YES, JP, you are absolutely CORRECT that Paul McCartney played "YESTERDAY" on his 1964 Epiphone Texan. The Beatles favored Epiphones. Paul McCartney purchased his "1964 FT-79 Epiphone Texan in 1965 in New York City. It was an all solid wood, right-handed model, which he flipped over. He learned to play with the strings upside down or right side up. Paul later had the nut and bridge saddle reversed to accommodate a left-handed player such as himself. When Epiphone introduced their Texan in 1942, it was made in a smaller body shape, with square shoulders, closer to a 000 Martin. When Gibson started making the FT-79, in the later 1950's, they changed this guitar to a shape that was very similar to the Gibson J-45/J-50. Which had a larger body and sloped shoulders.
The guitar now named the Texan was essentially the budget model of the Gibson J-45. However, there were some key differences. The Texan had a 25.5” long scale neck, similar to their Advanced Jumbo model, compared to the J-45's 24.75” short scale neck.
Here's Paul playing "YESTERDAY" on his 1964 Epiphone Texan on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1965:

Another great video Sir. I am going to review the Texan too, as soon as funds become available. And because of your review, of the "inspired by Gibson" J200, we purchased one and it was a cannon. So thank you for the valuable information and your opinions, as they helped in our decision to pick that guitar up. And I always mentioned that it was you who inspired our purchase.
Back to the Texan, I want to make a comparison video of the Texan from Indonesia, to my 1965 Texan FT79N from Kalamazoo. I can't wait..lol.

I'm loving the looks and sounds of all these new Epiphones they're putting out. Stellar work and sound at affordable prices. I've played on Epiphone for years and I'm really impressed by what they're doing right now.
With that said I've never played a Gibson I felt in love with until recently. I would love to hear your opinion and review of the Gibson Songwriter. As part of its "modern line" it's not exactly one of their staple go to's or flagships, and maybe that's what I liked about it. If they're willing to send you one I'd love to hear you take on it. In terms of what Gibson puts out I definitely think it's one of their underrated gems. Price point set aside.
With everything said I did end up purchasing the one I fell for.

Love that big round sound, but full disclosure I really enjoy larger body acoustics, nearly everything I have is a dreadnought. I'm glad they were able to have it built overseas and keep the quality/sound where it needs to be; that doesn't always happen.
I wish FGN would reissue some of the Ibanez acoustics from the 80's (not the lawsuit ones, of course, although those were also amazing); I already have several (including a Lonestar) but I don't think any manufacturer has released as many full flame maple guitars as Fujigen in that time period or any other. And all the stuff built there around that time sounds and plays great; there are a variety of neck shapes, wood types, and body constructions - I recently picked up a late 70's Aria (looks to be built in the same plant as the Ibanez ones) but it's 7/8 size, and also in full flame maple with some nice aging/checking in the binding.
If they could put these out (JPN built acoustics, especially maple bodies) at a 700-800 (maybe even 1000) USD price point, they'd make a dent in all brands that sell for twice that much.
The only downside was some of the instruments have a heavy gloss finish and they still sound great but my oldest one is a b-stock refin in satin (or was never finished) and has not only the lungs of the rest of the pack but its throat has opened up quite a bit without being piercing or tinny...their "overseas" (to them) models are okay but their locally built ones were exceptional, especially for the price points. I would put my number one beat to heck worn fret holes in the fingerboard dread against literally any other dread, recording or live, mic'd or not.

I have had the Epi IBGs Hummingbird and J200…sold one traded the other….great builds but sounded pitiful unplugged but great plugged in….been setting up guitars for 35+ years now and could not tweak either one…I subsequently found out that the secret was to remove the pick guards…lol..oh well…picked up a ‘81 Guild GAD 50 that blew me away….and a recent trade for a ‘79 Yamaha FG 340ii I had the lady asked if I would knock some money off for her old Takamine EF-340 (July ‘83 model lawsuit era) in mint…what a sound from a plywood guitar and surprisingly good electronics in it…anyways I am off the Epi boat for awhile…think they are overrated. Epiphone has 2 versions of it, but they are basically the same except for the prices one is 850.00 the other is 350.00 and some minor specs, I can't see paying a 500.00 difference for just slightly different tone in fact I can't really hear a difference, so I got the Studio, and I am completely happy with it! There is one more “IBG” Epiphone that I would love your opinion on…
The Epiphone J45 Slash model. I’ve heard/seen what you have to say about Epiphone IBG J45 but this version has a few differences.
    -finish
    -electronics
    And most importantly
    -C shape chunky neck profile.

Big Hawk, Blackbird and all of Macca’s successive hits after 1968 were actually written and recorded on his 1967 Martin D-28. However the somehow classical piece George and him used to have fun with -and was the germ to Blackbird- doodled out of the Texan and certainly many other great acoustic Beatle songs (Michelle, I’ve Just Seen A Face, Here There and Everywhere, etc.) also were mostly composed and recorded on his beloved Epiphone acoustic until the batch of tunes John & him wrote during their stay in India.

Gibson has a brilliant strategy a lot of people haven't picked up on yet. It's in line with a problem the guitar industry has, that is this misplaced value in American labor. I love American built products, but the problem is the powers that be sold our US manufacturing workforce out decades ago, so USA artisan / boutique builders still have a place, but for the big builders, the truth is they can provide a lot better value to costumers building outside the United States. Instead of slapping their USA Gibson brand on something built in Mexico, like C.F. Martin and Taylor do, Gibson has decided to build up the Epiphone brand to new quality standards and they have done it... The "Inspired By Gibson" line and it's sister "Masterbuilt" all-solid collections are the best acoustic guitars the company has ever produced.... There's a luthier who use to work for Stew Mac who runs a channel, Driftwood Guitars. He's a boutique builder and he cut open a Gibson G series and he cut open an Epiphone Inspired by Gibson J-45 and he points out objectively the Epiphone is a better built guitar around that $1k price... The Epiphone J-45 is really the guitar a working musician can afford. Adjust for inflation and it cost a player today about as much as a USA built J-45 would have back in the 50s or 60s... So the USA Gibson brand, the good guitars they build, not the cheap G and Studio stuff, the Gibson brand is really a luxury brand in the guitar world aimed more at the deep pocket hobbyist. This is why they produce so many signature collections. Real working musicians don't give a shit about a signature collection. They are positioning the company so that Epiphone becomes their real mainstream brand and the Gibson brand the high-end luxury brand. This is former Levi's CEO James Curleigh's direction and I think given the state of things, it's a solid direction.

Gibson made a wise decision when it gave you a Texan. Judging by the comments, it’s already made its money back in future sales. Your reviews of Epiphones “inspired” me to buy one, a 1992 Joe Pass Emperor II archtop made in Korea at the Samick factory. Like its Indonesian brothers, it is a quality instrument. Well crafted and gives a beautiful classic jazz tone. And … I’ve got you to thank for turning me on to the quality coming out of Epiphone’s overseas factories. Cheers!

    • @timmcgurl

      @Big Hawk
NOPE. Sorry to tell you, but the acoustic guitars played by "both" John and Paul on the "WHITE ALBUM" from 1968 are their "1967 Martin D-28's" that they also brought to India when they spent time with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
Paul bought his 1964 Epiphone FT-79 Texan in 1965 in New York City. He played "Yesterday" from "Help" on the Epiphone Texan (also LIVE on the Ed Sullivan Show) and "Michelle" from "Rubber Soul", both on his Epiphone Texan. But by the time of the "White Album", Paul and John used their D-28's.
In fact, here's an excerpt from "Far Out Magazine" (and a Link to their story about Paul and his acoustics):
"By the time The Beatles began sessions for The White Album, McCartney had found a new favourite acoustic guitar. Having put aside the Epiphone Texan, McCartney was now using a Martin D-28, once again repurposing a right-handed model in order to play it with his own left-handed style."
"Nearly all of McCartney’s acoustic songs from The White Album were recorded on the Martin, including ‘Mother Nature’s Son’ and ‘Blackbird’, and McCartney would keep the guitar handy for the recording of Let It Be‘s ‘Two of Us’ as well."

Sounds great JP what are SGI pickups? Never heard of them. I’ve been experimenting with JJB prestige 330’s great clean sound. Would love a link if you have one for SGI. Cheers!

It sound alright but not anywere near the quality sound of your G70. For what it is its a fine guitar.

I would love it if you could review the American made Texan.

Would you get the Epiphone masterbilt texan acoustic-electric guitar or a Fender Newporter Classic. It's going to a beginner that will be playing old country music like Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and Johnny Cash for reference. Just not sure which one would have the best sound for that music, they both sound good to me I just clearly don't have a good ear for picking up some variations of the sounds as I'm sure they must have.

I swear by those apogee interfaces. I like the older ones better. I have the same one and a old duet still use them. What software do you use..

Are you familiar with Riversong guitars with adjustable necks made in Kamloops BC? And if you are what is your opinion.

So which would you choose? Epiphone Texan or Yamaha LL16?

Well, there goes another $700 out of the old savings. What a great sound this guitar has, just the touch of creaky old cheap guitar like a Stella, but rings out like a bell. I'm not sure how they managed this in what looks like just a regular J-45ish body with the usual assortment of tonewoods. I'm sure they studied the originals, but you wonder what magical combination of bracing and dimensions created something so unique.

Are all of the Texan's built in Bozeman, Montana now? When I search Google, I come up with guitars from around $600 up to $2600. The sticker in JP's Texan says FT79 Masterbuilt and the one I'm looking at says FT79 Masterbuilt Tribute.

new video idea A & B Gibson hummingbird and Epiphone IBG hummingbird, and ask them about your sig model: hummingbone. GIbson may not like it, but maybe it will get Gibson to actually better their Q/A. Epiphone is making great electrics too. I always have guys that own Gibson ES asking about my Epiphone Dot
