The slightly odd tone of this movie, moving from action to comedy to people getting murdered in an eyeblink, is a legacy of it's odd route from script to screen. It was originally written in the late 70s as a pure action film, then was later rewritten to add in some humour. Slyvester Stallone was originally considered for the Axel Foley role. He came in and rewrote the script again, taking out the humour, before dropping out 2 weeks before it was due to start filming. A load of actors were considered for or offered the role, including Harrison Ford... Eddie Murphy was brought in at the last minute, the script was again rewritten to suit him (with his input) and this movie was the result.

Growing up, I had this movie recorded to VHS before Return of the Jedi, so it was part of the Star Wars quadrilogy for me.

My interpretation is the hotel collects souls and it especially wanted Danny because of his powers. It also releases souls to be reincarnated and draws them back with others to add to the collection. If you remember, at one point Jack said he felt he had been there before and it felt like home.

You should check out ispy. It stars Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson.

Lisa Eilbacher, who plays Jenny, was also in another super hit movie from the early eighties. An Officer And A Gentleman, with Richard Gere and Debra Winger. Lisa plays the female Aviation Officer Candidate, who enjoys the "crash an airplane into water and try to get out before you drown" test. It's like a short rollercoaster that goes into a swimming pool and ends up upside down, underwater. It scares the other candidates, all male, and they find it hard to complete. But when it is her turn, she gets out of the rollercoaster cage easily, swims to the surface, laughs happily, and shouts "That was fun! Can I do it again?" That scene got everyone in the movie theatre when I watched the movie back then! 🙂

The mansion at the end of this is the same one from Commando with Arnold Schwarzenegger

Judge Reinhold who plays Rosewood is brilliant in Ruthless People, with Bette Midler and Danny DeVito! He is so not ruthless, even he tries to be!

May be you should watch The Golden Child.

Some other Murphy films which should be on you guys' watch/react list are: "Bowfinger", "Norbit", "Life", and "Tower Heist". All excellent films, and all great performances by Murphy. I'd also suggest an obscure film by him titled, "Meet Dave". It wasn't one of his most popular films, however, my wife and I did find it oddly entertaining, and very underrated of his films.

35:15 - Hi TBR Schmitt! Beverly Hills Cop was very early in Eddie Murphy's film career. It was his fourth film. Murphy's early career was more mature audience types of films. It was later (like the middle) of his career when he started doing more wide audience movies, and of course children's movies like Shrek, and Mulan, Dr. Dolittle, and the like; which most people who were children around this time largely only know him for, so it is always a surprise for young adults today who grew up on "Eddie: Light" when they see his earlier, raunchier work, like 48 Hrs.. In the more recent years, he's done more dramatic roles like Mr. Church, and Dream Girls. But he has also still done many mature audiences type of films too like, Norbit, Bowfinger, Life, Metro, Showtime, Dolemite Is My Name, Coming 2 America, and Tower Heist.

Beverly hills cop 2 is my favorite!

Metro (1997) is another very forgotten action movie that you should check out. Murphy plays another cop, but the tone is more serious and less comedic (although Eddie always manages to squeeze in some gags).

*Eddie Murphy by the generations:* Boomer- "He's Buckwheat on SNL"; Gen X- "Raw"; Millennials- "He's Donkey"; Gen Z... [crickets]. Almost forgot, my grampy the Depression Era kid- "That's not a Murphy... he's not Irish at all."

Eh, I think 48 Hours came out first. I think that's the movie that showed his action chops. I can't believe you didn't recognize Paul Reiser from Aliens. Lol Oh yeah, the sequel to this is also a Tony Scott movie to add to the list. 🤘 And OMG the list of movies I can give ya. Lol Definitely watch 48 Hours and the sequel, Another 48 Hours. The most recent thing I've seen him in, that was awesome, was Tower Heist. It's got Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick, Casey Affleck, and a ton of people in the cast. Great reaction as always, guys. 😊

Yes I agree with the death of Mikey I remember when I first saw this film it was very realistic and brutal. Made you realize that it wasn't just going to be a funny movie but a lot of grit and action. Sell Beverly Hills Cop 2 is actually pretty good and goes right along with the first one I think the third one falls off a little bit in my opinion but it's still good. Of course 48 Hours as well as another 48 Hours first one being better of course and a movie I kind of like myself even though it's a little cheesy but it was the 80s and that's the Golden Child. There's also a movie called Vampire in Brooklyn which is okay

Tony Scott directed Beverly Hills Cop 2, his third film (and right after Top Gun). You can see his style develop in BHC 2 and how it eventually became part of his trademark style in True Romance as well as his other films over the course of his career (Tony Scott opens up his style in Man On Fire with new techniques) . You should complete the trilogy. The second movie hits harder if you watch them close together, I think. The third was divisive; it doesn't quite have the same vibe as the first two, but still a good movie in its own right. There was also a recent (last few years?) sequel about Axel's son… which I heard bad things about. Thankfully, I never heard the Crazy Frog's cover of Axel F Theme enough for it to replace the original in my head.

Both of the Nutty Professor movies are worth watching, IMHO. My kind of infantile humor, but not for everyone. Much like "Coming To America", it's worth noting that Eddie plays like 8 characters in both movies. There should be an Oscar category just for that.

I am SO glad you reacted to this! Such a classic film. The theme song “Axel F” played at every outdoor event for years! Ronnie Cox as the Lieutenant is such a great performance. The little smile he gives when Axel says “the super cop story was working” is masterclass in acting, showing the audience he isn’t a bad guy he just follows the rules. It is so nice to go jack and see him as a good guy - which is so rare since Cox became known for playing incredible villains. It may be my favorite Ronnie Cox role ever just because it’s so different.
