting part is the cam, not the mechanics or firmware.
It's a mini-mill.
4030 / 6040 are routers. Not the same.
Also LinuxCNC is way more flexible.
If it was a completed kit (spindle and all) per spec so I could upgrade Id go for it.. but Id screw something up
Well there are plenty of screws in the kit so I'd hope you screw a lot

What are the estimated costs?
I'm not allowed to say what the LDO kit prices are yet but I can tell you that self sourced is about 1000 to 1500 GBP, however I would wait a few weeks and maybe you'll get a much better price wink wink nudge nudge

"LDO is working on a kit" - wow. What about a Voron CNC that was kind of "announced" on some earlier festival, still in the works, with 2024 release?
I mean half the voron team came over to our booth to talk about the machine and they all said they're weren't working on anything CNC, Steve and Nero both said they were looking at building milo.

Hmm i’d rather buy a small desktop mill and convert it to CNC that thing will beat the sh** out of this. But still a interesting option for i guess very cheap?

Yeah just a regular 3 axis mill with a small working volume
@@hd-be7di Plenty big deal considering you can bootstrap it without any machined parts. Brings the price right down. Also for those that have never built a cnc from scratch it gives a fairly step by step approach with help from the community. Also requires no scraping, lapping using a calibrated surface plate. I hope to build one by next year, and plan to cast an epoxy granite frame into the aluminium. The only competition would be pre-builts from Taig in the US or proxxon (cheap non-cnc mill) in europe. but building your own machine has its advantages from a learning perspective. I hope to build fully custom machines in the future and consider projects like this to be a great stepping stone (after I'm done with the voron) for someone without a formal engineering background or a space for a workshop.
Just a basic 3 axis mill nothing special 2bh but nice to have open machines... maybe a 5 axis mill would be more interesting
