    The reason why Rust asked for the beer in the first episode is bc everything he tells the two detectives from that point on becomes inadmissable. Very smart on his part. They couldn't deny his request bc officially they only want to have "a casual conversation" about the case with him when in reality everyone (the viewer included) can easily tell that they're after something else.
    It's so well done bc all three of them know what's really going on but continue to play this cat and mouse act to further gather information from each other. I love the first season!

      i swear when i rewatch it i pick up something new every time. watching it with someone (i solo'ed it) def helps tie things together faster, as the show isn't ... obvious, for lack of a better word. it chugs along with or without you, and I wish more films and shows did this.

    People talk a lot about masculinity, but I think this show actually directly tackles the issue , it's truly about that idea, and both Rust and Marty embody many of the most positive and horrifically negative aspects of it. They are both incredibly heroic, intelligent, and capable while at the same time both are horrifically flawed, and that has taken a toll on everyone around them. It's a show about the balancing act of being a man.

    Rust is just phenomenal. He's such a flawed character, but he doesn't shy away from those deficiencies. It allows him to get into the mind of the perpetrator. Every time I see clips from the first season of TD it makes me respect Matthew McConahey as a person and an actor. He really gets into the psyche of his characters. Which would send us mere mortals ape shit.

    As a native of Louisiana, this show is hands down the most accurate depiction of the area I’ve seen. Down to the local sheriffs being corrupt. Especially in the smaller parishes and towns. My local sheriff was a Tony Soprano clone.

  • @lethaldose2000

    Marty is such a realistic character portrayal by Woody Harelson. Marty has very big flaws in his personal life which cause so much more chaos to the relationship between the two characters. AS a detective he can't hold a candle to Rust's intuition, but he's is integral to case management and interviewing leads. Of course, you both have so much to see with their professional and personal interactions.

    After watching your discussion at the end, it reminded me of a conversation my philosophy professor and I had when this first came out. And it was about the old debate as to whether or not a person separated fully from evil, and unaccustomed to it can, in fact. Be good. We discussed that it is the presence and self awareness of the evil one is capable of performing (and even has performed) coupled with the desire to not do that and be a champion of something good that makes a truely good and honorable man. And he actually used Russ as an example of that. Obviously we see that he is capable of great violence and harm, yet chooses to be an agent of order and law in a world he (to an extent) dispises. And as such, this means he actively chooses to be good. Thus making him good. . . . . .sorry, I went on a rant there. But your talk reminded me of that, thought I should share it. . .food for thought

    • @druidinary
      @druidinary Před 3 lety

      Really? All they did was use buzzwords from his stories and then never explained any of their relevance, because there was none. It was all smoke & mirrors to make an average detective story sound more mystical and mysterious. Instead I think Thomas Ligotti deserves more recognition seeing as they had McConaughey’s character basically quoting his work.

    • @MrSvlad
      @MrSvlad Před 3 lety +1

      @@druidinary I made no comment on the degree to which Chambers influenced True Detective-just that he’s there! My broader point was about his underappreciated contribution to letters. And clearly there are a number of literary influences here.
      But I enjoyed the light touch True Detective used with the Cthulhu Mythos-y stuff. It was less “buzzwords” and “smoke and mirrors” and more skirting the veil of the otherworldly-something they could best do by weaving it in subtly. It was great fun slowly realizing who and what they were referencing (and the wider associations… and Carcosa!). And all of that adds to the final question: Was some of what we were presented with supernatural? The slow-burning dynamic between the Weird and this gritty detective fiction elevates the show.

    I only hope that you will continue with Season 2 of TRUE DETECTIVE when you are done with Season 1. People kind of dumped on Season 2 but I thought it was really well written and acted.

      People would have liked it far more if they weren't going in with the really high expectations from season 1. It wasn't as goid as season 2 but it's still solid. Kind of like Wire season 2.

      That description is incredibly over the top, in my opinion, but glad you enjoyed it. For my part, it’s another step in my eventual abandonment of that genre.

    Hmmm... at the end, you censored 2 circles resembling a breast? I mean... it's a drawing, art. It wasn't even a very good drawing, just two circles with a dot in the center... CZcams must be giving a lot of trouble with content like that if you are so cautious.

    Am I the only person who gets annoyed (and disgusted) when actors make smoking such a big part of their "acting"? McConaughey overdoes this so much it almost becomes a parody of good acting.
