Outside of one champion per division, the significance of holding the title of "champion" is diminished a bit. It just is, by default. Having 4 champs per division is absurd when you think about it.

In a single weight class with a single sanctioning body you can have a world champion, super champion or franchise champion, an interim champion, and a champion in-recess. Not to mention the countless silver, ic, and continental straps. It’s a joke!

I call anyone who isn't the lineal champion of the division a "titlist". Occasionally the lineal champ isn't the real champ, or at least there is some dispute, which is where the real quality super fights happen between two champions in the same division. But this modern era of boxing is so bad, I'm worried that in 10 years, it won't even exist

Nobody loss the energy but the notable difference is Charlo moved out of the weight class… plus he had the belt much longer than 3 months. Crawford has a mandatory in from of him that he was obligated even before getting the belt. I say all this, knowing your emotions will prevent you from seeing clear logic but it’s the truth.

The difference in energy is this: Bud was a unified champ coming off a win over the next best fighter in the division, also a legit p4p fighter. Charlo is coming off a loss 2 divisions up and he looked like $hit in that fight. It’s easier to get energized about Bud because he’s an atg and future HOF-er. Charlo is not. One belt is enough, since too many belts can be expensive. The champ has to pay each organization substantial amount of money for each of those belts.

The sad thing about Tony and Ruddick is that if you asked them right now, they would both say that they were every bit as fast and as good today as they were in their prime. They are so damaged that they really believe that. It's not just them either. A lot of old fighters think that way.

I have to disagree with the older guys fighting. Guys like James Toney were incredible champions. They’ve earns the right to dictate when they should and shouldn’t fight as past champions. I don’t think we can watch them sacrifice so much as young men and then dictate when they should leave the ring as retired champions. Of course the monetising of the situation is incredibly grubby (and unfortunately unsurprising). Let them have their autonomy. They may be fighters till the end. Don’t avert your eyes when it becomes uncomfortable. Watch till the end, they love it.

The WBC awarded Ken Norton with the title when Leon Spinks decided to fight rematch with Muhammad Ali instead of fighting Norton. The WBC award Lennox Lewis the title when Riddick Bowe decided to make a couple of defenses and rematch Evander Holyfield.
I kind of always viewed Norton fight against Young as his title victory.

Toney is still sparring, he seems unable to quit. It looked like these two guys were honored and No one around the ring was screaming for blood, so this exhibition looked ok. Holyfield in a real fight 2 years ago was not.

Really enjoyed this one guys. Great points about this sport I love. I grew up in the 1970's, 80's & 90's so I recall those great nights in the sport. Unfortunately those great night have come now too far and between. It's a real shame hat guys like Mike Tyson, Roy Jones Jr but especially James Toney and Razor Ruddock to have to fight at their age with them being so far away from even half decent shape.
So with all that u said in mind guys I have a question.
Q. Why is it that a great fighter like JAMES TONEY is not involved in the sport as a trainer or some form of coaching bcos he was one of the very best I ever saw lace up a pair of gloves. When u watch this guy slipping punches the way he did the sport needs his input to help so many young guys coming in. Why don't the Olympic bodies ask for this guys help in training young kids in the art of defensive fighting?
My favourite middleweight but really my fav fighter at that time was Michael Nunn. He got stopped on that great night when TONEY knocked him out and after his won the NABF title on his return he disappeared from the sport.
I didn't know what happened to the man until finding out last year he'd been released from prison after serving 20 odd years.
Michael Nunn is involved in the sport teaching young fighters now so why isn't a top guy like James Toney doing the same?
There isn't one of u top men can tell me TONEY has nothing to offer. I respect all ur opinions but u can't tell me James Toney cannot train young guys coming into this tough as hell sport. He should be working with young fighters teaching them the value of defensive fighting while also showing them u can be great by not getting hit and still making a big name in the sport.
The IBF doesn't recognize rematch clauses and Crawford is stuck to the contract with Spence. The question is why is the IBF operating differently from the other boxing organizations?? Why?? Who the hell does the ibf think they are??

Which made Ennis the number one if he wanted to he could have pushed for being the mandatory if he wasn't automatically put there. The bottom line is he didn't push to be Crawford's next fight... What Ennis wanted was the Title. And if he could get it without fighting Crawford he was happy like he is right DAMN NOW. And happy as a pig in slob that he's a champion regardless of the fact that he had to fight nobody to be in that position that is not a champion that is a Belt holder.

I disagree with the take on Ennis and Tim Tszyu. Although I don't think Crawford should be stripped. But Jermell definitely deserved it. Ennis and Tszyu both were interim champs. That's why they have been elevated. That's been a thing in boxing for a long time and I don't see anything wrong with it. They earned it by becoming the interim champs. If it was a vacant belt, they might have had some low level fighters fighting for it. Like the wba did with Rolly. Id prefer it go to the next guy in line then a bottom tier fighter.

They are letting Charlo slide for what he had to deal with When he was Canelo's mandatory at 160 for like 2 years & instead of giving Charlo the fight they just gave Charlo the WBC title & made Canelo the WBC franchise so he had no mandatory anymore! Now they are just making up for it with Charlo
Per rules no fighter can be stripped if they suffered an injury or illness.
Jermall wasn't stripped due to mental health which falls under illness.

Champions who refuse to fight their mandatories is what hurts boxing.
The only way a fighter becomes an email champ is due to the current champion refusing to fight their mandatories. That's literally the only way.

Here's my question, with all these boxer active and retired, why was there never a union for boxers. Union reps who can lobby, protect and contract for the boxers beyond just the fight contract agreement. Those important things that involves more of the boxing politics and other decisions that would benefit the boxers and be a fair decision. Union reps that can make sure there's a balance between management, organizations and boxers which affects the sport on all levels?

I love the show guys you all made some great points and even though it feels like a losing battle continue to fight the good fight. This just isn’t true. Crawford accepted fights with little preparation time. Unlike Boots and Spence, he wasn't a marquee name straight out of the amateur scene. He never gained a title simply by promotion; he earned his place by climbing the ranking system the hard way. He never got a random chance to fight for a title.

Boxing is the only sport I keep up with as much as possible at one time I watch and played football, baseball, basketball, wrestling and Boxing now it’s just boxing but all the talk is exhausting
