I have only seen bad situations when only a woman comes in with children. Only cases that I saw being positive were blended families where both man and woman already have children, both have no wish for more, and at least half of the children are already mature.

One of the last incidents in our relationship was when her daughter was being a little brat in school. The teacher called and explained that she was involved in an incident with another girl and was being disrespectful to the teacher. I went to the school to pick her up and on the way home, in the car, I got a little stern with her. I was angry and disappointed and I raised my voice at her. I didn't think I was out of line because she needed to learn some things. When we got home her mom was furious with me. She explained clearly that it was not my place and that disciplining her was between her and her ex. After that, it went downhill. I just felt like I had all the responsibilities of a real father but none of the benefits. Her daughter and her mom would never see me as her real father. At most, I could be the fun uncle but still had to take care and pay for both of them. I am sure there are situations where this arrangement can work but for me, it didn't. I just didn't see the point of it. I decided to end it and look for someone I could start my own family with.
