- A correction to my first video on the Epiphone Texan. This one is the Inspired by Texan, not the Masterbilt. That explains quite a lot to me. Please read the description of the first video I did on this and you will understand why I did a second video.

Well done Randy. We have all made some errors in our lifetime. Cudos to you sir for stepping up and sharing your error with others in order to maybe prevent them from making the same mistake. Even though some of us knew something seemed off, you were the one who knew that guitar had something wrong with it. Your videos are always educating as well as entertaining. I'm always looking forward to your next one.
Hi Terry, perhaps one of the kindest comments I’ve gotten, kind sir. Thank you very much for the encouragement 👍🏻
Hi Randy! Great sense of humor! God bless you and your family too!
Hi Ms Laurie!! We've lost touch a bit, haven't we? Sorry about that, ma'am. Afraid that's on me. Travel has been extensive lately and it has caused me to overlook some things, such as why we are on the planet - other people 😁. I really appreciate the well wishes and the comment in general. You're a dear 👍
@@randysrhythm Awe no need for apologies! I miss a lot too but happened to catch you in my feed and wanted to stop in. Glad you're well!!!
Mate I’ve been in abit of a rut/couldn’t be bothered with my guitars the last month, probably due to getting married and the chaos surrounding it but i found your channel yesterday and I listened to your reviews while working and a funny thing happened.
I went home and I picked up my frontier and I could not stop playing the bugger! Ain’t it funny how it works?
Keep going with the videos brother as they are very enjoyable! Killer playing too my mate, Liam
Congratulations on the marriage! I’ve been married 46 years now and I wouldn’t trade that girl for anything. The Frontier is on my list of guitars to get at some point. I’m really pleased that you’ve picked yours back up again. That’s a great story on both counts and it makes me smile, brother man 👍🏻
May not be a Texan but you make it sound great.
Quit it, you'll make me blush 😊. You're too kind, Ms Lynn. A great day when I connected with you. Thank you ma''am 👍
Refreshing to hear an honest 😌 no bull.. review. Funny 😁 too.

Hey Bruce, great appreciate the very kind words. I don't think there's enough humor anymore, so glad you like it. My wife has heard all of my jokes, so I really needed to find a new audience! Thanks for the sub, brother man and I hope you find the channel both encouraging and helpful. Welcome aboard, brother man 👍
Very good and honest review.
Appreciate that, G’man 👍🏻
You are a stand up guy Randy.
To your defense, with the many makers and models flooding the guitar world, it is hard to keep up with it all.
Hi Unc, I just keep getting reminded that no matter how old you get, you should always do your due diligence! I know better than this, so it’ll be a while before I quit kicking myself. Your encouraging words do help though 👍🏻
Brother Randy, you are spot on once again, this ‘Texan’ name has been exploited a bit recently. I suspect the one I played in my local shop was of the same ilk as yours. I’ve not seen or tried a Masterbilt, but I don’t think I’ll bother.
So, for anyone who wants to know what a REAL Epiphone Texan sounds like, listen to Peter Frampton play Baby, I Love Your Way. He wrote all of his acoustic hits on his 64 Texan
Always a pleasure, my friend!
Hey there brother man Paul! Much appreciate the additional insights. If I ever see a Masterbilt in person, I'll try it, but you can bet that I'll not order that one online 😀. Great to see your smiling face, my friend 👍
Howdy Randy . . . . . we all live and learn Mate . . . . well hopefully. 🙏 🤷🏻♂ 🙄 Nice upload Randy! 👍🏻
Truer words were never spoken, my friend. 3 versions of the same guitar, who knew? Well sir, we all know now 😂. Hope all is well, brother man 👍🏻
i have a 69 and the weird thing about it is that the previous owner played it "fretless", he has filed the frets flat. when i got it (at a bargain price cos is was fkd up) the neck was bent and the finished was badly hand painted varnish. the good news is i got the neck straightened out and a refret, and the hand applied varnish (complete with brush strokes) all were remedied.
what i find odd though is the finish on the back and sides is completely different - i have a 66 J45 an the woods all match up, the texan though looks like different woodstock was used for the sides from the back, and even a different spray, the back doesn't look filled properly whereas the side are similar to my j45 - really odd. it's turned out to be a great guitar though, and a fraction of what a 60's texan should cost.
lol, what i meant to say though after all that rmbling, epiphone texans come in too many variations to keep track of, most of the 60's ones are in japan for some reason, they were made in japan, but the sought after ones were made in kalamazoo i believe, but there is the actual 60's models, there are reissues, there are "inspired by" and there are "masterbuilt" and even peter frampton as well asthe mccartney models, and i've probably missed something - crazy. it's why it took me 40 years to get a martin, i have no clue (by name alone) of what i'm buying.
Hi Harry, well sir, you may have no clue, but it sounds like you landed one heck of a Texan! At least you understand why I was so frustrated in my efforts to find one. I’ve since sold this one and the new owner played it before he bought it and I told him before he handed me the cash how much I despised that guitar. So, he knew exactly what he was getting, but wanted it anyway. I simply couldn’t sell it to someone that hadn’t played it first. Glad you came to the channel and glad you shared your experience/thoughts, brother man 👍🏻
It has a solid top and solid back and laminated sides. They were around €300 when they were out. I have an antique natural one.
Thank you, sir. Apparently they built a few versions of this, or they made them at more than one factory. Appreciate the insights on this, very much 👍🏻
Beautiful guitar, I found a pre Gibson Epiphone Texan 12 string years ago. I wish I’d kept it. But I say that about 60 guitars. 😂. Take care my friend!
This was beautiful, but sounded like crap 😂. Great to hear from you, brother man. Now go sing us a song, you talented son of a gun 👍🏻
Randy I am so sorry for the POC. I actually ordered a Texan Masterbilt, the lower tier made in Indonesia. Yes, thank you for mentioning me Randy. I know I love mine, and despite being over geared now with mine, plus a Taylor 210e, and the new Epiphone Hummingbird, it is a Masterbilt Texan. I will never, ever part with my Texan any sooner than given up my birth as a Texan lol.
I continue to love and learn from your videos Randy: Respect.
Yes sir, you are the first person I thought of when I was finally cleared up on this mess. I said, AH!!!, this explains why David loves his - IT ISN"T AN INSPIRED BY TEXAN, it's actually a Masterbilt from the custom shop in Indonesia. I hate expensive lessons, how about you? Thanks brother man and the new IBG Hummingbird you have is just killer 👍
@@randysrhythm that is why I wondered why you did not love yours too lol. It certainly explains things.
I'm looking at a used Peter Frampton Texan but the sticker inside the sound hole says Nashville, TN. It has high gloss but appears all solid wood. Its priced at 820. It plays and sounds great but I'm confused by the different models. Is the Peter Frampton model Texan made in USA? I so appreciate this video as I want to be careful buying a new guitar. Thanks
Hi DL, the Nashville verbiage is where it was engineered and spec’d. This was possibly made in Korea. It’s all solid wood, which is why you like it so much. If you played it and happy with it, then I say you should purchase it. The serial number throws me a bit, because none of the factory codes are in it. To me, that’s unusual. However, the Frampton model seems to have great reviews. I’m pretty sure this one you are looking at is not a USA made, particularly at that price.
I checked both the old and the new Epi Wiki page , the old one list started production in 06 and the new page list that they discontinued them in 2019. Solid Top Solid Back ,,, Mahogany sides. This is code for plywood sides !
Hey Terry, as we were texting, what a snow job on the fans of Epiphone. It'll take me while to get over this nonsense, but I will 😂. Appreciate you doing some research there, brother man 👍
Hello Randy nice video hip hip!!!
Thanks Charlie 👍🏻
Perfect....
Yep, I was researching this and that is not an Indonesian made Epiphone, that one was made in China. Not that all guitars from China are bad, because they aren't, look at my Recording King and my Alvarez, but that one wasn't made in Indonesia.
The Texan I know and discussed, in length, in my video ( with specs) was the Masterbuilt series Texan. The guitar that you have is a cheap Chinese knockoff.
When you told me the price, Epiphone hard case included, I knew it wasn't, or couldn't be the Masterbuilt.
I was watching this video and another thing popped up that the Masterbuilt Texan has different, the finish on the Masterbuilt is a matt/worn or older look, not a high gloss finish. I noticed your studio lights just glaring off of the guitar, in this video, several times. The Masterbuilt one wouldn't have a high gloss finish and wouldn't have reflected the studio lights like this one does.
Another long comment ..lol... sorry my friend. But you know me, I love my Texan and have a soft spot for all of them. Thanks for everything you do and for our friendship. And Take care.....
Don’t you give a long comment a thought, as this one was packed with useful information. I very much appreciate the detailed response. I think it will help others. I did the one thing that I tell others not to do - ass u me! Always appreciate you brother man 👍🏻
That is not a real serial number and your example is fake. I have the real Inspired by Texan. The serial number is not even close. Plus yours has wonky bracing. Mine looks great.
@@SquierBulletBass-sj5bg
Had to edit my comment. Yes, his was a real example and his had a real serial number. There are several variants, or models in the "Texan" line up. Some are way better than others. Bottom line is this though, if you like your guitar, than it's the one for you. And sorry Randy, I got a notification of this responce, and thought it was the video I made. Should have have looked closer before responding. CZcams really needs to fix the way it notifies of replies... Lol..
What is the serial number? I recently looked up an acoustic Epi using the number and found the year and country it was produced in. I just googled and found a website. It was NOT on the Epiphone website...
Hey brother man, great to hear from you! The serial number is in the video. I put a picture up of the label at the 5:45 mark. Always appreciate the help and insights, brother D jr 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm I realized that after I commented and was going to delete my comment but thought someone else may benefit from it... 🙂
Out of curiosity. I checked Reverb. Found 2 inspired by Texan Epiphone’ guitars for sale! What is strange is Looking at the photos on the Reverb listing’s I could not see a Label inside either one! Are Sellers pulling the Label’s out? Or Are these still made and the Company Not putting a identifying Label in them? Who really knows where these are really made? I googled where Epiphone guitars are made and it’s a quagmire of various factories for sure. Your doing folks a service pointing this out!
Hi Dennis, they are out there, but not new ones. I think you and I think a lot alike. Yes sir, in my opinion they are deliberately not showing a photo of the soundhole. They are also not being truthful in the specs, or perhaps I should say, not disclosing all the facts, which is simply dishonest. Great feedback, brother man and a pleasure to see you 👍🏻
Useful video, thanks. The "Inspired By..." branding is confusing indeed. I suppose the issue is the used market and aftermarket still have plenty of these older "Inspired By..." models in circulation even if Epiphone have discontinued them. I'm living in China and looking to buy from e-Bay-style sites there, which is a minefield of scams and counterfeits at the best of times without Epiphone themselves making it worse. I saw some going for 200 USD equivalent, and indeed after doing research and finding my way here, it seems they are this Chinese-made version and not the Masterbilt... and quite possibly the Chinese version that failed QC inspection and escaped out of the backdoor... if it seems too good to be true, it often is...
Hi brother man, I don’t think Steven King could have written this any better! I have since sold this guitar. Now, just so it’s clear, I would not ship that guitar. Because I despised it so much, I insisted that the buyer come and play it. I even told him that I hated that guitar. He came, played it, handed me my asking price and was happy. You nailed it, if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is, brother man 👍🏻
I hope you subscribe to the channel, as I welcome these kinds of commentary!
2nd rate go to China. And please explain what POS means. You made me grin, you need to be more honest, great video 😜😂👍🎸 love the sound of that 😂😂😂😂😂 screwing with you 👍 have a great week 🎶😁
Never a dull moment, right 😂? It means Piece of Sunlight 🤣. Always great to hear from you, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 LMAO 🤣🤣🤣🤣, that's what I thought, appreciate you clearing that up for me 😜😜😜
I have one of these that is built in Indonesia and I do like it. Does it sound like a D18? No… It’s not much for flatpicking..or big throaty open chords? no because again, it’s not D18..nor is it J 45 woody thumper… but what I found that when playing single note songs, the internal reverb is wonderful. I normally don’t like barre chords on an acoustic flattop because it just seems to hem the sound in..but this guitar handles barre chords like an archtop with a cutting swingband kinda cut. (think GIBSON L50) So that is how I approach it. It is the archtop I never bought. I can do my flatpicking on my BREEDLOVE DM and my rhythm accompaniment for vocals on my GIBSON J100 or Martin M16GT…. this EPIPHONE “inspired by 64 Texan” along with my jangly D’jango style guitar are for acoustic jazz. 😊
Hi Barry, sounds like you landed a keeper. You make some fantastic points here. I’m really pleased to hear your experience and perspective. Great comment, brother man 👍🏻
wow
Thanks for the warning the best ones were bought in the sixties Paul McCartnrey had one so it was made popular
Hi Chester, I have a good friend that has one of the original 60’s and he loves that guitar, to your point. You’re very welcome for the warning and I hope to hear more from you on the channel, brother man 👍🏻
Without reading through the comments or finishing the video the inspired by collection was primarily built in China up until a few years back from what I’ve read. It’s called an Inspired By Texan because the Texan is an Epiphone product originally not Gibson. I think there may have been a few years they were built at the Indonesia factory by the same team as Masterbilt though. Recent and current models are now under the Masterbilt line in Indonesia. Also the back is solid.
Much appreciated, Tree. Thanks for the info, brother man 👍🏻
No problem!
The Chinese factory is Gibson owned The Indonesia is contracted. That's why they had problems with Indonesian guitars. Get the ones from the Gibson factory they are best and checked by Gibson workers themselves.
A real shame considering how beautiful that top is! I played one of these “Inspired By Texan” models a few years back at a shop and it played and sounded great. Wondering if you got a dud?
Hi Sam, perhaps it was a dud. The factory code is 23, which is the custom shop. I only recently learned how to identify the factory. A further surprise, as I expected China. Really glad you came to visit, Sam. You’re always welcome here, brother man 👍🏻
Yeah inspired and masterbuilt are their best guitars. I will always recommend them and the Chinese made over the Indonesia because the Chines factory is Gibson owned and the Indonesian is contracted.
The dud is that his is a fake knockoff.
I remember these… back is solid, sides laminate… played a few at guitar center and didn’t care for it… all the traits of cheap Epiphones. These were built in a China, but not to Masterbuilt standards
Appreciate the confirmation. I’ve picked up a few guitars over the years that just didn’t resonate with me and this was certainly one of them. Thanks for sharing, brother man 👍🏻
Likely a slight label abbreviation. It's likely a Inspired by Gibson - Texan model. They sell and continue to sell those. BTW, the Epi IBG's are NOT the same as Epi Masterbilt. Only go with the Epi masterbilts.
Agreed, as far as the Texan is concerned. It’s nuts, because you would think they wouldn’t want Inspired by associated with poor sound quality. Oh well. Always great to get your insights, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm Have you looked at the Epi masterbilt Frontier? I have been looking for one of those on sale. Sounds really good from the youtube vids I've heard.
There is no Gibson model so it can't be a "inspired by Gibson". Only Epiphone makes Texans
@@Felix-so8ez Yeah come to think of it you are right - wonder what the deal is with "inspired by Texan" then? - Some Chinese knockoff of a Chinese knockoff? Odd...must be an Epiphone masterbilt Texan, mislabeled as they do sell those on Sweetwater.
@@Felix-so8ez Hi Felix, I mistakenly said that. It is a crappy Inspired by Texan. Live and learn 👍🏻
All inspired by are all solid guitars
Appreciate the insight, brother man 👍🏻
PoC 😁 - I'm gonna go out on a limb and say You do not like the "inspired by " guitar - 😆😂 - sorry for the let down sir - good retraction - good follow up - Blessings to ya
Thank you and right backatcha, brother man 👍
waw amazing guitar,,,,,
Sold to the highest bidder. I have to ask, did you watch this video 🤣?
I was nearly going to buy one Randy, but I noticed it wasn’t inspired by Gibson master built.you can be Easily caught out.
Great point, Derek! It is very easy to assume. I still remember what my dad said about the word assume, as a syllablized acronym 😂. Oh well, live and learn 👍🏻
Masterbuilt and inspired are the same thing. They are full solid Guitars and Epiphone top range.
Appreciate the insight, Michael 👍🏻
I just saw the street price of the Inspired-By version is averaging $399. Yikes!
Had a hard time putting a heart on your comment, Paul! Now I'm irritated even more!! Just kidding, brother man. Yes sir, they are all used now, because I think they wised up and quit building them. I just was taken for a ride, mob style, and bought this one. Oh well, it's only money 😂. Great to hear from and hope you and yours are doing well, brother man 👍
I'll buy it from you?
Hi Anthony, I actually sold it a few months after this video. Sorry brother man 👍🏻
This the one for $299 which I am guessing or the $799.
Hi Marc, I think this was a $299 trapped in a $799 body 😂. It originally was listed as $749, I think. It was touted as a Inspired by Texan, whatever that means. If this guitar was inspired by the original Texan, then I don’t ever want to hear another Texan! Thanks for the question.
Thanks for responding. I dug into it since I posted the question. $799 made in Indonesia. $2800 made in Montana from what I gather. Thanks for your review on the $299 guitar. I know to stay away from it.
It's the same guitar
Probably price
Oddly enough, not so on overseas Texans 👍🏻
Just buy a east man slope shoulder. Problem solved
Hi John, I’ve heard some really good things about the Eastman. Appreciate the input and I certainly don’t disagree based on the feedback I’ve seen 👍🏻
Thet is not a real epiphone. I have a real one. Serial numbers are not even close and yours has weird bracing.
To your point, I sold it and never want to see it again 😂
So what you're saying is that you liked it until somebody pointed out that it wasn't the Real McCoy... Sounded great until you found out it was a poc....
Did you watch the first video I did on this?
@randysrhythm I just did sorry bud... I'll Pay Closer attention next time... Sorry about that
@@swimpsmagbayao9513 I’ll remove the pin 😂. You’re a good guy and the kind of person I’m happy to have on this channel. I’ve done similar things, so don’t give it a thought. Have a great week and don’t let this come between us. I have much respect for you coming back and correcting things 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm all good bud...
Bro he never liked it to begin with..poc..
I have 2 MB Texans. They are both great sounding, great looking, and great playing guitars. Crafted in Indonesia. 👍👍🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶They have Made in Indonesia on the back of the headstock. Sorry you got screwed Randy. You should send it back to Epiphone and tell them you want a Masterbilt Texan, because you feel you got ripped off! 👎👎🤬🤬🤬🤬🤮🤮🤮🤮💩💩💩💩
Hi John, I was sorry too 😂. However, I put it up on Craigslist and sold it. When the gentleman showed up, I told him I did not like the sound of it and had no idea where it was built. He said he didn’t care and he loved the guitar, so it all worked out fine and I got every dime back out of the guitar.
To your other point, I know folks that have the MB version and they sounded great. A live and learn situation, brother man 👍🏻
