The B.A.R. is an Automatic Heavy Rifle. Hence the name 'BAR' Browning Automatic 'RIFLE'. The BREN on the other hand has always been a LIGHT MACHINE GUN by designation.
The BREN is quite obviously a far better Light Machine Gun for many reasons.. Capacity, Quick barrel swap, Faster Mag change etc.
The Bren was regarded as the principal weapon of an infantry section, providing the majority of its firepower. As such, all ranks were expected to be "experts in its use". The Bren had an effective range of around 600 yards (550 m) when fired from a prone position with a bipod.
you know how many awards from world war two involve “and then he picked up a bren”? i lost count 😂 that gun was pivotal for our fellow canucks and brits overseas!
Three B's will get you a VC. BREN, Bayonet and Bravery.
Also Capt C H Upham VC & Bar 2NZEF WW2, he also loved grenades , often carrying a haversack of them
I carried the L1A1 SLR, British inch pattern version of FN FAL. A lovely little rifle
My favorite bren gun is whatever one was used in Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels
I carried the L4 in the cadets, and when I reached the rank of Cadet Corporal my favourite lesson to give was on the Bren (we had Mk II .303’s in the armoury at school but used L4’s on exercise at Annual Camp).
Would you look at that. Was just looking into BREN guns and all derivatives, was just looking at Arm&Gun for MTAR content, and lo and behold! The L4 Bren! Ahhh, what a time to be alive.
Another thing, imagine a new BREN gun rendition, with a Surefire Mag5-60/100 with magazine ejection, last round bolt hold open, D-EVO optic, in the furniture of a FN MAG, with a bolt of the FN SCAR's HAMR modification.
A good buddy of mine and I have talked about taking out dated designs and shoehorning them into the modern era with fixes such as that (without resorting to any bubba'ing of historical guns). Or honestly just trying to make the gun be all that it could based on modern insights. For example: the stock drop on the thompson affects it so terribly, but it wouldn't be hard to design and print a new, more inline stock profile for it and that would make a huge difference in its handling and shootability.

I carried the L4A4 Bren whilst a member of an Assault Section (later Scouts) in an Armoured Cavalry Troop with 2nd Cavalry Regiment (Royal Australian Armoured Corps 1976-1979) and preferring to the old Vietnam era M60 GPMG... Far better than the L2A1 AR in recruit training at the Royal Military College 'Duntroon' too! As to your question about the L1A1 SLR vs G3 = prior to the change in gun laws here in Australia, I owned both so the SLR won hands down (though probably due to familiarity as well - the G3 just seemed more complicated!) Funnily enough, I preferred the M1A over the SLR.... I also owned an AR-15 and CAR-15 so their lighter weight caught my attention when serving with the Reserve in the Royal Victoria Regiment - in many respects, it probably is dependent on what you are used to and most familiar with .. ? Hey thanks for sharing your experiences. Thought that highly of the M1A hey? Any tricks for mag reloads, or just 'practice makes perfect'? Why did you prefer it over the FAL?
@@armandgun it seemed lighter and easier over the L1A1 SLR.... with the rear sight on the rear receiver of the SLR, it seemed to me every time you field stripped the rifle you would've broken the zero on the sighting unlike the M1A (M14) ...? Admittedly though, years of handling the SLR made me comfortable with it and I still remember everything about it some 40 years after last handling one!

FAL. softer recoil impulse over the G3. Not as accurate in slow fire , but FAL makes up the accuracy loss by staying on target better than the G3 under rapid strings.
It's beautiful, like between locksmith craft and Swiss watch technology.

It's not overrated, in my opinion the Brits sure have created a great piece of hardware for their armed forces in the UK and Commonwealth. Wish I bought an L4 when I saw it, but I'll settle for my Mk2 in .303, just wish the .303 ammo was more widely available and affordable so that I didn't need to reload every 303 brass.
I don't think it's overrated either, it's a genuinely fantastic platform, I'm just disappointed they lost the last round bolt hold functionality.
Three bits of trivia about the L4. 1. The 1958 Pattern webbing ammo pouches were made large enough to accommodate 30 round magazines. 2. The L4 saw service in the Falklands when the RM Commandos ran two gun sections. 3. The L4 last saw service in the First Gulf War.
It wasn't just the RMs using it in the Falklands.

I carried the L4 LMG in Northern Ireland's Op Banner on long country Patrols and the L1A1 SLR on urban for 10 years. , my choice is the SLR
Didn't like the SA80 carried it for 12 years as well
You can actually use a Canadian Army C1 and C2 FAL Assault Rifle magazines in this

The howling is the best. We whistle at them a bit to get them going. Once they start they rile each other up and put on a good show.

There’s three classes of firearms license here Non restricted which is the most common and allows you to have long guns and shotguns with an overall length of 21” or greater with exception of a few particular rifles that are restricted or prohibited by name like the AK or AR, they can be brought wherever and only have to be unloaded during transport, restricted firearms which mainly consisted of pistols before the recent ban but also includes anything under 21 inches and anything not banned by name has to be stored and transported in a secure locked container, can only be discharged at an authorized range and you have to notify the rcmp any time your transporting it there is also a license for trappers, minors and guides called an authorization to carry which allows them to open carry certain restricted pistols in the forest and the last one is the prohibited license which i don’t know a whole lot about as its pretty rare but from my understanding it’s reserved for certain businesses and exporters and is kind of like an FFL and lets you own practically whatever

Is there a reason why you return the charging handle manually on the L1A1 (was it a noise thing)? If I did that with my SLR the Sergeant Major would happily make a rather embarrassed example out of me. We were instructed to only bring the handle to the rear and then let it go 😁

Its ridiculous to say that the BAR was superior in anyway to the Bren. No one is firing the Bren from the shoulder, its either prone or from the hip with a sling, stop using it incorrectly and your "problems" evaporate.
If you wanna see the guns in action and actually fired, this is not the channel, correct?
