    • Project Whitey, the 19...
A 1957 GMC big widow Napco truck project that became a reason to have some fun.
"57 GMC Runs Again" is the engine donor for this truck. We've decided to video document the process of turning the engine-less "Mighty Whitey" into a road worthy marvel, updating things for comfort and safety, and all the while keeping a tight budget. The end result is supposed to be a reliable cruiser with substantial off-road capabilities, and something that we needn't worry about getting a scratch on. Keep checking back as we add episodes building both "Mighty Whitey" and showing other Redneck Restorations on "This Old Truck".

My father had a seafoam green 57 Chevy with 4 wheel drive. It was a monster. My sister drove it to high school in the early 60's. Her friends could not believe that she could drive it.

I loved it when you washed the inside of the truck! I used to to the same exact thing when I worked on the farm. takes a few days for the seat to dry but its nice to see what's under all the dirt on the dashboard again! and now I know what it looks like when all the trash blows out the door so thanks for that too!

I just love your truck. I love how you wash it, and take care of it. And also Its not a sissy garage queen. You actually use it. Nice to see vintage put to use the way it should. Thats the reason these things are built. For usage, not just to look at.Use it, fix it, wash it, modify it. But most of all, use it. Thats what gives it character.

I've owned a 57 Chevy 3100 for 48 years now. It was rough when I bought it in 1978. I've replaced everything except the frame. It has a big window cab. Lot's of stainless and chrome accessories now. I added Napco 4x4 like this truck has. It needs to be restored again since it's set outside it's whole life. That's just one of my retirement projects I have planned. Engine is a hot 350 with Duntov cam. I'll put a more stock 265 back in it. Trying to take it back to factory correct in the future. Of course the 265 will get some internal messaging. Nobody can see what's inside an engine. LOL

@@joeltucker3024 Here's the story. First, it's not my truck. Second, the guys wife pulled the plug on the project when he reached 24K invested. It has set here waiting to be assembled for 9 years. IOf you watch the "Project Whitey" series playlist, it will show you everything that has bee done to date, with the exception of the engine rebuild. GMC used Pontiac based V-8's from 55-59. 55 was a 287. From there they went to 316, to 347 and to 336 for 58 and 59. The Pontiacs went to 370 in 58 and the 389 in 59. I located a 59 Pontiac 389 and that has been punched 40 over and cammed for low and mid-range torque. The 40 over make it a little over 399 CID.
All of the chrome has been redone. There are several spare parts that go with it. If you want to discuss price, email me at RNRTOT@frontier.com

Jeff, just watched this video now being I am not a terrible fan of the tri-year Chevy trucks or cars and remembered an experience I had with my 1500psi electric pressure washer for my dairy barn before I sold cows. I made the mistake of getting in hurry and not grabbing gloves that morning, was washing to close to flourecent light(with power off of course), I nicked it and it shattered. I jerked the wand in front of my hand and it tore a 1/4 " deep gash--10 stitches across my palm. Washers are damn dangerous. They cut like a knife. Viewers--- GET PROPER GEAR(gloves, goggles, tall rubber boots) Jim.

Exactly. Why not? I've seen a lot of old trucks that could use a good cleanin' inside and out. Elderlylron did NOT spray under the dash directly toward anything electrical. He cleaned out decades of dust, mildew and germs from the old fart can and actually made it a healthier cab to sit your butt in. Ease up and realize that this is an Excellent way to begin an old truck restoration. Leave the doors open and let it dry for as long as possible and/or dry it with an air hose

Also it doesnt take much effort to just go inside by hand and wipe down everything yourself.

1950 there weren't a lot of electronics in old farm trucks. They were DESIGNED to be washed out, witness the rubber floor mats, sans carpet, vinyl seats, hard plastic everything. In my younger days when driving old iron I did it more times than you could count. Never ever a problem. Would I do it on today's vehicles? When HELL froze over.

    A 57 never had carpet.
Floors rust due to continual exposure to corrosive elements.
You can't short the electrical system. You can however corrode it, creating poor contact or an open circuit. A short is when your power lead goes directly to ground instead of the load, hence, "short" circuit.
You can't start an electrical fire in a 12V system by using water. If you could, every battery would catch fire if it got wet.
Mold grows in perpetually damp areas.

Bought a 56 GMC stepside farmtruck. In 1975. Original flat black w/ Arkansas chrome grill/bumpers.aka silver spray can. 3 on the tree.about 385 gear. Low and TORQUEY! Ran tall sidewalls mud/snow type tires. Had it 2 days and thinking it ran like a stock car.BIG SURPRISE! under the hood ,, stock air cleaner, oil type, open pipes.i cleaned every thing and found a plate riveted to the block saying BROWNS.This was in TULSA.Turns out it wasn't(of.course).a stock 292 Big Six.with 3/4ton suspension and the boys at BROWNS bore and stroke ,heads done.torque CAM,the previous owner set it up that way on purpose. SLEEPER ANYONE?😎🗽🏁 kept it til I was in the NAVY and got arrested for jaywalking on new years Eve in San Diego. Called dad for bail and it got me out quickly.I asked him later how he got $300.that fast."Sold your truck". Fair enough I felt.that old truck got me in and out of lots of trouble. Ended up keeping a black mark off my record.Young and dumb. Within a week I had a hotrod TRIUMPH 500 TWIN anyway!😎🎶🗽

Gotta be careful with that pressure washer up front. They can fold the fins on the radiator over and seal off any air flow in later rigs. The old iron might have beefier radiators but it would pay to check. I did the grill on an eighties Bronco with one careless swipe and wiped out the radiator. Luckily it was just a parts truck back in the nineties but it made me realize what would happen with a 2800# machine. Take care. Doug

    • @tomswinburn1778
      @tomswinburn1778 Před 7 lety

Being an old (I do mean OLD) air conditioning mechanic lemme give you a hint. The aluminum fin condenser coils are much more delicate than radiators. BUT, if you do it right you can use a pressure washer. ALWAYS start off with the water directed at the fins HEAD ON, NOT at an angle. Keep it that way. Move top to bottom and bottom to top, never going horizontally. Turn the pressure down as much as possible. If that's not possible move back, away from the coil/radiator. If you NEVER approach at an angle you'll be okay. And a pressure washer does a WHALE of a job. Better than the non-acid cleaners now sold for big bucks. It'll work great for a radiator too.
