- Old German Relics - A Spin off to the Swedish version "Old Swedish Relics", is a series of Historic rally videos dedicated to praising the car manufactures of a certain country - This time cars from Germany.
In this 17-minute-long video, there are all kinds of old historic german cars, such as the Volkswagen Beetle, Opel Kadett, Ascona, Porsche, and Audi Quattro amongst others. If you are a fan of 30+-year-old German cars, this is a video for you. Just historic cars competing in the Appendix K rally class, for cars aged 30 and older.
These old rally cars still put up a good show in the Swedish rallye forests sometimes, inviting to wide lines and occasionally pushing their car over the limit and ending up beside the road, or on the roof. But mostly, they just compete for the fun, driving an old and historic car on narrow gravel roads in Sweden is a pleasure to many. Sometimes it might not go fast, or wide, or be spectactular, but the sight of these old cars still sparks joy in the spectators, who are there to watch the race unfold in front of their eyes.
So sit back and enjoy these plenty sequences of cars from the past, when cars still had an unique shape and were built differently, without computers and without all the electronic controls that new cars have and rely on. These cars were meant to drive, not to ride, and every single one had that unique thing that identified them. This is pure classic rally, but in a modern world where the rally cars mostly have more power, and are built way differently. These are just here for the fun, enjoying every single bit of the gravel race tracks.

I must be getting old, Asconas, Mantas and Quattros are only yesterday to me, as for the Beetles and Kadett GTEs, well that's just the day before yesterday! Happy days and memories, thanks for sharing.👍

Being an "American" I have always had an attraction to the European and Scandinavian cars. I have owned cars from every country with the exception of England and Russia.

@@christopherbrown6697 Correct. Still probably forgot about Polish, Romanian, or Russian cars.
Interestingly, Polish cars even beat American twice in motorsport. Once in long-distance speed record, and once we won with Jeeps in Press On Regardless rally in USA in 1973. Comments were that Jeeps would win, and Polskies would not finish the rally. Turned out all Polskies finished the rally, one on 6th place overall, and none of the Jeeps managed to get to the finish line xD.

I love the VW Type 3.

The type 1 VW's seem to handle very well. The Porsche always flip around backwards.
It is pretty good, especially considering it was designed in the prime time of Hitler.
It makes sense. Early 912s handled better than their contemporary 911s because the 4 cylinder meant less weight behind the rear axle. Beetles have a longer wheelbase than 911s as well.
All of the Type 1s are 1302 and 1303 (Super Beetles) so the strut front ends and CV IRS rear ends are more late 1960s tech versus the old torsion beam/swingaxle Type 1s developed in the late 1930s.

My daily driver is a 1990 Volvo 240DL estate that Ma bought new. Arthur is not, never had been, nor ever will be. He is an old car that is happiest when working hard. The old boy has regularly taken dirt and gravel roads for fun. With the stock, and mostly original, underpinnings. Upgraded shocks, struts, and tyres are the only upgrade. Pamper the old boy and he sulks. Drive him like you stole him, or are in a Rally, and he is happy as Larry.
So Opel is the ONLY OLD GERMAN RELIC WITH A DIFFERENT EXHAUST SOUND?
The 911s and the Audi I-5s sounded a bit different, but yes, remarkably similar across the board.

the Kadett/Astra is made in liverpool, don’t think that’s germany
The Kadett C is made in Bochum, Germany, according to the information I found about this car.
And the Kadett E (not Astra) is made in different countries, including Germany, Belgium, Portugal, UK & Spain.
Kadett was always German. GM just rebadged Opels to Vauxhall when they shut down British engineering centres and limited British division to interior finish design department.
British Vauxhall Chevette isn't exactly British either. It's a modified Chevrolet Chevette/Pontiac 1000.
Speaking of production alone, lots of Astras have been made in Poland as well. Does that make them Polish?

Over 8 minutes in and not a Volvo or Saab in sight. I know the 240 series did quite well, so considering that this is SwedishRally, the dearth of Swedish cars is doubly sad.
